Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace successfully test fires Stage-2 of its Vikram-1 orbital rocket

Hyderabad: Skyroot Aerospace, the leading space technology company based in Hyderabad, has successfully test-fired Stage-2 of the Vikram-1 space launch vehicle, known as Kalam-250, at ISRO’s propulsion testbed in Sriharikota on Wednesday. This test marks a significant step towards India’s first private orbital rocket launch, following Skyroot’s suborbital space launch of the Vikram-S in November 2022.

The 85-second test recorded a peak sea-level thrust of 186 kilonewtons (kN), expected to translate to around 235kN in flight. Kalam-250 features a high-strength carbon composite rocket motor using solid fuel and an Ethylene-Propylene-Diene terpolymers (EPDM) thermal protection system (TPS). It includes a carbon ablative flex nozzle and electro-mechanical actuators for thrust vector control, crucial for achieving the desired trajectory during the rocket’s ascent.

Skyroot Stage 2 Static Test 4

The test also involved the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), contributing its proprietary head-mounted safe arm (HMSA) for safe rocket stage operation. The solid propellant for Kalam-250 was processed by Solar Industries at their Nagpur facility. Skyroot had previously successfully tested Kalam-100, the third stage of Vikram-1, in June 2021.

Stage-2 plays a critical role in propelling the launch vehicle from the atmospheric phase to the vacuum of outer space. Pawan Chandana, Co-Founder and CEO of Skyroot, emphasized the significance of this milestone for the Indian space industry, highlighting it as the largest propulsion system designed and manufactured by the Indian private sector and the first carbon-composite-built motor tested at ISRO.

“This is a significant milestone for the Indian space industry, marking the successful test of the largest propulsion system ever designed and manufactured by the Indian private sector so far, and the first carbon-composite-built motor tested at ISRO. All test parameters are within expected bounds, and this achievement takes us another step closer to the upcoming orbital launch of the Vikram-1 rocket,” he stated.

Naga Bharath Daka, Co-Founder and COO of Skyroot, noted the validation of the flex nozzle control system during firing as a crucial achievement in their journey towards the maiden orbital launch of Vikram-1 in 2024. Skyroot’s progress is attributed to the dedication of their team and the support from IN-SPACe and ISRO, with a focus on crossing further milestones in the coming months.

Records set in Sunrisers Hyderabad vs. Mumbai Indians IPL match

Despite a 31-run loss, MI’s clash with Sunrisers Hyderabad left fans with memorable records and thrilling entertainment.

Records set in Sunrisers Hyderabad vs. Mumbai Indians IPL match

Hyderabad:  The Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was a record-breaking one, in which records with bat and ball were broken left and right. The five-time champions, MI lost the match by 31 runs, but more than the result, it will be the records and pure entertainment that will stay with the fans.

Here is a look at all the records broken in the game:

The 277/3 by SRH on Wednesday is the highest-ever total in IPL history, outdoing the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) total of 263/5 in their 20 overs against Pune Warriors India back in 2013. In that match, Chris Gayle made 175* in 66 balls, with 13 fours and 17 sixes.

It is also the fourth-highest total in all of T20 cricket. The highest-ever peak touched in the format was by Nepal, who scored 314/3 against Mongolia in the Asian Games at Hangzhou last year.

The total aggregate of 523 runs, 277 by SRH and 246 by MI, also shattered the record for the highest aggregate of runs in a T20 game, overtaking the 517 runs made between South Africa and the West Indies last year. In the IPL, the previous highest run aggregate was 469 runs between CSK and RR in 2010.

During the run-chase of 278 runs, MI fought it out really well and made 246/5, which is the highest total while chasing in the IPL, overtaking Rajasthan Royals’ 226/6 against Punjab Kings from IPL 2020, when the Royals’ were chasing 224 runs to win and a magical knock from Rahul Tewatia of 53 in 31 runs with seven sixes, including five successive ones, saved RR from brink of a defeat.

This match saw a total of 38 sixes being hit, 18 by SRH and 20 by MI. This is the highest number of sixes hit in not only an IPL match, but a T20 match as well. It has overtaken the 37 sixes hit in a match between Balkh Legends and Kabul Zwanan in their Afghanistan Premier League (APL) match back in 2018.

