New Delhi:

A 35-year-old man who went missing under mysterious circumstances last week was found dead in Baljeet Nagar, police said.

According to police, the man, identified as Madhav Singh, was allegedly killed by a man and his wife with whom the deceased was in an extramarital affair.

The police said they have arrested the woman along with her two associates and started further investigation into the matter.

Singh, a resident of Gulshan Chowk in Anand Parbat here, worked as a labourer in a factory.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) M Harsha Vardhan said a missing complaint of Singh was lodged on March 27 at the Anand Parbat police station by one of his relatives.

“During the investigation and analysis of Singh’s phone, it was revealed that he was in contact with a woman named Jyoti, who had called him to her house in Punjabi Basti, Baljeet Nagar,” Vardhan said.

The officer said that further investigation raised strong suspicion about the involvement of Jyoti and her husband in Singh’s disappearance.

When the police visited Jyoti’s house, it was found locked and the items were scattered on the floor. The body of Singh was found buried in a sewage pit there.

Jyoti and her husband Lekhpal were arrested on Sunday.

During interrogation, the duo admitted that Singh was having an illicit affair with Jyoti, the DCP said.

They disclosed the involvement of one Surjit, a resident of Baljeet Nagar, and he was also arrested in connection with the case. They with Jyoti, the officer said.

The accused couple told the police that they called Singh to their house on March 25.

With the help of Surjit, they allegedly beat Singh up and disposed of the body, said the police officer.

Surjit has previous involvements in criminal cases of theft and assault.

Top Court Seeks Poll Body Reply On Petition For VVPAT Slips' Full Count

Top Court Seeks Poll Body Reply On Petition For VVPAT Slips' Complete Count

The top court issued the notice and tagged the VVPAT plea with pending matters on the issue.

New Delhi:

In a significant development, the Supreme Court on Monday sought responses from the Election Commission and the Centre on a plea seeking a complete count of VVPAT slips in polls as opposed to the current practice of verification of only five randomly selected EVMs through VVPAT paper slips.

The Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) is an independent vote verification system which permits an elector to see whether his vote was cast correctly.

The VVPAT generates a paper slip which can be viewed by the voter and the paper slip is kept in a sealed cover and can be opened in case of a dispute.

The top court, on April 8, 2019, had ordered the poll panel to increase the number of EVMs that undergo VVPAT physical verification from one to five per assembly segment in a parliamentary constituency.

A bench comprising justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta took note of the submissions of lawyers representing activist Arun Kumar Agrawal seeking a complete count of VVPAT slips in elections as opposed to the verification of only five randomly selected EVMs through VVPAT paper slips.

It issued notices to the Election Commission (EC) and the central government on the plea which may be listed for hearing on May 17.

Senior lawyer Gopal Sankaranarayanan and advocate Neha Rathi appeared for Agrawal.

The plea assailed the EC’s guideline that mandates that VVPAT verification shall be done sequentially, one after the other.

The plea said if simultaneous verification is done and more officers are deployed for counting in each assembly constituency, then complete VVPAT verification can be done in a matter of five-six hours.

The government has spent nearly Rs 5,000 crore on the purchase of nearly 24 lakh VVPATs but presently, VVPAT slips of only approximately 20,000 VVPATs are verified, it said.

Given that many questions are being raised by experts with regard to VVPATs and EVMs and the fact that a large number of discrepancies between EVM and VVPAT vote count have been reported in the past, it is imperative that all VVPAT slips are counted and a voter is given an opportunity to properly verify that his vote as cast in the ballot is also counted by allowing him to physically drop his/her VVPAT slip in the ballot box, the plea said.

The top court issued the notice and tagged it with pending matters on the issue.

Niagara Region Declares State Of Emergency Days Ahead Of Rare Total Solar Eclipse

The Niagara region will shut some facilities to keep traffic off the roads on April 8

Toronto:

Canada’s Niagara region has proactively declared a state of emergency ahead of a rare total solar eclipse on April 8 that is expected to gather massive crowds to areas in and around the region’s popular waterfalls.

The Niagara region said in a statement on Thursday that Regional Chair Jim Bradley had declared a state of emergency “out of an abundance of caution.”

