Gaza children die of hunger as UN, international community fail: Hamas

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has blamed the United Nations and the international community for the death of 13 children in the Gaza Strip from hunger amid Israeli siege and aggression.

Palestinian medical sources said on Thursday that seven children died because of malnutrition, bringing to 13 the number of children who have lost their lives because of hunger in the northern part of the besieged strip.

The deaths are “a declaration of failure of the international community and the United Nations in carrying out their tasks in protecting children from starvation,” Hamas said in a statement on Friday.

The movement also described the deaths as a “dangerous precedent” in the modern era.

“We renew our call on the United Nations and international relief institutions to take urgent action to save children and civilians in the Gaza Strip, especially in the Gaza and North governorates, and not to submit to the dictates of the criminal Zionist occupation,” the statement said.

Hamas also called on the international community to help deliver food and medical supplies to Gaza urgently “to avoid the increasing catastrophe of famine.”

Israel launched the genocidal war on Gaza early in October. The Tel Aviv regime has also imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

Gaza health system ‘more than on its knees’: WHO

Amid the Israeli-imposed siege on Gaza, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the health system in the strip is “more than on its knees.”

“The system in Gaza is on its knees, it’s more than on its knees,” WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said on Friday, adding “All the lifelines in Gaza have more or less been cut.”

The spokesperson noted that desperate Palestinians risk their lives to find food, water and other necessities.

His remarks come as Israeli forces have repeatedly opened fire on Palestinians waiting for humanitarian aid in northern Gaza. The latest incident killed at least 112 people and injured hundreds of others near the al-Nabulsi roundabout in Gaza City on Thursday.

“The food supplies have been cut off deliberately. Let’s not forget that,” Lindmeier told reporters in Geneva.

On Tuesday, UN officials slammed Israel for “systematically” blocking aid from reaching Gazans, warning that at least one-quarter of the population of Gaza is one step away from famine.

Israel waged its genocidal war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed 30,228 Palestinians and injured 71,377 others.

Sri Lanka Awards Energy Deal To India, Scrapes Chinese Company's Tender

China and India have been competing for major infrastructure projects in Sri Lanka (Representational)

Sri Lanka on Friday awarded the construction of three solar and wind hybrid power generation facilities to an Indian company after scrapping a tender won by a Chinese firm.

India has long been concerned about growing Chinese influence in the island nation, which sits near key global shipping lanes and which India considers to be within its sphere of influence.

The project, initially financed by an Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan, was temporarily shelved two years ago after India raised concerns over China’s involvement.

Sri Lanka’s energy ministry said Friday that the project had been revived and was now fully funded by an $11 million Indian government grant.

It added that renewables firm U-Solar from Bengaluru had been awarded the building contract.

India’s assistance “underscored the significance New Delhi attached to bilateral energy partnership”, the Indian embassy said in a statement.

The three facilities will have a combined 2,230 kilowatts of renewable energy capacity and be located on islets near the northern city of Jaffna, not far from India’s southern coast.

China and India have been competing for major infrastructure projects in Sri Lanka, which is currently emerging from its worst economic crisis since independence from Britain in 1948.

Beijing is also Sri Lanka’s single largest bilateral creditor, accounting for around 10 percent of the island nation’s $46 billion foreign debt at the time of a government default at the peak of the crisis in 2022.

Telangana: Sons grant mother’s wish, celebrate 50th wedding anniversary in her memory

Sangareddy: The children of a woman, whose wish was to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary grandly with relatives and friends, fulfilled her wish though she passed away last year. The children celebrated the occasion on Friday conducting the rituals by placing a bust of their mother near their father at Gummadidala.

Chennamsetti Nagalakshmi (67), a resident of Gummadidala, died of lung disease on February 5 last year, days before her 49th marriage anniversary. According to the children, she always used to share with her five sons, daughter-in-laws and grandchildren that she wanted to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary in a grand manner.

While the family is slowly recuperating from the loss, the children recalled their mother’s last wish and approached an artist from Guntur to prepare her bust. On Friday, the family invited nearly 1,500 relatives and friends to celebrate the wedding anniversary in a function hall in Gummadidala.

'6 'Black Snakes' Sold Their Honour': Himachal Chief Minister On Rebel MLAs

Mr Sukhu accused the BJP of being ill-at-ease with his government’s performance.

Shimla:

Six “black snakes” from the party sold their honour and tried to destabilise the Congress government by abstaining from voting on a budget which had welfare schemes for the poor, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said on Friday.

“How can people who sell their honour for money serve the people of their constituency,” he said, while addressing a public meeting in Dharampur in the Kasauli Assembly constituency of Solan district.

In political life, people who betray their party which gave them a chance to contest elections are called “black snakes,” he said.

If somebody realises his mistake, he can be forgiven, but first these MLAs should come out of the “jail” they have been in for the past 72 hours, Mr Sukhu said.

“Those who betrayed the party and played with the sentiments of the people of the state won’t be spared even by the Almighty,” he asserted.

