Israeli soldiers sexually harassing Palestinian women in West Bank: Report

In yet another shocking revelation, Israeli forces have increasingly been sexually harassing Palestinian women at checkpoints in the city of al-Khalil and elsewhere across the occupied West.

According to testimonies reported by Haaretz on Thursday, in one incident, a young Palestinian woman said an Israeli soldier exposed himself to her at a checkpoint on August 17.

The woman said she was crossing the Tamar checkpoint in the Tel Rumeida neighborhood when the soldier stopped her and instructed her to open her bag. After she complied, he took down part of his trousers.

“Out of shock, I left the checkpoint and didn’t know what was happening, I felt as if someone had given me a slap,” she was quoted as saying.

The woman was further threatened when she later complained about her harasser.

“I was exhausted and depressed by it. Now it’s easier for me, but when I want to go through the checkpoint I’m afraid the same thing will happen again,” the woman said.

Following the incident, other women reported similar humiliating treatment by Israeli soldiers at checkpoints in recent weeks.

One young woman reported that an Israeli soldier took photos of her and her sister when they were crossing the same checkpoint.

Another reported that an Israeli soldier searched her phone while holding her hand.

“He grabbed my hand and told me to open the phone. I told him these were my private photos, why should I open them?” she said.

Others reported experiencing regular verbal abuse as they passed checkpoints.

Local Palestinian residents also reported that since metal detectors were installed following October 7, women are sometimes required to remove their clothing.

In some cases, women reported being instructed to remove their hijabs (Islamic veils).

In June, a UN report found that Israeli authorities had systematically subjected Palestinian women and girls to sexual violence. The vicious methods included forced nudity, public stripping, sexualized torture and harassment.

The report concluded that the abuses form part of the Israeli forces’ operating procedures.

“These acts were intended to humiliate and degrade the victims and the Palestinian community at large, by perpetuating gender stereotypes that create a sense of shame, subordination, emasculation and inferiority,” the report read.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women and Girls, Reem al-Salem, earlier this year expressed her deep concern about the increasing cases of rape committed by Israeli soldiers against Palestinian women at the al-Shifa Hospital in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian prisoner support organizations have already urged international institutions to “take action” as a panel of UN experts said the reports of sexual assault against Palestinian women in Israeli detention were “credible.”

Tehran, Ashgabat agree to expand customs cooperation

In a meeting held between President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) Mohammad Rezvanifar and Chairman of State Customs Service of Turkmenistan Maksat Khudaikulyev in Tehran, the two sides emphasized expanding and broadening cooperation in various fields.

IRICA chief expressed his satisfaction with the increase in the volume of trade exchanges between the two countries and stated that that Iran and Turkmenistan exchanged 1.4 million tons of products, valued at $450 million, last year (March 21, 2023 to March 20, 2024).

Rezvanifar pointed out that joint bilateral and cross-border meetings will play an effective role in increasing the volume of trade between the two countries and called for setting up joint meetings.

The chairman of State Customs Service of Turkmenistan, for his part, welcomed the development of trade exchanges between the two countries in the recent years, adding that the trade volume between Iran and Turkmenistan is on the upward trajectory.

Maksat Khudaikulyev called for the exchange of experiences and development of educational-training cooperation between the customs of the two countries an offer that was welcomed by the head of Iran’s customs chief.

The borders of the two countries have great potentials and Turkmenistan Customs Office is ready to provide customs services at Sarakhs border crossing around the clock, he stressed.

During the meeting, the two sides decided to hold expert-level meetings between the two countries within the next month.

Nursing Injury, India's Aruna Tanwar Loses In Taekwondo Paralympics RO16

India’s Aruna Tanwar suffered a heavy 0-19 defeat to Nurcihan Ekinci of Turkey in a round of 16 contest in women’s K 44-47kg category of the Paris Paralympics on Thursday. Aruna was absolutely no match to her opponent from Turkey who garnered points at will in the five-minute round. Ekinci scored two points from body kick nine times during the contest while the Indian also conceded one penalty point (gam-jeom). K44 category includes athletes who have impairments in one arm above the elbow.

Para taekwondo was introduced during Tokyo Paralympics in 2021. Athletes will compete in  five separate weight categories for each gender.

In Para taekwondo, matches are held in a one round contest, lasting up to five minutes.

One key difference with the able-bodied Olympic Games is that kicks to the head and punches are not allowed because not all athletes can block in the same way.

Athletes wear protective equipment and ‘sensor socks’, which determines if a point is scored when hitting their opponent’s torso.

