Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Thursday suspended the certificate issued by Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) which approved theatrical release of RGV directed “Vyuham” movie for a period of three weeks.

Justice S Nanda was dealing with a writ plea filed by Telugu Desam Party represented by its general secretary Nara Lokesh, challenging the validity of the said certificate to release the political drama-oriented movie on December 29. The petitioner further contended that the main objective of movie was to demean, denigrate and malign his party and its leaders and that the movie producer and director in the name of freedom of speech and expression are intending to infringe the fundamental right to life of its leader Chandrababu Naidu and also affecting the reputation of party and all its members.

The counsel for the petitioner argued that when the movie producer applied for film certification, the examining committee has unanimously refused to issue the same, petitioner then submitted representations to examining committee as to why the movie should not be given certification for theatrical release. However, the examining committee without considering the representations has permitted the screening with certain deletions in the film and referred it to the Revising Committee for issuance of certificate.

It may be recalled that the producer has approached High Court seeking directions to Revising Committee to consider the application for film certification in a different writ plea. Later, the Revising Committee has granted “U” Certification to the film permitting the viewing of the film in theatres to the public. The counsel for the petitioner referred various supreme court judgments relating to reasonable restriction on fundamental rights of freedom of speech and expression and also on cost of damaging reputation of an individual. On the other hand, the counsels representing producer and director of the movie, referred various supreme court judgments and argued that there is a liberty of artistic expression which cannot be curbed by anyone. Also, that once a specialised body has reviewed film and issued certification then it is deemed as the film is in accordance with law.

He also cited similar cases relating to release of Padmavati and Syra Narasimha reddy where the court has refused to interfere with the decision of revising committee issuing certification for releases. Hearing both the sides, the bench observed that reputation is an integral and important part of the dignity of an individual and cannot be taken away by exercising right to free speech. The judge further observed that this case in prima facie is in favour of the petitioner and therefore suspended the film certificate issued by CBFC for theatrical release of the film for a period of three weeks from December 28 and restrained the producers from releasing the movie.

Status quo ordered on demolitions

Justice Vijaysen Reddy of Telangana High Court on Friday directed Tahsildar Quthbullapur, District Collector Medchal Malkajgiri District, Revenue Inspector, Quthbullapur, APSFC and HMDA to maintain status quo with regard to demolition of established houses belonging to people of weaker sections in Qutbullapur area. The judge was dealing with a writ petition filed by 20 petitioners aggrieved by the demolition, the senior counsel for the petitioners V Raghunath contended that around 400 houses were subject to demolition in a day long operation by using force and without initiating any proceedings under the law and only 20 petitioners could approach this court.

The demolition took place during the early hours on December 16 while the infants and other family members were asleep without any prior intimation through notices and without following the due process of law, despite the fact that petitioners were residing in the said land since a two decades with access to all domestic amenities they were forcefully thrown out of their houses, the counsel said. He further contended that the demolition was under the supervision of Tahsildar Qutbullapur along with Police officials. As raised by V Sanjana the counsel for petitioner, in the affidavit that no notices were issued to the petitioners the judge questioned why notices were not issued. On the other hand, the Standing Counsel for APFSC and AGP of HMDA contended that the said lands belong to government and all those houses are vacant, and there is no habitation in the said houses. After hearing the rival contention of both the sides the court has ordered status quo until further directions and posted the matter to January 12.

India Wants 26/11 Mastermind Hafiz Saeed Extradited, Sends Request To Pak

India Wants 26/11 Mastermind Hafiz Saeed Extradited, Sends Request To Pak

Hafiz Saeed is wanted in India for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack

New Delhi:

India has sent a request to Pakistan to extradite 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed to India, foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told reporters today.

“The person in question (Hafiz Saeed) is wanted in numerous cases in India. He is also a UN-proscribed terrorist. In this regard, we have conveyed a request along with relevant supporting documents, to the government of Pakistan to extradite him to India to face trial in a particular case,” Mr Bagchi said.

“We have been flagging the issue of activities that he’s been wanted for. This is a recent request,” he added.

Pakistan confirmed it has received India’s request for extradition of Hafiz Saeed, but no bilateral extradition treaty exists between the two neighbours, Pakistan’s foreign ministry spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said on Friday.

