Thousands of Palestinian children buried under rubble in Gaza: UNICEF

The United Nations children’s agency (UNICEF) has drawn attention to the number of child casualties in Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, saying thousands of kids remain buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings in the Palestinian territory.

UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Ted Chaiban made the remarks on Wednesday during a UN Security Council meeting on children and armed conflict.

He said that Palestinian children continue to endure “incomprehensible suffering,” particularly those in the Gaza Strip amid a “staggering” scale of death and destruction there.

Chaiban noted that more than 23,000 cases of children killed or maimed in 2023 have yet to be verified due to insecurity, movement restrictions and significant risks to humanitarian personnel operating in Gaza.

“The bodies of thousands of missing children remain buried under rubble, and none of this includes the thousands of violations reported so far in 2024,” he added.

The UNICEF official also highlighted the obstacles that are impeding aid deliveries to Gaza and thus increasing the number of acutely malnourished children, noting “After nearly nine months of horrible conflict, UNICEF and other humanitarian actors are still struggling to reach those in need.”

He further called for “a complete ceasefire” in Gaza, where many children are losing their lives due to Israel’s starvation imposed on the besieged territory.

Israel unleashed its brutal Gaza onslaught on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out its historic operation against the occupying entity in retaliation for the regime’s intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

So far, the Tel Aviv regime has killed more than 37,718 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured over 86,377 others in Gaza.

Also speaking at the Security Council meeting was Palestine’s UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour who recalled that Israel has killed more children in recent months than in all armed conflict globally over the past 4 years.

He estimated that nearly 16,000 Palestinian children were killed in Israel’s aggression against Gaza while another 21,000 are missing.

The Gaza Strip, once a vibrant place where children set world records in sports, has now been reduced to a graveyard, Mansour said, calling for “collective resolve and responsibility to pressure Israel to stop the madness.”

‘Most of patients were children’

Meanwhile, Adam Hamawy, a former US Army combat surgeon who returned from a medical mission to Gaza, said that children made up most of his patients.

“The level of civilian casualties that I experienced was beyond anything I’d seen before,” the 54-year-old medic told AFP.

“Most of our patients were children under the age of 14.”

Hamawy also said that humanitarian aid must enter Gaza in “sufficient volumes to meet the demands”.

Nalgonda: Officials on alert after spurt in viral fever cases

Hyderabad: An outbreak of viral fevers has turned into a source of major concern in different mandals of Nalgonda district of late. The incidence of dengue is also on the increase. The spurt in fever cases has put the medical and health authorities on alert. The number of outpatient cases being treated at the district headquarters hospital also saw a big rise in the last 10 days, especially after monsoon showers resulted in water stagnation in villages and towns.

Private hospitals were also being overcrowded with fever cases. As many as 38 cases of dengue were reported in the district during the last five months and a majority of them were from the rural pockets in Nalgonda division. Patients with common complaints such as cold, flu and bacterial infections were ending up with fevers with high temperatures. Such ailments were being reported from among children as well.

District Medical and Health authorities have initiated special measures to address the situation. The outbreak of viral fevers and infections is being attributed to the mosquito menace in the city and its surroundings. Officials have made it clear that the all government hospitals have adequate stocks of medicines. The hospitals are fully equipped to provide the patients the best possible medical facilities. Fogging operations in the city and gram panchayats are also being taken up in a big way, they said.

Vijayawada: Addressing the problem of salaries for government employees in the State, Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan said he knew the impact when employees do not get salaries on time, as his father was also a government employee.

Addressing the meeting with Panchayat Raj employees on Tuesday, Kalyan asserted that the NDA government will stand with the employees.

“‘I understand your struggles. I am also the son of a government employee, and my father was a government employee. We used to live on his salary. There were times when we couldn’t pay school fees and were sent out and only allowed back after paying. I know the impact when employees don’t receive their salaries on time, especially at month-end when we struggle to support their families. The NDA government will stand with government employees,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kalyan will undertake an 11-day Varahi Vijaya Deeksha (fast) on June 26, dedicated to Goddess Varahi. During this period, he will consume only milk, fruits, and water, Janasena Party sources said.

This is not the first time Pawan Kalyan has undertaken such a spiritual endeavour. Last year in June, he embarked on a Varahi Vijaya Yatra and performed pujas to Goddess Varahi, followed by a deeksha.

