BJP, BRS working in tandem to damage my image: CM Revanth

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy charged that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were conspiring to defeat Congress in erstwhile Mahabubnagar in the Lok Sabha elections. These two parties are working in tandem to damage my image by defeating the Mahabubnagar candidate C Vamshichand Reddy and Nagarkurnool candidate Mallu Ravi, the Chief Minister said at Gandhi Bhavan here on Friday.

“Their intention is to defeat the Congress in Mahabubnagar so that they could create a narrative citing party’s defeat in my own district,” Revanth Reddy charged. Exuding confidence that Congress would win the Mahabubnagar Local Authorities MLC Member bye-election with 200 votes, he said but for BRS and BJP’s conspiracies, Congress would have comfortably won Alampur and Gadwal seats in the Assembly elections.

The Chief Minister was very critical of BRS working president KT Rama Rao over his comments on the phone tapping issue. “How can KT Rama Rao speak so irresponsibly? He will have to face consequences accordingly,” Revanth Reddy said, adding all those, who were involved in the phone tapping issue, would be sent to Cherlapally jail.

He lashed out at the BJP Mahabubnagar candidate DK Aruna for failing to get water from Karnataka through RDS project or completing the Thumilla project. She became BJP National Vice-president but failed to get national project status for Palamuru Rangareddy Lift Irrigation scheme, he slammed.

Later, speaking at Telangana Pradesh Executive Committee meeting, the Chief Minister said the party high command had complimented Telangana’s 100 days governance. There was positive feedback from people and efforts should be made to win maximum seats in the Lok Sabha elections, he instructed the leaders.

He also assured that all those, who strive hard for the party’s success, would be offered suitable positions. Already, a few nominated posts have been filled up, he stressed.

'Moment Of The Day': Kohli Hugs Gambhir, Internet Can't Keep Calm. Watch

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Kolkata Knight Riders clash at the IPL 2024 had two men, who have been known to share a bit of history, on the opposite side – Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir. The last time the duo faced each other at the IPL 2023, it made for one of the lasting images in Indian cricket. Last year, Gambhir was associated with Lucknow Super Giants and after a match against the RCB, had a heated on-field argument with Virat Kohli. Both of them were heavily fined for that incident. That was not the first on-field altercation between the two.

However, what happened during the RCB vs KKR game on Friday, was quite the opposite. Gautam Gambhir approached Virat Kohli and hugged the RCB star during a strategic time-out.

Ahead of the match, IPL’s official broadcasters shared an old video of Gambhir where he cane bee seen delivering some interesting observations on RCB.

“One team which I wanted to beat every time, probably even in my dreams was RCB. Probably the second-most high profile team, flamboyant team with the owner and probably the squad – Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers. Honestly not won anything, still thought they won everything. That kind of attitude. I can’t take that. Probably the three best wins that KKR ever had was against RCB,” Gautam Gambhir says in the video.

“One thing that I want in my cricket career is go on the field and beat RCB.”

Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) allrounder Andre Russell showered praise on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and said that they have “great matchwinners” in their squad.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference, Russell said that KKR won’t be taking RCB for granted as they can take away any game. The Caribbean allrounder added that the Bengaluru-based franchise have good bowling unit.

“My mindset is very clear, especially coming after a win and getting some runs as well. [But] I am not going to take anything for granted. RCB is an amazing team and they have some great matchwinners, who can take the game away from us. They have a good bowling unit as well. So I hope that if I face five, six, seven, eight balls in the backend, I make the best use of it. But I would love the other batters to come to the party tomorrow and at least get some time in the middle,” Russell was quoted by ESPNcricinfo as saying.

Israel's Netanyahu Approves New Round Of Gaza Ceasefire Talks

Israel's Netanyahu Approves New Round Of Gaza Ceasefire Talks

The war began when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel (File)

Tel Aviv, Israel:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved Friday new talks on a Gaza ceasefire, a day after the world’s top court ordered Israel to ensure urgent humanitarian aid reaches people in the Palestinian territory.

