Hyderabad: With the water levels in major reservoirs being significantly lower than last year and the groundwater sources fast depleting, the state is in for a severe drought-like situation that has already impacted its agriculture, water availability, and livelihoods. The situation is critical in over 200 mandals where in the ground water table registered a drop and as a fallout the drinking water issues have taken precedence over irrigation needs.

Peasant community has given up its hope on the standing crops in a withering stage. Giving in to the mounting pressure from the peasant bodies and the opposition parties, the government has tasked the department of disaster management to assess the situation.

In a way the exercise has got underway to identify the areas with acute scarcity conditions for drought declaration as part of measure to mitigate the impact of the water scarcity. It is in the process of gathering information on the rainfall situation since June 2023 and the condition of Yasangi crops.

Govt. for hiring private wells and borewells

The situation is so alarming at places that the, private bore wells and open wells are also being hired to augment the drinking water supply.

Rainfall deviation, prolonged dry spells, crop extent and yields, vegetation indices, soil moisture, water availability in rivers and reservoirs, ground water table are the basic and mandatory indicators taken into consideration for declaration of drought. So far as the crop extent is concerned, it is no way less than the normal.

This time we have crops in some 51 lakh acres against 55 lakh acres last year, according to officials. So far as the rainfall is concerned, despite a five per cent surplus in the current year so far, the state has faced a 56.7 per cent rainfall deficit from October 2023 to March 2024 . It received only 59.2 mm of rain as against expected 136. 9 mm.

Water storage in almost all the reservoirs in the Krishna basin and Godavari basin are touching the minimum draw down levels (MDDL). The ground water situation is also appalling with over 201 revenue mandals, accounting for nearly 33 per cent of the total area in State have experienced a big drop in the table. State is however yet to conduct on- ground sample surveys to determine the intensity of drought conditions.

As the first step in the direction of addressing the drinking water scarcity, the government has issued instructions to the administration in the districts to hire the irrigation wells where ever possible immediately after harvest of Yesangi and make use of them to augment the drinking water supply. The government had sanctioned some Rs 100 crore to address the water scarcity issues in all the districts so far.

The prevailing conditions in some of the districts was a grim reminder of the November 2015 when as many as 231 mandals were declared drought hit in the state. The state had requested for a financial assistance of Rs 1000 crore from the Centre to mitigate the situation. The previous government had responded with immediate relief measures supporting the affected communities. Timely response is crucial in drought relief.

Telangana’s first female football coach has her goal set

Masavena Vanitha, TS’ first female coach, trains aspiring players free of cost

Telangana’s first female football coach has her goal set

Masavena Vanitha, the State’s first female football coach, is on a mission to make a difference.

Hyderabad: Masavena Vanitha, the State’s first female football coach, who has carved a niche for herself, is on a mission to make a difference. An All-India Football Federation’s D licence football coach, Vanitha defied societal norms to pursue her passion for the sport and represented the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh in eight nationals.

The woman footballer, who has emerged as a trailblazer by shattering stereotypes, is now aiming to ensure Telangana’s rise in football. Her dream to keep producing talent from Telangana is fuelling her desire to make a significant impact. The woman coach is deeply involved in moulding young talent through coaching, that too free of cost.

“I aspire to see players from Telangana regularly play at the highest level, which is not the case currently. Therefore, I want to help the State’s football by identifying and nurturing footballers, especially female players from remote areas,” she says.

In recent years, her dedication has paid off as her students actively excelled in the Khelo India Women’s Football League. In the 2024 edition of the competition held in Gajwel, 10 young female footballers trained under Vanitha showcased their skills in the Under-13, 15 and 17 categories representing Care Football Academy, Nizamabad, and Deccan Dynamos, Hyderabad, in the league.

Born in a humble family in Bellampalli, Mancherial, Vanitha discovered the passion for sport in eighth standard at Zilla Parishad Girls High School. Losing father in a mine accident at a young age did not deter her, as she dared to nurture her football dreams.

“People questioned my decision to play football, which was really disheartening. In football, one should wear shorts and I was bombarded with questions on my dress code, which made me feel uncomfortable,” the football coach said.

Upon completing her diploma in football coaching from Netaji Subhas Eastern Centre, Kolkata, in the year 2020, she immediately started coaching and currently works as a football coach at Eklavya Model Residential High School, Kagaznagar, Asifabad. Every day, she trains approximately 50 young individuals at the school and a significant majority of them are girls.
Moreover, during the different summer camps held in May every year, she generously offers her expertise to guide and empower around 50 to 60 youths — all without charging them any fees.