“Declaring a state of emergency … strengthens the tools the region has at its disposal to safeguard the health and safety of residents and visitors and protect our critical infrastructure in any scenario that might arise,” a Niagara region press release said.

The dramatic waterfall, situated along the Canadian-U.S. border, is in the path of the eclipse, and many people are splurging on hotels and rentals in advance to experience the phenomenon at one of North America’s natural wonders.

The mayor of Ontario city of Niagara Falls Jim Diodati predicted “by far the biggest crowd that we’ve ever had” on the Canadian side for the eclipse. Diodati estimated that up to a million people will be there, compared with the 14 million who typically visit during an entire year.

The region will also be modifying some of its programs and services and closing some facilities to keep traffic off the roads on April 8.

In An Emotional Tribute, US Woman's Ashes Flown And Scattered In Space

In An Emotional Tribute, US Woman's Ashes Flown And Scattered In Space

Elizabeth Garcia was diagnosed with heart condition two years ago

Fueled by a lifelong passion for exploration, Elizabeth Garcia and her feline companion blasted off on a final adventure beyond our atmosphere. Though her earthly travels with her husband John spanned the globe, space remained the ultimate frontier for Mrs Garcia. Thanks to a pioneering service, the New York Post reports, Garcia’s dream became a reality even after her death.

Diagnosed with a heart condition and given only two years, she sadly died just eight weeks after celebrating her 70th birthday. “They enjoyed travelling and socialising,” Garcia’s sister, Jean, told Jam Press. “She was a very generous person helping family and friends without question. Her wish was for her ashes to be sent into space.”

In her quest to fulfil her final wish, Mrs Garcia discovered Aura Flights, a Sheffield company specializing in space memorials.

“It’s extra special doing the launch for someone you’ve spoken with so much – knowing how much she wanted to be scattered in space and being able to fulfil that for her really was a rewarding and heart-warming feeling,” Elle Lilley, the client care and liaison for the company, said.

Fulfilling her celestial wish, Garcia’s ashes embarked on their final journey in January 2023. A photograph accompanied her on this remarkable ascent, allowing loved ones to witness the moment via a live camera feed, as reported by the New York Post. The special vessel carrying her remains soared 100,000 feet above Earth, lifted by a specialized stratospheric balloon.

“It was emotional, but special, knowing this was exactly what Elizabeth wanted,” Jean said, adding, “She would have been elated with the outcome, as were we all.”

"Inalienable Part Of India": Minister Slams China Over Arunachal Claims

'Inalienable Part Of India': Kiren Rijiju Slams China Over Arunachal Claims

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said that China has been making baseless claims on Arunachal Pradesh.

New Delhi:

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the renaming of several areas in Arunachal Pradesh by China and said that the baseless claims made by China will not change the ground reality.

“I strongly condemn China’s illegally ‘standardised’ geographical names given to 30 places inside Arunachal Pradesh. China has been making all baseless claims but that’s not going to change the ground reality and the ‘historical facts’,” he said.

Taking to social media platform X, he wrote, “Arunachal Pradesh is an inalienable part of India, and the people of Arunachal Pradesh are supremely patriotic Indians by all standards & definitions.”

Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge condemned the renaming of several areas in Arunachal Pradesh by China on Monday and urged the Centre to reprimand the actions of China while calling Beijing’s action “ludicrous”.

Citing a media report that mentioned China’s renaming of several locations in Arunachal Pradesh, Congress chief Kharge said that when China resorts to such provocation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tries to seek refuge by creating a false narrative on Katchatheevu.

Notably, the decades-old territorial and fishing rights dispute around Katchatheevu Island is in the limelight ahead of polling in Tamil Nadu for Lok Sabha polls on April 19, with the BJP and the opposition engaged in a war of words over the issue.

PM Modi on Monday targeted the Congress party and DMK over the Katchatheevu island issue. He said that Congress “callously” gave away the island. He also alleged the ruling party of Tamil Nadu did “nothing” to safeguard the state’s interests.

“Eye-opening and startling! New facts reveal how Congress callously gave away #Katchatheevu. This has angered every Indian and reaffirmed in people’s minds–we can’t ever trust Congress! Weakening India’s unity, integrity and interests has been Congress’ way of working for 75 years and counting,” PM Modi said in a post on X on Sunday, referring to a media report.

