Bendable Phones

Hyderabad: All the news coming out from the Mobile World Congress 2024 being held in Barcelona, Spain is keenly being followed by gizmo enthusiasts from around the world.

Among all the interesting new developments from the international tech event, the news of tech giants Motorola and Samsung demonstrating their respective versions of ‘bendable phone’ prototypes stood out, giving glimpses into what future of smartphones could be.

Motorola has displayed a working prototype of the Adaptive Display concept it had revealed in October last year. The concept phone can fold like a wrist band. It can be worn around the wrist like a wrist watch. The prototype has a 6.9 inch flexible plastic-based pOLED display.

Samsung also displayed its foldable phone prototype that can be worn around the wrist. The company named it ‘OLED Cling Band’.  Like the Motorola prototype, the OLED Cling Band also sports a 6.9 inch screen.

Reports suggest that both the bendable phones when flat, look like regular smartphones. However, the  prototypes showcased at the MWC 2024 seem little impractical as of now as repeatedly bending the phones might result in small cracks on the flexible screen.

Implementation of the idea seems farfetched and the launch of these phones may not be anytime soon.

German warship opens fire on US Reaper drone: Reports

File photo of an American MQ-9 Reaper drone

A German warship partaking in a European anti-Yemen coalition in the Red Sea has mistakenly opened fire on an American MQ-9 Reaper drone, reports say.

German media outlets carried the reports on Monday, describing the attack as a friendly fire incident.

According to Germany’s Der Spiegel weekly, the warship fired two missiles at the aircraft, but both the projectiles crashed into the sea because of “a technical defect.”

The “Hesse” frigate involved in the incident headed towards the Red Sea earlier this month as means of thwarting Yemen’s pro-Palestine operations.

Yemen’s Armed Forces have been targeting Israeli vessels or those bound for the occupied territories’ ports in protest at the Israeli regime’s October-present war against the Gaza Strip that has so far killed nearly 30,000 Palestinians.

The forces have vowed to keep up the operations as long as the Israeli regime sustained the war and a simultaneous siege that it has been employing against Gaza.

The German warship opened fire after efforts to identify an unknown drone “were unsuccessful,” Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said, adding that the target was “not hit.” The aircraft later turned out to be a “reconnaissance drone,” he said.

The drone was apparently not related to a United States-led naval coalition that has been similarly operating in the Red Sea to confront the Yemeni operations.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper said it was “common knowledge that American combat drones are used in the region that have nothing to do with the [US-led] operation in the Red Sea.”

Spiegel said military officials believed that the incident showed that coordination between allies involved in various missions in the region around Yemen “needs to be improved.”

Himachal Pradesh: BJP Legislative Party members meet Governor

Shimla: Members of the BJP Legislative Party led by Jai Ram Thakur on Wednesday met Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, a day after the party won the lone Rajya Sabha seat in the state.

The meeting comes amid a buzz over the BJP bringing a motion of no-confidence in the assembly against the Congress government in the state.

The Congress has 40 MLAs while the BJP has 25 in the 68-member state assembly, the Budget session of which begins today. The remaining three seats are held by independents.

On Tuesday, Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania did not allow division of votes in cut motions pertaining to the health department and “we have come here to appraise the governor of the situation”, Thakur told reporters before meeting the governor.

He alleged that the marshals misbehaved with and manhandled BJP members when they were going towards the chamber of the speaker to register their protest. The BJP won the Rajya Sabha seat with its candidate Harsh Mahajan defeating Congress stalwart Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

The voting was a tie with both the Congress and the BJP candidates getting 34 votes, indicating that six Congress MLAs voted against the party. The result was then declared on the basis of a draw of lots. Following the result, sources in the opposition party had said members of the BJP Legislature Party led by the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Thakur, would meet the governor and demand a floor test, claiming that the Congress government has lost majority in the House.

French Senate Votes To Make Abortion A Constitutional "Freedom"

French Senate Votes To Make Abortion A Constitutional 'Freedom'

The upper chamber voted by 267 votes to 50 to back the constitutional change

Paris:

France’s Senate on Wednesday backed a government move to enshrine the “freedom” to have an abortion in the constitution which will now be voted on at a special congress.

