Iran says E3, US had better stop pressure on its nuclear program

Iran says France, Germany, Britain and the United States must quit issuing statements and exerting fruitless pressure on Tehran and take the necessary political steps instead.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan’ani made the statement on Friday in reaction to a joint statement issued by the three European parties to the 2015 nuclear agreement – Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the United States on Thursday.

The Western statement has condemned what is claimed to be an increase by Iran in the production rate of highly enriched uranium of up to 60% purity.

As always, the Iranian official underscored the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. He said Tehran still believes diplomacy is the best approach toward the removal of unreal concerns about the peaceful Iranian nuclear activities.

“Now the ball is in the court of the US and the three European countries. They should take the necessary political decisions by abandoning the policy of issuing statements and fruitless pressure,” Kan’ani stated.

The US and the European troika – also known as the E3 – have left the negotiating table, the Iranian diplomat reminded. They are, therefore, in no position to make any comment about Iran’s nuclear program, he added.

“Enrichment at 60% level in Iran’s enrichment centers has always been and will continue to be in accordance with the peaceful needs of the country and fully under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).”

Instead of pursuing a blame-game policy and taking politically-motivated positions, the US and the E3 had better review their performance regarding the sanctions removal talks in the past two years and observe the outcome of their unconstructive policies, Kan’ani said.

The spokesman reiterated Iran’s position in continuing cooperation with the IAEA.

Unilateral demands and unwillingness to correct the wrong measures taken by Western countries will not help settle the nuclear issue, the Iranian official said.

In May 2019, a year after the US unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA, Iran started to take “remedial measures” by reducing its commitments under the deal after the European troika failed to fulfill theirs.

Tehran began to gradually remove a cap set in the JCPOA on its nuclear activities at bi-monthly intervals. At the time, Iran also maintained that if the Iranian economy was shielded from sanctions, it would reverse its nuclear decision.

In September, President Ebrahim Raeisi said Iran’s uranium enrichment to the purity level of 60% was in response to the lack of commitment by the three European parties to the JCPOA.

Hyderabad: Spurious drug racket busted, stocks worth Rs 26 lakh seized

Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, conducted raids at various locations in Hyderabad on Friday and busted a spurious/counterfeit drug racket of fake antibiotics, hypertension and cholesterol medicines, analgesics and seized stocks worth Rs 26 lakh.

DCA Director General, V B Kamalasan Reddy said on receipt of information about spurious drugs coming to Hyderabad through a courier shipping company, Trackon Couriers, the DCA team carried out raids at courier offices at Dilsukhnagar and Uppal and found two parcels each weighing 14.5 kg and 13.34 kg. The parcels, which claimed to contain machine parts, were booked at Kashipur, Uttarakhand by Amar Pharmaceuticals, Kashipur to Puvvada Lakshman from Hyderabad.

The DCA officials took assistance of police to trace the location of Puvvada Lakshman and caught him in Dilsukhnagar. Later, raids were carried out at Sri Venkateswara Enterprises, Lakshman’s godown at Disukhnagar. On questioning, Lakshman revealed the names of his accomplices Pokala Ramesh and Garapalli Purnachander of Saidabad.

The seized spurious/counterfeit drugs included fake medicines which were falsely labeled under the names of reputed companies like Sun Pharma (Rosuvas 10 tablets used in the treatment of High cholesterol), Glenmark Pharma (Telma H Tablets, Telma 40 Tablets used in the treatment of Hypertension), Aristo Pharmaceuticals (Monocef-O 200 Tablets – Antibiotic), Torrent Pharma (Chymoral Forte used to relieve pain and swelling).

Two varieties of antibiotics MPOD-200 Tablets (Cefpodoxime Proxetil and Lactic Acid Bacillus Tablets) and MEXCLAV 625 Tablets (Amoxicillin and Potassium Clavulanate, Lactic Acid Bacillus Tablets) labeled as manufactured by Meg Lifesciences, Sirmour, Himachal Pradesh, a fictitious company, were also seized.

Hezbollah launches eight more anti-Israel attacks in support of Gaza

Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement launched eight more attacks against Israeli military positions on Friday, hitting bases as well as troops, in continuation of its support for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah said it launched an attack on Israeli artillery bunkers in Khirbet Ma’ar, another on the Al-Marj site, and one more on the Ruweisat Al-Qarn site. It also attacked the Hadab Yaroun site two times.

The movement also hit gatherings of occupation soldiers at Ramya site and another location between Zar’it barracks and Birket Risha site.

Resistance fighters also hit a crane carrying surveillance equipment and spy gear in Doviv farms.

According to the movement, the operations were carried out “in support of the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and solidarity with their courageous and honorable resistance.”

Earlier, Israeli media reported 27 launches from Lebanese territories toward the Galilee region on Friday, in addition to four warnings about drone intrusion, which led to no interceptions.

The Israeli military said it had struck “Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon” after reporting rocket fire from there.

The regime says it uses aircraft, tanks, and artillery to strike Hezbollah sites in Lebanon.