11 Killed As Israel Strikes Iran Embassy In Syria

11 Killed As Israel Strikes Iran Embassy In Syria

The Iran Revolutionary Guards strongly condemned the attack in a statement.

Tehran:

Israeli air strikes destroyed the Iranian embassy’s consular annex in Damascus Monday, Syrian and Iranian officials said, with a top Revolutionary Guard commander among seven members the force said were killed, amid worsening regional tensions.

Israel said it would not comment on the reported attack, but Iranian officials vowed a stiff response with fears of even further violence between Israel and Iran’s allies triggered by the Gaza war.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps named Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi and another high-ranking officer, Brigadier General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, as among seven of its members killed.

Britain-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 11 people, including several Guards members, were killed when “Israeli missiles… destroyed the building of an annex to the Iranian embassy”.

The toll includes “eight Iranians, two Syrians and one Lebanese — all of them fighters, none of them civilians,” Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the Observatory with a network of sources in Syria, told AFP.

Iran’s ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, giving a lower toll, told Iranian state TV that “at least five people were killed in the attack which was carried out by F-35 fighter jets” which fired six missiles at the building.

AFP reporters saw the annex building had caved in, and emergency services were rushing to search for victims under the rubble as sirens wailed in the upscale Damascus district of Mazzeh.

Security personnel shielded the site where earth-moving equipment was brought in to clear the debris and remove charred vehicles from the road outside, watched by a crowd of onlookers.

Syria’s defence ministry said “the attack destroyed the entire building, killing and injuring everyone inside, and work is underway to recover the bodies and rescue the wounded from under the rubble”.

– Regional tensions –

Iranian state TV said Zahedi — a senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ foreign operations arm, the Quds Force — was among the dead.

The Observatory said Zahedi served as the leader of the Quds Force for Palestine, Syria and Lebanon, adding that he was killed along with his deputy, his aide, and the Quds force chief of staff for the same three countries.

Two other members of the Guards and two Iranian advisers were also killed in the strike, the Observatory said.

The targeted building is next to the Iranian embassy, the front of which is decorated with a large portrait of Qassem Soleimani, the architect of Iran’s military operations in the Middle East, killed in January 2020 in an American drone strike in Iraq.

The Damascus strikes were the fifth in a week to hit Syria, whose President Bashar al-Assad is supported by Iran, Israel’s long-time arch foe in the region.

Syria’s state news agency SANA had earlier reported that “our air defence systems confronted enemy targets in the vicinity of Damascus”.

Iran’s ambassador, Akbari, vowed the attack “will lead to our decisive response”, adding “the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate shows the reality of the Zionist entity which recognises no international laws and does all that is inhumane to achieve its goals”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian called for a “serious response by the international community”.

– ‘Heinous attack’ –

Only the gate of the building was left standing after the attack, with a sign mentioning “the consular section of the embassy of Iran”, an AFP journalist said.

Window panes in buildings within a 500-metre (550 yard) radius had been shattered, and many parked cars were damaged by the blast.

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad also denounced the attack after visiting the site, calling it a “heinous terrorist attack… killing a number of innocent people”, in a statement carried by SANA.

The Gaza war, which started with the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, has devastated the coastal territory and also seen Israel and Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah exchange near daily cross-border fire.

Israel has also struck targets in Syria, mostly army positions as well as those of Iran-backed combatants.

Hamas condemned “in the strongest terms” the attack which it called a “dangerous escalation.”

Moscow, a Damascus ally along with Tehran, blamed “the Israeli Air Force” for the “unacceptable attack against the Iranian consular mission in Syria.”

The Damascus strike came three days after the Observatory reported Israeli strikes that had killed 53 people in Syria, including 38 soldiers and seven members of Hezbollah.

It was the highest Syrian army toll in Israeli strikes since the Israel-Hamas war began, said the monitor.

“Syria and Lebanon have become one extended battleground from the Israeli perspective,” Riad Kahwaji, head of the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis, told AFP after the Friday strikes.

The bloodiest ever Gaza war erupted with the Palestinian militants’ unprecedented October 7 attack which resulted in about 1,160 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign, aimed at destroying Hamas, has killed at least 32,845 people, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza health ministry.

