It has been a tough start to the IPL 2024 for Mumbai Indians with two defeats in their first two matches. The franchise was already in the news before the start of the competition following Hardik Pandya‘s sensational trade move from Gujarat Titans and the decision to replace Rohit Sharma with the all-rounder as the captain. The move has not worked out for them till now with a narrow loss against Gujarat Titans to begin proceedings and a heavy defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad where they conceded 277 runs in 20 overs. Hardik has been facing a lot of criticism from both fans as well as experts and his wife Natasa Stankovic was targeted by trolls on social media.

Meanwhile, after his side’s 31-run loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Wednesday, Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya sought to lift his side’s confidence and said “toughest soldiers will get the toughest test” in the tournament.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

In a video posted on MI’s social media handle, Hardik motivated his side after their second consecutive loss asked the squad to help each other in “worst or good” situations.

“Toughest soldiers get the toughest test; we are the toughest team in the competition, anyone who could have come close to where we reached as a batting group or just overall are us – let’s make sure we will help each other; worst or good, we will be together,” Hardik said.

Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar said that the match was very open, even though Mumbai conceded 277 runs. He added that Mumbai batted “well” in their inning.

“In the second half, in spite of scoring 277, 10 overs down the line, nobody knew who was a clear winner. The game was very much open. The target was very much achievable. That’s a clear-cut sign that we have batted really well. So, let’s stick together, tighter. There are going to be tougher moments, we will stick together as a group and pull it through,” Tendulkar said.

Ninja, World's Biggest Gaming Streamer, Diagnosed With Cancer At 32

Ninja, the professional video game player and most-followed Twitch streamer in the world, revealed he was diagnosed with skin cancer. The 32-year-old, who boasts 19 million Twitch followers, shared his diagnosis in a post on X on Tuesday.

“Alright, I’m still in a bit of shock but want to keep you all updated. A few weeks ago I went into a dermatologist for an annual skin/mole check that Jess proactively scheduled for me. There was a mole on the bottom of my foot that they wanted to remove just to be careful. It came back as melanoma, but they are optimistic that we caught it in the early stages,” the professional gamer, whose real name is Richard Tyler Blevins, wrote on X.

He continued, ”I had another dark spot appear near it, so today they biopsied that and removed a larger area around the melanoma with the hopes that under the microscope they will see clear non-melanoma edges and we will know we got it. I’m grateful to have hope in finding this early, but please take this as a PSA to get skin checkups.”

Twitch is a live streaming platform primarily focused on video games, but it also features streams covering various topics such as music, creative arts, cooking, and more.

Ninja first became a streamer in 2011 and played video games professionally. As per Fox News, the 32-year-old rose to fame in 2018, after he streamed on Twitch playing Fortnite with celebrities, such as rappers Drake and Travis Scott, and NFL player Juju Smith-Schuster. He left Twitch in 2019 for Microsoft’s short-lived streaming platform, Mixer. But he returned to Twitch in 2020 after Mixer shut down, NBC News reported. He’s earned millions of dollars through these platforms alongside international acclaim in streaming circles.

According to Mayo Clinic, Melanoma is a kind of skin cancer originating from melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin pigment. Melanoma typically starts on skin that’s often exposed to the sun. Most melanomas are caused by exposure to ultraviolet light. The treatment of melanoma varies based on the stage it’s in, the American Cancer Society says.

For Violence-Hit Manipur's Displaced Voters, Elections "Have No Meaning"

For Violence-Hit Manipur's Displaced Voters, Elections 'Have No Meaning'

Displaced after violence hit Manipur’s Churachandpur last year, Nganthoibi Mutum and her family have been living in a relief camp at Imphal uncertain of when they will return home. With the Lok Sabha polls a month away,  thousands of voters in the violence-hit state currently occupy relief camps and will be allowed to vote from there.

While the Inner Manipur seat will go to polls on April 19, the tribal reserved outer Manipur seat will see polling in two different phases – on April 19 and 26.

