US sanctions 3 entities, 1 individual for links with Iran

These entities have generated hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of revenue from selling Iranian commodities, including to the Syrian government,” the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement.

"He's Better Than Me": Sarfaraz Khan As Brother Takes U19 World Cup By Storm

After scoring truckloads of runs on the domestic circuit, Sarfaraz Khan finally earned his maiden India call-up as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) added him to the roster for the second Test against England. Sarfaraz’s maiden call-up came as a result of injuries to KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja. But, as the uncapped star prepares for the second Test against England in Vizag, he revealed looking up to his younger brother, who is making waves for India in Under-19 cricket, during tough times.

Sarfaraz, in fact, admitted that his brother Musheer is a batter batter than him. Musheer famously scored a century against Ireland in the ongoing U19 World Cup in South Africa, leaving Sarfaraz in awe of his technique.

“He’s a better batter than me. I’m not saying this because he’s my brother. Sometimes, I may be struggling, but watching his technique and trying to work out what he’s doing would give me confidence. His mannerisms, bat flow is very good. Sometimes when I’m not batting well, I look at him and learn,” Sarfaraz told ESPNcricinfo.

“If I batted 300 balls, Musheer would bat for 300 balls even if he’d done a lot of bowling. Our middle brother, Moin, would do the throwdowns. Having two cricketers in the house, he decided to switch to training,” Sarfaraz said.

Inside Sarfaraz’s family, there’s a lot of healthy competition, with him and Musheer looking to outdo each other. The comparison even comes down to different shots, with Sarfaraz suggesting that his sweep shot is better than Musheer’s but when it comes to reverse-sweep, the younger brother has a better technique.

“Musheer’s reverse sweep is better than mine. Sweep, I think mine is better, since I have better judgment that has come from experience. We always want the other to do better. Now when he bowls and I bat, there’s a lot of healthy competition,” he added.

Explained: How Imran Khan's Conviction Will Influence Pakistan Elections

Explained: How Imran Khan's Conviction Will Influence Pakistan Elections

Karachi:

Pakistan – Former Pakistani Prime Minister and cricket star Imran Khan was jailed for 14 years on Wednesday on charges of illegally selling state gifts, a day after he received a 10-year sentence for leaking state secrets.

The convictions come days before a national election scheduled for Feb. 8.

Here are some facts on how these sentences influence his political future, his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, and the upcoming election:

– Imran Khan, 71, was already barred from holding public office for five years following an earlier graft conviction, which ruled him out of next week’s polls.

– Wednesday’s sentence extends that ban on Imran Khan from holding public office to 10 years, which means he could not be Prime Minister again until 2034.

– The convictions also mean Imran Khan, in jail since August, will not be able to come out of jail to campaign for his party’s candidates in the election.

– Imran Khan’s absence has already left his party in disarray, with many key aides jailed, on the run, or having abandoned him in the face of a spate of legal challenges.

– There are a number of candidates backed by Imran Khan and his party that are contesting next week’s election, but there are no big political names to carry his party in his absence.

– Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is temporarily being led by a little-known lawyer, Gohar Ali Khan, who is also Imran Khan’s legal counsel.

– On Jan. 14, Imran Khan’s party was stripped of its traditional electoral symbol of a cricket bat in a court ruling, which means his candidates are contesting as independents.

– Even if Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-backed candidates win, as independents they are not bound to stay with the party and are open to joining other parties – and Imran Khan remaining in jail for the foreseeable future increases the chances of this.

– The support of victorious independent candidates in the aftermath of the polls will be crucial for any party vying to secure the numbers necessary in parliament to form a government.

Court Sets Aside Visva-Bharati's Eviction Order To Amartya Sen

Court Sets Aside Visva-Bharati's Eviction Order To Amartya Sen

Amartya Sen’s lawyer contended that the eviction order was passed in an arbitrary manner (File)

Suri, West Bengal:

A court in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Wednesday set aside an order of eviction issued by Visva-Bharati on Nobel laureate Amartya Sen from a plot of land in Santiniketan.

The court of Birbhum district judge Sudeshna De (Chatterjee) held that Amartya Sen, who had appealed against the order of eviction issued by the estate officer of the university, and his father, the late Asutosh Sen, had been in continuous possession of the entire 1.38 acres of land since the grant of lease in 1943.

The court set aside the eviction order of April 19, 2023 on Amartya Sen from 13 decimals of land out of a total of 1.38 acres of land at Santiniketan.