‘Hezbollah ready for more whenever necessary’

The fresh round of exchange of fire comes as Israeli officials have stepped up threats against Hezbollah.

Benny Gantz, a member of the regime’s war cabinet, said on Wednesday that Israel will restrain Hezbollah if the international community and the Lebanese government don’t do that.

On Thursday, Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem warned the regime they’re ready to escalate militarily if Israel does.

“We are making the sacrifices that the battle requires, and they are great, but we are also repelling a great danger,” Qassem said.

He added, “We are ready for more whenever necessary. We are not intimidated by threats or warnings. We in the field are clear that we are part of this battle.”

“If Israel goes too far, we will retaliate twice. We will not fear either Israeli or American threats or intimidation, because the future of the region now depends on this hope and this sacrifice.”

Also, Hezbollah’s Deputy Chief of the Executive Council Sheikh Ali Daamoush said on Friday the resistance will continue operations regardless of the pressures, threats, or sacrifices, as long as the enemy does not retreat from its aggression against Gaza.

Since October 8, the day after the Israel onslaught against Gaza started, the frontier between Lebanon and the Israeli-occupied territories has seen deadly exchanges of fire, mainly between the Israeli army and the Hezbollah movement.

Reports say Israel has repeatedly used US-supplied internationally-banned white phosphorus munitions in its attacks on Lebanon.

The fighting has forced the evacuation of tens of thousands from the northern part of the Israeli-occupied territories, which have been pummeled by rocket fire and shelling carried out by Hezbollah and allied Palestinian groups.

Hezbollah has urged residents in southern Lebanon to take their CCTV camera systems offline to prevent Israel from hacking into those devices installed outside homes and shops in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah has already fought off two Israeli wars against Lebanon in 2000 and 2006, forcing the regime’s forces to retreat in both cases.

‘Adopting diamond cutting to dismantle affected piers of Medigadda barrage’

Hyderabad: Engineer-in-Chief (Irrigation) C Muralidhar said end to end investigation was in progress into the Medigadda barrage accident and diamond cutting method was being adopted to dismantle the affected piers. “It was a tough task and cannot be done manually. It can be done by adopting blasting method, but that could impact other structures”, he said.

“Finally, we have decided to opt for diamond cutting method. A private agency has been entrusted with the job and already the agency’s team has arrived” Muralidhar told a group of newsmen visiting the project on Friday.

He also said that the work area was being cleared by constructing a cofferdam and it would be completed in ten days. End to end investigation was under progress. Totally three piers have to be reconstructed along with three crest gates, he explained. The Engineer-in-Chief further said that seepage was observed at four points in Annaram barrage as well. The problem was being attended with grouting.

As part of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, the three barrages, including Medigadda, Annnaram and Sundilla were taken up at a cost of Rs 7,500 crores.

Medigadda barrage could withstand the highest flood flow of 28 Lakh cusecs in the very second year during 2021-22 but piers in Block 7 were found sinking on October 21. A loud sound was heard near the block.

National Dam Safety Authority team had visited the project and took stock of the condition. As per the directions of the national agencies, measures were being planned for rehabilitation of the barrage.

Till date, the State government had spent Rs.93, 872 crores on Kaleshwaram project. It had mobilised Rs. 71,565 crores from the financial institutions for the project. The principal outstanding to be cleared is Rs. 66,868 crores, he said.

The Engineer-in-Chief said Rs. 3192 crore worth of bills were to be cleared to the discoms. As many as 6,918 million units of electricity were used till date for Kaleshwaram project, he added.

China's Ultra-Deepwater Drilling Ship Sets Sail To Reach Earth's Mantle

China's Ultra-Deepwater Drilling Ship Mengxiang Sets Sail To Reach Earth's Mantle

The ship ship can carry about 33,000 tonnes of cargo and measures 179 metres long.

China has unveiled its first ocean drilling vessel, the Mengxiang, which is designed to delve into the Earth’s crust and explore the mysteries of the mantle. If successful, this will mark humanity’s first exploration into the upper mantle. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the massive ship, aptly named “dream” in Chinese, has been created by the China Geological Survey along with over 150 research institutes and companies. It represents a significant stride in deep-sea drilling capabilities, aiming to reach where humanity has never ventured before.

According to SCMP, the colossal ship can carry about 33,000 tonnes of cargo and measures 179 metres (590 feet) long. The vessel can traverse 15,000 nautical miles and operate for 120 days per port call. Its stability and structure are designed to withstand the strongest tropical cyclones, enabling it to operate anywhere in global waters. Moreover, its drilling power is the best in its class, with the ability to reach 11,000 metres below the sea’s surface.

Traditionally, human activities and scientific exploration have been limited to the crust’s surface layer, which has an average thickness of 15,000 metres. Beneath the crust lies the mantle, a pivotal layer connecting the surface to the core. The boundary between the mantle and crust, known as the Mohorovicic discontinuity, or Moho, remains the final barrier for humans in exploring the mantle.

The Mengxiang aims to penetrate the crust and reach the mantle from the sea surface, opening an unknown door for scientific research.

