New Delhi:

A 20-year-old man was stabbed to death in northeast Delhi’s Gokalpuri area allegedly for talking to a girl who he had befriended on Instagram, police said on Friday.

The body of Mahir alias Imran was found on Wednesday lying on a roadside in Bhagirathi Vihar with multiple stabs. Mahir was a resident of Ghaziabad and worked at a flex board shop in central Delhi’s Pahar Ganj.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy Tirkey said police on Friday morning arrested three men – Arman Khan, 18, Faisal Khan, 21, and Sameer alias Baloo, 19 — from Goklapuri in connection with the murder.

“Mahir and Armaan used to talk to a girl, whom the two had befriended on Instagram. A few days ago, Mahir had gone to meet the girl when he found her talking to Arman on a video call. When he saw this, Mahir abused Armaan,” said Tirkey.

After this little row, Arman took away the girl’s mobile phone with him and threatened her not to speak to Mahir, another officer said.

On the day Mahir was killed, Arman had called him on the pretext that he was going to give him the girl’s phone.

“When he arrived at the spot, Arman, Faisal, and Sameer stabbed him to death,” the officer said.

Police said the three youths work as part-time labourers and live in Gokalpuri.

Ration and Aadhaar cards enough for Praja applications: Nodal officer

Khammam: There was no need for any certificates other than ration and Aadhaar cards to attach with Praja Palana applications, said the programme nodal officer for erstwhile Khammam district, M Raghunandan Rao.

He along with district Collector VP Gautham and Municipal Commissioner Adarsh Surabhi inspected gram sabhas organised to receive the applications in Khammam on Friday. He made the public aware of the programme and asked them to take advantage.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that applications were being collected from all the eligible people for implementation of six guarantees as part of the Abhya Hastam programme undertaken ambitiously by the State government.

Those who do not have a ration card should register with the ration card number in the name of their house owner. A single application form was sufficient for one family. The details should be filled to the extent that which scheme applies to which of the family members, the nodal officer said.

Lamichhane, Ex-Nepal Captain And DC Spinner, Convicted Of Raping A Minor

Nepal’s former national cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane was on Friday convicted by a court of raping a minor. In January, Nepal court released Lamichhane who was arrested after a 17-year-old girl alleged that he raped her in a hotel room in Kathmandu in August last year. Lamichhane, 23, is Nepal’s most high-profile cricketer, and the first cricketer from Nepal to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) when he made his debut for the Delhi Capitals franchise in 2018. A single bench of Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal passed the order on Friday following the conclusion of the final hearings that started on Sunday, the Kathmandu Post reported. The Kathmandu District Court on Friday convicted Lamichhane of rape. The next hearing will determine the jail term for the senior member of the national team, the report said.

Lamichhne is currently out on bail. On January 12, the Patan High Court ordered the release of the cricketer. Responding to a review petition filed by Lamichhane, a joint bench of judges Dhruva Raj Nanda and Ramesh Dahal ordered Lamichhane’s release on a bail bond of Rs 2 million with conditions.

The Kathmandu District Court on November 4, 2022, had passed the order to send Lamichhane to the Sundhara-based central jail after a detention hearing. Lamichhane had moved the high court challenging the order.

The Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office filed a case against Lamichhane accusing him of raping the girl on August 21.

The minor had filed a case against the cricketer on September 6 at the Metropolitan Police Circle, Gaushala.

Nepal Police arrested him on October 6 at Tribhuvan International Airport on his return from Trinidad & Tobago where he played in the Caribbean Premier League.

Through the charge sheet, the district attorney had demanded compensation from Lamichhane for the victim’s alleged physical and mental torture. After the charge sheet was filed, Lamichhane’s bank account and property were frozen.

A wily leg-spinner, armed with a vicious googly, he was a much sought-after cricketer in other big-ticket T20 leagues around the world, including the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the CPL.

The prodigiously gifted cricketer holds the record for the world’s second-fastest bowler to capture 50 ODI wickets and the third-fastest to race to 50 T20I wickets.

Lamichhane’s last international appearance came in August this year when he played against Kenya in a T20I encounter.

Hit Ukraine "With Almost Everything": Zelensky As Russia Strikes Kill 18

Hit Ukraine 'With Almost Everything': Zelensky As Russia Strikes Kill 18

Ukraine said Russia had fired 158 missiles and drones on Ukraine. (File)

Kyiv, Ukraine:

Russia launched drone and missile strikes across Ukraine Friday, killing at least 18 people and wounding over a hundred in one of the most massive air attacks of the war.

Schools, a maternity hospital, shopping arcades and blocks of flats were among the buildings hit in the barrage, said Ukrainian officials.

“Today Russia hit us with almost everything it has in its arsenal,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said. Ukraine’s Western allies joined the condemnation of the latest attacks.

Ukraine’s military said Russia had fired 158 missiles and drones on Ukraine and 114 of them had been destroyed.

