BRS slams Congress over misinformation on Kaleshwaram project, advises to focus on fulfilling electoral promises

Hyderabad: In a scathing rebuke, BRS MLA and former Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari slammed the Congress government, accusing them of orchestrating political theatrics in the guise of white papers and judicial investigations.

He said the Congress which made 412 promises during the elections, is now resorting to diversionary tactics only to cover up its failure to secure funding for fulfilling its schemes. Addressing a media conference at the BRS Legislature Party office here on Friday, Srihari criticised the Ministers’ visit to the Medigadda barrage, alleging that they aimed to mislead the public rather than fulfill their responsibilities.

He feared that the Ministers were trying to influence the proposed judicial probe demanded by the BRS to ascertain the facts, by delivering judgements on allegations, even before conducting investigation.

In a point-by-point rebuttal, the former Deputy Chief Minister said the presentation on Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) during the Ministers’ visit exposed the false propaganda of the Congress.

He highlighted that the State government confirmed the Rs 93,000 crore expenditure for the project, rebutting allegations of Congress senior leader Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of a Rs 1 lakh crore scam in the project construction.

He pointed out that while the Congress leaders alleged that no new ayacut was created under KLIS, the officials revealed that over 98,000 acres of new ayacut was created, besides stabilising ayacut of over 15 lakh acres.

Condemning the Congress leaders for questioning project cost escalations, Srihari stated that the Kaleshwaram project underwent a meticulous redesign process after Maharashtra’s objections which in turn resulted in the increased estimated cost from Rs 38,000 crore proposed for construction at Thammidihatti during the Congress regime to more than Rs 80,000 crore due to multiple barrages and reservoirs constructed as part of the Kaleshwaram project.

“Is there any irrigation project in the country which was completed at the proposed cost? The Congress leaders are repeatedly claiming that no new ayacut was brought under cultivation. If that is true, how come the total cultivation area surpassed one crore acres and Telangana secured second spot in paddy cultivation,” he questioned.

The BRS legislator reminded that despite objections from Maharashtra government and advise from the Central Water Commission against constructing Pranahitha-Chevella project at Thammidihatti, the then Chief Minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy laid foundation for the project in December 2008 and spent over Rs 6,000 crore by releasing mobilisation advances to the contractors, without taking up any major work. He questioned the delay in executing the project, despite the Congress remaining in power in the State as well as the Centre till 2014.

Srihari explained that after the BRS came to power in 2014, former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao got the Pranahitha-Chevalla project redesigned as Kaleshwaram project to avoid further hurdles and ensure water supply to people of Telangana.

He rubbished the Congress leaders’ claims that Pranahitha-Chevella project would have supplied water through gravity and reminded that it was also a lift irrigation scheme.

“It is shamefull that the Ministers are resorting to false claims that the previous BRS government never sought national status for Kaleshwaram project. Former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar, myself and other Ministers have repeatedly taken up the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others in the Central government, but there has been no response,” he added.

He said the BRS government had also sought national status for Palamuru-Rangareddy LIS. In response to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s criticism of the Chandrashekhar Rao government’s decision ot purchase new official vehicles, Srihari dismissed it as a non-issue.

He said there was nothing to hide as the decision was taken in the Cabinet meeting and bullet-proofing of the vehicles are done in Vijayawada, officially.

He challenged the Congress Ministers to prioritise governance over baseless accusations and fulfill their promises in at least six months, if not 100 days as they assured. He advised them against spreading misinformation against the previous BRS government to escape from their promises.

UN frustrated as Israel hinders life-saving aid to Gaza

The United Nations has expressed frustration at how life-saving aid is being hampered from entering the Gaza Strip as the dire humanitarian crisis worsens with no end in sight to Israel’s weeks of constant siege and bombardment of the populated coastal territory.

UN humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths called out the “impossible situation” facing people in Gaza and those trying to help them, saying that aid convoys are constantly coming under fire in the territory.

“You think getting aid into Gaza is easy? Think again,” Griffiths said on Friday in a post on X.  “This is an impossible situation … The fighting must stop.”

