US Moon Lander To Be "Put To Sleep" Soon, May Wake Up In 3 Weeks

US Moon Lander Odysseus To Be 'Put To Sleep' After Historic Mission

Odysseus carries NASA instruments designed to improve our understanding of the lunar south pole.

Washington:

The US spacecraft that touched down on the Moon last week and is currently running on solar power will soon be “put to sleep” once lunar night kicks in, mission officials said Wednesday.

But while the mission that saw the first ever Moon landing by a private company is coming to an end, Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus told reporters that there are hopes to “wake it up” in about three weeks, when the Sun is out again.

The historic mission has been hailed as a success by Intuitive Machines and NASA, even as it ran into multiple problems along the way, including a landing that saw the uncrewed probe, named Odysseus, tip over upon reaching the surface.

“What we’ve gotten in terms of data on the vehicle is a tremendous amount of the guidance, navigation control data, all the propulsion data, all the performance data for the vehicle that will allow us to completely reconstruct the mission,” Altemus told reporters at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, in Florida.

“What we’re going to do is kind of tuck Ody in for the cold night of the moon, and see if we can’t wake him up here when we get the solar noon,” in about three weeks, he said.

Intuitive Machines officials weren’t sure if the batteries, after going through the ensuing plunging nighttime temperatures, would be able to pass on the power generated by the probe’s solar panels, but “why not try?” asked Altemus.

NASA is planning to return astronauts to the Moon later this decade, and paid Intuitive Machines around $120 million for the mission, as part of an initiative to delegate cargo missions to the private sector and stimulate a lunar economy.

Odysseus carries a suite of NASA instruments designed to improve scientific understanding of the lunar south pole, where the space agency plans to send astronauts under its Artemis program later this decade.

Experiments on board

Scientists have already begun to examine radio waves coming from Earth using one of the instruments onboard.

Another experiment was unable to analyze the amount of dust thrown up during the descent as planned, but was still able to be launched once the lander was on the ground.

While the solar panels were able to keep the batteries running successfully, they were not in the ideal position due the way the craft tipped over upon landing.

A photo Odysseus was able to take of itself showed some of the difficulties it faced landing, with at least one of the six legs broken and the engine kicking up lunar dust.

A failure in the lander’s navigation system had complicated its final descent.

The craft is tilted about 30 degrees, Altemus said.

The mission “is a success from NASA’s point of view,” the space agency’s chief, Bill Nelson, told reporters Wednesday.

The United States, along with international partners, want to eventually develop long-term habitats on the south pole, harvesting ice there for drinking water — and for rocket fuel for eventual onward voyages to Mars.

Intuitive Machines has two more Moon missions planned this year, both part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, which works with the private sector.

In addition to being the first ever successful private lunar landing, Artemis also marks the first return by the United States to the Moon in five decades.

“People asked… ‘We did it 50 years ago, why is it so hard?'” Altemus said.

Given the constraints involved — cost targets, the quick schedule, technical challenges in landing on the south pole — “We’ve fundamentally changed the economics of landing on the moon,” he said.

“And we’ve kicked open the door for a robust thriving system in our economy in the future.”

US Halts Execution As Officials Fail To Find Vein For Lethal Injection

US State Halts Man's Execution As Officials Fail To Find Vein For Lethal Injection

Officials failed to set an IV line in Thomas Creech’s arms and legs

Washington:

The execution by lethal injection of a convicted serial killer in Idaho was halted on Wednesday after a medical team was unable to insert an intravenous line.

Thomas Creech, 73, was strapped to a table in the execution chamber for an hour as repeated attempts were made to establish an IV line to deliver the lethal drugs, prison officials and witnesses said.

Idaho Department of Corrections (IDOC) director Josh Tewalt said the execution was called off after the failure of eight attempts to set an IV line in Creech’s arms and legs.

“We don’t have an idea of timeframes or next steps at this point,” Tewalt told reporters at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution south of the capital Boise. “Those are things we will be discussing in the days ahead.”

Brenda Rodriguez, a reporter with the local KTVB television station, said Creech did not appear to have been in severe pain at any point although he told the medical staff at one stage that his “legs hurt a bit.”

“At the very end, when the execution was halted, he was just looking up,” said Rodriguez, one of four media witnesses.

“He kept mumbling a couple of words that I could not make out,” she said. “And also it felt like he was almost in relief.”

Creech, who has been on Death Row for more than 40 years and was to have been the first person executed in Idaho in 12 years, was sentenced to die for murdering his cellmate in 1981 with a battery-filled sock.

He was imprisoned at the time after being convicted of five other murders, although he claimed to have committed dozens more.

There have been a number of botched executions in the United States in recent years, including a failed attempt in Alabama in November 2022 to execute convicted killer Kenneth Smith by lethal injection.

Smith was eventually put to death in January of this year in the first execution in the country to be carried out using nitrogen gas.

