Protestors Seeking Hostages' Release Smear Paint In Israeli Parliament

Protestors Seeking Hostages' Release Smear Paint In Israeli Parliament

Qatar and Egypt have been trying to mediate a Gaza ceasefire

A group of Israelis demanding their government do more to free hostages held by Hamas in Gaza protested in parliament on Wednesday with some smearing paint on the partition between the visitors’ gallery and the plenum.

“Now! Now!” they chanted at lawmakers below, leaving the glass streaked with yellow – the colour of their campaign – as ushers bundled them out.

The protest followed three days of anti-government demonstrations in Jerusalem when thousands took to the streets calling for more action to free the hostages and new elections to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Of 253 people seized by Hamas during its cross-border rampage on Oct. 7 that triggered the Gaza war, 134 remain in captivity and incommunicado in the Palestinian enclave.

Israeli officials have declared at last 35 of them dead in absentia, and relatives and friends fear for the fate of the rest as the conflict drags on.

Qatar and Egypt have been trying to mediate a Gaza ceasefire that might secure the release of at least some of the hostages. But Hamas has demanded that any deal lead to an end to the war, while Israel insists it would resume the offensive to destroy the Palestinian Islamist group.

Rahul Gandhi's 20 Crore Assets: Land Shared With Priyanka, Gurugram Office

Rahul Gandhi's 20 Crore Assets: Land Shared With Priyanka, Gurugram Office

Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination for the Lok Sabha election in Wayanad yesterday

New Delhi:

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has assets worth Rs 20 crore, but owns no vehicle or residential flat, according to his affidavit to file nomination for the Lok Sabha election in Kerala’s Wayanad. Mr Gandhi has declared about Rs 9.24 crore in movable assets. This includes Rs 55,000 cash, Rs 26.25 lakh in bank deposits, Rs 4.33 crore in bonds and shares, Rs 3.81 crore in mutual funds, Rs 15.21 lakh in gold bonds and jewellery worth Rs 4.20 lakh.

The Congress leader owns immoveable assets worth Rs 11.15 crore. These include agricultural land in Delhi’s Mehrauli that he co-owns with sister and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Mr Gandhi also owns office space in Gurugram, currently valued at over Rs 9 crore. While the agricultural land has been mentioned as inherited property, the office space is not.

Mr Gandhi has also detailed in the affidavit the police cases he faces. These include a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) for allegedly disclosing the identity of family members of a rape victim in a social media post.

He has said that as per directions of Delhi High Court, the FIR is in a sealed cover. “I am, therefore, not aware of the details of the FIR. I am also not aware of whether I am arraigned as an accused in the FIR. I am, however, disclosing its existence out of abundant caution,” he stated.

The other cases against Mr Gandhi include those filed on complaints of defamation by BJP leaders. He has also mentioned in his affidavit the criminal conspiracy case linked to Associated Journals Limited.

Mr Gandhi won the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in the 2019 general election. This time, he is up against CPI leader Annie Raja and state BJP chief K Surendran in the high-profile contest scheduled for April 26.

22 Leaders Quit Chirag Paswan's Party, Say Will Now Back INDIA Bloc

22 Leaders Quit Chirag Paswan's Party, Say Will Now Back INDIA Bloc

One of the leaders claimed Chirag Paswan “sold the tickets”.

Patna:

In an upheaval within the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), 22 party leaders have tendered their resignations simultaneously while expressing anger at not getting tickets for the Lok Sabha elections.

Among the notable figures who stepped down include former minister Renu Kushwaha, former MLA and national general secretary of LJP, Satish Kumar, state organisation minister Ravindra Singh, Ajay Kushwaha, Sanjay Singh and State General Secretary Rajesh Dangi.

The resignation wave appears to stem from grievances within the party ranks, with allegations surfacing about the distribution of tickets in exchange for money.

On her resignation from the party, former MP Renu Kushwaha said, “Ticket should be given to the party workers instead of people the from outside. Tickets were given to the outsiders which means that able people are not there in your party. Are we the labour class people in your party who will work for you, make you a leader? Our devotion was questioned when an outsider was given a ticket. We are not here to serve as labourers for the party.”

Miffed over not getting the ticket, former MLA and national general secretary of LJP Satish Kumar asserted that the rebel LJP leaders will now support the INDIA bloc.

