Russian Aircraft Caused NATO Air Forces To Scramble Over 300 Times In 2023

NATO said its fighter jets are on duty around the clock (Representational)

Brussels:

NATO air forces were scrambled more than 300 times in response to Russian military aircraft in 2023, the treaty organisation said on Friday.

“The vast majority of aerial encounters between NATO and Russian jets were safe and professional. Breaches of NATO airspace by Russian military aircraft remained rare and generally of short duration,” NATO said, adding most intercepts occurred over the Baltic Sea.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February last year, NATO substantially reinforced its eastern flank air defences with more fighter jets, surveillance flights and ground-based air defences.

“NATO fighter jets are on duty around the clock, ready to scramble in case of suspicious or unannounced flights near the airspace of our Allies,” NATO spokesperson Dylan White said in a statement.

Earlier on Friday, Russia launched one of its biggest missile attacks on Ukraine of the war so far, killing 12 civilians, wounding dozens more and hitting residential buildings in Kyiv, the south and west of the country.

Tourists make beeline for Goa’s beaches to ring in new year

Panaji: Goa seems to be the preferred destination to ring in the new year, as tourists have been thronging the beaches and crowding hotels in the coastal state this holiday season. Lanes leading to beaches in Calangute, Candolim, Baga, and Vagator in North Goa have been witnessing traffic jams since December 25.

Hotels have witnessed more than 90 per cent occupancy this season and will reach full occupancy on December 31, said a senior official from the state tourism department. Goa has always been a preferred destination for New Year’s Eve celebrations, he said.

Considering the heavy footfall of tourists, the Goa police have formed special teams of the local police, crime branch and forensic experts to check the sale and consumption of narcotic substances at holiday parties.

Superintendent of Police (North) Nidhin Valsan said that the teams were carrying out strict checks along the coastal belt with the latest equipment to crack down on the sale and consumption of drugs.

The traffic police have also been deployed extensively along the routes leading to beaches to decongest them, he said. With the government busy ensuring an incident-free New Year’s Eve, domestic tourists enjoy the beaches.

Pragat Kumar Singh from Bengaluru, who is on his second visit to the state this year, said, “When it comes to the New Year celebrations, Goa tops the list. We want to make the best of our visit here.”

"Couldn't Believe": Brother Of J&K Civilian Who Died While In Army Custody

'Couldn't Believe': Brother Of J&K Civilian Who Died While In Army Custody

The Topi Pir village from where civilians were rounded up for questioning after the Poonch attack.

Srinagar:

An Army operation to track down the terrorists behind last week’s attack on two military vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir‘s Poonch district – in which four soldiers were killed – is over, without success.

The focus, now, as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh‘s Wednesday visit indicated, is on damage control following three civilian deaths, and injuries to others, after they were allegedly tortured while in Army custody. Mr Singh warned the Army it could not “make mistakes” that hurts an Indian citizen.

NDTV visited the heavily forested Rajouri-Poonch areas of J&K, which have become a hotbed of terror attacks in the past few months; last month, for example, two Army officers were among five soldiers killed in action and, in the last seven months, 20 soldiers have died in attacks in the region.

A narrow path running through the forests leads to the picturesque Topi Pir village, which bore the brunt of the Army’s recent counterterrorist op, one that that went badly wrong.

One of the three civilians who died while in Army custody was Safeer Ahmad, whose brother is Noor Ahmad, a Border Security Force constable. Safeer, survived by a wife and four children, was picked up by soldiers after the Poonch ambush, for which the People’s Anti-Fascist Front claimed responsibility.

Safeer Ahmad is survived by a wife and four children.

PAFF is believed to be a front organisation for the Jaish-e-Mohammed terror group, and was first seen in 2019, after the government revoked special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Noor Ahmad told NDTV he could not believe reports about his brother till he saw the body, which he said bore torture marks. “I didn’t believe it till I saw his body… couldn’t believe the Army will do something like this,” he said. On Wednesday, Noor and the family of the two other men who died met Rajnath Singh in Rajouri. Noor said Mr Singh had vowed the guilty soldiers will be punished.

“The Defence Minister told us those picked up and tortured were innocent people. He told us there can be no compensation for life… but that those responsible will be punished for their actions.”