Most of the botched executions have involved difficulties in inserting the IV needles that deliver the lethal drugs, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

A Texas man is also scheduled to be executed on Wednesday for a double murder he insists he did not commit, in a case that has drawn the attention of the Catholic Church and celebrities Kim Kardashian and Martin Sheen.

Ivan Cantu, 50, was convicted in 2001 of the murders of his cousin James Mosqueda and Amy Kitchen, Mosqueda’s fiancee, who were shot to death.

Cantu’s then-fiancee, Amy Boettcher, who has since died, testified at his trial that he had admitted committing the murders and took her to Mosqueda’s home afterwards to look for hidden drugs and cash.

Among the evidence submitted at the trial was a pair of jeans with blood from the victims that was found in Cantu’s kitchen trash can.

Lawyers for Cantu maintain that Boettcher lied on the witness stand and the jeans, which were too large for Cantu, were planted in the trash can.

Cantu has steadfastly proclaimed his innocence and said the murders were carried out by a drug dealer to whom Mosqueda owed a substantial sum of money.

The Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops has urged that the execution be halted because of “serious uncertainties” surrounding the case.

Kardashian, who has been active in prison reform, urged Texas’s conviction integrity unit to look into the case. “The time to act to save Ivan Cantu is now!” she said in a post on X.

Sheen, an opponent of the death penalty, made an appeal on Instagram for people to sign a MoveOn.org petition urging Texas Governor Greg Abbott to grant a stay of execution. The petition has drawn 150,000 signatures.

“Ivan was wrongfully convicted of murder more than 20 years ago,” the star of “The West Wing” said. “Time is running out.”

Capital punishment has been abolished in 23 US states, while the governors of six others — Arizona, California, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Tennessee — have put a hold on its use.

There were 24 executions in the United States in 2023, all of them carried out by lethal injection.

'Mob Rule' Replacing Democracy In UK, Need To Change That: Sunak To Top Cops

UK PM Rishi Sunak held a meeting with police chiefs on Wednesday

London:

Britain is descending into “mob rule” and police will do more to protect the country’s democracy, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Wednesday, after the government announced extra funding to keep lawmakers safe.

Many British lawmakers have said the abuse directed at them has become more intense since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza, with some fearing for their safety if they air their views on the conflict.

Last week parliament descended into chaos as tensions flared over a vote on Gaza, with the House of Commons speaker citing “frightening” threats against lawmakers for a decision to break with usual parliamentary procedure.

“There is a growing consensus that mob rule is replacing democratic rule. And we’ve got to collectively, all of us, change that urgently,” Sunak said at a meeting with police chiefs on Wednesday, according to remarks released by his office.

“We simply cannot allow this pattern of increasingly violent and intimidatory behaviour which is, as far as anyone can see, intended to shout down free debate and stop elected representatives from doing their job. That is simply undemocratic.”

Earlier, the interior ministry announced funding worth 31 million pounds ($39 million) to provide additional security for lawmakers and other officials.

Sunak said a new Democratic Policing Protocol would commit to extra patrols and make clear that protests at the homes of elected representatives should be treated as intimidatory.

It also makes clear that from now on police should take a “consistent and robust approach … to protect our democratic processes from intimidation, disruption, from subversion”, he said.

Ayodhya to have its own beach soon

Ayodhya: One of the banks of Saryu river in Ayodhya will be developed as a beach, popularly known as ‘chowpatty’, an official said.

The Uttar Pradesh Housing Department has given its consent to the proposal of the local development authority to set up a chowpatty at Ram Ki Paidi.

The Ayodhya Development authority (ADA) has started its homework to provide a variety of food items that are made in a hygienic manner.

“The idea is to create multiple temporary structures, zones for housing food carts and covered spots under canopies or pergolas at Ram Ki Paidi,” said a senior officer from the authority.

A tender has been floated to begin work at the site and the selected agency would be given six months to complete the civil works, after which space would be given out to food vendors.

A budget of close to Rs 4.66 crore has been set aside to give shape to the project.

Besides, building the basic structure, electrification, sanitation, firefighting, water supply, horticulture, parking zone and paved entry route will have to be created by the contractor.

A seating capacity for a minimum of 50 individuals would also have to be provided at the site.

Man Strangles Business Partner In Delhi, Then Kills Self

Man Strangles Business Partner In Delhi, Then Kills Self

The police said the motive for the crime is unknown (Representational)

New Delhi:

A 32-year-old Delhi woman missing since February 23 was allegedly strangled by her business partner, who is also suspected to have died by suicide in Haryana’s Sonipat, the city police said on Wednesday.

The woman’s body was found on Wednesday at a Narela playschool that she was planning to open with her business partner Sohan Lal, they said.

According to a complaint lodged by Swatantra Nagar resident Vijay Kumar at Narela police station on February 24, his daughter left home on February 23 on a two-wheeler and did not return.

The woman was divorced and lived with her father.

Kumar informed that she was last seen with her business partner Sohan Lal, with whom she was planning to start the Tiny Dream Berry Playschool in Narela. The playschool is not operational yet and consists of a basement and a room on the ground floor acting as the office with another shop to the right, a senior police officer said.