However, despite all the six-hitting, the RCB’s record of 21 sixes, the highest in a single inning in the history of India’s cash-rich league, is left untouched.

A total of 69 boundaries were hit in the match. This includes 19 fours and 18 sixes by SRH and 12 fours and 20 sixes hit by MI. This is the joint-highest boundary count in a match in the 16-year-old history of the IPL. The same boundary count was witnessed in a match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) back in 2010.

During the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s innings, the Orange franchise reached 148/2 in their first 10 overs, the highest-ever total by a team after 10 overs in IPL history, outdoing MI’s 131/3 against SRH back in 2021. In the run-chase, MI almost shattered SRH’s new record, scoring 141/2 in their 10 overs.

In the SRH innings, South African U19 bowling sensation Kwena Maphanka was hit for 66 runs in his four overs and went wicketless, which is the worst figure by a bowler on his IPL debut. It is also the joint-third worst bowling figure in IPL history, with SRH’s Basil Thampi’s 0/70 against RCB back in 2018 still at the top of the charts.

Abhishek Sharma of SRH brought up his half-century in just 16 balls, smashing the fastest fifty for SRH in IPL history. Just minutes before his fifty, Travis Head had smashed an 18-ball fifty, which held this record for a few minutes.

During MI’s run chase, the franchise’s skipper, Hardik Pandya, completed his 100 sixes, becoming the third player in his franchise to achieve it, besides Kieron Pollard (223 sixes) and Rohit Sharma (210).

Coming to the match, Sunrisers Hyderabad was put to bat first by Mumbai Indians. MI got Mayank Agarwal (11) early. But fiery knocks came from Travis Head (62 in 24 balls, with nine fours and three sixes), Abhishek Sharma (63 in 23 balls with three fours and seven sixes) that powered SRH to 148/2 in their 10 overs. Abhishek-Head put on a 68-run partnership for the second wicket.

Following a brief 48-run stand between Abhishek and Aiden Markram (42* in 28 balls, with two fours and a six), Heinrich Klaasen (80* in 34 balls, with four boundaries and seven sixes) formed a 116-run stand in 54 balls to take SRH to 277/3 in their 20 overs, the highest-ever IPL total.

Gerald Coetzee (1/57), skipper Hardik Pandya (1/46) and Piyush Chawla (1/34) took wickets for MI. South African U19 star Kwena Maphanka was hit for 66 runs on his debut IPL game in his four overs.

Chasing 278, openers Rohit Sharma (26 in 12 balls, with a four and three sixes) and Ishan Kishan (34 in 13 balls, with two fours and three sixes) gave MI a fine start, racing to 56 in 3.2 overs.

After both openers were dismissed, Naman Dhir (30 in 14 balls, with two fours and two sixes) and Tilak Varma (64 in 34 balls, with two fours and six sixes) formed a 84-run stand, taking MI to 150 in 10.4 when Dhir was dismissed in an unbelievable counterattack.

Tilak kept fighting for MI along with skipper Hardik Pandya (24 in 20 balls, with a four and six), taking MI to 182/4 in 14.1 overs at the time of Tilak’s dismissal.

In the death overs, Tim David (42* in 22 balls, with two fours and three sixes) battled it out for MI along with Pandya and Romario Shepherd (15* in six balls, with two fours and a six). But MI had been controlled well by SRH bowlers and restricted to a commendable 246/5 in 20 overs, losing by 31 runs.

Skipper Pat Cummins (2/35) and Jaydev Unadkat (2/47) were the top bowlers for SRH. Shahbaz Ahmed also got a wicket.
Abhishek took home the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his fifty.

Why Is "Shaheed" An Issue For Facebook, Instagram? Meta Urged To Lift Ban

Why Is 'Shaheed' An Issue For Facebook, Instagram? Meta Urged To Lift Ban

The oversight board, monitoring content on Meta’s platforms, is calling on the company to relax its restrictions on the Arabic word “shaheed” meaning “martyr” in English. After serious review, the board concluded that Meta’s blanket ban on this word was overly broad and led to the unnecessary suppression of speech among millions of users of certain communities and regions.