The Army has ordered a formal inquiry into the horrific incident and, in an unprecedented step, removed the commander of a brigade and three others officers against whom charges were made.

Rajnath Singh, while addressing troops in the J&K region this week, urged the Army to not only defeat terrorism but also win the trust of the people, which has broken after violence against the civilians.

Mohammad Kabir worked as a porter in the same Army camp in which his brother, Shabir Ahmad, died. He told NDTV he would not now. “They called my brother on the phone and asked him come to the camp… now I will not go there and work as a porter for the Army… they killed my brother.”

Apart from the three who died, several others are injured, many with serious injuries, and are receiving treatment in local hospitals. A woman told NDTV her two teen sons are among the injured.

Senior BJP leaders, including the party’s J&K state unit boss, Ravinder Raina, and MP Ghulam Ali, visited the village and met the families of those killed. “I have come to offer condolences. Those guilty will get serve punishment because this is a major crime,” Mr Raina said.

Ghulam Ali, who is the BJPs nominated Rajya Sabha MP from J&K, and is also a Gujjar leader, said the government had noted the incident, and that police have also filed a murder case.

Mr Ali too seemed not to hold back in criticising the Army, though he did not refer to the military. “No words are enough to condemn the incident and way these people were killed,” he said.

However, no individual, Army or otherwise, has been named in the FIR.

The J&K administration, and even the centre, is undoubtedly in panic mode, particularly since a general election is now less than four months away and the Supreme Court has ordered that long-pending Assembly elections in J&K be held by September-end.

Noor regretted the fact this incident is “defaming” the country, and held that the soldiers responsible for ‘torturing and killing villagers” were as guilty of doing so as anybody else.

BJP To Project PM Modi As "Hindu Hriday Samrat" In 2024: Shashi Tharoor

BJP To Project PM Modi As 'Hindu Hriday Samrat' In 2024: Shashi Tharoor

He said Lok Sabha election is shaping up to be a Hindutva versus popular welfare battle (File)

New Delhi:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha polls on the issue of Hindutva by projecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the “Hindu Hriday Samrat”, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Friday.

In a post on X, Mr Tharoor noted that PM Modi is set to inaugurate the Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22 and the BAPS Hindu Temple in Abu Dhabi on February 14, following which the general election would be announced.

The Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram said the Lok Sabha election is shaping up to be a Hindutva versus popular welfare battle, and questions on economic growth, creating two crore jobs a year and putting disposable income into the pockets of every Indian need to be debated.

“The message is clear. In 2009, Mr Modi was sold to the Indian electorate as the avatar of economic development, the CEO of Gujarat Inc., who would bring development to all Indians. In 2019, with that narrative collapsing in the wake of the disastrous demonetisation, the Pulwama terrorist attack gave Mr Modi the opportunity to convert the general election into a national security election,” Mr Tharoor said.

“In 2024, it is clear the BJP will now revert to its core message and offer Narendra Modi to the nation as a Hindu Hriday Samrat,” he added.

“Hindu Hriday Samrat” literally translates to the emperor of Hindu hearts.

“All of this begs the question: what happened to achhe din? What happened to two crore jobs a year? What happened to economic growth that would benefit the lower rungs of the socio-economic ladder? What happened to putting disposable income into the pockets and bank accounts of every Indian?” the Congress leader asked.

“These questions will have to be debated in an election that is shaping up to be Hindutva versus popular welfare,” the former Union minister said.

ULFA To Be Disbanded, Says Amit Shah On Historic Peace Deal

ULFA To Be Disbanded, Says Amit Shah On Historic Peace Deal

ULFA has signed a peace deal with the Centre and the Assam government

New Delhi:

A tripartite peace deal between the Centre, the Assam government, and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has been signed in Delhi, bringing the curtains down on one of the biggest insurgent groups in the northeast region.

The ULFA (Independent) faction led by Paresh Baruah remains opposed to talks.

The peace deal with the oldest insurgent group of Assam aims to address issues such as illegal immigration, land rights for indigenous communities, and a financial package for Assam’s development.