The officer said Kumar called on his daughter’s mobile phone on February 24 but it was received by an unidentified person. The person informed Kumar that he was near the railway tracks in Sonipat’s Harshana village where a man was trying to commit suicide. On a video call, Kumar identified the man trying to kill himself as Sohan Lal.

“He (Kumar) immediately reached Harshana village and collected the (victim’s) mobile phone from the unidentified person. By that time, Sohan Lal had left the place,” the officer said.

Subsequently, Kumar lodged a missing person’s complaint at Narela police station on February 24.

“During the inquiry, the playschool premises were checked in presence of the father. However, the main office was shuttered and locked,” said the officer.

The mobile numbers of the woman and Sohan Lal were sent for call detail record analysis and location information gathered. Sohan Lal’s last location was revealed to be Haryana’s Barauta.

The victim’s father subsequently got the playschool’s office shutter opened with the landlord’s help and noticed his daughter’s body behind the main desk. He called the local police, who took custody of the body, the officer said.

Her dupatta was wrapped around her neck and it appears that she was strangulated to death, he added.

The police checked for Sohan Lal’s whereabouts and, after contacting the Sonipat GRP, found that one person was found dead on the railway tracks on February 25. The body is being preserved in a mortuary.

“The body is strongly suspected to be that of Sohan Lal. It is now suspected that Sohan Lal strangled her (the woman) and committed suicide,” the officer said.

The motive for the crime is unknown. A murder case is being registered, he added.

Bridge Too Far? Meant To Be Linked, 2 Mumbai Flyovers Have A 6-Foot Gap

Bridge Too Far? Meant To Be Linked, 2 Mumbai Flyovers Have A 6-Foot Gap

The government has claimed the bridge’s height had to be raised because of a new Railways’ policy.

Mumbai:

Aligning and linking two important flyovers has proven to be a bridge too far for the Mumbai civic body, which is now facing ridicule for leaving a vertical gap of nearly six feet between them. The misstep has also sparked a political row, with the opposition asking the government whether it expects Mumbaikars to make a long jump in their vehicles to reach the other flyover.

One arm of the important Gokhale Bridge, which connects Andheri East and West, was thrown open to vehicular traffic on Monday evening, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) calling it an architectural marvel and claiming that it was built over the “country’s busiest railway tracks” without disrupting local and long-distance train services. The BMC is currently run by an administrator, who reports to the state government.

A portion of the bridge had collapsed in 2018, killing two people, and it was demolished in 2022 to be reconstructed. Before it was taken apart, the bridge linked to the Barfiwala Flyover, which is used by traffic from the area to head towards Juhu and then proceed to key suburbs like Bandra.

When news of the Gokhale Bridge being opened surfaced, commuters welcomed the possibility of their travel time being cut short again. The joy gave way to shock, however, when it turned out that the Barfiwala Flyover was not joined because of the height difference and the bridge would not serve the purpose that a majority of vehicles used it for.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Attacking the Maharashtra government led by Eknath Shinde – who had split the Shiv Sena in 2022 and led to the toppling of the Uddhav Thackeray government – Shiv Sena (Udhhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Aaditya Thackeray said the height difference was a result of a corrupt regime and that the ministers had inaugurated a “half ready, embarrassingly delayed bridge”.

“Yes truly first in India, probably the world that the 2 bridges that were to be joined have a difference of 6 ft in height between the 2!” the former minister posted on X.

Team Uddhav leader Anand Dubey pointed out that the Gokhale Bridge had been shut for nearly 16 months, since November 2022, and was still misaligned.

“Is there no coordination between the BMC, the railways and the contractor? There is a height difference of 1.5 metres between the bridges. What does the government want? Do they expect Mumbaikars to make a long jump and reach the flyover? The state government is not only careless, but has also cheated Mumbaikars,” he alleged.

‘Railway Directive’

The Shinde faction of the Sena has, however, claimed that the misalignment occurred because of the Railways’ new policy, which necessitated raising the Gokhale Bridge by an additional 1.5 metres because it was being built over railway tracks.

“During the construction of the bridge, due to the new policy of the Railways, the height of the bridge had to be increased by 1.5 meters. When the bridge was first constructed, its design was prepared along with the Barfiwala Flyover. But because the height of the bridge was increased, the flyover is now below it. We will seek help from the IIT and the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) and construct a ramp if necessary,” said Team Shinde leader and local MLA  Amit Satam.

Sena Spokesperson Krishna Hegde said, “By December this year, all the improvements will be completed and the bridge will be completely opened.”

Commuters, however, aren’t convinced. “We had to endure long traffic jams because the bridge had been shut. It used to take five minutes to get from Andheri East to West but the duration went up to nearly an hour when the bridge was demolished. Now that the bridge has finally been constructed, they have made such a big mistake. Even if they construct a ramp, can it be done without closing off the bridge again,” asked a local resident.
