S Jaishankar also referred to improved ties in the Gulf region.

New Delhi:

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India started the “Neighbourhood First” policy as its relations with other countries are not transactional. Top quotes from the big interview

  • “Canada, for some years, has been giving space to extremists and terrorists in their politics. I believe this is a weakness in their politics. A lot of problems have happened there because of this. It should not have happened,” S Jaishankar said on the diplomatic row between the two countries over the killing Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
  • “India does not need to be scared of China and it has the capability and confidence to compete with the country. We are living in a competitive world and India should not assume that China will not try to influence its neighbours,” S Jaishankar said on China’s growing influence in India’s neighbourhood.
  • Mr Jaishankar explained the competitive world with an analogy and said, “This competition is natural. Which is why I use a sports analogy. In short, no one expects another team to go easy on you. Everyone tries to win. This is the mindset we need to have.”

  • “What I think is, in terms of culture, self-confidence, delivery, our way of thinking, if you count it all, then if we have to describe the concept in short, the word Bharat conveys the message,” he said, adding that “India is non-west but not anti-west.”
  • Speaking about the “Neighbourhood First” policy, S Jaishankar said, “Sri Lanka is an example of the neighbourhood policy… the world talked about Sri Lanka but India helped.”

The Fact Check Unit (FCU) of the Press Information Bureau has alerted people about a “fake” news claiming that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will introduce a policy mandating three-day week-offs in all companies. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the PIB’s fact-checking unit said that no such proposal has been put forth by the Finance Ministry.

“An image circulating on social media claims that the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will announce a 3-day week off policy in the next #Budget. This claim is #fake…No such proposal has been floated by the Ministry of Finance,” it said.

The misleading post had also asserted that employees will be required to work extended hours, ranging from 10 to 12 hours per day, for four days a week, starting July 1, 2024. Additionally, it suggested a potential decrease in cash in hand for employees, coupled with an increase in Provident Fund (PF) contributions.

RBI asks Paytm Payments Bank to stop almost all services after Feb 29

On March 11, 2022, the RBI had barred PPBL from onboarding new customers with immediate effect.

Mumbai:  In a major action against Paytm Payments Bank (PPBL), the Reserve Bank on Wednesday directed the lender to stop accepting deposits or top-ups in in customer accounts, wallets, FASTTags and other instruments after February 29.

However, any interest, cashbacks, or refunds may be credited back to customers anytime. The direction follows persistent non-compliances and continued material supervisory concerns, the central bank said in a statement.

On March 11, 2022, the RBI had barred PPBL from onboarding new customers with immediate effect. Paytm group firm PPBL did not offer any comments on the RBI’s direction against the bank.

“No further deposits or credit transactions or top ups shall be allowed in any customer accounts, prepaid instruments, wallets, FASTags, NCMC cards, etc. after February 29, 2024, other than any interest, cashbacks, or refunds which may be credited anytime,” the RBI said.

Further, withdrawal or utilisation of balances by its customers from their accounts, including savings bank accounts, current accounts, prepaid instruments, FASTags, and National Common Mobility Cards are to be permitted without any restrictions, up to their available balance.

“No other banking services, other than those … like fund transfers (irrespective of name and nature of services like AEPS, IMPS, etc), BBPOU and UPI facility should be provided by the bank after February 29, 2024,” it added.

RBI also said the ‘nodal accounts’ of One97 Communications Ltd and Paytm Payments Services are to be terminated at the earliest, in any case not later than February 29, 2024.

One97 Communications, which owns Paytm brand, holds a 49 per cent stake in Paytm Payments Bank Limited but classifies it as an associate of the company and not as a subsidiary.

Settlement of all pipeline transactions and nodal accounts (in respect of all transactions initiated on or before February 29, 2024) should be completed by March 15, 2024 and no further transactions would be permitted thereafter, RBI added.

Earlier, Indian Highways Management Company (IHMCL), the arm of NHAI, had barred Paytm Payments Bank from issuing fresh FASTags after it found that Paytm Payments Bank was not following the parameters prescribed in the service-level agreement.