Athletes get two points for a regular kick, three points for a turning kick and four points for a spinning kick.

Fouls like head kicks, grabbing, pushing, kicks below the belt or stepping out of bound result to a gam-jeom, a penalty that gives a point to the opponent.

LGBTQ Persons Can Open Joint Bank Account: Finance Ministry

LGBTQ Persons Can Open Joint Bank Account: Finance Ministry

New Delhi:

The finance ministry on Thursday said there are no restrictions for persons of the LGBTQ community to open a joint bank account and to nominate a person in a queer relationship as a nominee.

“This is to clarify that there are no restrictions for persons of the queer community to open a joint bank account and also to nominate a person in the queer relationship as a nominee to receive the balance in the account in the event of the account holder,” the finance ministry said in an advisory dated August 28.

The advisory for Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community (LGBT community) from the ministry comes in view of the Supreme Court order dated October 17, 2023, in the case of Supriyo@Supriya Chakraborty and another vs Union of India (Writ Petition Civil No. 1011/2022).

A clarification in this regard has also been issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to all the scheduled commercial banks on August 21, 2024, the advisory by the Department of Financial Services under the finance ministry said.

The RBI, in 2015, directed banks to include a separate column ‘third gender’ in all their forms and applications to help transgender persons open bank accounts and avail of related services.

Following the 2015 order, several banks launched services catering to transgender.

ESAF Small Finance Bank Ltd, in 2022, launched a ‘Rainbow Savings Account’ exclusively for the transgender community, offering a host of features, including high savings rates and advanced debit card facilities.

Following the Supreme Court judgment dated October 17, 2023, the Centre in April 2024 constituted a six-member committee chaired by the Cabinet Secretary to examine the various issues relating to the queer community.

The panel was tasked to examine measures that can be taken to ensure there is no discrimination against LGBTQ people in access to goods and services and measures that can be taken to ensure that the LGBTQ community does not face any threat of violence, harassment or coercion.

The Man With 4 Passports: Telegram CEO Pavel Durov's International Network

The Man With 4 Passports: Telegram CEO Pavel Durov's International Network

Paris, France:

The arrest and charging by France of Telegram founder Pavel Durov has thrown a spotlight on the international connections of a man with at least four passports and high-level contacts but who has also aroused the attention of security agencies around the world.

Born in 1984 under the USSR into a family of academics in Leningrad, now known as Saint Petersburg, Durov spent his childhood in Italy before his family returned to Russia when the Soviet Union fell.

He stopped living in Russia a decade ago as he set up the Telegram messenger, picking up the citizenship of the Caribbean archipelago of Saint Kitts and Nevis as he sought a base.

Finally basing his company in Dubai, he was given Emirati citizenship in 2021 and in the same year, via a special procedure that remains shrouded in secrecy, French nationality.

Here AFP looks at Durov’s key relationships with world powers.

Russia

Durov says he left Russia in 2014, accusing Kremlin allies of seizing ownership of his first social network, the Russian-language VKontakte, after he refused to hand over data of users involved in 2011-2012 protests in Russia and then 2013-2014 demonstrations in Ukraine.

He was regarded by many at the time as a dissident. The Russian authorities in later years sought to block Telegram but unsuccessfully, and the app is seen as a key tool for the military in the invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking to US right-wing talk show host Tucker Carlson in an interview in April, Durov said only people with “very limited knowledge of where Telegram came from” could claim it was an instrument of the Russian government.

But Moscow has in no way disowned Durov during his current legal problems, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warning France against turning the case into “political persecution”.

According to the Vazhnye Istorii news site, citing leaked border data, his departure from Russia was anything but an abrupt exile and he visited the country more than 50 times between 2015 and 2021.

France

Media have repeatedly noted that Durov’s reception when he was arrested on arrival at Paris Le Bourget airport Saturday was in stark contrast to previous visits.

Le Monde newspaper reported Wednesday that Durov had met President Emmanuel Macron on several occasions prior to receiving French nationality in 2021, via a special procedure reserved for those deemed to have made a special contribution to France.

A source close to the case, who asked not to be named, told AFP on Thursday that after his arrest Durov requested that French telecoms tycoon Xavier Niel, chairman and founder of the Iliad mobile operator and seen as close to Macron, be informed of his arrest.

Durov has said his name in his French passport is written as Paul du Rove, a humorous French translation. His personal Telegram channel is called “Du Rove’s Channel”.

Another source close to the investigation said Durov had emphasised his links to the French head of state during questioning.