According to the outlet, since the early 1960s, American scientists have tried to pierce through the Moho to reach the mantle, but the goal has yet to be achieved. However, advancements in deep ocean drilling technology have provided valuable insights into the Earth’s structure.

“Rock samples from ultra-deep boreholes have become crucial for understanding plate tectonics, oceanic crust evolution, ancient ocean climates and seabed resources,” said Li Chun-feng, a marine geologist at the Department of Marine Sciences at Zhejiang University in eastern China.

Further, SCMP reported that while Mengxiang recently underwent trials primarily testing its propulsion system, the core drilling details remain shrouded in mystery.

“There’s a gap between theoretical design depth and practical operations, high temperature and pressure at the seabed pose difficulties for drilling beneath 7,000 metres,” said Wan Buyan, a professor at Hunan University of Science and Technology who led the development of China’s first deep-sea drill equipment and is an expert in seabed engineering.

Hyderabad: From as early as seven in the morning, long queues of people waiting to secure the Abhayahastham applications marked the Praja Palana centres in the city on Friday. Even as the authorities were creating awareness of the availability of forms for free, many continue to purchase their photocopies elsewhere.

Ward Offices, Tahsildar Offices, and all Praja Palana centres will provide these forms at no cost, informed Hyderabad Collector’s official X account. Making it easier for the public, many corporators in the old city also distributed black and white copies of the applications for free.

While confusion over the location of centres, details to be provided and eligibility seem to have dwindled on day two, concerns over why bank account details were not taken and the reason for using paper forms instead of online remain.

Less grievances, more applications:

Though the initiative aimed to both gather information on public grievances and receive applications for the Abhayahastham schemes, the number of grievances received is significantly less than the number of applications.

Over 3.62 lakh applications received on day two:

With 3.13 lakh Abhayahastham applications and 48,802 others, the total number of applications received on Friday stood at over 3.62 lakh. This makes the total number of applications received in two days 9.31 lakh.

The highest 76,379 were from the Charminar zone and the lowest 6,515 were from Secunderabad Cantonment. LB Nagar (41,639), Khairatabad (48,856), Kukatpally (58,723), Serilingampally (27,525), and Secunderabad (53,589) also saw huge number of applications for the welfare schemes.

Charminar received the highest number of applications – 10,774 – in regard to other grievances and covered 72,020 households. On the whole, 4.07 lakh households were covered in all six zones on day two. Of which the highest 77,824 were in Kukatpally and the lowest 24,000 in Secunderabad Cantonment.

20 Passengers Of 'Donkey Flight' Row Questioned By Gujarat Cops

20 Passengers Of 'Donkey Flight' Row Questioned By Gujarat Cops

The Gujarat CID has formed four teams to investigate the issue

Ahmedabad:

At least 20 passengers from Gujarat who were on the Nicaragua-bound flight which was sent back mid-route from France have been quizzed by police in a bid to unearth a suspected illegal immigration network operating from the state, a senior official said on Friday.

The Nicaragua-bound aircraft, an Airbus A340 carrying 276 passengers, was grounded in France for four days over suspected human trafficking. It landed in Mumbai in the early hours of December 26.

According to a senior state Crime Investigation Department (CID) official, those passengers included at least 60 from Gujarat, who have already reached their respective native places in the state.

They are being questioned by the department to find out whether they had any plans to cross into the United States of America illegally after reaching Latin America, the official said.

“They were sent back from France. There was a rumour they had planned to enter the US illegally after landing in Nicaragua. In their statements, they told us they were going there as tourists. We are going into the details to find out who were the agents behind their trip,” said S P Rajkumar, Additional Director General of Police, CID – Crime and Railways.

Of the 60 who returned, some 20 have been grilled already by the agency, he added.

“We are verifying their documents to ascertain whether they used genuine or forged documents to proceed to Central America. We will also check their financial transactions because, ideally, they should not have paid more if they were going there as normal tourists and not with any other intention,” said the senior IPS officer.

“Though we have started questioning, no one is divulging facts. They claim they went there as tourists. We are investigating the case from all angles,” he added.

On Tuesday, Superintendent of Police, CID (Crime), Sanjay Kharat had said the CID had formed four teams to investigate the issue.

“The CID (crime) wants to take action against agents who had promised help to the victims to enter the US and other countries (illegally). We have formed four teams which will get information from the victims regarding promises made to them by these agents,” he had told reporters.

The chartered flight, which was operated by Romanian charter company Legend Airlines and bound for Nicaragua, landed at Vatry near Paris on December 21 for a technical stopover en route from Dubai when the French police intervened.

French authorities launched a judicial investigation into the conditions and purpose of the trip, with a unit specialising in organised crime investigating suspected human trafficking.

Nicaragua has become a popular destination for those seeking asylum in the US. As many as 96,917 Indians attempted to enter the US illegally in the financial year 2023, signalling a 51.61 per cent jump from the previous year, according to data made available by the US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP).

At least 41,770 of those Indians attempted to enter the US via the Mexican land border, CBP data shows.

Flights to Nicaragua or third countries where obtaining travel documents is easy have come to be known as ‘dunki’ flights.