He made the remarks after Israeli forces fired on an aid convoy as it returned from northern Gaza along a route designated “Safe” by the military.

Thomas White, director of UNRWA affairs in Gaza said, “Our international convoy leader and his team were not injured but one vehicle sustained damage – aid workers should never be a target.”

The persistent difficulty in getting humanitarian relief into the besieged Palestinian territory comes as a UN-backed report said last week that the entire 2.3 million population of Gaza is facing crisis levels of hunger, with 576,600 people at catastrophic – or starvation – levels.

Israel imposed a “total siege” on the coastal enclave since it launched its relentless air and ground offensive on Palestinians on Oct.7. The blockade has deprived the population of Gaza of food and water.

The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution last week to boost humanitarian assistance to Gaza with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

The UN chief said then that a humanitarian ceasefire “is the only way to begin to meet the desperate needs of people in Gaza and end their ongoing nightmare.”

He also said Israel is creating “massive obstacles” for entry of aid into Gaza. “The real problem is that the way Israel is conducting this offensive is creating massive obstacles to the distribution of humanitarian aid inside Gaza.”

Venezuela launches military exercise after British warship 'threat'

Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro has ordered a “defensive” military exercise off the coast of the disputed region of Essequibo over Britain’s “provocative” deployment of a warship to neighboring Guyana.

On Thursday, Maduro said he was launching “a joint action of a defensive nature in response to the provocation and threat of the United Kingdom against peace and the sovereignty of our country.”

His announcement came as Royal Navy patrol vessel HMS Trent is scheduled to arrive in Guyana, a British ally and former colony, on Friday, amid the South American country’s simmering territorial dispute with neighboring Venezuela over the Essequibo region, a Guyana foreign ministry source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Maduro said the deployment of the British warship breaches the “spirit” of an agreement reached between the South American neighbors earlier this month, during a meeting between Maduro and Guyana President Irfaan Ali, to avoid the use of force and avoid increasing tensions in the dispute.

“We believe in diplomacy, in dialogue, in peace,” Maduro said.

“But no one should threaten Venezuela, no one should mess with Venezuela. We are a people of peace, but we are warriors and this threat is unacceptable for any sovereign country,” he added.

“The threat of the decadent, rotten, ex-empire of the United Kingdom is unacceptable.”

The television broadcast accompanying Maduro’s statement showed fighter jets, ships, and ocean patrol vessels participating in the Venezuelan military drill.

According to Venezuelan military leaders, 5,600 uniformed personnel were ready for the operation.

According to the Guyana foreign ministry source, the ship would be in its territory for “less than a week” for open sea military exercises.

Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement the country “reserves all actions, within the framework of the Constitution and International Law, to defend its maritime and territorial integrity.”

Earlier this month, Venezuela held a referendum in which voters overwhelmingly supported their country’s claim to the Essequibo region, an oil-rich area of 160,000 square kilometers.

Maduro has since begun legal maneuvers to create a Venezuelan province in Essequibo and ordered the state oil company to issue licenses for extracting crude in the region.

Caracas claims the Essequibo River to the region’s east forms a natural border recognized as far back as 1777.

Essequibo is home to 125,000 of Guyana’s 800,000 citizens.

As the congress government announced subsidy of 500 for LPG cylinders, people have been standing in queues

Karimnagar: Though there is no official instruction from the state government to the people that they need to update their details in Aadhar cards to avail the benefits of new schemes, people are rushing to MeeSeva centers to upgrade their details in Aadhar cards. As the congress government announced benefits such as Rs 2,500 financial assistance to women every month and subsidy of 500 for LPG cylinders, people have been standing in queues at MeeSeva centers and LPG gas agencies.

Since many Aadhar cards were registered before 2014 with Andhra Pradesh as state, people are updating their Aadhar card with full KYC to get government schemes. Similarly, a large number of consumers are rushing to LPG distributors to complete eKYC. Since the central government asked consumers to update eKYC, many of them have assured it to be related to subsidized gas from the state government. Going a step ahead, male consumers are also transferring LPG connections onto the names of their wives assuring that it is possible to get the subsidy of 500 on LPG cylinders.