"5 Crore Is New 1 Crore": X User Narrates Ordeal While Trying To Buy Land

'5 Crore Is The New 1 Crore': X User's Post On Finding Decent Flats In Metros Sparks Discussion

Buying a house or any sort of property is still a dream for many due to inflated prices. Highlighting this struggle, an X user took to the microblogging site to point out that finding a decent property has become significantly challenging in today’s time. Kalpit Veerwal, an IIT Bombay alumnus, narrated his ordeal while trying to purchase a plot of land. He remarked Rs 5 crore now equates to the value that Rs 1 crore held in the past.

“Five crore is the new one crore. Can’t even get a decent plot of land in one crore anymore (in metros, it’s not even a decent flat),” Mr Veerwal wrote on X.

Take a look below:

Mr Veeral’s post quickly went viral, garnering more than 120,000 views. His tweet sparked a discussion on the microblogging site. While some users weighed in with their own opinions, others shared their own experience while facing similar challenges.

“Honestly, everything depends on the locality. Investing 1cr in an area which is few kms away from the 5cr area is always wiser. Real estate in most of the metros are inflated left right and centre,” wrote one user.

“We have a lot of properties ranging from 40L to 10cr and even more. All depends on our expectations. Having high expectations will lead to more spend. And another key thing in reality is brand.. people with brand constructing houses little luxurious but with 50-70% high cost,” expressed another.

“Yeahh so true the rise is crazy from covid ka rate and if there are rate cuts it’ll increase more,” commented a user. “Yup, faced the same isssue when tried to buy some asset in India last year,” said another.

“20 years ago ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ show really meant something, for 1 crore back then you could get so much. A decent flat in a city like Noida will cost 1 crore now, don’t even want to think about Bengaluru and Mumbai,” shared one user.

“The more you have the more you need. The less you have the less you need. Seeing people struggling, salty and miserable at 1cr. Also seeing people living their heart out at 20 lakh,” commented another.

Finally, the performances of Qatar (34th, up 3) and Comoros (117th, up 4) are also worthy of mention as both teams are now currently in their highest-ever position in the ranking.

The top three nations in the world are world champions, Argentina followed by France and Belgium in third.

Hyderabad: As against the 4 million gallons per day (MGD) that was drawn from Hyderabad‘s twin reservoirs – Himayatsagar and Osmansagar last year, the Hyderabad Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is utilizing 24 MGD this year.

The increased withdrawal comes with dwindling water levels in other reservoirs and an increase in demand for drinking water.

Along with plans to further draw up to 40 MGD from these water sources during May, authorities are making emergency pumping arrangements at two other reservoirs which are soon expected to hit their dead storage levels. Pumping is said to begin from Nagarjuna Sagar and Yellampally on April 15 and May 1 respectively.

The Water Board is currently drawing water from Manjeera, Singur, Nagarjuna Sagar, and Yellampally along with the twin reservoirs. According to a press statement, the storage capacities in the Singur, Osmansagar, and Himayatsagar reservoirs are sufficient.

Explaining the increased demand, the water board states that the total drinking water supply provided on April 3 last year was 2,270 MLD. Whereas, this year on the same day it was 2,409.53 MLD indicating an increase of consumption by 139.53 MLD. To meet the growing demand, the Water Board is also increasing the supply from tankers.

Currently, there are 644 tankers in operation with more than 6,500 trips every day. A major chunk of tanker orders is coming from Manikonda, Gachibowli, Kondapur, Madhapur, Kukatpally, Jubilee Hills, and Banjara Hills areas.

Elephant attacks expose Telangana forest department’s poor preparedness

The State forest department did not anticipate the possibilities of elephants crossing the Pranahita river and entering the Telangana region.

Elephant attacks expose Telangana forest department’s poor preparedness

Hyderabad: The Telangana forest department’s lack of foresight and poor preparedness resulted in loss of two lives. The herd of nearly 70 to 75 elephants has been moving along the River Pranahita since last few weeks on the Maharashtra end.

However, the State forest department did not anticipate the possibilities of elephants crossing the river and entering the Telangana region.

This apart, the field staff in Kumram Bheem Asifabad is not equipped with night vision cameras, night drone and other equipment that could help them track the movement of wild animals more effectively.

There have been reports that the elephant had attacked a few people in Chattisghar in the past. Though, it is not confirmed whether it is the same elephant but it entered Gadchiroli forests in Maharashtra and crossed the River Pranahita to enter River Pranahita.

