Water Board to set up vertical water treatment plants in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: In a bid to avoid water woes in the western part of the city in the future, the Water Board will soon set up multiple vertical water treatment plants.

To be constructed on the conduit of Gandipet Lake, these facilities will treat excess water supplied from the Himayatsagar and Osmansagar reservoirs. Managing Director Sudarshan Reddy on Wednesday inspected the sites where these plants could potentially come up.

So far, three locations have been finalized — Gandipet, Kokapet, and Puppalaguda. Each of these vertical plants will be able to treat three MLD of water, adding nine MLD of fresh water supply in the area.

The demand for water tankers has increased because of the depleting underground water levels in areas within the ORR, he said, adding that additional filling stations will be arranged so that tankers could be made available round the clock.

Sidhu's Wife To Undergo "2nd Operation For Cancer", Messages Pour In

Navjot Singh Sidhu is one of the most well known voices in cricket commentary. He made a return to cricket commentary after a long gap with the IPL 2024 and his comments, spoken in his unique style, has been going viral. Known to be straight-talker, Sidhu articulates his thought like no other. From commenting on Virat Kohli to Mumbai Indians captaincy, Sidhu has been speaking on all thing IPL. On Thursday, Sidhu, however, shared a news on the personal front on X where he talked about his wife – Navjot Kaur Sidhu.

“Wife will be operated at the Dr Waryam Singh Hospital , Yamunanagar today … she will undergo her second operation for breast cancer !” he wrote on X.

Last year, Sidhu’s wrote the below post when his wife’s fifth chemotherapy session was on.

After the post on Thursday, messages poured in for the well-being of the couple.

Recently, Navjot Singh Sidhu, former India cricketer-turned-commentator, echoed the sentiments of thousands of Rohit Sharma fans as he asked what wrong did the Hitman do, to be removed as Mumbai’s skipper. While Rohit continues to lead the Indian national cricket team, it’s Hardik who captains his IPL franchise.

“Nobody can digest the fact that India’s hero, India’s captain, is not the captain of our franchise. ‘What wrong has he done?’ is what fans of the franchise would be thinking,” Navjot Sidhu said on Star Sports.

“But what does he have to do? There is nothing that succeeds like success. If he had won these two matches, there wouldn’t have been any noise,” he further added.

There were also rumours that Hardik would be elevated as India’s skipper, at least in the shortest format, and would lead the team in the T20 World Cup 2024. But, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah confirmed that Rohit would remain India’s skipper and captain the team in the showpiece event which starts in June this year.

Sidhu feels if the announcement from the BCCI had come earlier, Mumbai Indians might not have decided to replace him with Hardik as the franchise’s captain.

“If India would have announced earlier in October that Rohit Sharma would return as the India T20I captain in 2024, then the franchise might not have taken the call. Because they would have thought that how can India captain not be the captain of the franchise,” Navjot Singh Sidhu said.

As things stand, Hardik is the captain of Mumbai Indians while Rohit continues to lead the Indian team in all three formats.

Hyderabad: Sreenidi Deccan Football’s title hopes were dented following a 1-1 draw with relegated NEROCA Football Club in a Matchweek 22 I-League clash at the SSA stadium, Shillong on Thursday.

The Deccan Warriors created enough chances to win the game but last ditch defending and poor finishing let them down, leaving league leaders Mohammedan Sporting Club with a chance to clinch the title against Shillong Lajong on Saturday.

The first half saw a spirited display from NEROCA as they controlled the tempo and kept Sreenidi Deccan penned inside their own half for large periods. Sreenidi Deccan’s first chance came through Brandon Vanlalremdika as he headed Rilwan Hassan’s cross straight into NEROCA goalkeeper Jackson’s arms. Just before half time, Brazilian defender Eli Sabia headed Faysal Shayesteh’s free-kick onto the crossbar. More drama was in store as NEROCA defender Ronaldo Singh was shown a red card for deliberately handling the ball on the halfway line, reducing the hosts to 10 men.

A floodlight failure then prevented the restart for about 50 minutes and the second half saw Sreenidi Deccan take the initiative. Lalromawia and substitute Rosenberg Gabriel both had shots on target but Jackson stood firm in the NEROCA goal. It was the hosts who stunned the visitors on the counter-attack as they won a penalty which was converted by Rohit Meitei in the 70th minute. Sreenidi Deccan won a penalty of their own 10 minutes later and David Castaneda dispatched it.

'Shameless': Taiwan Slams China For Accepting Global Sympathy On Earthquake

Taiwan’s government has already thanked leaders around the world for their messages (File)

Taipei:

Taiwan on Thursday condemned China as “shameless” after Beijing’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations thanked the world for its concern about a strong earthquake on the island.

China claims democratically-governed Taiwan as its own territory and also claims the right to speak for it on the international stage, to the fury of Taipei given Beijing’s communist government has never ruled the island and has no say in how it chooses its leaders.

On Wednesday, after the 7.2 earthquake hit eastern Taiwan, killing 10 people, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the U.N., Geng Shuang, mentioned at a meeting about children’s rights that another speaker had brought up the quake in “China’s Taiwan”.

China is concerned about the damage and has expressed condolences to Taiwan and offered aid, he said, according to a transcript of his remarks carried on the Chinese mission to the U.N.’s website.

“We thank the international community for its expressions of sympathy and concern,” he added.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry expressed anger at the remarks.

The ministry “solemnly condemns China’s shameless use of the Taiwan earthquake to conduct cognitive operations internationally”, it said, using Taiwan’s normal term for what it views as Chinese psychological warfare.

This shows China has no goodwill towards Taiwan, the ministry added.

Taiwan’s government has already thanked governments and leaders around the world for their messages of concern and offers of support, including from the United States, the island’s most important international supporter despite the lack of diplomatic ties.

Milan:

Italian police said on Thursday they had arrested 22 people and seized assets from villas to Rolexes worth over 600 million euros ($652 million) as part of an investigation into alleged fraud tied to European Union and Italian funding schemes.

Finance police in Venice said they believe the group, which operated in various European countries, sought to defraud the European Union’s COVID pandemic recovery fund and generous home improvement schemes introduced by Italy.

Police said they seized flats, villas, Rolex watches, Cartier jewellery, gold, cryptocurrencies and luxury cars such as a Lamborgini and a Porsche, in addition to some 600 million euros worth of illegitimate tax credits for home improvements.

Three people were arrested in Slovakia, two in Austria and 17 across Italy, police said, with searches also carried out in Romania.

The investigation will heighten fears that both the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) and Italy’s own building schemes are proving a boon for fraudsters.

Italy has so far received almost 102 billion euros from the EU COVID recovery funds, with over 90 billion more expected by 2026.

Simultaneously, the government is paying out billions for the building schemes, including one which offered to pay homeowners 110% of the cost of energy-saving renovations and another which covered up to 90% of the cost of doing up facades.

Police said the suspects, who were not named, had devised “sophisticated fraud systems”, using a series of front companies to present fictitious projects and thereby win tradeable tax credits from the state.

Once the fraud was completed, the organisation set up a money laundering system, including using cloud servers located in non-cooperative countries and cryptoassets.

The Italian police said they had worked with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), which is responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes against the bloc’s financial interests.

In its annual report published in February, EPPO said that in 2023 it had 1,927 ongoing investigations, which together involved some 19.2 billion euros of suspected fraud.

Some 618 investigations were opened in Italy alone.
