‘US should be answerable’: FM after deadly Israeli attack on Iran consulate

Iran’s foreign minister says, as the Israeli regime’s biggest supporter, the United States should be “answerable” following an earlier deadly attack by Tel Aviv against the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in a post on X, formerly Twitter, in early Tuesday.

The Monday attack resulted in the martyrdom of Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), his deputy, and five of their accompanying officers. Iran’s Ambassador to Damascus Hossein Akbari confirmed that the attack had resulted in the martyrdom of seven people, but said the exact number of the martyrs was yet to be specified.

Amir-Abdollahian said Iran’s Foreign Ministry had summoned the chargé d’affaires of Switzerland, which represents Washington’s interests in Tehran, after the attack.

‘Important message’

“During the summoning, the dimensions of the Israeli regime’s terrorist attack and crime were explained, and the American administration’s responsibility underlined,” read the post by the Iranian top diplomat.

“An important message was relayed to the American administration as the Zionist regime’s supporter,” it noted. “The United States should be answerable.”

The US has historically acted as the regime’s biggest ally, providing it with billions of dollars in terms of military aid on an annual basis and shielding Tel Aviv against condemnatory and punitive measures at the United Nations by vetoing those measures.

Also on Monday, Amir-Abdollahian held a telephone conversation with Hissein Brahim Taha, secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, urging the body to issue an “appropriate reaction” to the Israeli atrocity.

For his part, the OIC chief vehemently condemned the attack, pointing to the regime’s crime-riddled history and condoling with the Iranian government and nation.

Many regional resistance groups and countries around the world have strongly condemned the aggression, calling it a recipe for further escalation.

North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile Into Sea Of Japan, Claims South Korea

Japan’s coast guard said the apparent missile had already fallen into the sea.

Seoul:

North Korea fired a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, the South Korean military’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Tuesday.

The launch comes less than two weeks after Pyongyang’s state media said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had overseen a successful test of a solid-fuel engine for a “new-type intermediate-range hypersonic missile”.

Japan also said it “appeared” North Korea had fired the missile, Kyodo news agency reported, adding that the country’s coastguard believed the missile had fallen.

Tuesday’s launch is the third ballistic missile test so far this year, after the solid-fuel one overseen by Kim in March and another tipped with a manoeuvrable hypersonic warhead in January.

The North claimed last year it had successfully tested its first solid-fuelled ICBM — the largest, longest-range category of ballistic missile — hailing it as a key breakthrough for the country’s nuclear counterattack capabilities.

Solid-fuel missiles do not need to be fuelled before launch, making them harder to find and destroy, as well as quicker to use.

So far this year, the nuclear-armed North has declared South Korea its “principal enemy”, jettisoned agencies dedicated to reunification and outreach, and threatened war over “even 0.001 mm” of territorial infringement.

Elephant Kills Man In Kerala, His Family To Receive Rs 10 Lakh Compensation

Kerala has witnessed a series of deaths of people due to the attack of wild elephants. (Representational)

Pathanamthitta:

A 53-year-old man was attacked and killed by a wild elephant when he tried to chase it away after it strayed into the surroundings of his house near the forest in Thulappally here on Monday, police said.

This is the fifth death reported in the conflict between humans and wild elephants in Kerala in the past three months.

Biju, a local auto driver, came out of his house with his wife Daisy after hearing the trumpets of an elephant outside. The animal grabbed him using its trunk and threw him to the ground twice, said Daisy, an eye witness.

The same elephant had strayed into the area and created trouble the other day, she claimed.

Recounting the incident, Daisy said that the animal was seen trying to uproot a coconut tree in the surrounding area and moved towards him quickly after trumpeting multiple times and added that she stepped back and moved inside her house.

“We went out together, hearing the sounds of the elephant near our home early in the morning. The first time, we came back home together. But he went to the road near the house again as the elephant was trumpeting,” Daisy told reporters here.

The teary-eyed woman said the animal rushed towards Biju suddenly and grabbed him by its trunk, throwing him to the ground twice.

