RTC rental bus owners threaten strike if demands not met

Hyderabad: RTC rental bus owners are facing quite a few issues and they have announced to go on strike from January 5 if their demands are not addressed immediately.

This time it is the Maha Lakshmi scheme which is bothering the owners the most as it causing overcrowding and potential mileage issues.  Maha Lakshmi scheme offers free bus travel service in TSRTC for women in Telangana.

Another significant concern is related to insurance coverage. They fear that if bus limits are exceeded and accidents happen, they might face severe financial losses due to insufficient coverage.

The owners also didn’t take part in the recently held tender by TSRTC, calling for maintenance of rented buses.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified antibiotics into three groups that include Access, Watch and Reserve. The antibiotics under Watch group are the ones that have higher resistance potential and must be prioritized as key targets to monitor.

The NCDC survey indicated that the consumption of the antibiotics in the crucial Watch group has increased. “We observed that consumption of antibiotics ranged from 88.7 (2020) to 118.3 (2018) DDD/100-bed-days. Watch group of antibiotics were consumed more than the access group antibiotics in all the five years ranging from 51.8 to 72.7 DDD/100-bed-days with 2021 recording the highest proportion of Watch group consumption at 64 percent. Access group consumption ranged from 29.8 to 42.3 DDD per 100-bed-days with 2017 recording the highest proportion of Access group consumption at 43 percent,” it said.

Third generation cephalosporins were the highest consumed class of antibiotics across the years followed by combinations of beta-lactams and beta-lactamase inhibitors. Though the Reserve group antibiotics should be treated as ‘last resort’ options, the use of colistin, linezolid, and aztreonam in these sites is a matter of concern, the NCDC report on antibiotic usage said.

Members of a pro-Palestine group raised anti-Israel slogans outside the Newlands Cricket Stadium before the start of the second Test between India and South Africa on Wednesday and demanded the sacking of national U-19 skipper David Teeger for his comments in support of the Israeli Army. The small group of protestors displayed placards which read “Boycott, Apartheid Israel” and “Smash Apartheid Israel for a Six”. They also shouted slogans asking for an independent Palestine. Israel launched a military offensive in the Gaza Strip after the Hamas militant group attacked the Jewish nation on October 7 last year, killing 1,200 people.

The protestors outside the stadium also indulged in sloganeering against Teeger, the U-19 national skipper.

“David Teeger, you don’t deserve to captain our country,” shouted a protestor.

Teegar, during a speech at the Jewish Achiever Awards where he was conferred as the ‘Rising Star’, had said: “I’ve been awarded this award, and yes, I am now the rising star, but the true rising stars are the young soldiers in Israel.” The ceremony took place on October 22 last year.

According to an article in local website timeslive.com.za, a complaint was lodged by the Palestine Solidarity Alliance against 18-year-old Teeger. However, Cricket South Africa’s internal inquiry committee absolved him of any wrongdoing.

“The inquiry, chaired by advocate Wim Trengove SC, found Teeger had not contravened clause 1.5.2 of CSA’s Rules and Code of Conduct that governs ‘unbecoming or detrimental conduct which could bring them, CSA or the game of cricket into disrepute’,” article said.

Ad-Hoc Panel Announces Organisation Of U-15, U-20 Nationals

Representational Image.© AFP

The ad-hoc panel, managing wrestling affairs in the country, on Wednesday announced organisation of U15 and U20 National championships within six weeks, hours after junior wrestlers held a protest at Jantar Mantar and demanded dissolution of the IOA-constituted committee. The panel “acknowledged the concerns” of the young wrestlers who have been hit hard by the year-long protests by top India grapplers. Wrestling activities in the country have been hit hard following protests by the country’s top three grapplers — Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat — against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Neither the National camps nor the junior nationals have been held since January 2023.

Hundreds of junior wrestlers lost one full year due to the stalemate.

Bhupender Singh Bajwa, chairman of the three-member panel, assured the junior wrestlers that he would soon organise the sub junior and junior Nationals in Gwalior.