What About Holidays? S Jaishankar Explains How It's Like To Work With PM

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar says staying fit is key to surviving a busy schedule

New Delhi:

An old viral post by Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s extremely tight work schedule, from his official visits abroad to how many hours he sleeps and meetings he attends in how much time, has now been explained with more details by the Foreign Minister in an interview to NDTV.

So how does an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer manage holidays – or find time to play golf – when working with such a boss?

“First of all, I don’t play golf,” Mr Jaishannkar told NDTV, and smiled.

“In a way it’s just an image, that diplomats do these things… You have to find different ways of taking a break. We are not machines,” Mr Jaishankar said.

“You have to stay physically fit. In a year I go abroad some 30-40 times. Forget other things, the least you need is fitness. You get down from a plane, and the next day you are again going somewhere far,” he said.

“Every morning, I spend an hour either playing squash, badminton, if not by stretching. I do something at least that keeps me fit. I listen to music, reading. For me, I have always been interested in the world. That’s why I joined the foreign service. Travel also in a way is calming, and you observe many things,” Mr Jaishankar said.

“But going for a holiday for a week or two, that’s not possible in Modi sarkar. We knew it from the start. It is not only the situation for ministers. Even when I was a secretary it was not possible to take leave for many days. So you have to find different ways of handling things. Sometimes, people tell me ‘I saw you on TV, you looked tired’. What can I say? If you’re jet-lagged, you look like that,” he said.

India’s foreign policy has fully transformed in the past 10 years under PM Modi, and there are many markers in the journey so far that highlight this face, Mr Jaishankar told NDTV.

He has just published a book, ‘Why Bharat Matters’, which he said acknowledged the word “Bharat” as a “mindset”, an “approach”.

Japan beat Bahrain to reach Asian Cup quarterfinals

Kaoru Mitoma returned as Japan survived a second-half wobble to set up an Asian Cup quarter-final with Iran or Syria after a 3-1 win over Bahrain on Wednesday.

The four-time champions looked to be cruising in their last 16 game in Doha after goals either side of half-time from Ritsu Doan and Takefusa Kubo, AFP reported.

But an own goal from error-prone goalkeeper Zion Suzuki let Bahrain back in the game until Ayase Ueda restored Japan’s cushion just under 10 minutes later.

It was Ueda’s fourth goal of the tournament.

Japan were boosted by the return of Brighton winger Mitoma, who came off the bench in the second half to play his first game since injuring his ankle on December 21.

But questions remain for Hajime Moriyasu’s side, who were the pre-tournament favourites but have yet to keep a clean sheet in four games in Qatar.

Japan came close to opening the scoring in the 10th minute when Ueda thumped a header towards goal from a corner, only for Bahrain goalkeeper Ebrahim Lutfallah to claw it away.

Bahrain also had chances to take the lead but it was Japan who struck first in the 31st minute.

Right-back Seiya Maikuma unleashed a shot from distance that cannoned against the post and Doan reacted fastest to stick home the rebound.

Japan were forced into a change when Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate went off injured five minutes later, with Hidemasa Morita coming on.

Kubo doubled Japan’s lead in the 49th minute after a VAR goal check.

Bodies of 30 Palestinians found in bags at Beit Lahia school: Report

The bodies of 30 Palestinians have been discovered from under rubble at a school ground in the city of Beit Lahia, the northern Gaza Strip, a report says.

Al Jazeera Arabic reported on Wednesday that the Khalifa bin Zayed elementary school witnessed the discovery following the withdrawal of Israeli troops.

There were black body bags tied with plastic cables bearing Hebrew writing, the report said.

When the Palestinians were killed is unknown.

The school served as a shelter for thousands of displaced Palestinians before it was bombed and besieged by Israeli forces in early December.

The school had been funded by the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, known as UNRWA, since 2010.

The humanitarian crisis in the besieged Gaza Strip has reached catastrophic levels.

The United Nations warned in December that residents of Gaza are facing a growing threat of infectious diseases.

Israel has killed more than 26,500 people, most of them women and children, in Gaza since October 7, 2023. The regime was caught off-guard by the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm conducted by the Palestinian resistance fighters on that October day.