A resident of Chinthakunta of Karimnagar, Rajender is standing in a queue line in front of HP Gas agency in Bhagathnagar for eKYC. Speaking to Telangana Today, he said that they were doing eKYC of LPG connection since it was necessary to get the subsidy of 500 on LPG cylinders. South Africa files ICJ lawsuit against Israel over ‘genocidal acts’

South Africa has instituted proceedings against Israel at the International Court of Justice over the regime’s “genocidal” onslaught on Gaza, which has so far killed over 21,000 Palestinians.

The lawsuit says Israel’s actions are “genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group”.

“The acts in question include killing Palestinians in Gaza, causing them serious bodily and mental harm, and inflicting on them conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction,” the lawsuit said.

The application said Israeli attacks breach the UN’s Genocide Convention, and urged the court to “order Israel to cease killing and causing serious mental and bodily harm to Palestinian people in Gaza”.

"Should Be Part Of Test Side": Afridi On Rauf Opting For BBL Over Pakistan

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi believes star pacer Haris Rauf should have been part of the Test squad in Australia rather than the Big Bash League (BBL). Rauf withdrew from the series before the team was announced, citing a desire to control his workload and safeguard his body. He played four games for the Melbourne Stars in Big Bash League during Pakistan’s ongoing Test series against Australia.

Given his speed, the former cricketer believes the bowler would have done admirably in the circumstances. Afridi further suggested that Rauf would have enjoyed himself on the pitches constructed by Australia in Perth and Melbourne.

“I think Haris [Rauf] should be part of this side instead rather than [the BBL]. In these conditions, the kind of pace he has, he would have performed well and enjoyed himself on the kinds of pitches Australia prepared in Perth and here,” Afridi said while speaking to media at the MCG as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Even by Perth standards, the ground at Optus Stadium for the opening Test was active, with fast bowlers appearing to acquire more help as the match progressed.

Afridi also stated that despite the decline in speed, he did not believe Shaheen was injured, and that Pakistan needed to invest in depth rather than individuals.

“I’ve never got the impression that Shaheen has an injury. If you’re injured you can’t play as a fast bowler. He knows his responsibility and how important he is to the team. The fast bowlers, we are expecting a lot from them because they’ve done well in the past. Babar, Rizwan, Shaheen etc. have performed so well we expect them to perform in every match. Relentless consistency is challenging in cricket,” Afridi added.

“I have always said that unless our bench is strong we won’t be able to take the best decisions. The A team should be as strong as the main team, so if Shaheen or Babar or Rizwan aren’t strong, we shouldn’t have the excuses of players being unavailable, like we do with Naseem now. When our bench is strong, we will no longer have excuses,” said the former all-rounder.

Afridi also encouraged Pakistan to keep a fighting chance in the upcoming Test, which the visitors need to win by 317 runs. No team has pursued a higher mark in the fourth innings at the MCG in over a century, and Pakistan might have been chasing a considerably lower score if their slip catches had held.

“This Test match they should win. A good opportunity we missed to get them out easily for 150 runs. But it’s a chaseable score. I rate Babar Azam very highly and so does the world. He is the backbone of Pakistan’s batting lineup. The best batters lose form, but I have seen such consistent batters very rarely in Pakistan cricket,” he added.

Iraq’s Islamic Resistance renews attack on US base in Syria

“In line with confronting the American occupiers in Iraq and the region and in response to the crimes of the Zionist regime in the Gaza Strip, the Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance of Iraq targeted the “Kharab Al-Jeer” base of the American military in the depth of Syrian territory with rocket attacks, and the rockets were accurately It hit its targets,” said the statement released by the group.
Iraqi resistance groups have conducted similar attacks against US positions in Syria and neighboring Iraq ever since the Israeli regime began its war against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The groups say their attacks are in retaliation for America’s support of the Israeli regime’s crimes against people in Gaza.

