Who Is Shashank Singh? PBKS Star Who Took Team To Win vs GT

The Gujarat Titans vs Punjab Kings IPL 2024 match was a thriller to the core. After Shubman Gill‘s 89* took Gujarat Titans to 199/4 in 20 overs, most the Punjab Kings top batters fell on low scores. But one man had some other idea – Shashank Singh. The domestic cricket star slammed 61* in 29 balls (4x6s, 6x4s) to take his team to a memorable win in the last over vs GT. In a team filled with stars like Shikhar Dhawan and Sam Curran, it was Shashank Singh who did the job for PBKS.

However, Shashank Singh’ auction selection lead to a lot of controversy. At the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction, Punjab Kings co-owners Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia looked confused after they won the bid for uncapped Indian Shashank Singh. It appeared that the IPL franchise did not intend to buy the player, but then the gavel had already fallen. IPL 2024 auctioneer Mallika Sagar also looked a little surprised as the PBKS management was seen going through the players auction list. However, PBKS decided to go ahead with the buy and even welcomed Shashank Singh to their team through a post on X.

Punjab Kings clarified that buying Shashank Singh was always in  their plans.

“Punjab Kings would like to clarify that Shashank Singh was always on our target list. The confusion was due to 2 players of the same name being on the list. We are delighted to have him onboard and see him contribute to our success,” Punjab Kings wrote in a post on X.

Shashank Singh was brought up in the accelerated phase of the auction, with PBKS and other franchises looking to buy some uncapped Indian players in the category of INR 20 lakh base price.

When Shashank’s name was brought up, Preity Zinta raised the paddle after discussing the player with her team. The player was quickly sold as no other franchise bid for him, and the hammer went down.

Shashank Singh has played 58 domestic T20, scoring 754 at a strike-rate of 137.34. The 32-year-old batting all-rounder plays for Chhattisgarh at the national level. He is journeyman of sorts in IPL. Earlier, he has been associated with three other IPL franchises – SunRisers Hyderabad, Delhi Daredevils (erstwhile) and Rajasthan Royals.

Washington:

US President Joe Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, three days after Israel launched an attack that killed seven World Central Kitchen aid workers in Gaza, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The White House has described Biden as outraged and heartbroken by the attack but the president has made no fundamental change in Washington’s steadfast support for Israel in its conflict against Hamas.

The call between the two leaders lasted less than 30 minutes, the White House official said.

A US official said before the phone call that Biden was likely to bring up the need for better protections for humanitarian workers and for an increase of food shipments into Gaza.

Celebrity chef Jose Andres told Reuters in an emotional interview on Wednesday that the Israeli attack had targeted his aid workers “systematically, car by car.”

Israel said on Thursday its investigation into the attack may take weeks. The country’s leaders have voiced sorrow over the incident and described it as a misidentification.

From amongst 11,000 persons who were surveyed to assess their stress levels, almost 80 percent of young adults (18-30 years) and seniors (>;65 years) reported significant stress levels.

'Don't Need UN To Tell Me...': S Jaishankar On Free And Fair Elections Remark

The minister said the UN official was asked a very loaded question.

Thiruvananthapuram:

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday dismissed a senior United Nations official’s recent remark on elections in India, saying that he does not need the global body to tell that the elections in the country should be “free and fair”.

His comments came in response to a query regarding a statement by a spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General that they “hope” that in India, people’s “political and civil rights” are protected and everyone is able to vote in a “free & fair” atmosphere.

Mr Jaishankar, who was here to campaign for his ministerial colleague and BJP candidate Rajeev Chandrasekhar in the Lok Sabha polls, also said that the UN official made the comment on the Indian elections last week in response to a “very loaded question” during a press briefing at the UN.

“I don’t need the United Nations to tell me our elections should be free and fair. I have the people of India. The people of India will ensure that elections are free and fair. So, don’t worry about it,” the minister told reporters during an interaction here.

Last week, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, was asked about the “political unrest” in India ahead of the upcoming national elections in the wake of the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the freezing of the opposition Congress’ bank accounts.

“What we very much hope that in India, as in any country that is having elections, that everyone’s rights are protected, including political and civil rights, and everyone is able to vote in an atmosphere that is free and fair,” Mr Dujarric had said.
