Reactions pour in after Israel’s deadly attack on Iran consulate in Syria

Many regional resistance groups and countries around the world have strongly condemned the Israeli regime’s earlier deadly attack on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus, calling it a recipe for further escalation.

The Monday attack resulted in the martyrdom of Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), his deputy, and five of their accompanying officers.

Iran’s Ambassador to Damascus Hossein Akbari confirmed that the attack had resulted in the martyrdom of seven people, but said the exact number of the martyrs was yet to be specified.

Reacting to the atrocity, the Gaza Strip-based Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas condemned the attack “in the strongest terms.” It called the attack “a flagrant violation of international law, an encroachment on the sovereignty of both Syria and Iran, and a dangerous Zionist escalation.”

The movement demanded that the United Nations Security Council take “effective” action to stop the regime’s aggression on the region, “which adds fuel to the fire and undermines international stability and security.”

The Islamic Jihad, Hamas’ fellow Gaza-based resistance group, called the attack “treacherous.”

“This cowardly Zionist attack is an attempt by the enemy to expand aggression and escape failure in Gaza,” it said, referring to the Israeli regime’s ongoing war on the Gaza Strip.

“We affirm that the enemy will continue to fail, and will be defeated on all fronts,” the movement concluded.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), the second-largest component of the Palestine Liberation Organization umbrella group, described the attack as “a significant escalation and organized state terrorism.”

“The Zionist entity is intent on dragging the region into significant escalation,” it said, but noted that this would “plunge its citizens into a bloodbath and disasters they cannot bear.”

Fatah al-Intifada, another Palestinian resistance movement, said the Israeli aggression would fail to undermine Tehran’s role and the role of the Axis of Resistance, “which will continue to support the Palestinian people and their resistance in occupied Palestine until Palestine is liberated from the filth of the Zionist enemy.”

Several countries, including Pakistan, Oman, and Russia, also denounced the Israeli aggression, with Moscow calling it “unacceptable.”

In Yemen, Ali al-Qahoum, a member of the popular resistance movement Ansarullah’s Political Bureau, said the aggression proved the extent of the Zionist entity’s persistence in committing crimes and violating the sovereignty of the Syrian state.

MS Dhoni, Aged 42, Reaches Sensational T20 Milestone With Cameo vs DC

Legendary Indian and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni on Sunday became the first Indian glovesman to score 7,000 runs in T20 cricket. The 42-year-old veteran accomplished this milestone against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). During the match, Dhoni was at his best. Coming at the end, CSK’s five-time IPL champion former captain smashed 37 in just 16 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes. His strike rate was 231.25.  The result did not matter to CSK fans, as they were happy to see their ‘Thala’ bat and punish pacer Anrich Nortje by smashing him for 20 runs in the last over.

As a designated wicketkeeper-batter, Dhoni has scored 7,036 runs. In 380 T20s, Dhoni has made 7,308 runs at an average of 38.06, with 28 half-centuries. His best score is 84*. His strike rate is 134.78.

The most runs by a designated wicketkeeper-batter is by South Africa’s Quinton De Kock, who has made 8,578 runs as a wicketkeeper-batter. Overall, including matches, Kock has scored 9,407 runs in 329 T20 matches, at an average of 32.10 and a strike rate of over 137, with six centuries and 59 fifties.

DC won the toss and opted to bat first. David Warner (52 in 35 balls, with five fours and three sixes) and a returning Prithvi Shaw (43 in 27 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes) started off well with a 93-run opening partnership. Following their dismissal, DC lost their direction for a while until Rishabh Pant (51 in 32 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes) scored some quick runs in the end to take the side to 191/5 in their 20 overs.

Matheesha Pathirana (3/31) was the pick of the bowlers for CSK.

In the run-chase of 192, Khaleel Ahmed (2/21) and Mukesh Kumar (3/21) troubled the CSK batters with their line and length and at one point, CSK was 75/3 in 10.2 overs. Useful knocks came from Ajinkya Rahane (45 in 30 balls, with five fours and two sixes), Daryl Mitchell (34 in 26 balls, with a four and two sixes) and MS Dhoni (37* in 16 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes), but DC secured a 20-run win, restricting the five-time champions to 171/6.

