Poll Bugle Sounded, Congress To Formally Start Seat-Sharing Talks Next Week

Poll Bugle Sounded, Congress To Formally Start Seat-Sharing Talks Next Week

The committee is headed by senior Congress leader Mukul Wasnik

New Delhi:

Congress’s National Alliance Committee, set up to facilitate seat-sharing talks with allies, will hold meetings with party leaders from the states here on Friday and Saturday, and the negotiations with the allies will formally start next week after the panel submits a report to party chief Mallikarjun Kharge.

With the clock ticking for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and preparations taking shape for the party’s “Bharat Nyay Yatra”, the Congress, which sounded its poll bugle at a rally in Nagpur on Thursday, is set to hold a series of high-level meetings.

According to sources, Mr Kharge held an interaction with the Congress general secretaries in-charge of all states after the rally at Nagpur on Thursday evening and discussed the upcoming polls and organisational issues.

The five-member National Alliance Committee of the Congress is scheduled to hold meetings on Friday and Saturday with leaders from the states where the party is likely to contest the general election in an alliance with other INDIA bloc constituents.

The committee will then submit a report to the party president, providing details for the negotiation, including listing out the seats where the Congress is in a strong position.

The sources added that while talks with the allies have already started at the local level in some states, the negotiations will formally start next week, after the report is presented. They also said while the equations with other parties may differ in states, the final call on the alliance will be taken from a “national perspective”.

The committee formed last week is headed by senior Congress leader Mukul Wasnik and has Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel, Salman Khurshid and Mohan Prakash as its members.

The first meeting of the party’s manifesto committee for the general election, headed by former Union minister P Chidambaran, is scheduled to be held on January 4.

Mr Kharge, along with former party chief Rahul Gandhi and general secretary K C Venugopal, held a series of meetings with state Congress chiefs and other leaders over the last few days. While broad discussions were held on forming alliances, the meetings largely focused on organisational matters and the strategy for the Lok Sabha polls.

Another meeting will be held on January 4 with party leaders, including Congress chiefs and legislative party leaders from the states through which the “Bharat Nyay Yatra” will pass. The final route of the march will be decided at the meeting.

The detailed route of the yatra will be announced on January 8 while a theme song will be released on January 12.

The sources said the yatris will cover around 120 kilometres a day, including around five to seven km on foot.

A number of public meetings and interactive sessions with locals and marginalised groups have been planned during the yatra.

The “Bharat Nyay Yatra” led by Mr Gandhi will start from Manipur in the east on January 14 and conclude in Mumbai in western India in March. It will cover 14 states and 85 districts.

The march will traverse through Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Leaders from other INDIA bloc parties are also expected to join the yatra, though the plans are yet to be finalised.

Hyderabad: Despite complaints over lack of applications and ambiguity on a few aspects, including ration cards on the first day at Praja Palana programme, officials did not address the issues and many people faced similar problems at several centres on Friday as well.

Braving the cold weather, people, especially women, queued up since 6 a.m. at many centres in the city. However, many complained that obtaining the Praja Palana application forms was nothing short of a challenge.

At a few centres, officials distributed the forms free of cost but instructed the people to present local residence identification proof. Application forms were issued to the people only after verifying the local identification proofs (Aadhaar cards and power bills).

“I am from Parbath Nagar and came here seeking the application form. But officials asked me to visit Vivekananda Nagar ward office to get the application” said Srinivasa Rao, an applicant at Mothi Nagar centre.

Irked over the officials’ instructions to get the forms from respective ward offices, many purchased the form at photocopy centres shelling Rs.40 to Rs. 60 per copy. Many photocopy centres made brisk business through sale of the application forms.

Apart from unavailability of application forms, people fumed over ambiguity over ration cards. People submitted their applications for new ration cards by sharing their details on a white paper at Fathima Nagar centre and Sultan Nagar centre, Erragadda.

While officials at Fathima Nagar centre are accepting applications from people for new ration cards and giving a receipt as acknowledgement, those at Bapu Nagar centre did not accept such applications.

“We have been instructed to accept only Praja Palana applications and there are no guidelines on new ration cards applications,” said an official at the centre on the SR Nagar main road.

Amidst this uncertainty, photocopy centres sold the application for new ration cards for Rs.20 each. Many argued with the officials as to why new ration card application forms were not being distributed along with Praja Palana forms.

Atrachali Confident About Gujarat Giants' Chances Against Bengal Warriors

Captained by the talismanic Fazel Atrachali, the Adani Sportsline owned Gujarat Giants have made a solid start to the final week of the year 2023 with a couple of fantastic wins in Season 10 of the Pro Kabaddi League. Wins against the UP Yoddhas and the Tamil Thalaivas have put them in a strong place, ahead of their game against the Bengal Warriors, on New Years’ Eve. Reflecting on the wins, coach Ram Mehar Singh said, “While the opposition put a lot of focus on the likes of Fazel, one of the big turning points in our game against the Tamil Thalaivas was when Parteek got going. We played a dominant game for the majority of the match, and despite our mistakes, we could see that we were in the driver’s seat.”

“Parteek played a big role in the attack and in the defensive side of things, and I am happy about that. Even Rakesh did very well. The opponents targeting Fazel had helped us, as the likes of Sombir also were able to step up with their performances in the captain’s absence when he had to sit out.”

Speaking about the influence of his skipper, Ram Mehar explained, that having someone like Fazel in his corner is very helpful. “The captain is always motivating the players, whether it is in the match or during training sessions, the skipper is continuously giving the players a pat on the back. Even if the coach has been a little tough on them for a mistake. Fazel is an example for all the captains, even the new ones in the game. I am delighted to have a captain like him. My captain often takes on a coaching type of role when he is on the mat because of the experience he has.”

The Gujarat Giants were the most dynamic team when the competition began in Ahmedabad, and they are keen to end the year on a high, and the captain is happy that everyone in the team is stepping up as and when required.

“We have been playing as a team and the Tamil Thalaivas were concentrating a lot on me, but in that time it was good to see the other members come in and score the points,” the captain said.

Looking ahead, the coach said, that the Adani Sportsline owned Gujarat Giants will first look to go a winning streak for at least a few more games before they can breathe a bit easier. And captain Fazel said, “Maninder is a good player, but I think I can tackle him. From our next training session our focus will be on the Bengal Warriors but I think now we are playing better as a unit, so things are more in control in the defensive side of things. And with the Bengal Warriors team, one needs to keep Maninder quiet, if he does well then, they do well. Unlike us, if Parteek doesn’t do well, then Rohit will or Rakesh will and I think we are in a good place.”
