Julian Assange’s wife thanks Australian lawmakers for WikiLeaks founder’s freedom

Melbourne: Stella Assange thanked the spectrum of lawmakers who campaigned for her husband, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, to be freed during her visit Thursday to Australia’s Parliament House, where political leaders differed over how welcome the convicted felon was in his homeland.

“Julian is overjoyed and so grateful to the Australian people, to the members of Parliament and to the government and also the opposition who came together to voice the need for his release,” Stella said.

Assange has made no public comment since he arrived in Australia on Wednesday after pleading guilty to obtaining and publishing US military secrets in a deal with US Justice Department prosecutors that ended his 14-year legal battle for freedom.

The Bring Julian Assange Home Parliamentary Group began with a few federal lawmakers in 2019 and expanded to 47 — one of five of the total in Canberra — as a consensus grew that the prosecution over WikiLeaks’ release of almost half a million documents relating to the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2010 had taken too long.

His lawyers now want to swing that public and political support behind a campaign to have Assange’s conviction pardoned.

“President (Joe) Biden or any subsequent president absolutely can and, in my mind, should issue a pardon to Julian Assange,” lawyer Barry Pollack said.

But while Australian lawmakers largely agreed that the time had come for Assange to be brought home, they disagreed on whether he deserved the same level of support as Australians recently released from arbitrary detention in China, Iran and Myanmar thanks to government intervention.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been credited with the diplomatic coup that enabled Assange to be released from a London prison to travel to Northern Mariana Islands, a US commonwealth in the Western Pacific where he pleaded guilty to a single charge under the Espionage Act.

With credit given for the five years Assange had spent in Belmarsh Prison fighting extradition, he was allowed to return to Australia without serving any more jail time.

Opposition lawmakers argue Albanese risked damaging relations with the United States, Australia’s most important security partner, by telephoning Assange moments after the former computer hacker had landed in Canberra.

“It’s not necessary nor appropriate for Anthony Albanese to welcome home Julian Assange on the same day he’s admitted to espionage acts,” opposition spokesperson on foreign affairs Simon Birmingham said. But Stella argued her husband should never have been charged.

“He was pleading guilty to committing journalism. This case criminalises journalism, journalistic activity, standard journalist activity of news gathering and publishing,” she said.

Questioned at a news conference after Assange’s return, Albanese declined to say whether he considered him a journalist who had been wrongly pursued by US authorities.

“I think that there will continue to be different views about Julian Assange and his activity,” Albanese said. “My role as Prime Minister has been to firmly say that whatever the views that people have, there was no purpose to be served by this ongoing incarceration,” he added.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong distanced the government from the Assange campaign for the crime to be pardoned. “That is a matter for Mr. Assange and his legal team and the decision on that is a matter for the United States,” Wong said. “What we are pleased about is that he is home. We did think his incarceration had dragged on,” she added.

Stella, a South Africa-born lawyer who married her husband in prison in 2022, has given few clues to his future career.

“He plans to swim in the ocean every day. He plans to sleep in a real bed. He plans to taste real food and he plans to enjoy his freedom,” she said. “Julian is the most principled man I know and he will always defend human rights and speak out against injustice and he can choose how he does that, because he is a free man,” she added.

US provided $6.5 billion in security aid to Israel since Gaza war: Report

The United States has reportedly provided $6.5 billion in security assistance to Israel since the occupying regime launched its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.

Citing an unnamed senior official of US President Joe Biden’s administration, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that almost half of the amount was provided last month alone.

“This is a massive, massive undertaking,” the official said, adding that the figure was announced during discussions between senior White House officials and Israel’s minister of military affairs Yoav Gallant in Washington this week.

The report said the US official had disclosed the amount “as an indication of the depth and complexity of US support for Israel.”

It further said that the remarks counter claims by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Washington had placed “bottlenecks” in its arms flow.

In a video posted to X on Tuesday, Netanyahu alleged that the Biden administration was “withholding” weapons and ammunition bound for Tel Aviv.

Israel waged its brutal Gaza onslaught on October 7 following a historic operation by the Palestinian Hamas resistance group against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

However, almost nine months into the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has failed to achieve its objectives in Gaza despite killing at least 37,718 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injuring over 86,377 others.

