Telangana: Rogue elephant tramples to death another farmer

Kumram Bheem Asifabad: The rogue elephant found in the fields near Burepalli village, trampled another farmer to death early on Thursday morning. The second kill by the pachyderm in the last 24 hours, has esalated panic in surrounding villages and a visible tension enveloped the the entire Chitalamanepalli mandal.

The tusker attaked Karu Poshanna (55), who was watering paddy crop in his fields around 5 a.m. His death was instant, as was the case in earlier instance in the same village. The earlier victim was Alluri Shankar (50), who was also in fields when the elephant attacked him.

Panic-stricken villagers have appealed to Forest department officials to ensure that that the elephant is driven away from the farms into the forest to prevent further attacks.

Teams of officials from the Forest, Police and Revenue departments have fanned out into surrounding villages which are in the path of the pachyderm moving aimlessly. Villagers were asked to remain indoors till further instructions. The publicity was carried out extensively in all adjacent habitations over the movement of the tusker.

Official teams have proccured large number of crackers in the belief that bursting crackers could scare away the wild elephant.

Telangnaa Forest officials were told by their counterparts in neighbouring Maharashtra state that an elephant herd had entered Gadchiroli forest three days ago and this elephant got separated from the herd and strayed into Telangana forest areas after crossing River Pranahita.

In the earlier instane, the Government had announced a compensation Rs 10 lakh to the family of Alluri Shankar.

Pilots Flag Burnout As Vistara Hopes For End To Crisis By Weekend: Sources

Pilots Flag Burnout As Vistara Hopes For End To Crisis By Weekend: Sources

Vistara sources said only 24 flights were cancelled Wednesday compared to the 52 a day before

New Delhi:

Hours after Vistara hinted at a probable end to its crisis, saying the flight schedules are expected to normalise over the weekend, pilots have pointed to fatigue issues which could have direct safety ramifications. “Pilots are flying at the edge of their maximum flight duty limitations. This is causing major health issues and everyone falling sick frequently,” sources said.

Vistara saw a surge in flight cancellations as the airline struggled with a shortage of pilots. An increasing number of its pilots have called in sick, protesting a revised salary structure ahead of the full-service carrier’s merger with Tata-owned Air India.

Sources, however, denied “coordinating together and taking mass sick leave”.

“Everyone is just tired from flying. The new FDTL (Flight Duty Time Limitations) rules should have given us some relief but as expected that is also not happening,” they added.

Last week, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation or DGCA deferred the implementation of the revised flight duty norms for pilots that were to be effective from June 1. The revised norms have reportedly been deferred for some time to have wider consultations.

The new norms provide for more rest time for pilots and seek to alleviate pilot fatigue.

Top officials in the airline, including CEO Vinod Kannan and senior members of his management team, held a virtual town hall with striking pilots Wednesday evening where discussions were held on new contracts and rostering issues.

Company sources said the pilots had been promised a course correction to address concerns in the wake of the merger with Air India. This, sources said, will include improved growth potential once the merger is complete and better rostering of pilots, which is expected by May.

Flagging major health issues due to “flying at the limits of the maximum duty limitations”, the pilot sources said: “Everyone is falling sick frequently. Pilots are already exceeding their max sick leaves in a year and ending up in leave without pay”.

They also criticised the airline for “trusting software more than their pilots”. “Pilots have been complaining about fatigue to the management. Management relies on the Boeing Alertness Model (BAM) and says the flight is safe, so you should have nothing to complain about. They trust software more than their pilots,” he said.

Everyone is “angry at the new contract, but we all knew it was coming sooner or later,” they said.

Earlier, company sources said that almost 100 per cent of the pilots accepted the new contract. Pilots expressed no protest during the virtual town hall, they added.

The airline had said on Monday that it was forced to cut a number of flights due to the pilot shortage and was using some of its larger aircraft to “accommodate more passengers.”

Vistara sources said only 24 flights were cancelled Wednesday compared to the 52 a day before

Pilots have been complaining that their cost to company (CTC) had been reduced in the new contract, in which they are mandated to fly 40 hours as opposed to 70 hours earlier. Sources, however, said under the new structure pilots were incentivised to fly more, and could earn more than they did earlier.

The civil aviation ministry said yesterday it was monitoring the developments while the aviation regulator sought daily information on flight disruptions from Vistara.

Watch: Wildlife Official Fights Off Leopard With Stick In Kashmir Village

He manages to maintain a safe distance from the animal until he stoops to pick up a stick.

A wildlife department official bravely faced a leopard that was roaming through a village in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Wednesday. The official engaged with the leopard, which pounced on him, using only a stick before ultimately wrestling it into submission with his bare hands.