The board recommended that Meta should only remove posts containing “shaheed” if they are connected to clear signs of violence or if they violate other Meta rules independently, reports Reuters.

Under the current policy, Meta removes instances of “shaheed” when referring to people who are deemed dangerous. However, the oversight board argued that this approach is overly broad and restricts freedom of expression and civic discourse. Co-chair Helle Thorning-Schmidt said that the word has linguistic complexity and diverse meanings beyond just “martyr” in English. The board recognized that while “shaheed” might sometimes glorify violent acts, it is also used in neutral contexts such as reporting, academic discussions, and human rights debates.

The board stated that Meta’s existing policies against inciting violence and support for designated terrorists and terror outfits are sufficient to address the risks associated with terrorist activity on its platforms. They urged Meta to reconsider its approach to moderation to prevent the removal of content that does not endorse terrorism or violence.

In response to these recommendations from the board, Meta is considering changes to its policy regarding the use of the word on its platforms. The board suggests that Meta should only remove content containing the term if the posts are associated with clear signs of violence, such as imagery of weapons, statements advocating violence, or references to attacks. Removal should also occur if the post violates other platform rules, such as glorifying terrorism.

This follows years of criticism directed at Meta’s management of content related to the Middle East. The criticism intensified during the Israel-Hamas hostilities in October, with rights groups accusing Meta of suppressing pro-Palestinian content on its platforms. The Meta oversight board said that recommendations made to the company regarding the word “shaheed” remained valid even during crises like the Gaza conflict.

Meta has confirmed that it will review the feedback and provide a response within 60 days, as per USA Today.

Stabbing attack in Illinois leaves 4 dead, 7 injured

A man went on a stabbing rampage in a residential neighborhood in Northern Illinois on Wednesday afternoon, killing four people and wounding seven in an attack that included a home invasion and involved multiple crime scenes, the authorities said.

Carla Redd, the police chief in Rockford, a city of about 150,000 some 80 miles northwest of Chicago, said at a news conference that a suspect had been taken into custody in the attack, the motive of which was unclear.

Three victims were killed at the scene, and a fourth died at a hospital, the authorities said. The seven wounded were taken to area hospitals, where their conditions ranged from critical to stable.

The police did not name the suspect but said he was a 22-year-old man. They noted that no one else was being sought in the attack. “We don’t believe there’s any other suspects that are on the run or at large at this particular time,” Chief Redd said at a news conference.

The victims who were killed include a 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, and two men, 49 and 22, the police said. A mail carrier was among those killed, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

"If Not As MP, Then As Son": Dropped By BJP, Varun Gandhi's Vow To Pilibhit

'If Not As MP, Then As Son': Dropped By BJP, Varun Gandhi's Vow To Pilibhit

Varun Gandhi is a two-time MP from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh (File).

New Delhi:

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Varun Gandhi – not picked to defend his Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit – has written to the people of his soon-to-be former constituency to say that “even though my tenure is coming to an end… my relationship (with you) cannot end till my last breath”.

Mr Gandhi also said he considered himself fortunate to have had the opportunity to “serve the great people of Pilibhit”, and that their “ideals, simplicity, and kindness… had a huge contribution in my upbringing and development”. “Being your representative has been the greatest honour of my life, and I have always championed your interests to the best of my ability,” the BJP leader said.

“If not as an MP then as a son, I am committed to serve you throughout my life and my doors will always remain open for you… as before. I came into politics to raise the voice of the common man, and today I seek your blessings to always continue doing this work, no matter the cost,” he said.

Varun Gandhi also touched an emotional note in his letter, recalling his introduction to Pilibhit – as a three-year-old boy visiting with his mother, Maneka Gandhi, in 1983.

“… I remember that three-year-old boy who came to Pilibhit for the first time in 1983, holding his mother’s finger. How could he know that one day this land would become his workplace, and the people here would become his family?”

varun gandhi letter to pilibhit

Outgoing BJP MP Varun Gandhi’s open letter to the people of UP’s Pilibhit.