Both Pavel Durov and his elder brother Nikolai, a lower-profile figure seen as the mathematical brain behind Telegram, have been wanted by France since March this year.

United Arab Emirates

Durov says he chose to base Telegram in Dubai after finding the UAE offered a far better business climate than European cities, allowing the company to hire the best people, enjoy a tax-efficient regime and the city’s infrastructure.

“We tried several places. We first went to Berlin… We tried London, Singapore. San Francisco. You name it — we have been everywhere,” Durov told Carlson.

“The bureaucratic hurdles were too difficult to overcome,” whereas the UAE “turned out to be a great place”, he said, lauding the state as “a neutral place… not aligned geopolitically”.

The United States

There is no indication Durov ever sought US citizenship but his interview with Carlson threw up some interesting — if unconfirmed — insights about his relationship with the country.

He said that at one point he thought San Francisco “would be the place for us” but he was then attacked by “three big guys” who tried to grab his phone while he was tweeting about meeting then Twitter chief Jack Dorsey.

Durov claimed to have come out the better in the altercation. “There was a short fight and a bit of blood involved.”

He also said US security agencies gave him “too much attention” whenever he visited, complaining that two FBI agents would always meet him at the airport asking questions.Durov’s international network

US military conducts live-fire drills in South Korea to test deployment readiness

The US military has conducted live-fire drills in South Korea to test deployment readiness to the Korean Peninsula.

The drills conducted by the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division based in Texas, took place at Rodriguez Live Fire Complex in Pocheon, north of Seoul and less than 30 km (19 miles) from the heavily fortified border with North Korea, the military said.

The aims were to master their proficiency in rapid responses from the United States, the military added.

This temporary deployment comes in addition to the roughly 28,500 American troops that are stationed in South Korea as part of efforts to deter nuclear-armed North Korea.

South Korea began shouldering the costs of US deployments, used to fund local labor, the construction of military installations and other logistics support, in the early 1990s.

The live-fire drills on Wednesday come as South Korea and the USFU are set to conduct their annual summertime war games next week to ramp up their capability in the face of North Korea’s weapons.

North Korea has slammed South’s war games as “provocation” and warned of serious consequences.

UTT 2024: Sathiyan Shines In Dabang Delhi's 9-6 Win Over Goa Challengers

Dabang Delhi TTC captain Sathiyan Gnanasekaran put on a dazzling show against Athlead Goa Challengers’ Mihai Bobocica at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Wednesday, setting the stage for his team’s first win of UTT 2024. In the battle of the Olympians, Bobocica struck first, taking Game 1 11-8 via a 23-shot rally, the longest of the season so far. However, Sathiyan retaliated with an inspired comeback and took games two and three to claim the match.

The franchise-based league is promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani under the auspices of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI).

In the tie’s first women’s singles, Dabang Delhi TTC’s Orawan Paranang scripted history by becoming the first paddler to defeat Yangzi Liu in UTT. Paranang stunned her opponent with an 11-7 win in Game 1, before taking Game 2 and, consequently, the match on a Golden Point. Liu claimed Game 3 to reduce the deficit of her defeat.

In the mixed doubles that followed, Paranang got the better of Liu again, this time alongside her partner Sathiyan. The Dabang Delhi TTC pair together beat Liu and Harmeet Desai, two games to one.

Later, in the second men’s singles, Athlead Goa Challengers captain Harmeet bounced back from a game down to beat Andreas Levenko 2-1. The UTT 2023 winner sustained the Austrian’s aggressive forehand attacks, bounced back in style, and registered his first match win of this season.

Diya Chitale, who recorded her first win in Dabang Delhi TTC’s previous tie, made it two in a row for herself with her decisive win over Athlead Goa Challengers’ Yashaswini Ghorpade. Her triumph, as it happened, led the team from Delhi over the line.

For their role in Dabang Delhi TTC’s win, Sathiyan and Paranang claimed the Indian and the Foreign Player of the Tie honours, respectively. Sathiyan also took home the DafaNews Shot of the Tie gong, while Bobocica, unsurprisingly, won the ACT Fastest Rally of the Tie.

Thursday’s sole tie will see PBG Bengaluru Smashers take on Jaipur Patriots at 19:30, with the former looking to prolong their unbeaten run to three ties in UTT 2024.

UTT 2024 is being broadcast live on Sports18 Khel and streamed online on JioCinema (India) and Facebook Live (Outside India). Tickets are available online on BookMyShow and offline at the box office near Gate no. 1 of the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.