The US remains Israel’s most important ally and biggest supplier of arms. It has provided Israel with weapons and intelligence support during the Gaza war, and blocked UN resolutions calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in the besieged Palestinian territory.

‘Jai Palestine’ slogan: Complaints demand Owaisi’s disqualification by President

New Delhi: Several complaints have been filed before President Droupadi Murmu seeking immediate disqualification of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi who raised a slogan in favour of Palestine during his swearing-in as the Lok Sabha MP on Tuesday.

One of the complaints filed by Supreme Court lawyer Alakh Alok Srivastava said that by publicly raising the pro-Palestine slogan ‘Jai Palestine’, that too in the Indian Parliament, Owaisi has clearly acknowledged his deep-rooted allegiance and adherence to a foreign country.

It added that Owaisi is liable to be forthwith disqualified from being a Member of Parliament, as per Article 102 (d) of the Constitution of India, which provides for disqualification for membership if a person is under “any acknowledgement of allegiance or adherence to a foreign State.”

“This is not the first time when Mr Owaisi has displayed his unequivocal loyalty, support and allegiance to the said foreign country ‘Palestine’. Rather, it is a matter of record that Mr. Owaisi has been exhibiting his consistent support, allegiance and adherence to the said foreign state for the last many years,” the complaint read.

Further, it said that if the action is not taken against Owaisi, then it will become a precedent and will have disastrous consequences for our nation and the Hyderabad lawmaker be disqualified in the interest of the integrity and unity of Bharat.

The AIMIM chief sparked a major controversy in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday by chanting ‘Jai Palestine’ in the House. Soon after taking oath as MP in the 18th Lok Sabha, Owaisi said: “Jai Bhim, Jai Mim, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine, Takbeer Allahu Akbar.”

US Voters Prefer Biden's Democracy Approach, Trump's Economy Plan: Report

US Voters Prefer Biden's Democracy Approach, Trump's Economy Plan: Report

Joe Biden also had an edge over Donald Trump on healthcare policy – 40% to 29%: Report (File)

Washington:

US voters see Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump as the better candidate for the economy but prefer his Democratic rival President Joe Biden’s approach on preserving democracy, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

The three-day poll that concluded on Sunday showed that less than five months before the Nov. 5 election, the electorate is divided on the candidates’ approach on the issues that respondents view as the top two problems facing the nation.

Biden’s approval rating, measured across all respondents in the poll, rose marginally to 37% from 36% in May when it tied the lowest reading of his presidency. Many Democrats worry Biden could be stung by voter concerns over his age – at 81 he’s the oldest U.S. president to hold the office – and disapproval within his party of his support of Israel’s war against Hamas.

When asked which of the two candidates had a better approach for the economy – the No. 1 concern for respondents – registered voters picked Trump 43% to 37%. Voters have been stung by several years of fast-rising consumer prices, though inflation has slowed considerably in recent months and the jobless rate has been below 4% for more than two years.

The Republican had a more significant edge – 44% to 31% – on immigration. Immigrants made up 13.9% of the country in 2022, the highest share in over a century. Trump has taken aim at immigrants in the country illegally. Trump was favored 40% to 35% on foreign conflicts and terrorism.

But Biden had the edge over Trump on responding to political extremism and threats to democracy, respondents’ No. 2 concern, with registered voters picking the Democrat over Trump by 39% to 33%.

Trump, who was convicted last month on criminal charges he falsified business records, is awaiting three more criminal trials, two of which are tied to his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Biden. Trump, who falsely claims his 2020 election defeat resulted from fraud, included the claim in a fiery speech shortly before hundreds of his supporters rushed into the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Biden also had an edge over Trump on healthcare policy – 40% to 29%. Biden was vice president in 2010 when then-President Barack Obama pushed a landmark health reform through Congress that dramatically increased access to health insurance.

Previous Reuters/Ipsos polls have shown Biden and Trump neck-and-neck in the presidential race, though a number of polls in battleground states have shown Trump ahead in recent months.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted nationwide and online, collected responses from 1,019 U.S. adults, including 856 registered voters. It had a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points for all respondents and 3.5 percentage points for registered voters.

Om Birla re-elected as Lok Sabha Speaker

New Delhi: Om Birla, BJP MP from Kota-Bundi, was on Wednesday elected by voice vote as the Lok Sabha Speaker for the second consecutive time.

