11-year-old girl beheaded by uncle in Bengal’s Malda, people stage massive protests

Malda: An 11-year-old girl has been beheaded allegedly by her uncle in West Bengal’s Malda district, police said on Thursday.

While the accused claimed he killed the girl as revenge for her father humiliating him and even beating him up in public several times in the past, police also suspect that she might have been raped before being murdered.

The torso and the head of the girl, who had been missing since January 29, were found in different spots in Malda city, a police officer said.

The accused, a 27-year-old man, was traced through a CCTV footage, in which he was seen with the girl just before she went missing. Her father lodged a police complaint, stating the girl went out of her house around 6.15 pm on January 29 but did not return home.

In the CCTV footage of Uttar Baluchar area, the girl was seen hopping on the motorcycle of the accused near her house.

When questioned, the accused at first gave misleading statements but later confessed to committing the crime and led the police to recover the head and the torso, the officer said.  The accused claimed he killed his niece at an isolated place within an hour of picking her up on his motorcycle as he wanted revenge because her father had humiliated him and even beat him up in public several times in the past, the officer said.

However, police also suspect that the girl might have been raped. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to Malda Medical College and Hospital.

The accused was arrested and produced before a court, which remanded him to 12 days in police custody.

Meanwhile, the incident has sparked a massive public outcry in the city, with people from all walks of life staging protests against the incident and shops remaining closed. The protesters demanded strict action against the accused.

Major political parties, including the BJP, TMC and the CPI(M) staged protest rallies and silent vigils to condemn the incident. Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP claimed that the girl could have been saved had the police acted swiftly.

“A girl child went missing on 29th Jan in Malda. Her family promptly informed the police and made a public appeal as well. However, police were occupied with making arrangements for CM’s sudden visit… Unfortunately, the mutilated & mangled dead body of the girl was found later on. The girl could have been saved had the police acted swiftly. This is the condition of public safety in West Bengal,” he posted on X.

BJP’s Malda (Dakshin) district committee vice president Mousumi Mitra alleged that such incidents have become routine in West Bengal as strict punishment is not awarded in such cases.
“We want exemplary punishment for the accused,” she said.

BJP workers staged a protest outside English Bazar police station. Ruling TMC, which took out a silent vigil in protest against the incident, demanded capital punishment for the accused.
“We condemn the incident. We want the accused to be hanged to death,” TMC’s Malda district committee general secretary Prosenjit Das said.

The CPI (M) submitted a deputation at the English Bazar police station over the incident, and brought out a protest rally.

CPI (M) English Bazar area committee secretary Tushar Goswami said, “All those directly or indirectly involved in the incident must be arrested and awarded strict punishment. Police should not be busy only with providing security to VIPs. They should also provide security to common people, especially girls and women.” A large contingent of police has been deployed in Uttar Baluchar area to maintain law and order.

UN Palestinian Aid Agency May Shut Down In Feb If Funding Doesn't Resume

Several major donor countries to UNRWA said they would suspend funding (Representational)

Jerusalem:

The UN aid agency for Palestinian refugees said Thursday that international funding cuts may force the shutdown of its operations across the region “by the end of February”.

Several major donor countries to UNRWA said they would suspend funding after Israel alleged 12 agency employees took part in Hamas’s October 7 attack.

UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini said that “if the funding remains suspended, we will most likely be forced to shut down our operations by end of February not only in Gaza but also across the region”.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said after talks with Lazzarini that he “emphasised the immediate need for the international community to support UNRWA, which plays an indispensable role for Palestinian refugees, serving as a lifeline for over two million Palestinians facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in Gaza”.

A foreign ministry statement in Amman said that both Safadi and Lazzarini urged countries that have suspended aid to UNRWA to “reconsider their decision”.

“Any reduction in financial support provided to the agency will exacerbate the suffering of the people of Gaza, who are already on the brink of mass starvation,” the statement said.

The division bench comprising Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Anil Kumar Jukanti were dealing with writ appeals filed by producer and director of the film challenging the single judge order. The counsel representing Telugu Desam Party (TDP) contended that the movie depicted Chandrababu Naidu, Pawan Kalyan and Nara Lokesh based on some key political moments in the life of Chie Minsiter Jaganmohan Reddy. He further argued that the film was deliberately designed to benefit the YSRCP politically before the elections. When they sought reasons for U certification to the film, the counsel representing producers raised objections that it was not appropriate to seek reasons when a U certification was issued and the reasons would have to be given only when the Censor Board Revision Committee issued the A or U certificate to the film. After hearing both sides at length from past three days the bench reserved the case for orders.

Special Supreme Court Bench To Hear Hemant Soren's Petition Against Arrest

Special Bench Of Supreme Court To Hear Hemant Soren's Petition Against Arrest

Hemant Soren was arrested on January 31 by the Enforcement Directorate (File)

New Delhi:

A special bench of three Supreme Court judges will hear arrested Jharkhand leader Hemant Soren’s petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate.

The special bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice MM Sundaresh, and Justice Bela Trivedi will hear tomorrow the petition which requests Mr Soren’s immediate release.

Hemant Soren, the beleaguered Chief Minister of Jharkhand, accused the ED of arresting him as part of a “well-orchestrated conspiracy” by the Centre ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Mr Soren had to resign his post over the agency’s actions against him.

Mr Soren has urged the top court in his plea to declare his arrest unwarranted, arbitrary, and in violation of his fundamental rights, reported news agency PTI.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader was arrested yesterday in a money laundering case linked to the “illegal” possession of huge parcels of land and his alleged association with the “land mafia”.

The arrest has curtailed Mr Soren’s liberty and ED officers have abused their powers for extraneous considerations under the dictates of the Central government as the Petitioner is the leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, a prominent Opposition party and an active constituent of the INDIA bloc, the plea said.

“The arrest is part of a well-orchestrated conspiracy which has been given shape at the anvil of the general elections slated in a few months,” it said.

Narrating the sequence of his arrest, Mr Soren, 48, said he had moved a plea before the top court on January 31 apprehending his arrest by the ED.

“It was requested that Respondent No. 2 (the ED) should await the outcome of the proceedings before the Supreme Court,” the plea said.

Despite the intimation, the ED took Mr Soren into “illegal custody with the deliberate intent to interfere with the present Writ Petition”, it added.

In his petition, Hemant Soren said he was arrested from the Raj Bhavan when he went to tender his resignation as the Chief Minister with MLAs from his party and those of his allies who enjoy a clear majority in the state assembly.

He alleged the ED’s action, at the behest of the Centre, was aimed at toppling his democratically elected government.

The former Chief Minister said the alleged recovery of Rs 36 lakh from his Delhi residence on January 29 cannot be a ground for arrest.

“The said premises is a leasehold property of the state of Jharkhand and is used for residential and office purposes by the state. No notice of the search was given to the state of Jharkhand or the petitioner. It does not appear from the grounds of arrest that videography was made of the search. There is no material alleged in the grounds of arrest to link the cash amounting to Rs 36 lakhs allegedly recovered from the said premises with the predicate (main or scheduled) offence,” he said.