Home Minister Amit Shah told reporters in Delhi the Centre will ensure all the reasonable demands by ULFA will be met in a time-bound manner, and ULFA as an organisation will be disbanded.

“We want to assure the ULFA leadership that their trust in the Centre to ensure the success of the peace process will be honoured,” Mr Shah said, and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing peace and stability in the northeast.

Mr Shah said the removal of the Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act (AFSPA) from many areas of Assam and other northeast states is proof that insurgency is nearly extinct in the region.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who sat beside Mr Shah, said the peace deal with ULFA will solve the problem of insurgency in the region to a large extent.

The Modi government has signed many peace deals with insurgent groups in the northeast after they agreed to lay down arms. In November, Manipur’s oldest valley-based armed group UNLF also signed a tripartite peace agreement with the Centre and the state government.

Founded on April 7, 1979, in Sivasagar, Assam, ULFA emerged with the objective of establishing an independent sovereign state for the indigenous Assamese people. The group began its armed operations in the late 1980s, led by figures such as Paresh Baruah, Arabinda Rajkhowa, and Anup Chetia.

Initially perceived as a group aiding the needy and the poor, the ULFA’s tactics soon escalated to armed struggle against the Indian government.

The catalyst for ULFA’s branding as a banned terrorist organisation was the killing of Surendra Paul, a prominent tea planter and brother of Lord Swraj Paul, and the subsequent extortion and threats to tea estate owners. These events exerted international pressure on the Indian government, leading to decisive action against ULFA.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk returns as “world’s richest man”

New Delhi: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has returned as the world’s richest man, recapturing the title from French luxury tycoon Bernard Arnault.

Musk earned an additional $95.4 billion through Thursday’s close, boosted by the success of Tesla and SpaceX, after losing $138 billion in 2022, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His net worth now exceeds Arnault’s by more than $50 billion after LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE shares fell due to a global slowdown in demand for luxury products.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos added more than $70 billion to his wallet this year and is now neck-and-neck with Arnault for second place, while Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s fortune increased by more than $80 billion.

According to the Index, the collective net worth of the 500 richest persons increased by $1.5 trillion in 2023, entirely recovering from the $1.4 trillion lost the previous year. The wealth of tech billionaires increased by 48 per cent, or $658 billion, because of the enormous buzz around artificial intelligence.

Yemen warns foreign military forces against supporting Israel

Speaking at a graduation ceremony of Yemeni cadets in the country’s western coastal city of Hudaydah on Thursday, Major General Mohammed al-Atifi, warned the forces “against various movements in support of the Zionist entity in the maritime theatre that spans between the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea.”

He noted that Yemeni Armed Forces “are closely and rigorously monitoring the movement of American, British and French military forces in both bodies of water.”

He underscored that the Ansarullah resistance movement, the Sana’a-based National Salvation Government, the Yemeni nation, and security forces will stand unwaveringly by the side of Palestinians until they liberate all their occupied lands, and establish a sovereign independent state with holy al-Quds as its capital.

Yemen’s Armed Forces in a statement on Tuesday announced targeting a ship as it was heading towards the occupied territories as well as regions deep inside those areas in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, who are subject to an unrelenting genocidal Israeli war.

The Yemeni Navy conducted a missile strike against the vessel, which it identified as “commercial ship MSC United,” the statement read.

“The targeting of the ship came after the crew, for the third time, ignored calls from the naval forces, as well as repeated fiery warning messages,” it added.

The Armed Forces also reported striking the port of Eilat in the southernmost part of the occupied territories as well as “other areas in occupied Palestine.”

The attacks, the statement said, were carried out “in solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people who continue to face killing, destruction, siege, and starvation.”

Yemenis have declared their open support for Palestine’s struggle against the Israeli occupation since the regime launched a devastating war on Gaza on October 7 after the territory’s Palestinian resistance movements carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

The relentless Israeli military campaign against Gaza has killed at least 21,320 people, most of them women and children. Another 55,660 individuals have been wounded.

Reports revealed that Israeli shipping companies have already decided to reroute their vessels in fear of attacks by Yemeni forces.

Yemeni forces have also launched missile and drone attacks on targets in the Israeli-occupied territories after the regime’s aggression on Gaza.