It later ran away into the forest, she said.

“As there was no response, I went to the spot and saw him lying motionless on the floor,” Daisy added. A police team rushed to the spot and shifted Biju’s body to Kottayam Medical College.

Later in the day, Health Minister Veena George visited Biju’s house and consoled his family members. She assured them that the government would provide adequate compensation to the family as quickly as possible.

Local residents staged an intense protest in the area, demanding compensation for the victim’s family and a job for a family member as a permanent solution to address the loss they suffered due to the wild elephant attack.

In a discussion held between people’s representatives and district and forest officials, a compensation of Rs 10 lakh was decided to be handed over to the killed man’s family today itself.

Lok Sabha MP Anto Antony who participated in the meeting, later told reporters that as per the decision taken during the meeting, the district collector would recommend the government to grant Rs 50 lakh to the family as compensation.

“One of the family members of Biju will be given a temporary job at the forest office here immediately. The recommendation for a permanent job will be submitted to the government,” he said.

A decision was also taken to erect solar fencing and trenches in the fringe areas bordering the forest and a decision would be implemented at the earliest in this regard, the MP added.

Kerala has witnessed a series of deaths of people due to the attack of wild elephants in recent months.

A tribal woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant deep inside a forest area bordering Wayanad and Malappuram districts on March 28.

A forest watcher, 50-year-old Paul, was trampled to death by a wild elephant while he was on his way to work at Kuruva in Wayanad district on February 16.

A week before that, another Wayanad resident Aji (42), was trampled to death by a radio-collared elephant in Mananthavady in the district, triggering massive protests.

In January, an estate watcher, Lakshmanan (65) was killed by a wild tusker at Tholpetty, also in the same district.

In central Kerala’s Idukki district, which is also heavily forested and mountainous, a woman identified as Indira Ramakrishnan was killed in an elephant attack in the first week of March.

Prajeesh (36) was mauled by a tiger in December last year near a forest area in Vakeri in Wayanad.

The Kerala government has been seeking to amend the Wildlife (Protection) Act, citing challenges faced by the state in dealing with instances of wild animals encroaching into human settlements.

"If I Change Name Of Your House…": S Jaishankar's Swipe At China

'If I Change Name Of Your House...': S Jaishankar's Swipe At China Over Arunachal

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar took a swipe at China over the border dispute

Surat (Gujarat):

Taking a jibe at China over its claims on the state of Arunachal Pradesh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that changing names won’t have any effect and the northeastern state was, is and will always be India’s part.

Jaishankar was speaking at the Corporate Summit 2024, presented by the Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, on Monday.

“If today I change the name of your house, will it become mine? Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be a state of India. Changing names does not have an effect,” he said.

“Our army is deployed at the Line of Actual Control…,” EAM added.

Recently, China again came up with its claim over the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Terming the Indian State as “Zangan–an inherent part of China’s territory,” the Chinese Defence Ministry said that Beijing “never acknowledges and firmly opposes” the “so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India.”

Following this, India once again rejected the “absurd claims” and “baseless arguments” while asserting that the northeastern state is an “integral and inalienable part of India.”

The Ministry of External Affairs, in an official statement, noted that the people of Arunachal Pradesh will “continue to benefit” from India’s development programmes and infrastructure projects.

“We have noted the comments made by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Defence Ministry advancing absurd claims over the territory of the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh. Repeating baseless arguments in this regard does not lend such claims any validity,” said the official spokesperson of MEA, Randhir Jaiswal.

“Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India. Its people will continue to benefit from our development programmes and infrastructure projects,” the statement added.

China, which claims Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet, routinely objects to Indian leaders’ visits to the state to highlight its claims. Beijing has also named the area ‘Zangnan’.

I played my father Govardhan in Family Star, says Vijay Deverakonda

Hyderabad: Family Star, starring Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur, is set to hit theaters in a few days, on April 5. Parasuram, who delivered a blockbuster with Vijay titled Geetha Govindam in 2018, joined hands with the Rowdy Star again with another family subject. Dil Raju produced the film.

