Adilabad: Blind Eye, a revolutionary wearable assistive device invented by Tagire Ravi Kiran, an engineering student from the town and the founder of Allien Innovations, was exhibited at Global Incubation Week, held by UNICEF at Istanbul in Turkey from August 24 to 30.

The device is meant for visually challenged persons.

The son of a TGSRTC Adilabad depot clerk, Ravi was the first and only innovator from India to get an invitation by UNICEF to display his invention in the Global Incubation Week for winning the imaGen Venture award. He was one of the 10 innovators chosen from across the world to showcase thought-provoking yet useful solutions in the event.

Kiran is going to receive a cash prize of Rs 8.5 lakh under imaGen Ventures award and will also be allowed to trial his device in 10 countries.

Imagen Ventures award is constituted by Generation Unlimited, a leading global Public-Private-Youth Partnership launched by UNICEF to bring together global organisations to create and deliver innovative solutions.

“The Blind Eye is the world’s first assistive wearable spectacle device designed for visually impaired individuals, providing comprehensive information about their surroundings. It aids in safe navigation, reading text in any language, and recognizing objects and people, thereby enhancing inclusivity in society,” Kiran told ‘Telangana Today.’

The engineering student said that the device can significantly improve the quality of life of visually impaired persons and reduce their reliance on others by enabling users to perform daily tasks independently.

The device leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) in several key functionalities to provide comprehensive support and empowerment for visually impaired individuals.

According to the inventor, the device which resembles a spectacle has advanced sensors, camera, speaker and microphones accommodated in it. It can read for the visually impaired people in any language and gives it in audio so that they don’t need to depend on others to read the normal text like newspaper, books, slips, etc. It aids them to identify the currency note as well.

Ravi said that he had invented the device by collaborating with T-Works and receiving unwavering support from the Telangana government, MeitY Startup Hub and Atal Incubation Centre, ALEAP Women Entrepreneurs Hub (AIC ALEAP WEHUB), IKP Knowledge Park and ACIC BML Munjal University (BMU).

Prior to the international recognition, Ravi had won the youngest innovator award from Telangana government in 2019 and a cash reward of Rs 2 lakh from LV Prasad Eye Institute for inventing the device.

How Blind Eye functions
The device can recognize people, can indicate the number of persons and their names if saved. It can also provide  elaborate details, like, are they looking at them, their movements, etc.

The device enables the visually impaired to notice the people in their surroundings. It also ensures safety for women as the deice also differentiates people by gender and information about their movement which empowers their safety.

Further, the device can detect objects such as water bottles, mobile phones among other essential items which will eliminate their dependency on others.

The device is equipped with advanced sensors which  guides them to navigate safely by detecting the objects and helping them to move around safely. It eliminates the use of the regular cane for the visually impaired.

Protesters march in support of Palestinians after Friday prayers in Amman

Jordanians have once again been out on the streets to express support for the Palestinian people, particularly those facing the US-Israeli genocide in Gaza.

The protest was held in the Jordanian capital, Amman, after Friday prayers. The demonstrators also slammed the torture and abuse of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. They held banners saying the prisoners are the symbol of resilience on the path to victory and Palestinian liberation. The plight of Palestinian prisoners has come under renewed international spotlight after the recent emergence of a video showing Israeli troops gang-raping an inmate. In their weekly pro-Palestinian rallies, the Jordanians have also been calling on their government to cut ties with Israel and the close the regime’s embassy.

New Delhi: A day after Shikhar Dhawan‘s announcement to join the upcoming season of the Legends League Cricket, former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik also joined the bandwagon and marked his presence for the tournament.

Karthik, in June this year, announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after the culmination of the Indian Premier League 2024 season. He represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru in his final stint in the cash-rich league. Known for his explosive batting in the middle order, his quick glove work behind the stumps, and most recently his exceptional work as a commentator, Karthik’s transition into the LLC marks a new chapter in his illustrious career.

The 39-year-old expressed his feelings about joining the LLC and said, “Playing at the Legends League Cricket is definitely something I am looking forward to after my retirement. I am up to the task both mentally and physically and look forward to playing the brand of cricket I have always enjoyed. Most importantly, to the fans, thank you for your constant support and I hope to entertain you once again on the field.”