“When such important elections are there in the country, the LJP Supremo has given tickets to such people that the party workers are stunned. The people who used to raise slogans ‘Hail Chirag Paswan’, day and night and hoped for a ‘new Bihar’ have been betrayed, their aspirations were crushed. Now, to save the country, INDI alliance has to be supported. Now we will support the INDI alliance,”

The party’s Organisation Secretary Ravindra Singh claimed that Chirag Paswan “sold the tickets”. “Chirag Paswan has played an emotional game with the people of Bihar. When he got five seats due to our hard work, he sold all those tickets. People of Bihar will give him an answer,” he said.

The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) is contesting five out of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar – Vaishali, Hajipur, Samastipur, Khagaria and Jamui.

Bihar will see polling in seven phases. The first phase will be held on April 19, the second phase on April 26, the third on May 7, fourth on May 13, fifth on May 20, sixth on May 25, and seventh on June 1.

Pentagon Working On Tech To Prevent AI Killing Machines From Turning Rogue

Pentagon Working On Technology To Prevent AI Killing Machines From Turning Rogue

Research investigates how visual ‘noise’ patches deceive AI, causing fatal misidentifications.

The Pentagon is working to address vulnerabilities in its AI systems that could be exploited by attackers using visual tricks or manipulated signals. Their research programme, Guaranteeing AI Robustness Against Deception (GARD), has been investigating these “adversarial attacks” since 2022.

Researchers have shown how seemingly harmless patterns can fool AI into misidentifying objects, potentially leading to disastrous consequences on the battlefield. For instance, an AI could mistake a bus with passengers for a tank if it were tagged with the right “visual noise.”

These concerns come amidst public anxieties about the Pentagon’s development of autonomous weapons. To address this, the Department of Defence recently updated its AI development rules, emphasising “responsible behaviour” and requiring approval for all deployed systems.

The modestly funded GARD programme has made progress in developing defences against such attacks. They’ve even provided some tools to the newly formed Defence Department’s Chief Digital and AI Office (CDAO).

However, some advocacy groups remain concerned. They worry that AI-powered weapons could misinterpret situations and attack without cause, even without someone deliberately manipulating signals. They argue that such weapons could lead to unintended escalations, especially in tense regions.

The Pentagon is actively modernising its arsenal with autonomous weapons, highlighting the urgency of addressing these vulnerabilities and ensuring the responsible development of this technology.

As per a statement by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the GARD researchers from Two Six Technologies, IBM, MITRE, University of Chicago, and Google Research generated the following virtual testbed, toolbox, benchmarking dataset, and training materials that are now available to broader research community:

  • The Armory virtual platform, available on GitHub, serves as a “testbed” for researchers in need of repeatable, scalable, and robust evaluations of adversarial defenses.
  • Adversarial Robustness Toolbox (ART) provides tools for developers and researchers to defend and evaluate their ML models and applications against a number of adversarial threats.
  • The Adversarial Patches Rearranged In COnText (APRICOT) dataset enables reproducible research on the real-world effectiveness of physical adversarial patch attacks on object detection systems.
  • The Google Research Self-Study repository contains “test dummies” that represent a common idea or approach to build defenses.

'Everyone Was Frightened': Teen Hero Recounts Moscow Concert Horror

At one point panic broke out, he said.

Moscow:

Teenage cloakroom attendant Artem Donskov helped people flee to safety when gunmen stormed a concert hall near Moscow last month. Now his mother is trying to get him to see a psychologist.

In an interview with Reuters, 14-year-old Artem said he and his colleagues helped people escape via a service corridor and directed them to the exits after the attackers sprayed concert-goers with gunfire and set the building ablaze.

At one point panic broke out, he said.

“As I understood it, some man yelled that the terrorists might be coming towards us and everyone was frightened. At first, some people ran into a dead end, then they ran outside, dropping their mobile phones and bags, and tried to escape as fast as they could.”

At least 144 people were killed in the March 22 attack, the deadliest in Russia for 20 years. Islamic State militants claimed responsibility but Russia says the attackers were linked to Ukraine, something Kyiv has repeatedly denied.

Artem’s mother Alexandra Donskova told Reuters that he and the family were emotionally exhausted. She said he was a shy boy and she was concerned about his mental health.

“Of course I would like him to have at least one session with a psychologist, because I can’t treat my own child. And I would like him to work through this situation,” she said.

“He isn’t agreeing to it at the moment, but maybe I will insist a little bit later.”