The recently released trailer of Family Star looks average without revealing much in detail about the story. There are moments, but as a whole, it was on a backstep somewhere. But at the same time, the trailer has all the ingredients of a beginner for summer family entertainers.

However, it has become normal to have some negativity around Vijay Deverakonda’s films during the releases in the last few years. Now, the same gets repeated with Family Star’s title. A few media personalities and other hatred in the public cornered Vijay Deverakonda for promoting a star tag for himself in the name of a film title. Vijay Deverakonda clears the rumors and gives clarity at a pre-release press meet today about the title.

“Family Star is a character in every family who is the most supportive, caring, and loveable guy who stands for the family in whatever situation. Family Star is a title for each of them, not me,” says Vijay Deverakonda.

Vijay also adds that his father Govardhan is the star of his family, and so he named his character Govardhan in the film on the acceptance of his director, as the lead role reflects the same character and responsibilities. Vijay also mentioned that the success of Family Star would be a huge gift to his father, Govardhan, who is going to celebrate his birthday on April 9. Meanwhile, Family Star is going to be released on April 5.

"Lagaan Ki Team": 5 Bangladesh Stars Run To Save Boundary, Trolled – Watch

The second Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is turning out to be a mine of hilarious videos. After a hilarious DRS call and a missed catch attempt by three players, another video from the match is going viral. This time five Bangladesh players chased behind one ball to save a boundary in the Sylhet Test leading to some hilarious reaction on social media. Some users compared it to a famous movie scene from the movie ‘Lagaan’ while others called hem clowns.

Asitha Fernando claimed 4-34 as Sri Lanka bowled out Bangladesh for 178 to take a massive 353-run lead in the first innings of the second Test in Chittagong on Monday. The visitors decided against enforcing a follow-on, but were left struggling with their batting in the second innings, reaching 102-6 at stumps on the third day to extend their lead to 455 runs.

Debutant pacer Hasan Mahmud gave Bangladesh something to smile about with 4-51, while fellow pacer Khaled Mahmud also troubled the Sri Lankan batsmen with 2-29.

But Angelo Mathews remained unbeaten on 39 alongside Prabath Jayasuriya, three not out, with the pair looking to extend Sri Lanka’s lead with the help of the tail-enders.

Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando and Prabath Jayasuriya earlier chipped in with two each as Sri Lanka claimed nine wickets in two sessions to leave the hosts flattened.

Zakir Hasan made the highest score for Bangladesh with 54, while Mominul Haque offered some resistance with 33.

Resuming on 55-1 with nightwatchman Taijul Islam, Zakir survived for more than an hour before Bangladesh lost their first wicket of the day. Sri Lanka ended Bangladesh’s dogged resistance when Vishwa Fernando, a left-arm quick, swung one in to uproot the leg stump of Zakir.

Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto looked edgy from the start and faced 11 balls before being dismissed by Jayasuriya for one.

Najmul departed after attempting an on-drive, which was caught at short midwicket by Dimuth Karunaratne.

Asitha Fernando brought Mominul’s resistance to an end before he bowled Khaled Ahmed for one to wrap up the innings. Vishwa Fernando bowled Taijul for 22 with another in-swinging delivery to reduce Bangladesh to 105-4.

Asitha Fernando trapped Shakib Al Hasan leg-before for 15 and then induced an edge from Liton Das (four) in the same over.

Bangladesh kept losing wickets in clusters. Shahadat Hossain (eight) was caught by Kamindu Mendis at slip off Kumara and Jayasuriya hit Mehidy Hasan (seven) in front.

Asitha Fernando brought Mominul’s resistance to an end before he bowled Khaled Ahmed for one to wrap up the innings.

Sri Lanka dominated Bangladesh in the first two days to amass 531, the highest Test total without any batsman scoring a century. Sri Lanka, who have never lost a Test series to Bangladesh, won the first Test in Sylhet by 328 runs.