Having represented the country in 180 games across three formats in which he scored 3,463 runs with a lone Test hundred and 17 half-centuries, Karthik also had 172 dismissals to his credit, most of them behind the stumps with a few in the outfield. Karthik finished his IPL career with 4,842 runs in 257 matches (joint second-most with Rohit Sharma), studded with 22 fifties.

In his illustrious IPL career, which spanned over 17 years, Karthik played for six franchises in the cash-rich league. He made his debut in the inaugural season in 2008 with the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). He switched to Punjab in 2011 and went on to play for the Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Lions, Kolkata Knight Riders, and the RCB.

Raman Raheja, Co-founder of LLC, welcomed Karthik to the league, said, “We are very excited to have Dinesh Karthik join us. His flair and his penchant to finish matches and entertain the crowd will undoubtedly add value to the Legends League Cricket. We look forward to seeing him in action alongside other cricket legends further cementing out position as the 2nd innings for legendary cricketers”.

The Legends League Cricket is set to commence its next season in September 2024, featuring a lineup of retired cricketing greats competing in a series of thrilling matches.

The LLC auction will be held in New Delhi on September 29 where the franchises will fight out for the biggest stars from India and international cricket putting over 200 players under the hammer.

Earlier, Karthik joined Paarl Royals for the SA20 season 3. He will become the first-ever Indian player to feature in the league.

Australia Cricket's Next Star 'Forced To Retire' At 26 After Head Injuries

Once considered the next big thing in Australian cricket, Will Pucovski has been forced to retire at the age of 16. The reason, according to several reports, is his recurring head injuries and concussion. Pucovski, who had admitted that these blows affected his mental health, decided to retire after a recommendation from a panel of medical experts, 9News Melbourne reported on Thursday.

The former opener played only one Test in his career, against India in 2021 at Sydney. His shaggy hair coming out from beneath his helmet, Pucovski made a chancy 62 in the game in which he seemed to struggle against off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin before being dismissed by Navdeep Saini. He also suffered a shoulder injury during the match which sidelined him for six months.

“My understanding is that an independent panel of experts recommended Pucovski retire three months ago, and all that’s left is for Cricket Victoria and his team to formalise that contractually,” Tom Morris said on Nine News.

“The news doesn’t come as a surprise to teammates of Pucovski who haven’t seen him at training all pre-season, in fact he’s been travelling overseas.”

The report by 9News added a previous medical panel in 2022 found some of Pucovski’s head injuries were “not true concussions”, and were related to stress or trauma responses.

He was, however, first picked in the national team in January 2019 and came close to making his debut in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka before being pipped by Kurtis Patterson.

Pucovski was concussed as recently as in March 2024, and was forced to retire hurt after Riley Meredith struck him on the helmet during a Sheffield Shield match.

The blow ruled him out of the rest of the Australian summer and also forced him to opt out of a contract with Leicestershire for the English summer.

In 36 first-class matches for Victoria, Pucovski scored 2,350 runs at 45.19 with seven hundreds.

He made his first-class debut in 2017 and though he did receive an offer from the Melbourne Stars in 2020/21, he has never played T20 cricket since the inception of the Big Bash League.

Pucovski was picked in the Test squad to face India after two double centuries for Victoria at Sheffield Shield. However, he was struck on the helmet while playing against the tourists for Australia A and suffered a concussion.

A series of concussion have plagued his career, contributing to his mental health issues and forcing him to take time off from the game. He tried his best to continue but the last episode of concussion in March prevented him from extending his career further.

He played for Victoria at Under-19 level, scored four centuries in a national championships and made his List A debut in a tour match against Pakistan in January 2017, following which he earned his Sheffield Shield debut.

Hong Kong Pro-Democracy News Outlet, Editors Found Guilty Of Sedition

Hong Kong Pro-Democracy News Outlet, Editors Found Guilty Of Sedition

The parent company of Stand News, Best Pencil Limited, was also found guilty (Representational)

Hong Kong:

Hong Kong pro-democracy news outlet Stand News and its two former chief editors were found guilty of sedition on Thursday, the first conviction of its kind since the city came under Chinese rule in 1997.

The verdict is part of a crackdown on free speech in the former British colony that has seen critics of China jailed or forced into exile, following huge pro-democracy protests in 2019.

Editors Chung Pui-kuen, 54, and Patrick Lam, 36, are the first journalists to be convicted of sedition since Britain handed Hong Kong over to China in 1997, and the ruling drew resounding international condemnation.