After the martyrdom of Resistance commanders who led the anti-terrorism fight in Iraq and Syria, the Iraqi parliament approved a piece of legislation to call for the withdrawal of American troops from the country, a demand that the US troops have yet to meet.

Explained: Can Trump Run For 2024 US Presidential Elections Despite Bans?

Explained: Can Donald Trump Run For 2024 US Presidential Elections Despite Bans?

Donald Trump is scheduled for trial in March after being charged with conspiracy over violence

Washington:

With multiple US states hearing challenges to Donald Trump’s right to run in the 2024 election, his supporters claim his enemies are tearing up democracy to prevent his return to the White House.

Rulings in Colorado and Maine banning the ex-president from their primary nominating contests under the Constitution’s “insurrection clause” set off a political earthquake that could upend the campaign.

But do they pose a genuine threat to Trump’s presidential ambitions?

Why Trump might be ineligible

The US House of Representatives impeached the Republican tycoon for inciting insurrection after he called on his supporters to march on the US Capitol ahead of a deadly riot that delayed the certification of the 2020 election.

A large, bipartisan majority of the Senate agreed with the lower chamber’s finding, but the tally fell short of the two-thirds of members required for a conviction, which would have barred Trump from seeking office again.

Federal prosecutors have since charged Trump with conspiracy over the violence, and he is scheduled for trial in March.

Meanwhile, activists have brought court challenges nationwide to stop his name appearing on ballots for state primaries under the 14th Amendment, which bars people from office if they have taken an oath to defend the Constitution but subsequently “engage in insurrection.”

Where is Trump barred from running?

On December 19, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Trump was ineligible for the state’s primary under the 14th Amendment’s “insurrection clause.”

Maine — where the secretary of state, currently a Democrat, makes the initial eligibility determination — followed suit on Thursday.

Related challenges have been filed nationwide, with decisions pending in 14 states, according to national security website Lawfare’s online disqualification tracker.

What happens next?

Both states put their bans on hold while the legal process plays out — meaning Trump will almost certainly appear on both ballots for their March 5 primaries.

Grassroots Republicans have challenged the ruling in Colorado and the Trump campaign has indicated that it intends to appeal in both cases.

The Maine decision would go to the state’s Superior Court first, while Colorado’s ruling has already been through the state system and would be elevated directly to the US Supreme Court.

What can the US Supreme Court do?

The strongly conservative-leaning high court — which includes three Trump appointees — can decline to review the Colorado case, meaning the Trump ban would stand.

In reality, most analysts believe that Maine joining with Colorado removes any doubt that the justices will act.

They would determine whether or not section three of the 14th Amendment — the insurrection clause — applies to a former president.

The court could also rule on whether the ban is automatic or would require an act of Congress, and whether the 2021 storming of the Capitol and Trump’s role in it indeed qualify as insurrection.

The effect of the bans

Even if the Colorado and Maine bans stand, front-running Trump is expected to be able to secure the Republican nomination comfortably without those states, so his path to the White House would not necessarily be impeded.

But an adverse Supreme Court ruling that is binding on lower courts nationwide — rather than a narrow procedural ruling affecting only Colorado — could torpedo the ex-president’s primary challenge.

He would then have to decide whether to run for president as a third-party candidate.

But even if the high court doesn’t weigh in on the state level rulings and the damage is limited to Colorado and Maine, the justices could leave the door open to challenges to Trump’s eligibility for the general election.

So he could well find himself barred from challenging President Joe Biden in November, even if he wins the Republican nomination.

Timetable

The gears of the US justice system grind notoriously slowly — particularly at the top.

The Supreme Court has not indicated whether it intends to take up the Colorado appeal, nor how long it would take to rule on Trump’s eligibility if it did. Trump’s opponents have stressed the importance of an urgent decision.

The court can act quickly when required: Its ruling ending Florida’s vote count in the 2000 election — handing victory to George W. Bush — took less than a month.
