Scolded For Harassing Girl, Class 12 Student Hacks Man To Death In Bhubaneswar: Cops

Police are checking documents to ascertain whether the accused is a minor or not. (Representational)

Bhubaneswar:

A man was hacked to death by a jilted minor in Raghunath Nagar under the Khandagiri police station area in the state capital, said police on Thursday, adding that the accused had felt insulted after being scolded for harassing a girl.

Two minors, including the prime accused, have been detained. The accused is a Class 12 student of a local college in Bhubaneswar.

The victim was identified as Jagat Mallik alias Jaga of Suka Vihar in the Raghunath Nagar area of the city.

The 30-year-old victim, an auto driver, was returning home after attending a cultural programme in Cuttack. The minor and his associate reportedly intercepted the victim ‘s vehicle just 100 meters away from the latter’s residence on Wednesday night.

Both Mallik and the minors engaged in a heated argument. The accused assaulted the victim with a sword as per their plan. The accused later fled the spot leaving Mallik bleeding profusely.

Mallik was rushed to the AIIMS, Bhubaneswar where the doctors declared him dead.

Upon being informed, Khandagiri Police reached the spot and initiated an investigation into the matter.

Speaking to media persons, Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Prateek Singh said that the accused have been detained at the police station and the weapon of offence has been seized.

“We ascertained during further investigation that the accused minor had an unrequited love for the victim’s niece. The victim had earlier warned the accused minor on this issue. The accused who felt insulted assaulted the victim yesterday to take revenge,” said DCP Singh on Thursday.

DCP Singh also said that police are checking the school leaving certificate and documents to ascertain whether the accused is a minor or not.

Sources claimed that the victim and the accused’s family members fought over the unrequited love affair around two months ago. The victim’s family members also alleged that the accused’s father had reportedly threatened to kill them over the issue.

On Revanth Reddy's Jibe Over Bail For K Kavitha, Top Court's Furious Reply

On Revanth Reddy's Jibe Over Bail For K Kavitha, Top Court's Furious Reply

Revanth Reddy was sworn in as Chief Minister of Telangana in December last year (File).

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Thursday reprimanded Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy over comments claiming bail this week for BRS leader K Kavitha, in the alleged Delhi liquor policy case, was due to a “deal” between ex Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s party and the ruling BJP.

The reprimand came as a three-judge bench of Justices BR Gavai, PK Mishra, and KV Viswanathan was hearing a plea seeking transfer of the 2015 cash-for-votes case against the Chief Minister to Madhya Pradesh. The petitioners argued he could influence witnesses and tamper with evidence.

During the hearing the Supreme Court was told, “It has been publicly reported… the kind of statements he (the Chief Minister) made – that if police does anything, he will have them beaten up on streets…”

That shocking claim aside, the hearing began on a positive note for the Chief Minister, with the court indicating reluctance to transfer the case and expressing “complete faith” in its state colleagues.

After a flurry of arguments the court said it would rule at 2 pm.

Come 2 pm, however, it was an enraged Supreme Court that assembled and red-flagged deep concern over the “manner of a statement” made by the Chief Minister. “Have you read what (he) said… just read… such statements by a Chief Minister might rightly create apprehension,” Justice Gavai said.

“If You Do Not Respect Us…”

“Should a person holding a constitutional post make such statements? There should be mutual respect (between politicians and judiciary)… how can anyone say we pass orders for political reasons?” the court said, “If you do not respect (us) then we will send (your) trial elsewhere.”

“This is the highest court in the country… just yesterday we issued notice to Maharashtra’s Additional Chief Secretary (Forest and Revenue Department),” the court warned Mr Reddy.

The reference was to a notice demanding to know why the ACS, Rajesh Kumar, should not face contempt proceedings for suggesting the Supreme Court is not following the law.

“Will we pass our order after consulting any political party? This (claim) should be the basis for transfer of the case… we perform our duty according to conscience and oath…” the court raged.

The court finally adjourned to Monday the petition to shift the trial. “We ae not closing this now… we always say we will not interfere in jurisdiction of legislature and same is expected of them too.”

Bail For K Kavitha

K Kavitha – the daughter of ex Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who was defeated by the Congress and Mr Reddy in last year’s election – was yesterday granted bail by the top court.

A bench of Justices Gavai and Viswanathan reasoned, “We find the investigation complete… custody is not necessary… she has been in jail for five months”, and noted, as it had when releasing ex Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, “the likelihood of a trial in the near future is impossible…”

After bail was granted, Mr Reddy was quoted by the Times of India as saying, “It is a fact that BRS worked for the victory of the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha poll. There is also talk Kavitha got bail because of the deal between BRS and BJP…”

Hyderabad: A two judge bench of the Telangana High Court comprising Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice J. Sreenivas Rao has directed that notices issued by the Deputy Collector and Tahsildar to Kavuri Hills residents regarding alleged encroachments on the Full Tank Level (FTL) limits of Durgam Cheruvu be treated as show cause notices.