Chung and Lam were in charge of Stand News, a Chinese-language website that gained a massive following during the protests in 2019, before it was raided and shut down in December 2021.

On Thursday, district court judge Kwok Wai-kin said the pair were guilty of “conspiracy to publish and reproduce seditious publications”. The parent company of Stand News, Best Pencil Limited, was also found guilty.

“The line (Stand News) took was to support and promote Hong Kong local autonomy,” according to a written judgement by Kwok.

“It even became a tool to smear and vilify the Central Authorities (Beijing) and the (Hong Kong) SAR Government.”

Kwok also pointed to 11 articles published by Stand News that “caused potential detrimental consequences to national security” and had the intention of “seriously undermining” authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong.

Lam was absent from court on Thursday due to illness.

The judge granted the duo bail before their sentencing on September 26.

Colonial-era law

Chung and Lam were charged under a colonial-era law, which punishes sedition with a maximum jail term of two years.

A recent security law enacted in March raised the jail term for sedition to seven years.

In response to the verdict, the European Union called on Hong Kong to “stop prosecuting journalists”.

“The ruling risks inhibiting the pluralistic exchange of ideas and the free flow of information, both cornerstones of the economic success of Hong Kong,” a EU spokesperson said.

Speaking outside court, police chief superintendent Steve Li said the verdict “clearly illustrated the necessity and lawfulness” of the enforcement actions in 2021 against Stand News.

Asked if the verdict would further affect press freedom, Li said it would “actually help”.

“It would let everyone know what kind of problems could risk breaching the law,” he said.

Not seditious

But Beh Lih Yi from the Committee to Protect Journalists said the ruling showed that Hong Kong was “descending further into authoritarianism”.

“Journalism is not seditious,” she said.

Sarah Brooks, Amnesty International’s China Director, called the verdict “one more nail in the coffin for press freedom in Hong Kong”.

Hong Kong has seen its standing in global press freedom rankings plummet in recent years.

Chung had testified that the outlet was a platform for free speech and defended his decisions to publish articles critical of the government.

But prosecutors accused them of bringing “hatred or contempt” to the Chinese and Hong Kong governments.

More than 100 people, including supporters and media professionals, queued up for spots in the public gallery on Thursday morning.

The verdict was also attended by representatives from various consulates — including the United States, Britain, France, European Union, and Australia.

Doctors Remove Cricket Ball-Sized Hairball From 8-Year-Old's Stomach

Doctors Remove Cricket Ball-Sized Hairball From 8-Year-Old's Stomach In Bengaluru

New Delhi:

In a rare case, doctors in Bengaluru removed a massive hairball — as large as a cricket ball — from the stomach of an 8-year-old girl, the hospital said on Wednesday.

The girl Aditi (name changed) had a rare case of trichophagia — the compulsive habit of eating hair, also known as the Rapunzel syndrome.

Her parents were baffled by her repeated bouts of poor appetite and frequent vomiting over the last two years. They took her to many doctors including paediatricians, general physicians, and ENT specialists hoping to identify the problem and a cure for her condition.

They diagnosed Aditi’s condition to be gastritis and prescribed pills accordingly.

However, doctors at Aster’s Children and Women Hospital, Bengaluru, found that she had a trichobezoar — a term that describes all the hair mass that had accumulated in her gastrointestinal tract.

“Trichobezoar is an extremely rare condition and especially very rare in a child as young as Aditi. It is often associated with trichophagia, a psychological disorder where individuals eat hair. While commonly seen in adolescent girls, finding this in a much younger child highlights the uniqueness of this case,” Dr. Manjiri Somashekhar, Lead and Senior Consultant – Paediatric Surgery told IANS

An open stomach surgery, also known as laparotomy, had to be performed on Aditi because the hairball was very large and sticky and the situation was too complicated for an endoscopy to be performed.

This method, which was done in a total of two and a half hours, proved fruitful because it prevented any leakage into the peritoneal cavity, the doctor said.

If left undiagnosed, her condition could have led to severe malnutrition, anaemia, and significant bleeding from the stomach.

Following the surgery, she was placed on a special diet and continues to receive counselling and regular monitoring, the doctor said.

Mumbai:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Palghar and Mumbai on Friday to lay the foundation stone for the prestigious greenfield Vadhvan Port, address the Global Fintech Fest and launch other projects, officials said here on Thursday.