"I Think It Is Time For…": Pant's Blunt Warning After Humiliation vs KKR

We just didn’t turn up on the day, said Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant while asking his teammates to introspect following the side’s crushing 106-run defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL on Wednesday. Delhi Capitals bowlers had a forgettable outing as KKR batters toyed with them, pilling on 272/7. “Our bowlers were all over the place. We just didn’t turn up on the day. Today was one of those days,” Pant said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“As a batting unit, we only wanted to keep going hard as a team. I would rather get all out as a team than not go for the target,” he added.

Sunil Narine, who blazed away to 85 off 39 balls, got a life as Pant was late in calling for DRS on an outside edge by the West Indian early in the game.

“I think it was quite loud here. At the same time, couldn’t see the timer on the screen. There was some problem on the screen. But there are some things you can control, some things you can’t,” said Pant.

Axar Patel, the lone spinner in the DC team, bowled only one over that yielded 18 runs.

“See the thought process was that we didn’t want to use spinners but our fast bowlers were going through the motions. I think it is time for reflection as an individual. We need to learn from these mistakes and come out positive in the next match.”

Pant, who is coming off a long layoff, himself looked in fine touch as he scored his second consecutive fifty.

“Doing fine. Getting out there. Enjoying every day but cricket has its own ups and downs.”

Player of the Match Narine who notched his highest T20 score said he is looking to contribute with the bat.

“Cricket is all about batting so looking to contribute more as a batter. That said, I still enjoy by bowling.

On the team joke that he does not attend batting meetings, he said, “I have one role and the less I know the better it is for me.

“At the end of the day it is what the team needs. If they need me to bat, I will bat,” he added.

Winning captain Shreyas Iyer was lavish in his praise for Narine and young Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who both scored blazing half-centuries.

“As I said in the toss interview, Sunny is there to take on the bowlers, and if he cannot the rest of us should. That’s the plan.

“He (Raghuvanshi) was fearless from ball one. His work ethic is phenomenal. He analyses situations well. He is a smart batter, shots were pleasing to the eye.”

Chinese Scientist Who Gene-Edited Babies Is Back In Lab After Jail Time

Chinese Scientist Who Gene-Edited Babies Is Back In Lab After Jail Time

In 2019, a court in China sentenced Mr He to a three-year prison sentence

Chinese scientist He Jiankui, who was sentenced to three years in prison after revealing that he had created the first gene-edited children says he has returned to his laboratory to work on the treatment of Alzheimer’s and other genetic diseases.

Mr He told a Japanese newspaper that he had resumed research on human embryo genome editing, despite the controversy over the ethics of artificially rewriting genes. He told the Mainichi Shimbun, “We will use discarded human embryos and comply with both domestic and international rules,” adding that he had no plans to produce more genome-edited babies. Previously, he had used a tool known as Crispr-Cas9 to rewrite DNA in embryos.

In 2019, a court in China sentenced Mr He to a three-year in prison for breaching medical regulations. This followed his assertion in the preceding year that he had engineered genetically modified twin sisters, Lulu and Nana, before their birth.

His actions reverberated throughout the medical and scientific communities, eliciting widespread condemnation for proceeding with a risky, ethically contentious, and medically unjustifiable procedure without sufficient consent from the involved families.

The court determined that Mr He had falsified documents from an ethics review panel to enlist couples for his research.

Mr He allegedly utilized the gene-editing technique Crispr-Cas9 to alter the DNA in the embryos of the sisters, asserting that these modifications would confer immunity to HIV upon the children.

Mr He continued to defend his work saying he was “proud” of having created Lulu and Nana, The Guardian reported. Another girl was born through the same experiment in 2019.

He told the newspaper that he hoped to use genome editing in human embryos to develop treatments for rare genetic diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy and familial Alzheimer’s disease, at three laboratories he has opened since his release from jail in 2022.

He told the newspaper that the three children were perfectly healthy and had no problems with their growth. The twins, now aged 5, were attending kindergarten.

“The results of analysing [the children’s] entire gene sequences show that there were no modifications to the genes other than for the medical objective, providing evidence that genome editing was safe,” he told the Mainichi. “I’m proud to have helped families who wanted healthy children.”

In 2018, Mr He had stunned the world by claiming to have created the world’s first genetically-edited babies. The professor, who was educated at Stanford in the US, said the DNA of the two girls named Lulu and Nana was modified using CRISPR, a technique which allows scientists to remove and replace a strand with pinpoint precision.

But Mr He’s actions were considered “foolish” and “dangerous” by experts and a Chinese court found him guilty for this experiment, sentencing him to three years in jail and imposing a fine of 1 million Yuan.

