Telangana: Discoms likely to seek increase in power tariff from next fiscal

Hyderabad: With the Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TSERC) reportedly asking State-run power utilities to submit proposals for determination of the Aggregate Revenue Requirement (ARR) by January 31, speculation is rife that the State government may allow Discoms to increase the power tariff during the financial year 2024-25 to reduce their debts.

Sources said it would be very difficult for the power utilities to sustain if the power tariff was not increased as the debts were growing each day. In case the Congress government decides not to increase the tariff, it will have to give over Rs.25,000 crore as annual subsidy to the Discoms to pay debts and purchase power, the sources said, adding that the government had allocated Rs.11,000 crore to Discoms during the current fiscal as subsidy and repayments.

Taking in consideration the current financial health of the Discoms, it looks like Discoms would be seeking an increase in the tariff to overcome the financial crisis. The discoms have recently submitted proposals to the TSERC seeking permission to collect a surcharge of Rs.1.95 per unit from consumers who buy and use electricity from open access from April 1 to September 20. On February 9, the ERC will hold a public hearing in this regard.

Discoms have to submit ARR proposals to the ERC by November 30 before revision of electricity charges at the beginning of every financial year, but last year the then government could not do so due to the assembly election on November 30. Discoms were reportedly asked to submit the ARR by January 2, but since they failed to do so, the ERC has once again asked it to submit the ARR by January 31.

The ERC will conduct a public hearing on the submitted ARR within 120 days and give a verdict on the revision of charges by March 31. Based on this, from April 1, discoms will have the power to increase electricity charges.

In November 2022, the two Telangana State Power Distribution Companies TSSPDCL and TSNPDCL did not propose any increase in the retail supply tariff for the year 2023-24 by submitting the existing tariff as part of filing their ARRs with the TSERC for the next financial year, hence there was no increase in tariff during the current fiscal.

With the new Congress government decided to continue free power to agriculture sector, weaker sections and trade based castes and also making efforts to launch the Gruha Jyothi Scheme, under which the government proposes to provide 200 units of electricity free of cost every household in the State, there is lot of pressure on power utilities to meet the demand.

The State government tabled a White Paper on the financial health of the power sector in the State assembly revealing that the Discoms had debts of Rs.81,516 crore and the accumulated losses of Discoms increasing to Rs.62,461 crore as on October 31 last year.

Loading, unloading of goods in Amirabad port increases by 47%

The loading and unloading operation of goods at the port in that period registered a 47% growth compared to last year’s corresponding period, Mohammad Ali Mousapour stated.

With the infrastructures constructed in the field of storing grains, it is expected that a new record will be registered at the port by the yearend (March 20, 2024) in the field of loading and unloading goods, he stated.

Turning to the 59% share of the port in sea trade at the Caspian Sea, Mousapour said import of goods at this port has witnessed considerable growth with the investment made by the private sector in the field of constructing silos and covered storage and also the situation of Amirabad Port in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

It is expected that the export of products from this port will grow following the creation of a green customs line between Amirabad and Makhachkala Port, he went on to say.

"Brij Bhushan's Propaganda": Sakshi Malik As Wrestlers Protest Against Her

'Brij Bhushan's Propaganda': Sakshi Malik As Wrestlers Protest Against Her

Young wrestlers held a protest against Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat on Wednesday

New Delhi:

Former India wrestler and Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik on Wednesday accused the wrestlers protesting against her and other veteran wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia of running propaganda against them for former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Singh.

Young wrestlers held a protest against veteran grapplers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat on Wednesday, accusing them of putting all wrestling-related activities to a halt and ruining the future of children pursuing the sport.

“I have given years of my life to wrestling and retired recently so you can tell how stressed I am mentally. There is an IT cell of Brij Bhushan on social media. These protestors are his people and running propaganda for him. Brij Bhushan was making allegations against us earlier too during the protest,” said Sakshi to the media in a press conference.

Sakshi went on to clarify that they did not have any problem with the newly elected federation, except for the president Sanjay Singh. She also went on to say that she welcomes the suspension of newly-elected federation by the Union Sports Ministry.

The wrestler also accused Brij Bhushan of targeting her family.

“We only had a problem with Sanjay Singh. We do not have any problem with the new federation body or the Ad-hoc committee. I request PM Modi ji, and Amit Shah ji to ensure that Sanjay Singh has no involvement in WFI. It is the responsibility of the government to ensure our safety. Brij Bhushan (BJP leader & former WFI chief) is targeting my family,” said Sakshi.

Sakshi said that even though she is retiring, she wants the wrestlers who will play in her 58 kg category to secure a gold or silver in the Paris 2024 Olympics and outdo her bronze medal in the 2016 Olympics.

“I request the ad-hoc committee to hold nationals and camps for U15, U17, U20 categories. No youngster should face any issues,” she added.

Sakshi said that it would be great for women wrestlers if women are given some responsibilities in the federation.

“I cannot say that I will step into administration. But If there are some women in the federation, it would be good for women wrestlers, Women wrestlers will be able to go and express themselves freely,” she said.

The ad hoc committee for the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Monday announced it would host the National Coaching Camp for Senior Wrestlers in preparation for the forthcoming Asian Olympics qualifying and World qualifying tournament.

Along with this, the committee has scheduled the Senior National Championships for wrestling.

The decision was announced following a press release by the ad hoc committee. The senior National Championships will take place from February 2 to 5 in Jaipur and will be orchestrated by the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB).

The tournament will include competitions across senior freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s categories, providing a comprehensive platform for wrestlers to showcase their talent.

After the conclusion of the Senior National Championships, the National Coaching Camp (NCC) will be conducted.