President Emmanuel Macron last year pledged to put the right to terminate a pregnancy — which has been legal in France since 1974 — into the constitution after the US Supreme Court in 2022 overturned the half-century-old right to the procedure, allowing states to ban or curtail abortion.

Despite opposition from some conservative members, the upper chamber voted by 267 votes to 50 to back the constitutional change.

The lower-house National Assembly overwhelmingly voted in favour of making abortion a “guaranteed freedom” in January, with almost all members of Macron’s centrist minority coalition as well as left-wing opposition parties approving it.

Macron said he would call a special Congress session of the two chambers at Versailles palace on Monday for a final vote. Macron welcomed what he called a “decisive step” by the Senate in his announcement on X, the former Twitter.

Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti said France was on the verge of a “historic day” when it becomes “the first country in the world to protect in its constitution the freedom of women” to decide what happens to their bodies.

The plan faced some opposition from right-wing senators and the government chose the expression “guaranteed freedom” as an apparent compromise between both houses.

The lower house in 2022 had approved enshrining the “right” to an abortion, while the Senate last year was in favour of adding the “freedom” to resort to the procedure.

However, before the full vote, a Senate committee on Wednesday rejected motions from the right to amend the text of the proposed revision.

In private several right-wing senators said they felt under pressure to approve the change.

“If I vote against it, my daughters will no longer come for Christmas,” said one woman senator who asked to remain anonymous.

A survey by French polling company IFOP in November 2022 found 86 percent of French people supported making abortion a constitutional right.

Only Way BJP Can Get 2 Digits In Kerala If It's Two Zeroes: Shashi Tharoor

Only Way BJP Can Get Two Digits In Kerala If It's Two Zeroes: Shashi Tharoor

File photo

Thiruvananthapuram:

Arguing that the BJP’s vote share in Kerala has reached its saturation point, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor dismissed the prospect of the party doing better in the upcoming Lok Sabha election on Wednesday.

“I am afraid the only way they can get two digits is if it is two zeroes. The issue with the BJP is that they don’t understand Kerala’s history and culture. Communalism cannot go beyond a small limit here,” Mr Tharoor told the news agency ANI.

“I give Narendra Modi credit for taking a 6 per cent party to a 12-13 per cent party but that is it. The ceiling has been reached. We know they tried to reach out to the Christian community, but after the horrors of Manipur, it won’t work,” he added.

BJP has been wooing the Christian community, with the Prime Minister himself having met Christian religious leaders from the state multiple times, both in Delhi and Kerala, during his visit there.

The Christian community has a significant presence in the Central Travancore area of the state, and their vote is said to be significant in winning in any of the constituencies there.

Talking about his candidature in the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency, Mr Tharoor said, “The congress party has not yet announced any candidature nor has it told any of us that we will not be contesting. Whatever I am doing is working as a sitting MP. I have responsibilities to my constituency, which I am doing now.”

Reacting to the crisis faced by the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu government in Himachal Pradesh after cross-voting by some of the Congress MLAs in the recently held Rajya Sabha, Mr Tharoor said the political development there was “disappointing.”

“It’s a really disappointing development in a democracy that a government elected less than a year ago with a 40-25 clear majority can be subverted in this way in an undemocratic manner. We know the BJP is extremely well funded, but it’s a misuse of both money and muscle power by the BJP,” Mr Tharoor asserted.

On being asked about the ongoing political turmoil within Himachal Pradesh’s Congress unit, Mr Tharoor said, “I am waiting for more details. I can’t comment beyond what I have read in the headlines, where I think it’s a betrayal of the people’s mandate. Every time the BJP does something like this. In the past, they have done it in 4-5 states. It’s a real assault on democracy,” he added.

Cross-voting by six Congress MLAs for the lone Rajya Sabha seat and the resignation of Vikramaditya Singh from the council of ministers plunged the Sukhu-led government into a crisis in the hill state.

The back-to-back developments brought to the fore the rift within the ruling party while the BJP claimed the Congress had lost the moral standing to be in power after losing the majority in the Assembly.

The BJP said the Rajya Sabha results show that the Sukhu-led Congress government has lost its majority, whereas the CM has claimed to remain in power with a majority.

LoP Jairam Thakur earlier said that the state CM should resign from his post on moral grounds.

