Final Team To Be Picked On Basis Of Players' Strength Of Character: Stimac

Lined up to face strong sides like Australia and Uzbekistan in the AFC Asian Cup football in Doha next month, India head coach Igor Stimac on Friday said “strength of character” will be the parameter to decide who will be included in the final squad. India are clubbed with formidable Australia, strong central Asian side Uzbekistan and tricky Syria — all above Stimac’s team in the FIFA rankings — in the group stage of the Asian Cup from January 13 onwards. “All the boys in the (probable) list are similar in their football qualities. What we are looking for the final list of 26 is definitely experience, physical strength, and the final line will be drawn by the strength of their character,” Stimac said on the All India Football Federation’s social media handles.

“This is very important for us as a team, because no matter the talent, if there is no character nothing can be achieved,” he added.

Stimac will announce his final 26 players before the team’s departure on Saturday.

Regarding areas which the team needs improvement, he said, “I am looking for defensive compactness, offensive transition, and the set pieces mostly.

“It’s also very important to work on man marking inside the box, because I was not happy with that part of our game, in the last few games. We started leaking some unnecessary goals inside the box because marking was not properly done.” India will face Australia on January 13, before playing against Uzbekistan (January 18) and Syria (January 23).

“All three opponents are technically good, physically strong, with great speed. So, we are not going to have much difference in approach of all these three games.

“The main focus for us will be to check the fitness level of our players at present and see how much we can develop in the next two weeks,” he said.

Stimac is also grappling with injuries to few of his key players. Defensive midfielder Jeakson Singh, who underwent surgery on his left shoulder early last month, was named among the 50 probables but he is uncertain to be in the final 26.

Midfielders Glan Martins and Shah Abdul Samad, both Mohun Bagan players, had suffered injuries recently, which has given more headache to Stimac.

Central defender Anwar Ali and winger Ashique Kuruniyan, two key players in Stimac’s scheme of things, were not named in the 50-player list due to long term injuries.

The 1998 World Cup bronze medallist from Croatia said he wanted the players to believe in themselves and enjoy the game during the Asian Cup in Doha, where they will be playing in the stadiums which had hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“I am sure our fans will turn out in huge numbers to support the Blue Tigers and help them reach the needed level of confidence,” he said while speaking to the AFC Asian Cup Local Organising Committee. On talismanic captain Sunil Chhetri, the head coach said, “Chhetri is unbelievable. It’s really important for our younger players to have such an inspirational figure as a captain.

“I hope the team can make the nation proud by playing to the best of its abilities.” Stimac’s former team-mate at West Ham and England World Cupper Trevor Sinclair will assist him as part of the Indian team coaching staff during the Asian Cup.

Mexico's "Weed Nuns" Launch Movement To Take Marijuana Back From Narcos

Mexico's 'Weed Nuns' Launch Movement To Take Marijuana Back From Narcos

The “weed nuns” at their farm in Mexico.

A group of women in Mexico is challenging the established norms, dressing as nuns and growing cannabis. According to The Independent, these “weed nuns” are pushing for the drug’s legalisation to take it away from the country’s narco groups. These women call themselves Sisters of the Valley and are part of an international movement founded in 2014 that promotes the healing power or cannabis. The group has a branch in California that sells CBD products in the US, while the Mexican group, consisting of five “sisters”, grow cannabis crop, the outlet further said.

“What I have always wanted and what I am betting on is to take it (cannabis) back from the narco to make it legal,” a group member who uses the moniker “Sister Bernardet” told The Independent.

A video of the “weed nuns” is going viral on social media, but its location has not been revealed to protect the women.

Mexico has a big majority of Catholics (75%), so the image of a nun puffin away a joint can rile some people, including the families of the women.

“The sisterhood is in a totally different context here in Mexico – because of how religious the country is and because of the plant’s ties to cartels,” Sister Bernardet told news agency Reuters. She is a homeopathic practitioner, and prescribes marijuana to those suffering from cancer, joint pain and insomnia.