The men’s camp (encompassing Greco-Roman and free style) will be held at SAI NRC Sonepat, while the women’s camp will be held at SAI NSNIS Patiala. The NCC will select medalist wrestlers from 30 weight divisions across the senior freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s categories of the Senior National Championships.

The coaching camp will begin on February 9, 2024, and extend until the Paris Olympics in 2024. The primary focus of the NCC will be rigorous training for the upcoming Olympic qualifying tournaments.

These qualifying tournaments include the 2024 Asian Qualification Tournament set to be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, from April 19-21, and the 2024 World Qualification Tournament scheduled for Istanbul, Turkey, from May 9-12, 2024.

Additionally, the NCC will prepare athletes for the Senior Asian Championships, which are slated to take place in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, from April 11-16, 2024.

The Union Sports Ministry had earlier suspended the sport’s premier governing body in the country along with all its office-bearers, including the newly-elected president Sanjay Singh.

At the same time, following its decision, the Ministry instructed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to form an ad hoc committee to manage and control the affairs of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Yearender: How Has Foreign Education Changed Over Years

Yearender: How Has Foreign Education Changed Over Years

New Delhi:

Foreign education underwent major overhaul in the recent years due to factors such as pandemic, high inflation in most countries, wars in Ukraine and the Middle East and general political and economic instability. Because of the shift, many courses have become obsolete in the current times while many others were newly introduced.

Abizer Merchant, director (India and Sri Lanka) at Macquarie University highlights that courses related to health, cyber security, IT, business analytics, environmental studies and psychology have been popular in recent times. Besides these, demand for management and engineering continues to be good.

Lakshmi Iyer, managing director, SI-UK India notes, “Covid-19 and global conflicts have acted as a wake-up call to many and because of this students are showing more interest in choosing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses. Another reason for a rising trend in pursuing STEM programmes is the intersection among different fields, resulting in new and more specified disciplines.”

For instance, she adds, technology is being used in areas like studying biology resulting in a specialised field called bioinformatics; data sciences which is about handling big data, cyber-security which is about protecting online information and data or bio robotics which is about studying and creating robotic systems for biology are in great demand now.

Ms Iyer further adds that during the pandemic students liked learning online about things like Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing, big data analytics, and digital encryption. There was a surge in enrolment for short-term courses on mental well-being, foreign languages, and art related courses. “Even though the pandemic is done, tech courses continue to be in demand but students now like to learn in different ways,” she adds.

Talking about the changes in the mode of imparting education in the post Covid period, Mr Abizer says, “Many universities are now offering most of their courses on campus and in face-to-face format which is supplemented with online material or short videos to enhance the classroom learning. However, some courses are offered in both online and offline format (or a blend of both) especially where the demand is from working professionals who are unable to travel or commit to full time study.”

On countries that have gained significance in the post covid period, Mr Abizer says, “All major study destinations such as Australia, US, UK, Germany, Canada have seen an increase in enrolments from Indian students over the past two years. On the other hand, students travelling to Russia, China and Ukraine for medical and health programs would have seen a decline in enrolments.”

Israeli soldiers kidnapped infant, other children: Euro-Med

Expressing concern over the alarming kidnapping of children and the unexplained disappearance of numerous Palestinian detainees from the Strip, Euro-Med Monitor emphasized the need for the international community to fulfill its obligations and exert pressure on “Israel” to guarantee their safe return, the Lebanese al-Mayadeen news site reported.

The organization based in Geneva emphasized its grave concern over the details released by Israeli Army Radio on January 1, 2024.

According to the report, Israeli officer Harel Itach, a Givati Brigade commander, allegedly kidnapped a Palestinian infant from her family home in Gaza following the killing of her family members. The specific date of the incident was not disclosed, but the organization underscored the significance of taking this information seriously.

After learning about the Israeli officer’s death on December 22, 2023, due to injuries sustained in the Gaza war, a close associate of Itach revealed the alleged kidnapping incident. The friend disclosed that the whereabouts of the Palestinian baby remains unknown.

Euro-Med Monitor cited numerous testimonies it has received, indicating a pattern where the Israeli army reportedly detains and relocates Palestinian children without providing information about their whereabouts.

It is worth mentioning that earlier on Tuesday the Palestinian Authority’s Foreign Ministry condemned the “kidnapping” of a Palestinian infant girl by an Israeli officer in the Gaza Strip, calling on the occupation to release her.

Additionally, Euro-Med Monitor has been receiving distressing reports from numerous Palestinian families who have lost communication with their children. The organization highlighted that these reports predominantly originate from regions experiencing Israeli ground incursions.

Euro-Med Monitor emphasized that the threat of Israeli soldiers forcibly relocating and disappearing children is escalating. This concern is particularly pronounced as hundreds of Palestinian families have reported the disappearance of one or more of their children.

On that note, numerous displaced families from northern Gaza or the raided areas of Khan Younis have reported the heartbreaking loss of their children during evacuations or home bombings.

Based on preliminary estimates, Euro-Med suggested that over 3,000 individuals, among them 200 women and young girls, have been apprehended by Israeli forces. These Palestinians are being held in detention, a clear violation of international law, and there is a lack of official information regarding the charges they face or the conditions under which they are being held.

Important to forget what’s happened in the past. We understand the importance of getting runs on the board, and getting 20 wickets. IND vs SA Live Score: Here’s what Dean Elgar said at the toss

Going to bat. Pitch looks interesting. We’re in a great position. Can’t win a two-match series if you don’t win the first – we’ve crossed that hurdle. Scoreboard starts on nought. We all know that. Starting well is going to be key against this Indian side. Got a debutant in Tristan Stubbs coming in for Temba. Ngidi comes in for Coetzee who’s also injured. And Maharaj comes in.