With this win, Birla became the first BJP leader to serve the coveted position for the second consecutive time.

Protem Speaker of the House Bhartruhari Mahtab announced the election of Om Birla as Lok Sabha Speaker.

PM Narendra Modi and Leader of the Opposition in Lower House Rahul Gandhi took him to the chair and congratulated him after Birla assumed the post.

Before the elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with other NDA leaders, proposed to elect Om Birla for the post.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the Opposition alliance, Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Arvind Sawant proposed K. Suresh’s name for the Speaker’s post.

The majority was, however, in the NDA’s favour, with 297 MPs voting for Om Birla, while the Opposition got 232.

Earlier, on Tuesday, Birla was picked as the NDA’s candidate for the Speaker’s post. Union Minister Rajnath Singh and some senior leaders also tried to reach out to the leaders of opposition parties to reach a consensus on Birla’s name.

Rahul Gandhi had said that the Opposition would support the NDA candidate, but at the last moment, it announced Congress MP K. Suresh as its candidate.

Notably, Om Birla made several significant decisions as Speaker during Modi 2.0’s tenure.

Birla’s political journey started in 1977 from student union elections which took him to the rank of Lok Sabha Speaker. Om Birla entered mainstream politics in 2003 by winning the assembly elections from the Kota seat.

Meanwhile, there is a festive atmosphere in Kota after Birla became Lok Sabha Speaker for the second time. While BJP workers are celebrating in Kota by bursting crackers and distributing sweets, Om Birla’s family members are in Delhi.

Preparations for Bonalu celebrations underway in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Preparations for upcoming Bonalu celebrations in the twin cities have begun with authorities and temple committees organising preliminary meetings to discuss arrangements. This year the celebrations are set to take place from July 7 to August 4.

Along with the state-level review, meetings are being held locally with representatives from temples, GHMC, police, electricity and water board, transport department, and others. On Thursday, BC Welfare and Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar along with GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi and others visited the Ujjaini Mahakali Temple in Secunderabad.

Being one of the prime locations for the yearly Bonalu Jathara, the minister stressed on ensuring that arrangements are up to the mark. A security and traffic diversion plan is soon expected to be released by the officials. A similar meeting was also held at the Jagadamba Mahakali Temple at Golconda.

In addition to the Bonalu celebrations, arrangements for the upcoming Balkampet Yellamma Kalyanam were also reviewed recently. Since the temple is located on a narrow main road, efforts are underway to facilitate peaceful celebrations without public inconvenience. Continuous monitoring by the police control room in coordination with GHMC and other civic departments will be set up.

Pakistan has Iran's support in new anti-terrorism operation: Islamabad

Pakistan’s Minister of Defense Khawaja Muhammad Asif

Pakistan’s Minister of Defense Khawaja Muhammad Asif says his country has no challenge with Iran regarding the fight against terrorism as Tehran supports Islamabad’s new operation to uproot the scourge.

Asif made the remarks in an interview with a Pakistani news channel on Thursday as he was elaborating on Operation Azm-e-Istehkam or Resolve for Stability aimed at effectively dealing with terrorism and extremism, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

He said Pakistan is determined to uproot terrorism in its southwestern border areas and called for further cooperation of the interim Afghan government in anti-terrorism campaign in border areas.

The problem of terrorism has not been resolved and has adversely affected Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan, the defense chief added.

He noted that Islamabad does not see effective cooperation from its western neighbor as the interim Afghan government refrains from taking necessary steps to deal with terrorism along the common borders.

Asif emphasized that the new anti-terrorism operation will focus on targeting those who disrupt security and mastermind terrorist attacks and will be concentrated in the Pakistani provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan that border Afghanistan to destroy the hideouts of terrorists.

The minister expounded that the operation would be slightly different from the previous ones, adding that action would be taken based on classified information.

He maintained that the operation had no political motives.

“Its sole purpose is to counter the recent surge in terrorism, and that is why it should be supported by everyone.”

The new campaign is the latest in a series of military operations that Pakistan has launched with the intent of crushing armed violence, terrorism and extremism since 2007. The new operation is expected to focus on domestic security threats and militants crossing over from Afghanistan.