In a 50-second video, now circulating widely on social media, the man can be seen grappling with the leopard using only his bare hands while simultaneously attempting to capture it alive.

He manages to maintain a safe distance from the animal until he stoops to pick up a stick, then using it to try to overpower the leopard.

Suddenly, the leopard pounces on him, seizing his hand in its mouth even as he continues to struggle against the powerful creature. Fortunately, locals and other wildlife officials present at the scene rushed to his aid, striking the leopard with sticks from behind.

Eventually, the man succeeds in freeing his hand from the leopard’s grip and subduing it. With the assistance of locals, the wild cat is captured alive and tranquilized.

The incident unfolded in Ganderbal’s Fatehpora village after residents noticed the leopard roaming freely in the area. Promptly, they notified wildlife officials who swiftly launched a large-scale operation to rescue the animal.

During the rescue mission, the leopard attacked and injured five individuals, including two women and three wildlife officials. Reports indicate that the injured were promptly taken to a nearby healthcare facility for treatment.

Iraqi Resistance strikes key Israeli airbase, Ashdod with drones

File photo of Iraqi resistance forces

Iraqi resistance forces have targeted a key Israeli airbase as well as the city of Ashdod in the central part of the occupied territories in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, who are enduring a genocidal Israeli war.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of anti-terror fighters, announced carrying out the attacks on Wednesday.

The first strike saw the forces using drones to hit the Ramat David Airbase — the Israeli regime’s northernmost such outpost that houses warplanes and gunships.

The resistance noted that the attack had come “in support of our people in Gaza, and in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity against Palestinian civilians including children, women, and the elderly.”

The Iraqi forces hit a “vital target” in Ashdod during the second attack, which was similarly conducted using unmanned aerial vehicles.

According to the resistance, the latter attack was part of “the second phase” of its pro-Palestinian operations against the Israeli regime.

The regime began the war on October 7 after Gaza’s resistance groups carried out a retaliatory operation against the usurping entity.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed around 33,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.

Iraq’s Islamic Resistance has been conducting numerous operations against targets lying throughout the occupied territories ever since the onset of the warfare.

Earlier on Wednesday, it struck the Haifa Airport in the northwestern part of the territories, asserting that it would continue to “destroy the enemy’s strongholds.”

'Unfriendly': Russia After Sanctions By South Korea

Ties between Moscow and Pyongyang have strengthened recently. (File)

Russia considers South Korea’s decision to impose sanctions against Russian individuals and entities as an “unfriendly” move and will respond in due course, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

South Korea has imposed sanctions against two Russian vessels which it says were carrying military cargo to North Korea. Seoul said on Tuesday it had also sanctioned two Russian organisations and two Russian citizens linked to Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programmes.

“This is an unfriendly move by Seoul and is deeply regrettable. The imposition of – I emphasise – illegitimate sanctions will have a negative impact on relations with Russia,” Zakharova told reporters at her weekly briefing.

“Russia is developing good neighbourly ties with friendly North Korea in accordance with the norms of international law, without harming the national security of (South Korea),” she added.

Ties between Moscow and Pyongyang have strengthened following North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s visit to Russia’s far east last year.

Last week Russia vetoed the annual renewal of a panel of experts monitoring enforcement of United Nations sanctions against North Korea over its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

The move came amid US-led accusations that North Korea has transferred weapons to Russia for use in its war in Ukraine. Both Moscow and Pyongyang have denied the accusations, but vowed last year to deepen military relations.

Zakharova on Wednesday reiterated that Moscow remained committed to U.N. Security Council resolutions on North Korea “in their entirety” but added that sanctions on Pyongyang were not working as intended.

“It is clearly seen that endless sanctions are completely useless for achieving the designated goals. They lead to a financial and economic blockade of an entire state with all the ensuing consequences for the population,” she said.

Zakharova accused the United States of seeking to foment “instability” on the Korean peninsula.

“South Korea apparently lacks the immunity to protect itself from Washington’s external influence,” she added.

Centre Dismisses Report Claiming New Sainik Schools Allocated To BJP, RSS

Centre Dismisses Report Claiming New Sainik Schools Allocated To BJP, RSS

The ministry said over 500 applications have been received and scrutinised.

New Delhi:

The defence ministry on Wednesday trashed reports which claimed that the new Sainik Schools were allocated to institutions based on their political or ideological affiliations.

Online media platform ‘The Reporters’ Collective’ in a report claimed that the government handed over 62 per cent of the new Sainik Schools to people associated with Sangh Parivar, politicians from the BJP and its allies.