Expected to become a growth engine in the coming years along India’s western coast, on completion, the all-weather Vadhvan Port with a deep draft will be one of the top ten sea-ports in the world, to cost a whopping Rs 76,220 crore including the land acquisition costs.

PM Modi will preside over its foundation laying ceremony at CIDCO Grounds in Palghar on Friday morning, around 140 km from Mumbai, near the Maharashtra-Gujarat state boundary.

The project was delayed for decades owing to protests by local farmers and fishers, and is being built by the Vadhvan Port Project Ltd (VPPL), an SPV formed jointly by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and Maharashtra Maritime Board with shareholding of 74 per cent and 26 per cent, respectively.

The project would comprise the core infrastructure, terminals, and other commercial infrastructure in the PPP mode, plus road links with the National Highways, rail connections including the Dedicated Rail Freight Corridor.

These include nine terminals, each to be one-km long, four multipurpose berths, including the coastal berth, four liquid cargo berths, a coast guard berth and a Ro-Ro berth.

The project will see reclamation of 1,448 hectare of the Arabian Sea and building a 10.14 km offshore breakwater and container/cargo storage zones.

The port will create a cumulative capacity of 298 million metric tonnes per annum, including around 23.2 TEUs of container handling capacity, in alignment with the PM Gati Shakti initiative.

The capacities created shall aid the EXIM trade flow through IMEEC (India Middle East Europe Economic Corridor) and INSTC (International North South Transportation Corridor).

The world-class maritime facilities shall boost PPPs and leverage efficiencies and modern tech to create the state-of-the art terminals equipped to handle mainline mega-vessels plying on international shipping lines connecting the Far East, Middle East, Europe, Africa and the Americas.

The Vadhvan Port would create job opportunities for around 1.20 lakh people and contribute to the local and national economies.

PM Modi shall be joined by Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonawal, S.P. Singh Baghel and George Kurian, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.

Besides, PM Modi will launch 218 fisheries projects worth Rs 1,560 crore to give a fillip to local infrastructure and more than five lakh jobs for the fisheries sector, the development of Integrated Aquaparks, etc.

PM Modi will set rolling the National Roll Out of Vessel Communication and Support System costing Rs 360 crore, by which 100,000 transponders will be installed in phases on mechanised/motorised fishing vessels in 13 coastal states.

Later in the afternoon, PM Modi will fly to Mumbai for a special session of Global Fintech at the Jio Convention Centre.

New Delhi: Shares of companies led by Anil Ambani on Friday fell sharply after Sebi barred him and 24 other entities, including former key officials of RHFL, from the securities market for five years for diversion of funds from the company.

The stock of Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RHFL) fell 5.12 per cent to Rs 4.45 on the NSE, and 4.90 per cent to Rs 4.46 on the BSE.

Reliance Infrastructure shares tumbled 10.83 per cent to trade at Rs 209.90 apiece on the BSE. On the NSE, it plunged 8.89 per cent to Rs 214.76.

Further, Reliance Power stock declined 5 per cent each to Rs 34.45 and Rs 34.48 on BSE and NSE, also its lower price band.

In the mid-session trade, the 30-share BSE Sensex rose 57.32 points or 0.07 per cent to trade at 81,110.51, while NSE Nifty climbed 29.35 points or 0.12 per cent to 24,840.85.

On Thursday, Sebi barred industrialist Anil Ambani, 24 other entities, including former key officials of RHFL from the securities market for five years for diversion of funds from the company.

Sebi has imposed a penalty of Rs 25 crore on Ambani and restrained him from being associated with the securities market, including as a director or key managerial personnel in any listed company, or any intermediary registered with the market regulator, for a period of five years.

Also, the regulator barred RHFL from the securities market for six months and slapped a fine of Rs 6 lakh on it.

Passing the final order in the RHFL matter, Sebi found that Ambani, with the help of RHFL’s key managerial personnel, had orchestrated a fraudulent scheme to siphon off funds from RHFL by disguising them as loans to entities linked to him.

In February 2022, markets watchdog Sebi had passed an interim order and restrained RHFL, Ambani and three other individuals (Amit Bapna, Ravindra Sudhakar and Pinkesh R Shah) from the securities market till further orders, for allegedly siphoning off funds from the company.