But despite a binding United Nations Security Council resolution this week demanding an “immediate ceasefire”, fighting continued Friday, including around hospitals.

Regional fallout from the conflict also flared, with Israel saying it killed a Hezbollah rocket commander in Lebanon, and several Hezbollah fighters killed in Syria strikes that a war monitor blamed on Israel.

Netanyahu’s office said new talks on a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release will take place in Doha and Cairo “in the coming days… with guidelines for moving forward in the negotiations”, days after they appeared stalled.

In its order, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague said: “Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine, but… famine is setting in.”

Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, posted on X that the ruling was “a stark reminder that the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is man made + worsening”.

The court had ruled in January that Israel must facilitate “urgently needed” humanitarian aid to Gaza and prevent genocidal acts, but Israel rejected the case brought by South Africa.

The latest binding ICJ ruling, which has little means of enforcement, came as Israel’s military said Friday it was continuing operations in Al-Shifa Hospital, the territory’s largest, for a 12th day.

Throughout the coastal territory, dozens of people were killed overnight, the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said.

Among the dead were 12 people killed in a home in the southern city of Rafah, which has been regularly bombed ahead of a mooted Israeli ground operation there.

Men worked under the light of mobile phones to free people trapped under debris after an air strike, AFPTV images showed.

The ICJ ordered Israel to “take all necessary and effective measures to ensure, without delay” the supply “of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance”.

‘Immediate ceasefire’

The war began with Hamas’s October 7 attack that resulted in about 1,160 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign to destroy Hamas has killed at least 32,623 people, mostly women and children, Gaza’s health ministry says.

Large parts of the territory have been reduced to rubble, and most of Gaza’s population are now sheltering in Rafah.

On Monday the UN Security Council demanded an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and “ensuring humanitarian access”.

Member states are obliged to abide by such resolutions, but the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) charity said  nothing has changed on the ground.

Aid groups say only a fraction of the supplies required have been allowed in since October, when Israel placed Gaza under near-total siege.

Israel has blamed shortages on the Palestinian side, namely a lack of capacity to distribute aid, with humanitarians saying not enough trucks are allowed in to make deliveries.

With limited ground access, several nations have staged airdrops, and a sea corridor from Cyprus has delivered its first food aid.

Heavy damage

The UN says Gaza’s health system is collapsing “due to ongoing hostilities and access constraints”.

Israel’s military accuses Hamas and the Islamic Jihad of hiding inside medical facilities, using patients, staff and displaced people for cover — charges the operatives have denied.

On Friday the army said it was “continuing precise operation activities in Shifa Hospital” where it began a raid early last week.

Troops first raided Al-Shifa in November, before Israel in January announced it had “completed the dismantling” of Hamas’s command structure in northern Gaza. Palestinian group and commanders had since returned to Al-Shifa, the army said.

Netanyahu has said troops “are holding the northern Gaza Strip” and also the southern city of Khan Yunis, amid heavy fighting.

“We have bisected the Strip and we are preparing to enter Rafah,” he said Thursday.

Netanyahu is under domestic pressure over his failure to bring home all of the hostages seized by Hamas on October 7. Israel says about 130 captives remain in Gaza, including 34 presumed dead.

About 200 operatives have been killed during the latest Al-Shifa operation, the military said.

Near Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Yunis, troops carried out “targeted raids on terrorist infrastructure”, killing dozens in combat backed by air support, the army said Thursday.

Israeli tanks and armoured vehicles have massed around another Khan Yunis health facility, the Nasser Hospital, the Gaza health ministry said.

An analysis of satellite images shows heavily damaged areas around the Nasser and Al-Amal hospitals.

Deadliest count

Since the Gaza war began, Israel has increased its strikes in Syria, targeting army positions and Iran-backed forces including Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement, a key Hamas ally.

A Britain-based war monitor said Israeli air strikes Friday in north Syria killed at least 42 people, six from Hezbollah and 36 Syrian soldiers.