“Congress does not have a majority, and they cannot pass the budget, so they suspended 15 BJP MLAs without any reason. They will now try to pass the budget, but it will be against the rules. If he (CM Sukhu) has even a little bit of morality left, then he should resign…” he said.

He further said that the action of the Assembly Speaker, Kuldeep Singh Pathania, to suspend 15 BJP MLAs is ‘condemnable’.

Biden Is "Fit For Duty": Doctor After His Last Annual Medical Before US Election

Biden Is 'Fit For Duty': Doctor After His Last Annual Medical Before US Election

The annual examination came weeks after a special counsel portrayed Joe Biden as elderly and forgetful

Washington:

US President Joe Biden remains “fit for duty” with no new health worries, his doctor said Wednesday after the 81-year-old’s last medical ahead of an election in which his age is a key issue.

The keenly awaited annual examination at the Walter Reed military medical center outside Washington came just weeks after a special counsel report that portrayed him as elderly and forgetful.

“He continues to be fit for duty and fully executes all of his responsibilities without any exemptions or accommodations,” White House doctor Kevin O’Connor said in a summary.

The only new issue this year was Biden’s use of a machine to keep his airways clear at night and reduce sleep disruption, along with an emergency dental procedure, O’Connor said after the examination.

Biden suffers from a range of minor physical issues including a stiff walk due to wear and tear in his spine but there was no significant change in them from last year, the report said.

Biden, who faces a likely rematch with 77-year-old Donald Trump in November, himself joked that the only concern was that doctors “think I look too young.”

“Everything’s great,” he told reporters at the White House.

Biden took a short helicopter ride to the medical center that is often used by US presidents and left after two and a half hours, saluting naval staff and donning sunglasses before leaving in his motorcade.

Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended Biden not taking a cognitive test, saying it was the assessment of his doctors that the president did not need one.

“The president passes again a cognitive test every day,” Jean-Pierre told reporters, citing the domestic and international political issues he dealt with. “This is a very rigorous job.”

Biden’s routine medical exam comes as voter concerns mount over the age of a leader who would be 86 at the end of a second term in office.

The issue was thrust further into the spotlight by the special counsel report.

It cleared him of illegally retaining classified documents in his home and garage — but said he would come across to a jury as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

Biden launched a fiery counterattack in a press conference at the White House, saying his memory was “fine” and slamming the special counsel for claiming he could not remember when his son Beau died of cancer.

But this week Biden took a more lighthearted tone while trying to deflect the issue back onto his septuagenarian nemesis Trump.

In an interview with late-night TV comic Seth Meyers on Monday, Biden said he was a better bet than “the other guy,” who is only four years younger.

In last year’s medical exam, Biden got a clean bill of health, although he did have a cancerous skin lesion removed from his chest.

Trump routinely depicts Biden as pathetically old, decrepit and unfit for office — despite being nearly the same age and raising eyebrows with a series of verbal gaffes and memory issues of his own.

The real estate tycoon recently confused his rival Republican Nikki Haley with Democratic former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, and said Viktor Orban was president of Turkey, rather than Hungary.

Late last year, Trump released a note from his doctor declaring him to be in “excellent” health, but it was short on details and did not say what tests Trump had undergone when he had a physical in September 2023.

The letter said the results of his cognitive exams were “exceptional” but did not disclose basic information such as Trump’s height and weight, cholesterol level or blood pressure.

Supreme Court Approves Rajasthan Government's Two-Child Rule

New Delhi:

People with more than two children will not be eligible for government jobs in Rajasthan — this 1989 law of the state has now got the Supreme Court’s seal of approval.

The rule is non-discriminatory, the judges said, hearing a petition challenging it.

It falls within the purview of policy and there is “no need to interfere with it,” said the bench of Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Dutta and KV Vishwanathan, in an order on February 20.

The bench upheld the decision of Rajasthan High Court of October 12, 2022, and dismissed the petition of former soldier Ramji Lal Jat.

After retirement from defence services in January 2017, the soldier had applied for the post of a constable in Rajasthan Police in May 2018.

But his application was rejected under the Rajasthan Police Subordinate Service Rules, 1989, as he had more than two children after 1 June 2002.

The court said it had earlier approved similar rules – meant to promote family planning — for contestants of Panchayat elections.