“The relationship between Pilibhit and me is one of love and trust… which is far above any political multiplication. I was, am, and will be yours…” Mr Gandhi concluded.

Varun Gandhi is a two-time MP from Pilibhit, which has been a family affair since 1989, when it was won by his mother, Maneka Gandhi. A noted environmental activist and former Union Minister, Mrs Gandhi is a six-time winner of the seat, including back-to-back wins as an independent candidate.

In the 2019 election Mr Gandhi thumped Hemraj Verma of the Samajwadi Party by more than 2.55 lakh votes. This time around, though, the BJP has opted to ditch the Gandhi name entirely.

However, in recent years Mr Gandhi, 44, has been critical of his own party’s government and policies. In September last year, for example, he slammed the BJP over the import of cheetahsfrom Africa. The remarks came after nine cheetahs died in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park in just five months.

On X, he tagged a news report on more cheetahs being brought to India and said, “Importing cheetahs from Africa and allowing nine to die in a foreign land is… an appalling display of negligence.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party – bidding for a third consecutive term at the centre – has fielded former Congress leader Jitin Prasada from Pilibhit. He will contest against the Samajwadi Party’s Bhagwat Saran Gangwar, who will be the joint candidate of the INDIA opposition bloc.

It is unclear if Mr Gandhi will be fielded from any other seat in this election, or if he will even remain with the BJP now. He does, though, have an invitation from the ‘enemy’ – the Congress.

Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has offered a place in the party, claiming the BJP had nixed Mr Gandhi’s ticket because of his connection to the Gandhi family; he is Rahul Gandhi’s cousin.

“He should come here. We would be happy. He is an educated man. He has a clean image. BJP denied him a ticket because he is related to the Gandhi family. I think he should come (to Congress),” the Congress leader said.

UP is a key state in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election with 80 seats on offer. A clean sweep, or at least a strong showing, is essential if the BJP is to achieve its goal of 370+ seats on its own.

The opposition will consist of the Congress and the Samajwadi Party of former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav; the two have agreed a 17-63 split of the state’s seats.

UP will vote in each of the seven phases of the 2024 election, starting from April 19 and ending on June 1. The results will be declared on June 4.

Maryland: The bodies of two victims in the Key Bridge collapse were recovered from a truck in the wreckage of the collapsed structure, the Maryland state police confirmed on Thursday.

The remains of two people were recovered Wednesday from a red pickup submerged in the Patapsco River, a day after a massive container ship crashed into and collapsed Baltimore‘s Francis Scott Key Bridge, authorities said Wednesday evening.

Earlier in the day, federal authorities at a White House press briefing said that they are balancing efforts to recover the remains of those missing, assess and remove the bridge debris and relocate the ship–all before efforts to rebuild can even begin, The Washington Post reported.

Moreover, at least six people, part of a construction crew that was repairing potholes and masonry on the bridge, were presumed dead, however, two other workers were rescued.

National Transport Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said that the investigators boarded the ship to recover the data recorder — “which is essentially the black box,” and are developing a timeline of events, according to The Washington Post.
Notably, Governor Wes Moore has ordered the Maryland flag lowered to half-staff, effective immediately.
It will remain at half-staff until further notice.

Reportedly, this is done in honour of the victims who tragically lost their lives as a result of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Earlier on Wednesday, US President Joe Biden lauded the prompt action by personnel on board the cargo ship ‘Dali’, which struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, causing the bridge to plunge into the river below sending several people and vehicles into the water.

Shipping company Synergy Maritime Group, which managed the Singapore-flagged freight ship in a statement on Tuesday that the entire 22-member crew of the vessel are Indians.

Personnel on board the ship were able to alert the Maryland Department of Transportation that they had lost control of their vessel, prompting the local authorities to close the bridge to traffic before the catastrophic impact, a move which “undoubtedly” saved lives, President Biden on Wednesday said during his comments at the White House regarding the Baltimore bridge collapse.

Moreover, among those reported missing following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, US, are Mexican nationals, CNN reported, citing Rafael Laveaga, Chief of the Consular Section of Mexico’s Embassy in Washington.