And Israel’s military said it killed Ali Abdel Hassan Naim, deputy commander of Hezbollah’s rocket unit, in an air strike in south Lebanon Friday.

US, Egyptian and Qatari mediators have tried to secure a truce in Gaza, but those talks had appeared deadlocked more than halfway through the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Tensions have risen between Netanyahu and Washington, which provides billions of dollars in military aid but has grown increasingly vocal about the war’s impact on civilians.

Washington has also raised the issue of Gaza’s post-war rule. It has suggested a future role for the Palestinian Authority, which has partial administrative control in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

On Thursday, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas approved the new government of prime minister Mohammed Mustafa, who said his cabinet will work on “visions to reunify the institutions, including assuming responsibility for Gaza”.

Hamas forcibly took Gaza from Abbas’s government in 2007.

Netanyahu says Israel must have “security responsibility” in Gaza, and has rejected calls for a Palestinian state.

Rythu Bandhu paid to 92.68 percent farmers: Minister

Representational Image

Hyderabad: Rythu Bandhu assistance for Yasangi 2023-24 has been disbursed till date to 64,75,819 farmers, according to the Minister for Agriculture, Thummala Nageshwar Rao on Friday. In an official release issued here he said that some 92.68 per cent of the Yasangi farmers were covered under the programme in less than three months.

This is much in contrast to the disbursal pattern of the previous installments during the BRS government. It took the previous government to complete the process of disbursal four months and five days during Kharif, 2018-19 and five months and eleven days during Yasangi,2028-19.

Similarly in 2019-20, the Rythu Bandhu remittances took five months and eleven days during Kharif and one month 19 days during Yasangi.

In 2020-21, the Rythu Bandhu disbursal process was completed in five months and sixteen days during Khraif and two months and twenty four days during Yasangi. In 2022-23, it took two months and eight days during Kharif and four months and twenty eight days during Yasangi.

In 2023-24 Kharif, the previous government had completed the process in three months and 20 days. The Minister reiterated that the Congress government remained committed to the wellbeing of the peasant community and extended priority to their programmes despite the fact that the financial situation of the state was bad. But for the ill advised moves of the previous government, the State would have been in a position to reach out to the farmers who suffered crop losses as the reservoirs were going dry. The ground water table was also falling drastically.

The government had already announced a compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre to help the farmers to make up for their losses. The government was forced to let off the water available in the Medigadda and other barrages where in structural issues were reported due to the faulty designs used in their construction, he added. The Retired Railway Employee Who Took On Gangster-Politician Mukhtar Ansari

The Retired Railway Employee Who Took On Gangster-Politician Mukhtar Ansari

Harish Chandra Vishwakarma, an ex railway employee, who fought against Mukhtar Ansari

Mau:

The stealing of 2,000 bricks was the first trigger. The second was the land grab. Both allegedly by gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari’s men. He had retired in 2003 but there was no rest period.

Harish Chandra Vishwakarma, a former railway employee, filed a land-grab case against regional strongman Mukhtar Ansari the same year. It became the first land-grab case in a long list of cases against the regional heavyweight, who died of a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Banda in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. He was 63.

“We all have to die one day. It is both your story and mine,” Mr Vishwakarma, 82, who lives in Mau, told NDTV philosophically when asked about the gangster’s death.

Since 2005, till his death, Mukhtar Ansari had been lodged in different jails of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

“There was a land opposite my house which was allegedly taken over by Mukhtar Ansari’s men. A school was built there and Mukhtar Ansari was called to inaugurate it,” Mr Vishwakarma, 82, who lives in Mau, told NDTV.

“To build a road leading up to the school, his (Mukhtar Ansari) men stole the 2,000 bricks that I had bought to build my home,” he said.

When Mukhtar Ansari – who hailed from Mau and was believed to have strong influence in Ghazipur and Varanasi districts as well – came to inaugurate the school, he was weighed in coins, he added.

