Ottawa, Canada:

Canada’s population touched a record high of 40.77 million in 2023, largely driven by temporary immigration, Statistics Canada said on Wednesday. The country added 1.27 million people in 2023, up 3.2% from the previous year – marking the highest growth since 1957.

Why It Is Important

The influx of immigrants has been blamed for a housing shortage that has pushed up house prices and sent affordability to new lows, hurting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s approval ratings. The population growth has also pulled down the country’s gross domestic product per capita figures as seen in the last quarter as well as productivity levels, economists and the Bank of Canada have said.

Key Quotes

“In 2023, the vast majority (97.6%) of Canada’s population growth came from international migration (both permanent and temporary immigration) and the remaining portion (2.4%) came from natural increase,” Statscan said in a statement.

“This was the second straight year that temporary immigration drove population growth and the third year in a row with a net increase of NPRs (non-permanent residents),” it said.

Context

Canada has heavily relied on immigration to boost its labor force and economic growth, with almost a quarter of its population being non-native born Canadian residents in 2021, according to IMF’s 2021 report. That is the highest level among the G7 nations.

But in the last few months Trudeau’s Liberal government has tried to counter pressure through measures to cap the number of international students and non-permanent residents that can come into Canada each year.

By The Numbers

It is estimated that 2,661,784 non-permanent residents were living in Canada on January 1, 2024, Statscan data showed. Among them, 2,332,886 were permit holders and their family members living with them, and 328,898 were asylum claimants with or without work or study permits.

New Delhi:

The ED has summoned Amit Palekar, the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Goa unit chief, and some other party leaders from the coastal state for questioning in a money-laundering case linked to the Delhi excise policy on March 28, official sources said on Wednesday.

The AAP leaders have been asked to depose at the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) office in Goa’s Panjim on Thursday, the sources said.

Amit Palekar, who was the AAP’s chief ministerial face during the February 2022 Goa Assembly polls, had recently said there was no evidence to prove that any illicit money was sent to the state, asserting that he and his party colleagues were ready to face any inquiry.

The ED arrested AAP national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the case on March 21.

The agency has claimed in its chargesheet that the AAP used “proceeds of crime” to the tune of about Rs 45 crore in its Goa poll campaign, from the Rs 100 crore “bribe” that was pumped in by the “South Group” that allegedly involved Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha.

Arvind Kejriwal will be produced before a Delhi court by the ED at the end of his remand period on Thursday.

Police have recovered 350 grams of charas, valued over Rs 10 lakhs, from the possession of the accused, which was being transported in a Mercedes car, the official said.

The accused have been identified as Hanumante (30), a former wrestler, and Adnan Ahmed (32), police said.

“The team received a tip-off on Monday night that the drug traffickers are purchasing charas from Malana, Himachal Pradesh and further selling the same in different parts of Delhi, NCR and other parts of India,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Sanjay Bhatia said.

Police said that a team was formed and laid a trap near Wazirabad flyover and two persons in a Mercedes car were arrested, the officer said.

On interrogation, they disclosed that the charas was sourced by them from Malana village in district Kullu. Accordingly, a case under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act has been registered, Bhatia further said.

Hanumante told police that he had participated in wrestling at junior international level. He has also participated at National level in the ‘super heavyweight’ category.

“During the competition in the year 2014, he sustained injury and got bed ridden for some time. Thereafter, he fell into bad company and started consuming drugs,” the Additional CP said.

Man, Wife Brutally Beat Grandmother With Stick For Not Cooking Properly

The couple has been arrested.

Bhopal:

A gut-wrenching video of a man and his wife mercilessly assaulting his paternal grandmother with a stick in Bhopal went viral on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of the couple as they were trying to flee the city. The trigger for the inhumane treatment was the woman – who appears to be at least in her 70s – not cooking food to the couple’s liking, said police officials.

The man and his wife are residents of Bhopal’s Jahangirabad area and, neighbours said, it was common to hear them beating up the woman, who was a widow. The video of the latest assault was shot secretly by a neighbour from the window of the couple’s house and it went viral on Wednesday morning.

The video shows the woman sitting on the floor of the house as she is confronted by her grandson, who is sitting in front of her, and her granddaughter-in-law, who is on the edge of a bed. After berating her, the younger woman twists the older woman’s arm. As she begins to scream, her grandson holds her down in his lap and covers her mouth.

His wife then begins hitting her repeatedly with a stick. After an agonisingly long time, the man lets his grandmother go, only to elbow her in the back as his wife hits her on the head with the stick, before pinning her down again.

After the video was widely circulated, the Jahangirabad police began looking for the couple and caught them as they were attempting to leave the city.