The court’s decision addresses a batch of writ petitions filed by Kavuri Hills residents who challenged notices issued on August 3. These notices had ordered the removal of structures encroaching on the FTL limits of Durgam Cheruvu within 30 days, warning of further action if the encroachments were not addressed. The petitioners argued that the notices were issued without prior notice or an opportunity for a hearing, which they claimed violated the principles of natural justice.

The petitioners contended that the lack of prior notice and a chance to respond before the issuance of the notices was unlawful. In response, the Advocate General for the State proposed that the notices be treated as show cause notices, allowing the residents to submit their replies within a specified timeframe. The court taking consent of both the parties ordered that the impugned notices be considered as show cause notices. It granted the petitioners a two-week period to respond to the notices.

How Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya Equation Shaped Up Ahead Of T20 World Cup

The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was marred by a controversy surrounding the captaincy change for Mumbai Indians (MI). The five-time champions made a big call heading into IPL 2024, replacing long-serving skipper Rohit Sharma by Hardik Pandya, with the franchise bringing him back from Gujarat Titans (GT) as part of an all-cash deal. This led to speculation of a rift between Rohit and Hardik.

Amid rumours, Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma made big contributions in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 win. They were even seen hugging each other after the final, putting to rest speculation that all was not well between them. Veteran journalist Vimal Kumar has now given an interesting insight on the equation between Rohit and Hardik during the T20 World Cup.

During a recent interaction, Vimal Kumar revealed that the two didn’t speak to each other on the first day of practice. However, Rohit and Hardik had a heart-to-heart conversation on the second day, he added.

“When I went to the nets, on the first day I saw they were standing far apart and did not talk to each other. But by the second day, I saw them come over, one after the other, and sit together in a corner, talking for a long time. That moment for me defined this team. There was no camera there; nothing. The way Rohit and Hardik were talking, I was like ‘what am I watching?’,” Vimal Kumar said on 2 Sloggers’ YouTube channel.

The journalist also suggested that the chat between Rohit and Hardik, where the two sorted out their differences, played a key role in calming the atmosphere in the dressing room.

“There is so much going on in India with the public talking about their differences. After that, for the next three days, Rohit and Hardik would bat parallelly. And then Rohit would point out about his batting, bowling. When I saw that atmosphere and thought if they addressed such a complex issue, the elephant in the room. That vibe I saw demonstrated how relaxed the team atmosphere was,” he added.

Mr Vimal, however, gave the credit to the then India head coach Rahul Dravid for handling such a volatile situation.

“The full credit goes to Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma for this. The way he handled the big guys – Virat, Hardik, Rohit – I think Rahul Dravid has a lot to do with it. Everyone gelled together. That was the leadership I had confidence in,” Vimal further suggested.

For the unversed, India won the T20 World Cup after beating South Africa in the final, which was Dravid’s last game as head coach of the Indian team.

After the final, the likes of Rohit, Virat and Ravindra Jadeja also announced their T20 retirements.

Oscar-Winner Blasts Trump's 'Mean, Inhumane' Treatment Of Migrant Children

They didn’t keep records, and separated families in a way that made reuniting them impossible. (File)

Venice:

Film legend Errol Morris said the separation of thousands of migrant children from their parents by Donald Trump’s US administration was “inhumane and cruel” as his new documentary about the policy premiered at the Venice Film Festival Thursday.

“Do we need borders? Do we need immigration law? We do,” the Oscar-winning US director told AFP ahead of the screening of his film “Separated”. “But the idea is laws should be fair and humane.”

“And this particular policy struck me, still strikes me, as inhumane, as cruel as mean.”

In 2017, during Donald Trump’s first year as US president, his administration raised the idea of separating children from their parents as a way to deter illegal immigration — a key plank of his campaign.

Officially launched in April 2018, the “zero-tolerance” policy allowed criminal proceedings to be brought against anyone who crossed the US-Mexico border illegally, resulting in parents being immediately taken into custody without their children.

According to the documentary, which cited official government figures, at least 4,227 children were taken from their parents — and more than 1,000 are still separated.

“What horrifies me is that they didn’t keep records. They separated families in such a way that it might be impossible ever to reunite them,” said Morris, 76.

The veteran director won an Oscar in 2004 for “The Fog of War”, an astonishingly frank account of the Vietnam War by one of its architects, former US Secretary of defence Robert McNamara.

Divisive

Morris’s new film — being shown out of competition in Venice — is based on a book by US journalist Jacob Soboroff, who helped expose the desperate plight of the children.

“He had called me and asked me if I knew anybody who might be willing to turn his book into a movie… I volunteered myself,” Morris said.