The gangster won the Mau assembly seat five times in a row beginning 1996, including twice as a Bahujan Samaj Party candidate. He last contested the assembly polls in 2017.

Upon inquiring, the retired railway employee found that the land belonged to the state government. He promptly filed a case against Mukhtar Ansari and his men.

Asked how he managed the money, Mr Vishwakarma said he used his pension to fight the case.

Mr Vishwakarma says his big brother was assaulted by Mukhtar Ansari’s men as he refused to withdraw the case.

As he won after many years, the school was closed and the Mau Nagarapalika took over the property.

He never found the stolen bricks, but Mr Vishwakarma, who lost his wife in 2018, was able to build his house.

Telangana secures third rank in employment condition index

Hyderabad: Telangana has been ranked first among south Indian States and third among 22 major States in the country, in terms of employment condition in the country as per the India Employment Report 2024 published by International Labour Organisation (ILO). Further, the State clocked lowest migration rate of 25.2 per cent among the south Indian States of which around 56.2 per cent migrated for employment among the men.

Based on the employment condition index for 2022 released by the ILO, Delhi secured top spot with a score of 0.79, followed by Himachal Pradesh with score of 0.67. Only these two States have scored higher than the national score of 0.65. Telangana which was ranked 16th rank in 2019, climbed to third spot in 2022, as per the index. Though Telangana as part of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh secured fifth and fourth positions in 2005 and 2012 respectively, it’s rank plummeted to 16th in 2019 following the State bifurcation in 2014.

All the three States along with Gujarat, have consistently performed well in employment generation and secured top positions in the employment condition index, reflecting their robust economic and employment conditions especially improved conditions for women.

Except for Uttarkhand and Gujarat, which were ranked fourth and fifth respectively, all the other BJP-ruled States performed poorly and were ranked below 10. The ‘employment condition index’ has improved between 2004-05 and 2021-22. But a majority of BJP-ruled (including NDA) States like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh, along with Odisha and West Bengal, have remained at the bottom throughout this period.

Telangana scored 0.63 and secured second spot in ‘Male employment condition index 2022’ as per the ILO report. While Delhi bagged first rank with a score of 0.78, Gujarat trailed behind Telangana for third position with a score of 0.61. However, Telangana was ranked seventh with a score of 0.58 in the ‘Female employment condition index 2022’.

After US, Germany, UN Comment On Arvind Kejriwal, Vice President's Rejoinder

After US, Germany, UN Comment On Arvind Kejriwal, Vice President's Rejoinder

Mr Dhankhar emphasised that “equality before law is the new norm” in India.

New Delhi:

Stressing that India is a unique democracy, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has said the country does not need lessons from anyone on the rule of law. His comments came after Germany, the US and the United Nations made remarks on the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The questions posed to representatives of the US and the UN, which triggered the comments, were also about the freezing of the Congress’ bank accounts.

Speaking at an event on Friday, the Vice President said, “India is a democracy with a robust judicial system. This can’t be compromised by any individual or any group. India does not need lessons from anyone on rule of law.”

Mr Dhankhar emphasised that “equality before law is the new norm” in India and those who thought they are beyond the law are being held accountable.

In a possible reference to the AAP’s planned rally against Mr Kejriwal’s arrest at the Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on Sunday, which will be attended by several leaders from the INDIA alliance, the Vice President said, “But what do we see? The moment the law takes its course, they take to the streets, high-decibel debates, camouflaging culpability of the worst nature by human rights. This is happening under our nose,” he added.

Describing the Indian judicial system as robust, independent and pro-people, he asked, “What is the justification for a person or an institution or an organisation to take to the streets when the law is set in motion?”

Addressing the 70th Founders’ Day celebrations of the Indian Institute of Public Administration, Mr Dhankhar also said people engaging in the “transgression of law” are now playing the victim card.

“Corruption is not a passage to opportunity, employment or a contract anymore. It is a passage to jail… Can you go on a high moral ground that the corrupt must not be dealt with because it is a festive season or it is farming season? How can there be any season to save those who are culpable,” the Vice President asked.