After the Wednesday and Thursday attacks, the forest department deployed a drone team, including night vision camera to track the elephant’s movement. This apart, a Hulla party (professionals used to chase away elephant by using traditional methods of carrying flaming torch and beating drums) is also being deployed from Maharashtra.

The six-member team was expected to arrive on Thursday night or early Friday. It would soon swing into action, said a senior official.

Further, the elephant is travelling back towards Maharashtra and 15 teams were tracking its movement. Elephants prefer to walk in the nights and they can easily cover 15 to 20 kms a night. At this rate, there was every possibility of the elephant to cross the River Pranahita by Friday night or Saturday, provided it was not disturbed by local villagers, the official said.

FIFA Rankings: Indian Football Team Drops Four Places To 121

The Indian football men’s team dropped four places to 121 in the latest FIFA rankings, its worst in recent years, following an embarrassing 1-2 defeat against Afghanistan in the second round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Guwahati last month. The Igor Stimac-coached side, which had broken into the top-100 last year, having won the Intercontinental Cup, the Tri-Nations tournament and the SAFF Championship, on March 26 suffered a shocking defeat at home to lowly-ranked Afghanistan to continue its poor run of late.

Even though the team registered a win against Kuwait in the World Cup qualifiers, its first away win in over two decades, the forgettable outing at the AFC Asian Cup 2023 in Qatar, where the side lost all its matches without scoring a single goal, saw it plummet 15 spots to 117th after the continental tournament.

India ended their Asian Cup campaign in January pointless and goal-less after losing to Australia (0-2), Uzbekistan (0-3) and Syria (0-1). It finished at the bottom of the four-team Group B.

Last month, the Blue Tigers were held to a goalless draw by Afghanistan in their first leg second round World Cup qualifiers in Abha, Saudi Arabia, and then lost the home fixture, prompting outrage from fans and calls for sacking of Stimac.

India’s worst ranking, though, is 173.

Before dropping 15 places to 117 in March, the Indian team was placed at 102nd in the FIFA rankings, issued on December 21, 2023.

Reigning world champions Argentina continue to top the chart followed by 2022 World Cup runners-up France, England, Belgium and Brazil.

Netherlands occupy the sixth place and they are followed by Portugal, Spain and Italy with Croatia completing the top 10.

Water, power supply take centre stage in LS poll discussions

Water, power supply take centre stage in LS poll discussions

Hyderabad: As Telangana braces for the Lok Sabha elections on May 13, the looming agrarian crisis due to lack of water and power supply, threatens to sway the political scenario in Telangana.

While the ruling Congress is struggling to address the issue, the main opposition BRS is going all guns blazing against the former over its inefficiency to resolve the pressing needs of people compared to the previous K Chandrashekhar Rao government.

With the agriculture department officials yet to quantify the losses suffered by farmers, the impact of this crisis on voters cannot be overstated.

Except for blaming the nature and holding the previous BRS government over the sinking of piers at Medigadda barrage of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, the Congress-led government could not initiate any concrete measures to address the water crisis before the election code came into force.

Similar situation prevails with regard to power crisis as power usage surged in proportion to rising mercury levels since March. However, the main opposition BRS seized upon the prevailing drought conditions as a strong weapon against the ruling party.

Spearheaded by former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, the BRS accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and the Congress of mismanaging water and power resources, attributing the drought not solely to natural causes, but also to failed Congress policies.

Chandrashekhar Rao’s assertive stance during his recent visit to Nalgonda, Suryapet and Jangaon districts caused a stir within the ruling party, prompting heated exchanges over responsibility for the crisis.

Further, the pumping of water from Kaleshwaram project using Gayatri and Nandi pumphouses have further strengthened the BRS chief’s narrative, kickstarting a fresh discussion among people including social media.

His scheduled visit to Karimnagar and Rajanna Siricilla districts on Friday, is expected to intensify the unrest among people further.

The active campaigning of BRS working president KT Rama Rao, former Minister T Harish Rao and other senior leaders over negligence of the State government especially Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has now pushed the ruling Congress into troubled waters as many Congress leaders facing not just physical heat due to summer, but also verbal heat from the voters questioning about the water and power crisis repeatedly.

The attempts of the Congress leaders including Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Ministers to counter the allegations and blame the previous BRS government appears to have only backfired.

With no tangible contingency measures initiated to mitigate the situation at the ground level, the water and power supply at the forefront of voters’ concerns.

The outcome of the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana hangs in the balance, contingent upon how effectively each party navigates the turbulent waters of public sentiment and effective policy implementation.