“The (ad-hoc) committee acknowledges the concerns raised by the young wrestlers (during the protest) and is committed to address the issues. The Committee is planning to organise the national championships for the U-15 and U-20 categories within the next six weeks at LNIPE, Gwalior,” Bajwa said in a statement.

“The ad-hoc committee reaffirms its full commitment to the growth and development of wrestling in India, fostering a culture of excellence and perseverance. The young wrestlers are advised to continue training and practising for these events,” added the statement.

The ad-hoc panel was set up on December 27 after the ministry suspended the newly-elected body under Sanjay Singh.

Two terrorist blasts in Iran’s Kerman leave at least 73 dead

Two terrorist blasts in Iran’s southeastern city of Kerman have left 73 people dead and 170 more injured, according to Iran’s Emergency Organization.

The explosions occurred near the burial site of martyred Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, where people had flocked to mark his fourth martyrdom anniversary.

Ambulances have rushed to the location.

According to IRNA, the first explosion occurred some 700 meters from the grave of General Soleimani and the second one about one kilometer away.

Tasnim news agency cited unnamed sources as saying that two bomb-laden suitcases that were detonated by remote control caused the explosions.

The first explosion occurred at 14:50 local time, and the second took place 15 minutes later.

Some people were injured during a crowd crush following the first explosion.

Officials say all the injured have been transferred to hospitals and the situation is under control.

General Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), and their companions were assassinated in a US drone strike authorized by then-US President Donald Trump near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.

Both commanders were highly revered across the Middle East because of their key role in fighting the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in the region, particularly in Iraq and Syria.

In less than a week after the attack, Iraqi lawmakers approved a bill that required the government to expel all US-led foreign forces from the country.

The IRGC also targeted the US-run Ain al-Asad base in Iraq’s western province of Anbar with a wave of missile attacks in retaliation for the assassination of General Soleimani.

Woman Finds Old Lottery Ticket While Cleaning House, Wins Rs 91 Lakh

Woman Finds Old Lottery Ticket While Cleaning House, Wins Over Rs 91 Lakh

Officials were amazed to find the ticket in pristine condition when it was submitted

People’s luck can change overnight and that’s exactly what happened with a woman in Germany. According to the New York Post, the woman who has not been named, recently stumbled across a 2-year-old lottery ticket while she was cleaning her house for Christmas. Notably, she played the Lotterie Super 6 in February 2021 but then forgot all about it.

While cleaning her home, she found the ticket in a desk drawer and ended up winning $110,000 (approximately Rs 91,61,449).

”I cannot believe it. It feels like rediscovering a forgotten treasure,” she exclaimed after the big win. The woman now wants to use the money for a vacation.

Lottery officials were amazed to find the ticket in pristine condition when it was submitted for verification. They also urged winners to come forward before the December 31, 2024 deadline, as more than $660,000 in winnings from 2021 have not yet been claimed in Saxony-Anhalt.

”This was the only six-figure winning amount that was currently open for such a long time,” Lotto-Toto Sachsen-Anhalt director Stefan Ebert explained.

A few months back, a Massachusetts man also won a $1 million lottery prize on a ticket that he said he lost months ago. According to Fox News, Khalil Soussa said he misplaced the instant game ticket and forgot about it until his hired house cleaner came across it while working in his home.

“[He] only recently discovered it was a big winner when his house cleaner found the ticket in a vase and presented it to him,” the press release shared.

Talking of big lottery wins, a woman from North Carolina collapsed on live television after it was announced that she became the first winner of Powerball Millionaire of 2024, New York Post reported. Overcome with shock and excitement, Pamela Bradshaw fell to the ground and later got back on her feet with the help of the host and her daughter during ‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’.

”Oh my god!” she screamed while hugging host Ryan Seacrest excitedly. ”I’m so blessed,” she added as her daughter tightly embraced her. Ms Bradshaw, who hails from Clinton, was one of the five Powerball players across the United States who was chosen to try their luck at winning $1 million.