Air force spokesman Yuriy Ignat told AFP that this was a “record number” and “the most massive missile attack” of the war, excluding the early days of constant bombardment.

Ukraine is urging Western allies to maintain military support after the United States released its final package of weaponry under existing agreements, which have not yet been renewed by Congress.

Ukraine presidential aide Andriy Yermak said Kyiv needed “more support and strength to stop this terror”. The US ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink said the strikes showed “Ukraine needs funding now”.

Russia tried to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defences across most major cities, launching a wave of Shahed attack drones followed by missiles of numerous types fired from planes and from Russian-controlled territory.

Buildings damaged in six cities included warehouses, a shopping mall and a maternity hospital, according to officials.

In Kyiv, AFP reporters heard several powerful explosions in the early hours of Friday.

The city’s mayor Vitali Klitschko said three bodies had been recovered from a warehouse hit by a strike in the central Shevchenko district.

In the city’s northern Podil district, another warehouse measuring around 3,000 square metres (32,300 square feet) caught fire.

There was a strong smell of burning plastic as firefighters wearing oxygen masks tackled the blaze and a huge column of black smoke billowed into the sky, an AFP reporter saw.

There were believed to be 10 people trapped under the rubble, said the head of the city’s military administration, Sergiy Popko.

AFP journalists also saw smoke near the building of Lukyanivska metro station close to the city centre. Popko said the metro station had been damaged but it reopened later in the day.

The station is located near the Artyom arms factory, which Russia said it targeted early in the war.

Maternity hospital struck

Friday’s strikes targeted at least six Ukrainian cities including Kharkiv in the northeast, Lviv in the west, Dnipro in the east and Odesa in the south.

In Dnipro, the health ministry said a maternity hospital had been “severely damaged” but the staff and patients had managed to shelter in time.

The outside of the three-storey building was scorched black and the windows blown out, an AFP photographer saw.

A shopping mall in the city was also hit and caught fire. An explosion tore a hole in the facade of the large shopping centre and the interior was blackened from smoke.

Six people were killed and 28 injured, said Sergiy Lysak, the head of the Dnipropetrovsk region’s military administration.

Three people were also killed in the southern region of Odesa and 26 wounded, prosecutors said.

Firefighters were extinguishing a blaze in a high-rise block of flats, an AFP photographer saw. Smoke was pouring out of a hole blown in the facade, the air was thick with dust and debris littered the ground.

Distressed local people watched and one family hugged each other.

In Lviv, one person was killed and 15 wounded by drones and missiles that damaged high-rise blocks of flats and two schools, the interior ministry said.

An image released by the emergency services showed window frames blown out in a nine-storey block of flats.

The eastern city of Kharkiv faced around 20 strikes, killing three employees at a civilian enterprise and wounding 11, said Oleg Sinegubov, the head of the city’s military administration.

Images released by the emergency services showed residents sweeping up shards of glass from blown-out windows in a cancer treatment clinic. There was a crater from an explosion in the forest nearby, an AFP photographer saw.

In Zaporizhzhia on the Dnipro River, four people were killed and 12 wounded after strikes on industrial and residential areas, the interior ministry said.

Crucial US support

On Thursday, Zelensky thanked the United States for releasing the last remaining package of weapons under existing authorisation, as uncertainty surrounds further US aid to his war-torn country.

“To defend freedom and security not only in Ukraine and Europe but also in the United States, we must continue to respond to ongoing Russian aggression,” he said.

Zelensky has warned that any change in policy from the US — Kyiv’s main backer — could have a strong impact on the course of the war.

The French foreign ministry said they were part of Russia’s “strategy of terror” and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: “We must continue to stand with Ukraine — for as long as it takes”.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell described it as “yet another cowardly and indiscriminate” attack on civilians.

The UN’s humanitarian envoy for Ukraine Denise Brown said the attacks were “another unacceptable example of the horrifying reality” that Ukrainians face.

New Delhi: The Central government is likely to reduce petrol and diesel prices ahead of the Lok Sabha polls as crude oil prices have also come down in the international market, which will enable the oil marketing companies to bear the burden.

According to sources, the Ministry for Petroleum and Natural Gas has worked out various combinations and permutations on the price cuts ranging from Rs 4 to Rs 10 per litre in the two fuels and the impact it will have on oil companies.

The government is also looking at reduction in the excise duty on petrol and diesel so that the entire burden of the price cut is not borne by the oil PSUs — Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum. The final decision on the price cut will be taken at the level of the Prime Minister, sources said.

The last time the prices of petrol and diesel were reduced was in May last year when the Finance Ministry cut the excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per litre and that on diesel by Rs 6 a litre.

Crude oil prices have also been falling in the global market. The price of benchmark Brent crude was hovering at around $77 a barrel in the international market on Friday. This is down from the $85-$90 range in earlier months, which makes it easier to go for a price cut in fuel prices.

Meanwhile, the shares of Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum crashed by 4 per cent in Friday’s trade amid reports of a likely cut in petrol and diesel prices.