Khaleel got the ‘Player of the Match’ for his match-winning spell.

CSK is in the second spot with two wins and a loss, giving them four points. DC is in the seventh spot, with a win and two losses, giving them two points.

7 Revolutionary Guards Killed As Israel Strike Iran Embassy In Syria

11 Killed As Israel Strikes Iran Embassy In Syria

The Iran Revolutionary Guards strongly condemned the attack in a statement.

Tehran:

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said the death toll from an air strike on an Iranian embassy annex building in Damascus — widely blamed on Israel — had risen to 11 on MOnday.

“The death toll from the Israeli strikes on the Iranian embassy annex has risen to 11: eight Iranians, two Syrians and one Lebanese — all of them fighters, none of them civilians,” Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the British-based Observatory, told AFP.

The observeratory had previously said there were eight dead.

Israel said it would not comment on the reported attack, but Iranian officials vowed a stiff response with fears of even further violence between Israel and Iran’s allies triggered by the Gaza war.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps named Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi and another high-ranking officer, Brigadier General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, as among seven of its members killed.

Britain-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said eight people, including several Guards members, were killed when “Israeli missiles… destroyed the building of an annex to the Iranian embassy”.

Iran’s ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, giving a lower toll, told Iranian state TV that “at least five people were killed in the attack which was carried out by F-35 fighter jets” which fired six missiles at the building.

AFP reporters saw the annex building had caved in, and emergency services were rushing to search for victims under the rubble as sirens wailed in the upscale Damascus district of Mazzeh.

Security personnel shielded the site where earth-moving equipment was brought in to clear the debris and remove charred vehicles from the road outside, watched by a crowd of onlookers.

Syria’s defence ministry said “the attack destroyed the entire building, killing and injuring everyone inside, and work is underway to recover the bodies and rescue the wounded from under the rubble”.

Iranian state TV said Zahedi, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ foreign operations arm, the Quds Force, was among the dead.

The Observatory said Zahedi served as the leader of the Quds Force for Palestine, Syria and Lebanon, adding that he was killed along with his deputy, his aide, and the Quds force chief of staff for the same three countries.

Two other members of the Guards and two Iranian advisers were also killed in the strike, the Observatory said.

The targeted building is next to the Iranian embassy, the front of which is decorated with a large portrait of Qassem Soleimani, the architect of Iran’s military operations in the Middle East, killed in January 2020 in an American drone strike in Iraq.

The Damascus strikes were the fifth in a week to hit Syria, whose President Bashar al-Assad is supported by Iran, Israel’s long-time arch foe in the region.

Syria’s state news agency SANA had earlier reported that “our air defence systems confronted enemy targets in the vicinity of Damascus”.

Iran’s ambassador, Akbari, vowed the attack “will lead to our decisive response”, adding “the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate shows the reality of the Zionist entity which recognises no international laws and does all that is inhumane to achieve its goals”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian called for a “serious response by the international community”.

– ‘Heinous attack’ –

Only the gate of the building was left standing after the attack, with a sign mentioning “the consular section of the embassy of Iran”, an AFP journalist said.

Window panes in buildings within a 500-metre (yard) radius had been shattered, and many parked cars were damaged by the blast.

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad also denounced the attack after visiting the site.

“We strongly condemn this heinous terrorist attack that targeted the Iranian consulate building in Damascus killing a number of innocent people,” Mekdad said in a statement carried by SANA.

The Gaza war, which started with the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, has devastated the coastal territory and also seen Israel and Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah exchange near daily cross-border fire.

Israel has also struck targets in Syria, mostly army positions as well as those of Iran-backed combatants.

Hamas condemned “in the strongest terms” the attack which it called a “dangerous escalation.”

Moscow, a Damascus ally along with Tehran, blamed “the Israeli Air Force” for the “unacceptable attack against the Iranian consular mission in Syria.”

The Damascus strike came three days after the Observatory reported Israeli strikes that had killed 53 people in Syria, including 38 soldiers and seven members of Hezbollah.

It was the highest Syrian army toll in Israeli strikes since the Israel-Hamas war began, said the monitor.

“Syria and Lebanon have become one extended battleground from the Israeli perspective,” Riad Kahwaji, head of the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis, told AFP after the Friday strikes.