Indira Gandhi Imposed Emergency: Amit Shah Attacks 'Save Democracy' Rally

Indira Gandhi Imposed Emergency: Amit Shah Attacks 'Save Democracy' Rally

Amit Shah’s reaction came a day after INDIA bloc’s rally in Delhi (File)

Jodhpur:

Rahul Gandhi has no right to talk about democracy as his grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi put lakhs of people in jail and banned political parties during the Emergency, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Monday.

He hit back at INDIA bloc parties over their ‘Loktantra Bachao (save democracy)’ rally in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, saying, “No matter how many parties you gather, only Narendra Modi will return (as the Prime Minister).”

The one who commits corruption will be behind bars, the Home Minister asserted.

The people of the country are ready to make Narendra Modi the Prime Minister for the third time, he said, adding that India will become the third-largest economy in his next term.

Amit Shah’s reaction came a day after top INDIA bloc leaders urged people to defeat the BJP to save democracy and the Constitution and alleged that the Opposition has been deprived of a level-playing field in the Lok Sabha elections due to the government’s “dictatorial” actions.

In his address at the rally, Rahul Gandhi accused PM Modi of “match-fixing” in the Lok Sabha polls and warned that if the BJP wins the election this way and “changes” the Constitution, the whole country would be “finished”.

“They said ‘save democracy’. What happened to democracy? The people of the country are going to vote. Why are you talking about saving democracy? Because your leaders have gone to jail? If they commit scams worth Rs 12 lakh crore, will they not go to jail?” Amit Shah said.

“Rahul Baba, whoever indulges in corruption will be behind bars,” he said. “You have no right to talk about democracy. It was your grandmother who sent lakhs of people behind bars and banned political parties. So you have no moral right to talk about democracy”, he said.

“These are the people who indulge in appeasement politics. In the last five years, religious places were attacked at various places in Rajasthan and many people were killed,” he said.

The Congress was in power in Rajasthan before the 2023 state elections.

Amit Shah said justice will be done to all and there will be no appeasement under the BJP rule. “Rajasthan is going to follow this path.”

The BJP government in Rajasthan led by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has sent the paper leak case accused to jail, he said.

Talking about the Lok Sabha elections, he said the BJP has set the target to win more than 370 seats and over 400 along with the NDA partners. But this cannot be achieved by a leader because the BJP is a party that wins elections on the strength workers, he said.

Assailing the UPA government headed by Manmohan Singh, he said, “10 years ago there was a UPA government and Manmohan (Singh) and Sonia (Gandhi) had kept the country in darkness. In 2014, the people of the country made Narendra Modi the PM and he brought prosperity and security.”

Eighty crore beneficiaries of the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana are the PM’s “army”, he said.

India’s economy was ranked 11th during the UPA rule and PM Modi made it the world’s fifth largest, he said.

“Make Narendra Modi the PM for the third time and India will become the third largest economy. We worked to make India a manufacturing hub for the world. We did a lot of work in the infrastructure sector. A new university is being opened every week, UPI transactions worth Rs 16,000 crore are being done every day, 14 km of road is being built every day, tap connections are also being provided to a house every second,” he said.

Mr Shah said former PM Jawahar Lal Nehru made a mistake by imposing the provision of Article 370 and everyone believed that it could not be removed but the Modi government scrapped it.

He also highlighted the construction of the Ram temple and said that the Congress could not do this because of its appeasement politics.

“We changed 150-year-old laws, changed 100-year-old Parliament building,” he said.

Emphasising the steps taken for the security of the country, he said, “No one now dares to carry out bomb blasts in India.”

He said that in 2014, the BJP won all 25 seats in the state with a 55% vote share, and in 2019, it again won all the seats with a 61% vote share.

“This time we have to make a hat-trick by winning 25 seats with 70% of the votes,” he said.

The BJP’s fight is against dynastic politics and those who think of their sons, daughters, and nephews but not about the country’s youth, he said.

“Sonia Gandhi wants his son Rahul to become the PM. (Ashok) Gehlot wants his son to be the Chief Minister, Mamata (Banerjee) wants his nephew to be the Chief Minister, Lalu Yadav wants his son to be the Chief Minister, MK Stalin wants his son to be the Chief Minister, and Uddhav Thackeray wants his son to be the Chief Minister”, Mr Shah said.
