One in five Gazans facing extreme lack of food: WHO chief

“A high risk of famine persists across Gaza as long as the conflict continues. One in five people in Gaza experience an extreme lack of food. Almost all people in the Strip face high levels of acute food insecurity,” he wrote on the X social media platform.

The WHO chief emphasized that “only an end to the hostilities and immediate, unimpeded and sustained humanitarian access can reduce the risk of a famine occurring in the Gaza Strip.”

Israel waged its brutal war on besieged Gaza on October 7 after Hamas carried out an unprecedented operation against the occupying entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Euro 2024: England secures Group C Win with draw; Serbia holds Denmark

Berlin: England claimed the top spot in Group C despite being held to a goalless stalemate by stubborn Slovenia while Denmark finished second after sharing the spoils with eliminated Serbia in the last round of group play.

Slovenia started highly motivated into the encounter knowing that at least one point would see them advance into the knockout stage whereas the Three Lions were already through.

Benjamin Sesko created the first clearcut opportunity after testing England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with a header from close range in the fifth minute, reports Xinhua.

England sparked to life midway through the first half and thought it had broken the deadlock but for all that Bukayo Saka’s goal was ruled offside.

Harry Kane posed threat in the closing stage of the first half after heading narrowly wide following Kieran Trippier’s dangerous cross into the box.

After the break, chances were at premium as England controlled possession without doing damage to Slovenia’s well-positioned defence.

Slovenia’s defence kept England on the distance and secured one point to keep its Euro campaign alive.

“We wanted to complete the group stage atop the standings and to be in control of our own destiny. It was a tough match, but we improved a bit compared to our last game. We controlled the ball but failed to finish the job in the final third,” said Kane.

England coach Gareth Southgate added: “We were the better team and dominated. We had several chances to win the game but me missed the final pass.”

In the other Group C clash, Denmark couldn’t break the deadlock against Serbia, but the goalless draw was enough for the Danes to reach the knockout stage as runner-up.

With the results, England tops the group with five points, followed by Denmark, Slovenia (both 3 points) and Serbia (2 points).

The top two of each of the six groups and the best four third finishers will enter the round-of-16 knockout stage.

Mumbai: The rupee witnessed range-bound trading against the US dollar in early trade on Monday, amid a negative trend in the domestic equity market.

Forex traders said the strength of the American currency in the overseas market and elevated crude oil prices also weighed on the local unit and restricted the upmove.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.52 and gained further to trade at 83.45 against the greenback in initial deals, registering an increase of 12 paise from its previous closing level.

On Friday, the rupee hit the lowest level of 83.63 but finally settled at 83.57 against the dollar, registering a gain of 4 paise from its previous close.

“Price action on Friday seemed to indicate purposeful intervention by the central bank,” IFA Global said in a research note, adding that the rupee is likely to trade in 83.40-83.67 range with sideways price action.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.03 per cent higher at 105.82.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, fell 0.06 per cent to $85.19 per barrel.

“Indian rupee which gained slightly on Friday and is expected to remain range-bound with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) sitting on the fence near to 83.60 to protect it after the USD/INR pair made an all-time low of 83.67 last week on constant equity-related outflows and the stronger dollar index,” said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.

Meanwhile, India’s forex reserves dropped by $2.922 billion to $652.895 billion for the week ended June 14, the Reserve Bank said on Friday.

Hezbollah Fires Rockets At Israeli Base, Says 4 Fighters Killed

Hezbollah Fires Rockets At Israeli Base, Says 4 Fighters Killed

On the Israeli side, at least 15 soldiers and 11 civilians have been killed, according to authorities.

Beirut:

Hezbollah said it fired “dozens” of rockets Thursday at a military base in northern Israel in retaliation for Israeli strikes on Lebanon, announcing four of its fighters had been killed.

Fears of all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah have risen in recent weeks as threats have intensified between the sides, which have traded regular cross-border fire since Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel sparked war in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas ally Hezbollah said that “in response to the enemy attacks that targeted the city of Nabatiyeh and village of Sohmor”, its fighters bombed “the main air and missile defence base of the (Israeli) northern area command… with dozens of Katyusha rockets”.

It said in separate statements that four of its fighters, one from eastern Lebanon’s Sohmor, had been killed, and claimed two other attacks on Israeli troops and positions, including one with drones.

The Israeli military said in a statement that “approximately 35 launches were identified crossing from Lebanon”.

Air defences “successfully intercepted most of the launches. No injuries were reported,” it added.

It said air strikes “eliminated” three Hezbollah operatives, one in the Sohmor area and two in the country’s south.

The military also said that “two UAVs (drones) that were identified crossing from Lebanon fell” in northern Israel, reporting no injuries.

Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported Israeli attacks in several areas of south Lebanon on Thursday, and said a strike a day earlier in Nabatiyeh wounded “more than 20” people when a two-storey building was targeted.

Fears have grown the Gaza war could become a regional conflagration if the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, which so far has been largely limited to the border area, expands.

France’s foreign ministry said Thursday that Paris was “extremely concerned” about the fighting, calling “all sides to exercise the greatest restraint”.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said during a visit to Washington on Wednesday that his country did not want war in Lebanon, but could send it back to the “Stone Age” if diplomacy failed.

Amid Western diplomatic efforts to dial down tensions in recent months, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Tuesday visited Beirut and cautioned that “miscalculation” could trigger all-out war, also urging “extreme restraint”.

The violence has killed 485 people in Lebanon, most of them fighters but also including 94 civilians, according to an AFP tally.

On the Israeli side, at least 15 soldiers and 11 civilians have been killed, according to authorities.

“…Slow Down When It’s Raining…: Cyberabad Traffic Police take dig at Afghan cricket team

By Dhruv Jetty-

Afghanistan made history on Tuesday after beating Bangladesh in an absolute thriller to qualify for their first ever ICC-tournament semi finals. The Afghans defeated Bangladesh by 8 runs in a match that was regularly interrupted by rain.

Despite the high quality action, the moment of the match certainly belonged to Afghan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib. In the 12th over of the second innings, Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott was seen asking his team to slow down the game, as Bangladesh was behind the DLS par score at that time. Obeying his coach’s command, Gulbadin Naib, who was fielding in the slips, suddenly held his hamstrings and went down. Seeing Naib in pain, the umpire paused the game. He was later helped walk off the field by his fellow Afghan player Naveen ul-Haq.

The viral clip made rounds on social media and has created a debate between many ardent cricket fans. Some believe that what Naib did was against the spirit of the game, but some believe it was an attempt to win the game for his team.

Making use of the viral clip, Cyberabad Traffic Police made a quirky post on their official X (formerly Twitter) account to raise awareness about road safety during monsoons.

The post was captioned: “Road Safety Lessons from Today’s Match: Slow Down When It’s Raining.
#AfgvsBan #GulbadinNaib”

Naib returned to the field to bowl and he also picked the wicket of Tanzim Hasan Sakib. Afghanistan will now face South Africa in the first semi final, and the second semi final will be played between England and India.