The bloodiest ever Gaza war erupted with the Palestinian militants’ unprecedented October 7 attack which resulted in about 1,160 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign, aimed at destroying Hamas, has killed at least 32,845 people, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza health ministry.

OpenAI Removes Sam Altman's Ownership Of Its Startup Fund

OpenAI Removes Sam Altman's Ownership Of Its Startup Fund

The OpenAI Startup Fund is investing $175 million raised from OpenAI partners (Representational)

OpenAI has changed the governance structure of its venture capital fund that backs AI startups, so its high-profile chief executive Sam Altman no longer owns or controls the fund, according to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The change, documented in the March 29 filing, came after Altman’s ownership of the OpenAI Startup Fund raised eyebrows for its unusual structure – while being marketed as similar to a corporate venture arm, Altman raised the fund from outside limited partners and he made investment decisions. OpenAI has said Altman does not have a financial interest in the fund despite the ownership.

Axios first reported on the ownership change on Monday. In a statement, a spokesperson for OpenAI said the fund’s initial general partner (GP) structure was a temporary arrangement, and “this change provides further clarity.”

The OpenAI Startup Fund is investing $175 million raised from OpenAI partners such as Microsoft, although OpenAI itself is not an investor.

Control of the fund has been moved over to Ian Hathaway, a partner at the fund since 2021, according to the filing. Altman will no longer be a general partner at the fund.

OpenAI said Hathaway has overseen the fund’s accelerator program and led investments in such companies as Harvey, Cursor and Ambience Healthcare.

Altman, a former president at startup accelerator Y Combinator, has previously drawn scrutiny on his sprawling investment interest outside OpenAI, from crypto startup Worldcoin to fusion company Helion Energy, as well as fundraising activities in the Middle East.

OpenAI said an independent investigation following Altman’s dramatic ouster of the company last November concluded he did no wrongdoing in terms of product safety or OpenAI’s finances.

Editorial: India as peacemaker

The proposed peace summit in Switzerland can be a good starting point to find a lasting solution and end the Ukraine war

Editorial: India as peacemaker

Representational Image

India has the required diplomatic heft to play a peacemaker role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. This was demonstrated once again during the recent engagements that New Delhi had with both the warning nations. There is a growing international recognition of New Delhi’s role as a peace advocate in the region. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba’s visit to India last week — the first since the Russian invasion of his country two years ago — was loaded with significance. His trip came close on the heels of a long telephonic conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last month. On the same day, Modi spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, signifying the strengthening of Indo-Russia ties since New Delhi began buying Russian goods that the West had spurned after the Ukraine war began. India can be a potential mediator due to its stand of not blaming any side and consistently insisting on dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward to resolve the conflict. It has refused to be caught in a binary choice. Of immediate interest to Kyiv is ensuring high-level Indian participation in the peace summit to be organised by Switzerland. Though the proposed peace meeting is faced with many obstacles, it can be a good starting point to find a lasting solution and end the war. For India, the Ukraine war has been posing a daunting diplomatic challenge as it needs to take a nuanced position to protect its national interests without succumbing to the pressures of the West.

New Delhi is acutely aware of the continuing need to have Russia as an all-weather friend despite its own growing strategic affinity with the United States. So far, India has been consistently rooting for a negotiated settlement of all disputes and immediate cessation of hostilities. It took a pragmatic approach throughout the conflict, purely guided by national interests. Overcoming the pressures from the Western nations, India continues to buy oil from Russia. And, the S-400 missile defence system supplies have continued. The Russian equipment, especially missile and nuclear technologies, forms the bedrock of India’s defence while the economic partnership with the West, particularly the United States, and its support against an increasingly belligerent China, are key to India’s future. Russia has been hit hard by Western sanctions over the war and relying on continued trade with India and China, including sales of oil and natural gas. The biggest limitation of the proposed peace meeting is that it excludes Russia. Zelenskyy’s peace plan, which makes it incumbent upon Russia to vacate all captured territory, will be unacceptable to Moscow. There is still no indication of whether other Global South majors will attend the summit. However, India’s participation seems certain and this should serve as a promising starting point to draw the curtain on the protracted war.