Earlier, leading Telugu film producers met Kalyan on Monday to discuss the challenges facing the Telugu film industry and how to expand the film sector in Andhra Pradesh. The meeting was held at the camp office in Vijayawada.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu said on Tuesday that the development of the State will be taken at a very fast pace.

Addressing a public meeting, Naidu admitted that the new government is now facing several challenges and said that “despite all this, every step will be taken to take the state on a progressive path.

Calling the five-year YSRCP rule a nightmare, he said corruption was rampant in every part of the State. “We will soon publish white papers on the sectors that have been severely affected, and new passbooks for the farmers will be issued soon with an official seal after deleting the photos of the YSRCP president, Jagan Mohan Reddy,” the Chief Minister told the people.

"Why Talk About Only Rohit, Kohli?" Kapil's Honest Question Amid T20 WC

India’s first World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev on Thursday said collective performance, not individual brilliance will be the key factor in deciding whether Rohit Sharma‘s team can end its over-a-decade-long trophy drought by winning the T20 World Cup in the West Indies. India will take on England in the tournament’s semifinal later on Thursday, hoping to make the finals where South Africa are in waiting after annihilating Afghanistan. “Why talk about only Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, or Kuldeep Yadav? Everybody has a role to play. Their job is to win the tournament,” Kapil told PTI Videos in an exclusive interview.

“To win a match, an odd person can come out, but to win a tournament everybody has to work together. If we are going to depend on Bumrah or Arshdeep, then you are going to lose it,” he asserted.

“Let’s talk about the team. That gives you a better perspective rather than the odd player. Yes main player is there and we can go around him. But everybody has to chip in to win the World Cup,” he added.

Kapil pointed out that in his 1983 World Cup-winning team, he wasn’t the only one who performed.

“Roger Binny, Mohinder Amarnath, Kirti Azad, Yashpal Sharma all came out with match-winning performances. If you start depending on one player it means you are not going to win tournaments more often,” he observed.

He wished India good luck ahead of their semi-final match against England and hoped that the Men in Blue clinch the trophy.

“All the Best, good luck, I hope the Indian players, the way they are playing keep on playing like that, they should not have a bad day and be out of the tournament (like) what happened last time in the 50 overs World Cup,” said the iconic all-rounder.

“They are playing well, they are enjoying. Hats off to them. Good luck to them. I wish them all the luck and happiness,” he added.

The 65-year-old, who was elected president of Professional Golf Tour of India on Wednesday, said that he feels proud to see India perceived as title contenders every time they compete in a global event.

“We should be happy that we are able to think that we can win. 20 years back, you weren’t thinking. It’s important that in every tournament India is going as a favourite. That’s a big thing.

“We never thought about that. That’s enough encouragement for a youngster to take up the sport. I am very happy to see where Indian cricket has reached wonderfully well,” he emphasised.

Kapil lauded Bumrah, who has been the star performer for India with 11 wickets in the tournament so far.

“Bumrah is 1000 times better than me. These young boys are far better than us. We had more experience. They are better. They are very good. Outstanding. They are fitter. They are much more hardworking. They are fantastic,” he said.

He, however, played down the role of a captain.

“Everybody can do captaincy. Hardik, Virat, Rohit everyone can do captaincy. When you give ball to somebody, the bowler has to do the job. Yes captain is there to help you out but it’s not like if you don’t win he is not a good captain.”

Mass death of fish: Fishermen demand steps to protect Chitkul lake

Dead fish found floating in the water body at Chitkul village of Sangareddy district on Thursday

Sangareddy: Fishermen of Chitkul village have demanded that the government to divert industrial effluents flowing into the Pedda Cheruvu located in the village.

The demand comes in the wake of a large number of fish being found dead in the lake on Wednesday, leaving about 100 fishermen’s families in shock. Local fishermen had claimed on Wednesday that nearly 10 tonnes of fish died. While the Fisheries department had released 1.2 lakh fishlings into the water body last year, the fishermen had also released fishlings worth Rs.12 lakh by spending from their pocket during the last rainy season.