After the remarks by representatives of the US and Germany, India had summoned their envoys. It had termed the comments “unwarranted”, “biased” and “unacceptable”, but has not reacted to the statement by a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres so far.

Phone tapping: Hyderabad police officially register case, add relevant sections

Praneeth Rao

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad police investigating charges of phone tapping, have now officially registered a case of phone tapping and added relevant sections under the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885. Earlier, only sections of criminal breach by public servant, database destruction and other offences were added to the case.

A memo was filed by the Punjagutta police requesting the court to allow adding sections of the Telegraph Act to the case. The police are interrogating former Special Intelligence Bureau DSP Praneeth Rao for allegedly tapping the phone calls of politicians and other noted personalities.

Officials are trying to find out what information the hard disks, which were destroyed, had in them. They are ascertaining facts of whose phones were tapped and to whom the confidential information was passed on.

A four member team headed by Jubilee Hills ACP P.Venkatagiri has already intensified the investigation seized cell phones from Praneeth Rao. The police found that Praneet had also tapped the phones of prominent real estate traders and film personalities and celebrities as well.

Meanwhile, former Task Force Officer on Special Duty (OSD) P.Radha Kishan Rao who was arrested by the investigation team after eight hours of grilling on Thursday night was produced before the magistrate at his residence in Kompally on Friday.

Rao was remanded in judicial custody and shifted to the Central Prison in Chanchalguda.

Dogs Can Detect PTSD Episodes By Smelling Humans' Breath: Study

Dogs Can Detect PTSD Episodes By Smelling Humans' Breath: Study

Study shows that at least some dogs can also detect these episodes via breath. (Representational)

New Delhi:

Dogs might be able to detect an onset of a post-traumatic stress episode, according to a new study.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) arises from being exposed to a catastrophic or traumatic event. Symptoms can include re-experiencing that catastrophic event, hyperarousal, avoiding any reminders, and cognitive or mood issues.

While dogs are currently trained to respond to behavioural and physical cues suggesting the study showed that at least some dogs can also detect these episodes via breath, according to Laura Kiiroja of Dalhousie University, Canada, first author of the study published in the journal Frontiers in Allergy.

“PTSD service dogs are already trained to assist people during episodes of distress,” Kiiroja said.

For the study, the scientists recruited 26 humans as ‘scent donors’, 54 per cent of whom met the diagnostic requirements for PTSD. They ‘donated’ scents by attending sessions where they were reminded of their traumatic experiences while wearing different facemasks.

One facemask, worn by the participants under normal conditions, provided a calm breath sample, while another one, worn while recalling trauma, provided a target breath sample. The participants also responded to a questionnaire about their stress levels and their emotions.

The scientists also recruited 25 pet dogs to train in scent-detection. Only two — Ivy and Callie — were skilled and motivated enough to complete the study, they said.

These dogs were trained to recognise the target odour from the facemasks, and were found to be 90 per cent accurate in distinguishing between a stressed and a non-stressed facemask sample.

The scientists then presented the dogs with a series of samples – one at a time – to see if they could still accurately detect the chemicals the participants were releasing under stress and contributing to their ‘scent profile’.

In this second experiment, Ivy achieved 74 per cent accuracy while Callie achieved 81 per cent accuracy.

“Both Ivy and Callie found this work inherently motivating,” Kiiroja said. “Their limitless appetite for delicious treats was also an asset. In fact, it was much harder to convince them to take a break than to commence work. Callie in particular made sure there was no dilly-dallying.” The researchers said that while there is some evidence that dogs may be capable of sensing bodily chemicals linked to a human’s stress, no studies have investigated if dogs could learn to detect such chemicals linked to PTSD.

Dogs can help patients by alerting to and interrupting episodes when their companions are struggling with their symptoms, the researchers said.

If dogs could respond to their companions’ stress markers on the breath, they could potentially interrupt PTSD episodes at an earlier stage, and make their interventions more effective, the team said.