Displaced by the violence and disappointed by leaders, the victims of the violence say elections are the last thought on their minds as poll season approaches.

“We are all refugees here. Our minds are filled with worry about our uncertain future. We are in the middle of conflict so this is not the right time for us to be thinking about election. We don’t trust our leaders anymore. They have not done anything for us,” says Nganthoibi.

While special measures have been taken by the Election Commission to facilitate voting, the displaced voters remain uncertain about their choice.

“I think the government has not given our full rights yet. Even with special polling booths, we don’t have the same peace to choose our representatives. If we were at home, we would have been about the think about the elections” said Suresh.

“Our votes have almost no meaning now. We have been displaced for more than 10 months. There is no hope for us,” said Lulun, who was displaced from Churachandpur.

“We are suffering in relief camps. Our ration supply has been irregular. Casting votes have no meaning for us,” said Lamvah.

Those who have lost their homes forever say they don’t even have important identification documents like voter IDs.

Even as the violence has subsided over the last few months, holding elections for the two Lok Sabha seats in Manipur remains a major challenge for the Election Commission.

“Our work force has also been displaced. With limited human resources, the division of the polls in two phases ensures that we have enough people and better security” said PK Jha, Manipur’s Chief Electoral Officer

In 2019, BJP won the Meitei dominated Inner Manipur seat and it’s ally NPF won the tribal reserved outer Manipur seat. This time, the BJP wants to repeat the success but the task would not be easy with Congress and other opposition parties making the Manipur violence a key poll issue for them nationally.

Ethnic clashes between the Meitei and tribal Kuki communities in Manipur since May last year have resulted in the loss of over 200 lives. According to officials, over 25,000 people have been rescued by the security forces while around 50,000 are living in camps following the unrest.

"Spent Last 3 Days In Bed, Was On Painkillers": Riyan Parag

Architect of Rajasthan Royals’ win over Delhi Capitals, young batter Riyan Parag on Thursday revealed that he was not well for the last three days and had to take painkillers to recover in time for their IPL match. Considered a precocious talent, the 22-year-old from Assam finally came off age as he slammed a blistering 84 not out off 45 balls to set up a 12-run win for Rajasthan Royals against Delhi Capitals.

“I have worked very hard, the last 3 days I was in bed, I was on painkillers, I just got up today and I’m very happy,” said Parag, who was adjudged the Player of the Match, during the post-match presentation.

Despite his talent, Parag struggled to live up to the expectations and had underwhelming numbers to show in the last few seasons but his hard work paid off as he hit his highest IPL score to lift RR to 185 for 5.

“(Emotions) They are settled, mom is here, she has seen the struggle, the last 3-4 years,” he said. “I know what my opinion is about myself. That does not change regardless of whether I get a zero or not.”

He played as a finisher in the earlier editions but this time, the team management gave him an extended role at No. 4. Parag was also coming into the season after scoring loads of runs at the Deodhar trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali T20s.

“That’s a lot to do with the type of season as well, I had a great domestic season and that helps,” he said.

“Someone in the top four has to play the 20 overs, the wicket was keeping low and stopping, in the first game Sanju bhayya did it.”

Parag’s performance also impressed his captain Sanju Samson.

“Riyan Parag has been a big name in the last few years. Wherever I go, people ask me about him. There is something very special he can give to Indian cricket,” Samson said.

RR had a disastrous start as they were 36 for 3 in the eighth over but Parag slowly constructed his innings before accelerating in the end to lift them to a good total.

“The way we started, the first ten overs, we were like Rovman, be ready you might have to bat! The IPL is changing and we all have to be flexible,” Samson said.

RR’s decision to bring in Nandre Burger as an impact player, replacing Shimron Hetmyer also reaped dividends as the South African pacer struck twice in the fourth over.

“Earlier it was about 11 players, now it is about all 15 players. Me and Sanga had a lot of chat between 15th and 17th over before deciding the Impact Player. It’s all about gauging in which zone they are. You have to look at that and take your decision.