“Pakistan has received a request from the Indian authorities, seeking extradition of Hafiz Saeed in a so-called money laundering case. It is pertinent to note that no bilateral extradition treaty exists between Pakistan and India,” Ms Baloch said.

Hafiz Saeed, 71, was sentenced to 33 years in jail by a Pakistan court after being convicted in two cases of terror financing in April 2022. The case was filed by Pakistan’s Counter-Terrorism Department.

He, however, has continued to evade punishment for involvement in the 26/11 terror strikes.

He has been sentenced in multiple cases of terror financing in the past. In 2020 too, he was sentenced to 15 years in jail.

He has spent years in and out of detention in varying forms in Pakistan, sometimes under house arrest. But he had roamed freely across the country and addressed incendiary speeches targeting India with impunity.

India’s extradition request also comes at a time when a political front backed by the 26/11 Mumbai attacks mastermind will fight the Pakistan election. Hafiz Saeed’s son and terror group Laskhar-e-Taiba leader Hafiz Talha Saeed is one of the candidates.

Hafiz Talha Saeed is considered No. 2 in the LeT, second only to his father. Last year, the Home Ministry declared him a designated terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

For years, the US has offered $10 million as an award for information that could lead to Hafiz Saeed’s arrest. He had been moving around freely in Pakistan as the head of the Jamaat-ud-Dawa or JuD which presents itself as a charitable organisation but is seen as a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba.

"Mili-Juli Sarkar" vs BJP, People's Choice For 2024 Is Clear: PM Modi

'Mili-Juli Sarkar' vs BJP, People's Choice For 2024 Is Clear: PM Modi

PM Narendra Modi said his guarantee is not a formula for winning polls, but the trust of the poor

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the choice of people is the BJP and there is a consensus among them that the country does not need a “mili-juli sarkar” as an era of such governments resulted in loss of optimism and gave a bad image to India.

Exuding confidence about the 2024 general election, PM Modi in an interview to India Today magazine said there is a consensus among the people, experts, opinion makers and friends from the media that “our country doesn’t need a mili-juli sarkar“.

“We have lost 30 years due to instability resulting from mili-juli sarkar. People have seen the lack of governance, appeasement politics, corruption in the era of mili-juli sarkar. This resulted in loss of optimism and confidence among the people and gave a bad image to India in the world. So, naturally the choice of the people is the BJP,” PM Modi said.

His comments assume significance, coming ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in which the opposition INDIA bloc is set to challenge the BJP.

PM Modi said his guarantee is not a formula made for winning elections, but it is the trust of the poor. “Today, every poor person in the country knows that Modi will not back down from his duty. This trust of the poor also gives me the energy that even if I completely exhaust myself or push myself over my limit, I would not let this trust be violated,” he said.

PM Modi said to make India developed by 2047, the focus will be on GYAN — “G for Garib, Y for Yuva, A for Annadata, N for Nari Shakti”.

Discussing ‘Viksit Bharat @2047’, PM Modi drew parallels between the 1922-1947 period and the next 25 years.

“From 1922 to the period up to 1947, everyone wanted to contribute towards the freedom movement. I see a similar optimism among the people to make India a developed country by the time we celebrate 100 years of independence. This energy is my driving force,” PM Modi said. “Hum GYAN pe dhyaan denge (we will focus on GYAN)…” he added

On the BJP selecting fresh faces as Chief Ministers of three heartland states – Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh – PM Modi said it may appear like a fresh trend, but it is not new for the party.

The Prime Minister said he himself is the best example of this practice within the BJP. PM Modi pointed out that when he became Gujarat Chief Minister, he had no prior administrative experience and was not even elected to the assembly.

“Most of the other parties today are parivarvadi (dynastic) parties and these find this democratic churn difficult,” PM Modi said, adding the BJP is a cadre-based party, driven by a clear mission and has the ability to nurture multiple generations of leadership at the same time.

On why the BJP is not ruling in any of the big southern and eastern states, PM Modi pointed to the party’s expanding footprint in the country. there is no corner of the country where our party does not have support”.

“From local bodies in Kerala to being the principal opposition in many states, our party is doing robust work among the people,” he said.