“Articles have appeared in certain sections of the press insinuating that new Sainik Schools are being allocated to institutions based on their political or ideological affiliations. Such insinuations are unfounded,” the defence ministry said in a statement.

It said a rigorous selection process was followed to finalise institutions to run the new Sainik Schools.

“The scheme for new Sainik Schools is well thought out. The selection process itself is rigorous, checks and balances have been built in to ensure continuing adherence to the objectives and strong incentives are in place to provide financial support to deserving students,” the ministry said.

“The political or ideological affiliation or otherwise of the applicant institution does not influence the selection process,” it said.

“Attempts to politicise or distort the objectives and implementation of the scheme by casting aspersions on it, are unwarranted and misleading,” the ministry added.

In the first phase, the government has initiated the scheme of setting up 100 new Sainik Schools across the country, in partnership with NGOs, state governments and private sector which are working in the education sector.

The ministry said over 500 applications have been received and scrutinised.

“As on date, approval has been accorded to 45 schools. This includes both existing schools and schools proposed to be built,” it said.

“Approval to these schools is given provisionally. Continuation of approval is based on annual inspection by the school inspection committee. Hence, the scheme provides for a continued adherence to achieving the identified standards,” it said.

In October 2021, the Union Cabinet approved the affiliation of 100 schools in government and private sectors with Sainik School Society under the Ministry of Defence.

The ministry said a strict evaluation process was followed to scrutinise the applicants.

Explaining the process, it said a school evaluation committee composed of the concerned district magistrate as chairperson and principals of nearby existing Sainik Schools/ Navodaya Vidyalayas was set up.

“Physical inspection of the applicant school and verification of the credentials is done as per laid down criteria,” it said.

“An Approval Committee which comprises the Joint Secretary (Sainik Schools Society) as chairperson, Secretary CBSE and an eminent educationist as members accord the final recommendations,” the ministry said.

DCP (West) Amit Budhania said the accused Kshitij Sharma has been arrested and is being interrogated.

The incident took place outside the accused’s house in Rajni Bihar Colony here while his father Prashant Sharma, an inspector in Rajasthan Police, was inside the home, the DCP said.

The incident took place outside the inspector’s house on Tuesday night when Kshitij got into an argument with Mohan Lal Sindhi (35) who was crossing through the area.

As the argument escalated, Kshitij allegedly went inside the house to bring a bat and used it to repeated hit Sindhi’s head, eventually leading to his death, the police said citing a CCTV video of the incident.

Meanwhile, Kshitij’s father came out of the house upon hearing some noise and found Sindhi lying unconscious on the road, they said.

They took the victim to a nearby hospital where the victim was declared brought dead, Mr Budhania said.

A case was filed against Kshitij under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and he was arrested, he said.

New Delhi:

Byju Raveendran’s net worth a year ago was Rs 17,545 crore ($2.1 billion) and he featured in several prestigious ‘globe’s richest’ lists. However, according to the recently released Forbes Billionaire Index 2024, Mr Raveendran’s net worth has fallen to zero.

This sharp decline comes in the wake of multiple crises that have rocked the once high-flying startup, marking a significant fall from grace for the poster child of India’s startup ecosystem.

Noting Byju’s fall from the list, Forbes said, “Only four people from last year’s list dropped off this time, including former edtech star Byju Raveendran, whose firm Byju’s was enveloped in multiple crises and its valuation was marked down by BlackRock to $1 billion, a fraction of its peak $22 billion valuation in 2022.”

Founded in 2011, Byju’s rapidly ascended to become India’s most valuable startup, boasting a peak valuation of $22 billion in 2022. Raveendran’s brainchild revolutionised the education sector with its innovative learning app, catering to students from primary school to MBA aspirants. However, recent financial disclosures and mounting controversies have dealt a severe blow to the company’s fortunes.

The company’s woes were laid bare when Byju’s posted its long-delayed results for the fiscal year ending March 2022, revealing a staggering net loss exceeding $1 billion. This dismal financial performance led to BlackRock, a major investor, slashing its valuation of Byju’s to a mere $1 billion, marking a precipitous decline from its peak valuation.

Byju Raveendran has faced intense criticism for the company’s declining fortunes. The company’s shareholders, including Prosus NV and Peak XV Partners, last month voted to oust Mr Raveendran as CEO, escalating a battle over the fate of the once high-flying online tutoring startup that is fighting to remain in business.

Byju’s foreign investment has also come under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate. Before the lookout circular against its founder, the ED issued showcause notices to Byju’s parent firm Think & Learn over alleged violations worth over Rs 9,362 crore under the Foreign Exchange Management Act.