“I saw Sandy (Sandeep Sharma) was calm and Avesh (Khan) was also looking good, so I went with that,” he added referring to the brilliant death bowling by the two pacers.”

Talking about his strategy going into the final over, Avesh, who defended 17 runs in the final over, said: “My plan is always clear. One side was longer, so my plan was to bowl wide yorkers.

“I was giving myself five seconds and only thought about executing them. My focus is always on the execution and back my yorkers.

“Enjoying myself here because we have Sandeep, Boult, Burger, all of whom have different skills. Samson gives me freedom to execute and only steps in if he sees I am struggling.

“I try to improve myself everytime. In T20s I try to reinvent myself. I never think about selection and only practice what I want to bowl.”

Assam Has Vast Renewable Energy Potential, Needs Policy Overhaul: Experts

Assam Has Vast Renewable Energy Potential, Needs Policy Overhaul: Experts

iFOREST’s research indicates the need for accelerated RE capacity expansion.

New research released by the International Forum for Environment, Sustainability and Technology (iFOREST) sheds light on Assam’s renewable energy (RE) generation potential and the imperative for policy enhancement and institutional capacity building to facilitate large-scale RE expansion.

The research reports, titled ”Assam Renewable Energy Potential Reassessment: Focus of Solar, Wind and Biomass”, ”Enabling Renewable Energy Growth in Assam”, and ”Impact of ISTS Waiver on Economics of Solar Power Procurement in Assam”, were unveiled during a multi-stakeholder dialogue organized by iFOREST in Guwahati’s Hotel Vivanta on March 27, 2024.

According to the findings, Assam possesses a significantly higher RE generation potential than previously estimated by central government agencies. This potential is deemed sufficient to support a low-carbon pathway to meet the state’s escalating electricity demand. However, the research underscores the need for policy tightening and institutional capacity building to overcome existing limitations to growth.

Bibhu Bhuyan, Managing Director of Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL), highlighted the utility’s commitment to green growth, with plans to expand generation capacity to 2,000 MW by 2030, 92% of which will be from renewable sources.

However, iFOREST’s research indicates the need for accelerated RE capacity expansion. Assam’s electricity demand is projected to double by 2030, necessitating nearly 3,000 MW of RE capacity by 2026-27 and 5,000 MW by 2031-32 to meet renewable energy obligations (RPOs) and ensure energy security.

While the official assessment by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) estimates Assam’s RE potential at 14.4 GW, iFOREST’s reassessment suggests a significantly higher capacity. To fully harness this potential and stimulate RE investments, structural challenges limiting sector growth must be addressed.

Sam Bankman-Fried Jailed For 25 Years For FTX Fraud

Sam Bankman-Fried Jailed For 25 Years For FTX Fraud

Sam Bankman-Fried is expected to appeal his conviction. (File)

Disgraced cryptocurrency wunderkind Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in jail on Thursday following his conviction in one of the biggest financial fraud cases in history.

US prosecutors were seeking a prison term of 40-50 years after a New York jury found Sam Bankman-Fried, known by his initials SBF, guilty in November following a five-week trial that probed the one-time high roller’s spectacular fall.

During the hearing Sam Bankman-Fried told the courtroom that he was “sorry about what happened at every stage. And there are things I should’ve done and things I shouldn’t have.”

The final sentence was meted out by US District Judge Lewis Kaplan who used the hearing to carefully walk through the financial crimes committed by Sam Bankman-Fried.

With the sentencing now done, Sam Bankman-Fried is expected to appeal his conviction.

A New York jury found Sam Bankman-Fried guilty in November following the lengthy trial that probed his stunning downfall.

Calling Sam Bankman-Fried’s seven-count conviction reflective of the defendant’s “unmatched greed and hubris,” the government’s sentencing request argued for significant jail time in light of fraud it estimates at more than $10 billion.

Moreover, a lengthy sentence is necessary to “protect the public,” argued US Attorney Damian Williams, who characterized Sam Bankman-Fried as an “adept” spin doctor capable of additional malfeasance.