However, officials of the Pollution Control Board (PCB) and Fisheries Department could not find out yet what led to the lower Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels in the water. The fishermen alleged that the dead fish started floating on Monday, a day after the area witnessed a good amount of rain. Speaking to Telangana Today, Fishermen’s Society president Gyarala Srinivas alleged that some industries might have dumped industrial waste or effluents into the water body. A stream is seen flowing into the Chitkul Pedda Cheruvu from Pashamylaram and Isnapur industrial areas. Showing evidence, the fishermen said there were many industries alongside the stream. However, PCB officials said they had found no evidence of industrial pollution in the water after initial examinations.

Another fisherman, Manne Simhadri, demanded that the government divert the stream straight into Nakkavagu located downstream of Pedda Cheruvu, so that the water could be kept clean. Kattameedhi Mallesh, a 60-year-old member of society, said he had never witnessed such an incident in his lifetime. Asking the officials to find out the exact reason, Mallesh urged the government to extend compensation to the Society. Saying that they were preparing to carry out fishing in a week, the society members said the incident had dashed their hopes of getting good profits this year.

Pune car accident: Minor released, HC states detention in observation home illegal

The court declared the orders sending him to an observation home illegal, emphasizing full compliance with juvenile law and prioritizing justice above all else.

Pune car accident: Minor released, HC states detention in observation home illegal

Pune: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed to immediate release of the 17-year-old boy from the observation home allegedly involved in the Pune car accident. The Juvenile was under observation at home at the Juvenile Justice Board for 36 days after the incident.

The court deemed the orders remanding him to an observation home as illegal and emphasized that the law regarding juveniles must be fully implemented and stated that justice must be prioritized above all else.

The division bench of Justices Bharati Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande of Bombay High Court emphasized that justice must be realized regardless of consequences. The court made it clear that it was not swayed by the uproar surrounding the tragic accident that resulted in the loss of two innocent lives.

The High Court criticized the Juvenile Justice Board’s remand orders as “illegal” and passed without jurisdiction.

The court also reprimanded the police for their handling of the situation, noting that law enforcement agencies had succumbed to public pressure.

The court order stated, “Though the manner in which the entire situation has been handled by the respondents including the investigation wing, we can only express our dismay and perturbation by describing the whole approach as an unfortunate incident and hope and trust that the future course of action to be chartered, shall be in accordance with existing provisions of law, avoiding any haste,

However, at this stage, while pronouncing upon the reliefs sought before us, in the Writ Petition we deem it necessary to discharge our solemn obligation, by adherence to the Rule of Law and we feel bound by it, though the respondents, the law enforcing agencies have succumbed to the public pressure, but we are of the firm opinion that the Rule of law must prevail in every situation, howsoever catastrophic or calamitous the situation may be and as Martin Luther King, has rightly observed, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

“We have all sympathies for the victim and their families, but as a court of law, we are bound to implement the law as it stands,” the HC added.

The court emphasized that regardless of the seriousness of the crime, the accused is still a child under the Juvenile Justice Act and must be treated as such. The Act aims at rehabilitation and social integration of juvenile offenders, and confinement in an observation home is only permissible when bail has not been granted.

HC in its order stated, “For the aforesaid reason, we issue a writ of Habeas Corpus directing the release of the CCL from the Observation Home where he is detained, despite being released on bail by a validly passed order by the Board on 19/5/2024 forthwith. We also quash and set aside the impugned order dated 22/5/2024 and the subsequent orders dated 5/6/2024 and the order dated 12/6/2024, which have authorized the continuation of the CCL in the Observation Home which, according to us, is illegal, as the orders being without jurisdiction conferred on the Board.”

The court also added, “At this stage, we must, however, clarify that since the rehabilitation and reintegration of the child in the Society is a primary object of the Act of 2015 and because of the orders passed being in the Observation Home, if the CCL is referred to a Psychologist or undergoing therapies with the de-addiction centre, the same shall be continued with the CCL participating in these sessions on the given time and date, though he shall continue to remain in his home or any safe place, being on bail and the conditions imposed upon him by the order dated 19/5/2024 shall continue to govern him.”
“In addition, we also direct that the CCL shall continue to be under the supervision of the petitioner, his paternal aunt, who shall ensure the compliance of the necessary direction issued by the Board to assist him to be rehabilitated,” it stated.

On June 21, the Pune district court granted bail to Vishal Agarwal, the father of the accused teenager in the primary case where he was booked under Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. But, his 77-year-old grandfather is still in judicial custody for allegedly forcing the driver to take responsibility for the crime on behalf of his grandson.