The documentary is largely based on statements by Jonathan White, who was deputy director of the US Office for Refugee Resettlement (ORR) at the time and who opposed the policy applied by his superior, Scott Lloyd, who is also interviewed.

Lawsuits and a public outcry, even among Trump’s own Republican Party, forced the administration by mid-2018 to halt the separations.

In practice, however, the Trump administration continued to separate families under another regulation which allowed undocumented parents to be arrested and deported if they had committed a serious crime.

Immigration remains a hugely divisive issue for many Americans ahead of November’s presidential election, in which Trump is running against Vice President Kamala Harris.

A recent official US report found the government may have lost track of up to 32,000 unaccompanied migrant children in the past four years.

Ukrainian F-16 Jet Destroyed In Crash: Report

Ukraine F-16 Crashes, Pilot Dies During Russian Airstrikes, Kyiv Says

Kyiv, Ukraine:

An F-16 fighter jet used by Ukraine crashed on Monday, Kyiv’s military said, the first such loss reported since the long-awaited arrival of the U.S.-made planes in the country was confirmed this month.

The jet came down and its pilot died while it was approaching a target during a Russian airstrike, the Ukrainian General Staff said on Thursday in a statement on Facebook.

The F-16s had “demonstrated high efficiency” and downed four Russian cruise missiles, it added. “Connection with one of the aircraft was lost while it was approaching the next target. As it turned out later, the plane crashed, the pilot died,” the statement added.

Ukraine has not given detail on the size of its new fleet, though the loss is likely to have left a significant dent. The Times of London has cited a source familiar with the matter as saying Ukraine had six of the jets.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed on Aug. 4 his pilots had started flying F-16s, hailing the moment as a major milestone in the fight against the invasion Russia launched 29 months ago.

He said on Tuesday F-16s were used to repel a major Russian attack a day earlier of more than 200 missiles and drones, which targeted the energy sector.

Monday’s crash did not appear to be the result of Russian fire, and possible causes from pilot error to mechanical failure were still being investigated, a U.S. defense official told Reuters.

Military analysts have said the arrival of the small number of planes, while significant, is unlikely to be a turning point in the conflict.

Russia has had time to prepare defences to try to nullify the F-16s’ impact, and Ukraine has had to survive with a depleted air force that is a fraction of the size and sophistication of its enemy’s.

Ukraine’s Air Force Western command posted on Facebook an obituary of a pilot, Oleksiy Mes, saying he died while repelling Monday’s attack, but did not say he was an F-16 pilot.

CNN said Mes had a call sign Moonfish and reported in 2023 he was training for F-16 missions.

Kyiv has been urging allies to supply modern jets since the start of Russia’s invasion to bolster its small and old post-Soviet fleet.

This Indian City Overtakes Beijing To Become 'Billionaire Capital Of Asia'

Hurun India List: This Indian City Overtakes Beijing To Become 'Billionaire Capital Of Asia'

Mumbai saw an increase of 58 billionaire individuals, taking its total to 386 on the list (File)

New Delhi:

India’s financial capital Mumbai has emerged as the “billionaire capital of Asia,” having more billionaires than Beijing, the capital of China, according to the 2024 Hurun India Rich List.

Mumbai saw an increase of 58 billionaire individuals, taking its total to 386 on the list.

“Home to 25% of the list – Mumbai is not only the billionaire capital of Asia, overtaking Beijing but also the preferred city for Hurun India Rich Listers, followed by New Delhi and Hyderabad,” the Hurun list data stated.

Among the top cities of residence of Hurun India Rich Listers 2024, Mumbai is followed by Delhi, which has added 18 new billionaires, taking its rich list entries to 217.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad took a significant leap and surpassed Bengaluru, for the first time, to take the third position in the number of wealthy residents, The Economic Times reported.

A surge of 17 new billionaires took the total number in Hyderabad to 104, followed by Bengaluru at the fourth position with 100 wealthy individuals.

Among other cities in the top 10 are Chennai (82), Kolkata (69), Ahmedabad (67), Pune (53), Surat (28) and Gurugram (23).

‘Asia’s billionaire epicentre’

In March this year, the Hurun Global Rich List 2024 noted that Mumbai has surpassed Beijing to emerge as “Asia’s billionaire epicentre”.

As per the list, Mumbai is home to 92 billionaires, edging past Beijing’s count of 91. Notably, India’s financial capital added 26 new ultra-rich individuals having a total wealth of $445 billion to the club, while China’s capital city lost 18.

“Mumbai was the fastest-growing billionaire capital in the world, adding 26 in the year and taking it to third in the world and Asia’s billionaire capital. New Delhi broke into the Top 10 for the first time,” the earlier report stated.

Now, Mumbai is in third position globally in terms of billionaires, behind New York (119) and London (97).