"Has Always Favoured Indian Success": Russia Lauds India's Space Sector

'Has Always Favoured Indian Success': Russia Lauds India's Space Sector

Russian Deputy Chief of Mission also highlight the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission.

New Delhi:

Russian Deputy Chief of Mission Roman Babushkin hailed India’s remarkable achievements in space exploration and underscored Russia’s unwavering support for its space endeavours.

On the 40th Anniversary of the spaceflight of the first Indian cosmonaut, Rakesh Sharma, aboard the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz T-11 in 1984, Babushkin emphasised the enduring partnership between Russia and India in the space sector.

Babushkin’s remarks also highlight the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission and the collaborative efforts in the Gaganyan project.

“Russia has always been favouring Indian success,” Babushkin told ANI, emphasising the historic collaboration symbolised by figures like Rakesh Sharma.

Notably, he commemorated the achievement of Rakesh Sharma, who etched his name in history as India’s first astronaut.

He lauded India’s independent space research programme, which not only benefits the nation but also extends assistance to other countries in satellite launches.

Speaking ahead of the 77th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Babushkin highlighted Russia’s unwavering support for India’s space endeavours, emphasising India’s significant milestones in the field.

From Chandrayaan-3’s recent triumph to the ambitious Gaganyan mission, Russia has played a pivotal role in nurturing India’s space capabilities, including training astronauts and aiding in spacecraft development.

“The space domain stands as a testament to our special and privileged strategic partnership,” he also said, addressing the gathering at the Russian embassy here on the occasion.

“Russia, as a pioneer in space exploration, has always favoured Indian success. Our engagements date back to 1975, when the Soviet Union helped launch Aryabhata, India’s first satellite. The second satellite, Bhaskara, was launched by the Soviet Union in 1979,” he added.

Mentioning India’s Chandrayaan Mission, he went on to say, “Now India, having developed its robust national space programme, by right enjoys the status of a space super-power, well-reputed, reliable and preferred global partner for space science and satellite launching. The successful Chandrayaan-3 project is a huge landmark.”

Speaking further on the India-Russia space collaboration, Babushkin underlined the ISRO and Roscosmos cooperation.

“Russia remains one of India’s leading partners. The Russian State Corporation ‘Roscosmos’ and ISRO are deeply involved in the implementation of the Indian Gaganyan mission by training astronauts, providing assistance in the development of manned spacecraft, supplying life-support and crew-escape systems, flight suits, couches, rate sensors, cooperating on thermal protection coatings, applied materials and space medicine capacity building,” the diplomat said.

“Our vibrant partnership includes space propulsion engineering, cryogen engine construction, satellite navigation, and establishing ground stations for receiving communication signals. We are exploring new tracks emanating from the prospects of wider involvement of the private sector and start-ups,” he added.

Babushkin further highlighted how India and Russia ‘closely coordinate’ at the dedicated multilateral platforms, first of all the UN and its Outer Space Committee. He also went on to underline how the month of April holds a reason to celebrate.

“We maintain in-depth dialogue to prevent arms races in outer space and promote the Russian initiative of non-placement of weapons in outer space. This is also part of our agenda in BRICS, including the agreement on the remote satellite constellation’, he said.

“We have many reasons to celebrate this month, including the 63rd anniversary of the first human space journey by the legend Yury Gagarin on April 12 as well as the 77th anniversary of the establishment of Russia-India diplomatic relations on April 13. More and the Russian presidency in the expanded BRICS. However, the theme of space and the historic importance of the great deed by Rakesh Sharma epitomising the spirit of our friendship deserves to be an undoubted background for our overall cooperation in 2024,” he added.

On Wednesday, the Russian Embassy and TASS News Agency jointly arranged a dedicated photo exhibition that included a unique archive of photographic materials, along with the screening of the documentary “How I Became a Cosmonaut.”

Rakesh Sharma went on to become the first Indian citizen to reach outer space when he flew aboard the Soviet rocket Soyuz T-11 launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome.

He spent 7 days, 21 hours and 40 minutes in space and took India to become the 14th nation to travel to outer space. Sharma’s work was mainly in the fields of biomedicine and remote sensing.

Sharma conducted several scientific studies and experiments, including remote sensing and biomedicine. The crew even held a conference with officials from space. When the then PM of India, Indira Gandhi, asked Sharma how India looked from outer space, Sharma said, “Saare Jahaan Se Achcha.