The chief minister’s remarks were meant for the six Congress MLAs from Himachal Pradesh who cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha Poll on Tuesday, throwing their lot with BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan.

Mr Sukhu accused the BJP of being ill-at-ease with his government’s performance in curbing corruption and starting welfare schemes.

“I am here for the people of the state, for the development of my state, I am here for you all and not afraid of the conspiracies being hatched against me,” he said.

He added, “I will not allow the wealth of the state to be looted at any cost. My people are my strength and I am bound and committed to serve them until my last breath.”

Mr Sukhu accused Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, who is also a former state chief minister, of being power hungry, as he reiterated his claim that his government will complete its five-year tenure come what may.

Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sanjay Awasthi said an attempt was made by a few to destabilise the government with money power, which is against the ethos of democracy, and Himachal Pradesh has been put to shame by those few.

Universities in Telangana grapple with severe faculty shortage

Vacancies more than double the number of staff; workload on teachers goes up manifold

Universities in Telangana grapple with severe faculty shortage

Hyderabad: Universities in the State are grappling with a critical shortage of regular faculty members – vacancies being more than double the number of working staff.

This dearth of teaching staff, particularly professors, has the university colleges struggling to meet regular teaching work, research, and funding issues from various central funding agencies.

The academic affairs in 11 universities present a grim picture. Out of 2,825 teaching posts sanctioned in these universities, there are 1,977 vacancies, which is more than double the number of working staff i.e., 873. While there are a total of 1,267 sanctioned posts in 53 departments of Osmania University, close to 900 teaching staff positions are vacant. At Kakatiya University, 86 teachers work against a sanctioned strength of 409 faculty in 27 departments.

A dearth of professor-level teaching staff has hit several departments in these universities. Almost 12 to 13 departments including Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, Journalism and Mass Communication, and Psychology at Osmania University have been operating without a single professor.

While some departments are run with regular assistant professors and associate professors besides contractual staff and guest teachers, a few departments such as Archaeology, French, and German are only run by the academic consultants employed on a contractual basis. Also, nearly 10 departments of Kakatiya University have no professors.”The university sees at least 20 to 25 professors’ superannuation annually.

Due to lack of recruitment, the workload on existing teachers has gone up manifold. It is also affecting the research work,” said Prof B Manohar, president, OU Teachers Association.

To tide over the academic crisis, the previous BRS government had permitted recruitment to fill 1,061 vacancies with 415 posts alone in OU. However, the recruitment did not materialise due to a reservation case in the Supreme Court. The issue was resolved after the Central government passed an ordinance that mandated the university as a unit rather than a department for reservations in teaching positions.

Also, the previous government had passed the Telangana Universities Common Recruitment Board Bill, 2022 which could not see the light of day as Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan referred the Bill to the President of India, which is still pending.

Asst professors on contract seek regularisation

The Telangana Universities Assistant Professors (Contract) Association demanded that the Congress government fulfill its promise of regularising assistant professors working on a contractual basis. “The then Congress leaders and now Ministers Bhatti Vikramaka and Sridhar Babu had raised the issue of regularisation in the Assembly but are mum now,” said Dharma Teja, president, Telangana Universities Assistant Professors (Contract) Association.

There are nearly 1,400 assistant professors who have been working in 12 universities on a contract basis for several years. On the lines of contract degree, junior and polytechnic lecturers who were regularised, the assistant professors wanted their regularisation as well. “The regularisation of assistant professors on a contractual basis is needed to strengthen universities, which have a huge number of vacancies,” said Dr Ch Parandamulu, spokesperson for the association.

Hyderabad: Former Minister Kadiyam Srihari said on Friday that the Congress government was keen on indulging in politics and in the process, was sidelining people’s issues.

When the BRS conducted a public meeting at Nalgonda, the Congress government with the entire cabinet visited the Medigadda barrage.

Similarly, when the BRS inspected the Medigadda and Annaram barrages on Friday, the Congress party visited Palamuru Rangareddy Lift Irrigation scheme, he said.

Making a powerpoint presentation at Annaram barrage on the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, the former Minister said the total ayacut created since 1956 to 2014 was 42.77 lakh acres.

Under the BRS rule from 2014 to 2023, the ayacut created was 48.74 lakh acres, he said.

On the reasons for redesigning the Pranahita Chevella project, he said there were strong objections from the Maharashtra government due to submerging of 3786 acres.

This apart, the Central Water Commission had questioned the availability of 160 tmc of water for diversion to Yellampally reservoir.

The CWC also suggested to increase the reservoir capacities to match the demand and supply of water, he said. In the presentation, the former Minister said the estimates of Nagarjunasagar increased from Rs.122 crore in 1954 to Rs.1183 crore in 2000.

Likewise, Sriram Sagar project estimates shot up from Rs.40 crore in 1964 to Rs.4300 crore.

Jurala project cost escalated from Rs.70 crore to Rs. 1815 crore, he said, adding that the Congress could not blame the BRS over Kaleshwaram cost escalation. Material cost, land acquisition and other factors have to be considered, he said.