The court noted that the university authorities claimed they became aware only in October, 2006 that a lease had been given for 1.25 acres of land when Amartya Sen filed an application for mutation in respect of 1.38 acres of land, but surprisingly action was taken in the form of issuing notices, including statutory notice, only in 2023.

She observed that a notice of March 17, 2023 as well as subsequent action taken by the university asking Amartya Sen for showing cause and ordering his eviction from 13 decimals of land under his occupation are erroneous and not in accordance with law and thus not legally sustainable.

In the 26-page judgement, the court observed that neither in three notices nor in the statutory notice, specific demarcation of the portion of land alleged to be illegally held by Amartya Sen had been described showing its measurement.

Holding that it is an admitted fact that the appellant is staying abroad, the court said that notices were sAmartya ent for a survey of the property, but without affording any opportunity of a hearing and without conducting any survey of the land, the order of eviction was passed.

“It is very surprising to note that the university which slumbered over the issue without taking any effective measures according to law for 80 years, refused to give five months time to the appellant, who wanted the same to meet the queries as he was abroad,” she observed.

The judge held that the act of the university was against the rule of natural justice.

Amartya Sen’s lawyer contended before the court that the eviction order was passed in an arbitrary manner violating the principle of natural justice.

It was claimed in the appeal that it was only after Amartya Sen had made comments about some incidents in Visva-Bharati, the university authorities being annoyed, issued the notices of eviction.

The university authorities stated that the 99-year lease deed on October 27, 1943 in favour of the late Asutosh Sen, the father of Amartya Sen, was executed for 1.25 acres of land.

The estate officer claimed that it was found that the appellant was unauthorisedly occupying 13 decimals of land in excess of his entitlement.

Dalit Bandhu accounts put on hold in Karimnagar

Dalit Bandhu beneficiaries said the new State government had reportedly issued orders to “freeze” their accounts due to lack of money

Dalit Bandhu accounts put on hold in Karimnagar

Karimnagar: Several Dalit Bandhu accounts in the district have reportedly been put on hold leaving beneficiaries in a dilemma. Unable to do transactions, the beneficiaries have been running frantically from banks to the SC Corporation office and back during the last one month. The beneficiaries said the new State government had reportedly issued orders to “freeze” their accounts due to lack of money. However, officials said the accounts were temporarily “put on hold” since a few beneficiaries had made attempts to withdraw the interest amount by adding other accounts to the existing Dalit Bandhu accounts.

The Dalit Bandhu scheme, launched in Huzurabad mandal in 2021, the scheme had 18,021 beneficiaries from different mandals here including Huzurabad municipality (1,623), Huzurabad rural (2,720), Jammikunta municipality (2,264) Jammikunta rural (2,358), Veenavanka (3,009) and Ellandakunta (2,116) and 3,931 from Kamalapur of Hanamkonda district in the first phase.

A sum of Rs 10 lakh was sanctioned to beneficiaries who selected big units such as passenger transport vehicles, supermarkets, tractors, excavators and so on. Beneficiaries who chose smaller units were sanctioned Rs 5 lakh in the first phase. The second phase amount of Rs 5 lakh was later deposited in their accounts.

However, with some beneficiaries not starting to operate their units, the money was still there in their bank accounts, which they could not withdraw without approval from officials. For some, the second installment too was there in the account. The interest amount for the last two years was also added to the principal amount, following which a few beneficiaries tried to withdraw the interest amount. Knowing about this, the District Collector on December 13 instructed bankers to put these accounts on hold.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Mogili, a beneficiary from Dharmaram of Jammikunta mandal, said that in the first phase, he had purchased four buffaloes spending Rs 6 lakh. Out of the four, one buffalo died due to weather conditions. He then decided to purchase a few more buffaloes to add the existing three. But the bank authorities were asking for a letter from the officials to withdraw the amount, he said.

SC Corporation Executive Director Nagarjuna asked the beneficiaries not to worry since the entire amount was still there in their bank accounts. Some beneficiaries made an attempt to withdraw the interest amount by adding other accounts to their Dalit Bandhu accounts with the help of a mobile app, following which the accounts were frozen temporarily, he said.

On the other hand, some of the beneficiaries have not got the second installment either. About 1,500 to 2,000 beneficiaries, who have not got the second installment, are now running after district officials to get their money sanctioned.