UK-based outlet Metro said these “sisters” tend to their plants producing cannabinoid salves. They are earning $10,000 every year, which is a fraction compared to the earnings of the California branch.

Due to the constant threat, the “sisters” have learned to be secretive in their business, drawing the curtains and drying their product in places that can’t be easily found.

The group’s founder “Sister Camilla” helps to maintain the farm and support the group’s logistics.

Hezbollah launches fresh strikes on Israeli targets

Israeli media reports said Hezbollah fired anti-tank missiles at the Dolev settlement on Friday, as the Israeli regime keeps bombarding the besieged Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah also said its fighters targeted Hadab Yaron with appropriate weapons, hitting it directly.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli regime’s decades-long campaign of bloodletting and devastation against Palestinians.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 21,320 Palestinians and injured more than 55,603 others.

Thousands more are also missing and presumed dead under the rubble in Gaza, which is under “complete siege” by Israel.

A day after the regime started its genocidal war on Gaza, Hezbollah and the Israeli regime have been exchanging sporadic fire.

More than 150 people have been killed on the Lebanese side of the border between Lebanon and the occupied territories since then, mostly Hezbollah fighters and more than 20 civilians, according to an AFP tally.

Israel says at least nine of its soldiers and four settlers have been killed in the exchange of fire.

Gold prices expected to go much higher in 2024-Telangana Today

The rise in US rates was the factor that prevented any upside for gold or rather limited it for almost one year now despite high global inflation, the report said

Gold prices expected to go much higher in 2024

New Delhi: The price of gold is expected to test levels from $2,060 to $2,090 per ounce, and on any correction if $2,035 holds, the prices may target $2,115 level in the current up-move, as per a report by Emkay Wealth Management.

The rise in US rates was the factor that prevented any upside for gold or rather limited it for almost one year now despite high global inflation, the report said. The yellow metal has boomed from the lows seen in the last six months to levels above $2,000 per ounce, and currently it is perched at $2,050 level.

The boom was possible with the depreciation of the US dollar against other currencies, and the fall in the dollar Index, both of which were possible due to the market’s perception that the US interest rates and more specifically the US official rate policy could turn soft very soon. Below $2,035, technically, there is good support at $2,010 and then at $1,980 levels.

The upward price movement is expected to continue until the first resistance level which is at $2,080-2,090 levels, the report said.

UK Man's Testicles Ripped Off In Vicious Attack By XL Bully Dog

UK Man's Testicles Ripped Off In Vicious Attack By XL Bully Dog

The American XL Bully breed of dogs will be banned in the UK from Sunday.

A man’s testicles were ripped off when he was attacked by his pet, a 44-kg American XL Bully dog, a breed that is being banned in the UK and Wales. According to Metro, the horrific attack took place in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, in October. The unidentified man received eight stitches in his genitals and 32 in his arms. The dog named Envie also attacked the man’s partner Lynsey Kelly and bit her shin, the outlet further said. The couple were too embarrassed to speak about the attack, and opened up recently.

“He was writhing on the floor and said ‘it’s grabbed my b*****ks’,” Ms Kelly was quoted as saying by Metro.

The woman said her partner had gone to throw a stick to Envie when it latched onto its arm and then to the groin.

Ms Kelly managed to lock the dog into a room and rushed her partner to hospital in an ambulance. The doctors carried out an emergency surgery in which they reattached his testicles.

Ms Kelly, meanwhile, is still recovering from her injuries. She has battled infection in her bite wounds in the past weeks.

Envie was euthanised after attacking the couple, the Metro report said.

The news comes days before a ban on XL Bully dogs comes into force. It will officially be enforced on Sunday, reported CNN, following a September announcement by the UK government amid a rise in fatal attacks involving the breed in the country.

The breed was added in September to the list of dogs banned in England and Wales under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

Under the new law, owners will have until February 1 to register them, as it will be a criminal offense to own a dog of that breed in England and Wales without a certificate of exemption.