Calling the government’s proposed sentence “barbaric,” Sam Bankman-Fried’s attorneys depicted their client as a diligent young man motivated by philanthropy who got in over his head.

Their portrayal is similar to the one SBF’s defense presented at trial — which was quickly rejected by jurors after just five hours of deliberation.

Sam Bankman-Fried’s attorney’s had asked for six years in prison, a sentence “that returns Sam promptly to a productive role in society,” said attorneys led by Marc Mukasey.

FTX Implosion

A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a billionaire before the age of 30, Sam Bankman-Fried conquered the crypto world at breakneck speed, turning FTX, a small start-up he cofounded in 2019, into the world’s second largest exchange platform.

But in November 2022, the FTX empire imploded, unable to cope with massive withdrawal requests from customers panicked to learn that some of the funds stored at the company had been committed to risky operations at Sam Bankman-Fried’s personal hedge fund, Alameda Research.

During the trial, some of Sam Bankman-Fried’s closest associates said that he was key to all the decisions that saw $8 billion vanish from FTX.

This group included Caroline Ellison, the former Alameda CEO and Sam Bankman-Fried’s on-and-off-again girlfriend, who testified that Alameda had stolen “around $14 billion” from FTX clients and that Bankman-Fried “directed me to commit those crimes.”

Filings from the prosecution and defense offered starkly different takes on Sam Bankman-Fried, the son of two well regarded law professors at tony Stanford University.

“The lack of contrition is galling,” said Williams, who took issue with the image of Sam Bankman-Fried as “selfless” and “altruistic,” as championed by the defense, noting he used funds for “luxury” real estate, donations to rub shoulders with political leaders, a Super Bowl television ad and “access to celebrities.”

The defense’s statement describes Sam Bankman-Fried as “wracked” with remorse over the implosion of FTX.

Recovered funds

Sam Bankman-Fried’s attorneys also pointed to statements from FTX’s current leaders expressing confidence that FTX customers and creditors would get back their money, saying in the brief, that “the harm to customers, lenders and investors is zero.”

That argument drew a scathing response from FTX Trading Chief Executive John Ray, who said ongoing recoveries of ill-gotten gains do not make up for fraud.

“That things he stole… were successfully recovered through the efforts of a dedicated group” of professionals “does not mean the things were not stolen,” Ray said in a letter to the court.

“What it means is that we got some of them back.”

Swedish police arrest Iranian prisoner’s son: Daughter

former Iranian judiciary official Hamid Nouri

Sweden’s police have reportedly arrested the son of an Iranian prisoner, who has been sentenced to life in prison by Stockholm, based on complaints filed by notorious anti-Iran figures living in exile in the Nordic country.

“After [spending] hours with no information about my brother, who had gone to visit my father…, we realized that Majid has been apparently arrested by Sweden’s police,” Atieh Nouri, daughter of Hamid Nouri, said in a post on X on Friday.

“We still do not know anything about the details of the matter,” she added.

Nouri, a former Iranian judiciary official, was arrested in Sweden back in 2019.

He was put on trial on unfounded allegations levelled against him by elements representing the Mujahedin-e-Khalq Organization (MKO) terrorist cult that has openly boasted about carrying out deadly terrorist operations against thousands of Iranian officials and civilians.

Nouri was handed the life sentence three years later after being found guilty of murder and crimes against the international law over his alleged role in executions of criminals in Iran in 1988.

Sweden’s Appeal Court upheld the verdict in December 2023.

Earlier in March, Sweden’s Supreme Court also upheld the sentence, refusing to hear an appeal it had been submitted by the Iranian prisoner.

Iranian authorities say Nouri’s imprisonment and trial in Sweden is politically-motivated, noting that the case has been influenced by pressure and propaganda of anti-Iran groups and individuals living in the West.

Nouri, himself, has vehemently denied the charges brought against him in the case, calling them fabricated.
