Drones strike bases housing US occupation troops in northeastern Syria

Two military facilities occupied by American forces in Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah have come under separate attacks by unmanned aerial vehicles.

Lebanon’s Arabic-language al-Mayadeen television news network, citing local sources speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that an explosive-laden drone targeted the US-run facility at Kharab al-Jir military base in the Yarubiyah district of the province on Sunday.

There were no immediate reports about the extent of damage at the military installation, and possible casualties.

This came shortly after another combat drone struck the US military base in the oil-rich town of Rumeilan.

Earlier, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of anti-terror fighters, in a statement published on its Telegram channel claimed responsibility for the drone strike on al-Harir Air Base, situated 45 kilometers (27.9 miles) north of the Erbil International Airport, on Saturday evening.

The group noted that the airstrike was carried out in retaliation for US support of Israel’s bloody war against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has claimed responsibility for most of the dozens of recent attacks against US occupation forces in Iraq and Syria, saying they were carried out in retaliation for US support of Israel’s war on Gaza.

The US House of Representatives on November 2 passed a standalone $14.3-billion military assistance package for Israel. The legislation, however, is yet to clear the Senate.

Washington, which has backed Tel Aviv’s ferocious attacks on Gaza as a means of “self-defense,” has also been casting its veto against the United Nations Security Council resolutions that called on the occupying regime to cease its aggression.

Israel has launched relentless air and ground attacks on Gaza strip, including hospitals, residences, and houses of worship, since Palestinian resistance movements launched their surprise attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the regime on October 7.

At least 21,672 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been killed. Another 65,165 individuals have sustained injuries as well.

Massive waves on California coast cause flooding, force evacuations

Coastal communities in California faced another day of towering waves and possible flooding on Saturday as officials issued evacuation orders in some areas and warned residents to stay off beaches and coastal roadways.

The National Weather Service in Los Angeles forecast significant flooding in low-lying coastal areas with powerful waves and strong rip currents posing an “exceptional risk” of drowning and damage to structures like piers and jetties.

Waves as high as 6.1 meters could wreak more havoc on waterside homes in vulnerable communities along much of the California shoreline, battered by extreme surf and heavy rains over the end of the week.

Officials in southern California’s Ventura County issued an evacuation warning on Saturday for residences along the Pacific Coast Highway, and area beaches remained closed, the Ventura County Fire Department said.

Harming Resistance to cost US, Israel dearly: Ghalibaf

Addressing a parliamentary session on Sunday, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf offered his condolences on the loss of General Seyed Razi Mousavi, an Iranian anti-terror adviser who was martyred in an Israeli missile strike in the suburbs of Damascus on December 26.

“I should emphasize that any act of aggression against the commanders or the physical infrastructures of the resistance (front) will cost the US and the Zionists dearly,” he warned.

Denouncing the Israeli onslaught on Gaza, Ghalibaf said the more the Zionist regime commits crimes, the closer it will get to defeat.

He also echoed the stances of the “courageous leaders of the Palestinian resistance” that no ceasefire will be acceptable unless the Israeli strikes come to a complete halt and all Palestinian prisoners are freed in exchange for the release of Zionist captives.

Nearly 22,000 people have been killed and over 56,000 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7.

The Israeli bombardments have destroyed 70 percent of homes in Gaza, where 1.5 million people have been left homeless.

"Instead Of Krishna Or Shardul…": Ex-Pak Star Slams India's Selection

The Indian cricket team suffered an embarrassing innings and 32-run loss to South Africa in the first Test match in Centurion. The Proteas put an all-round performance to outwit India within three days and took a 1-0 unassailable lead in the two-match series. While all the batters, barring Virat Kohli, flopped in India’s second innings, the bowlers too failed to impress in their only chance as South Africa were not needed to bat for a second time in the game. In their only innings, the hosts scored 408 despite Jasprit Bumrah‘s four-wicket haul.

After India’s loss to South Africa, former Pakistan batter Salman Butt said that India should have given a chance to Arshdeep Singh instead of going with Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna.

Mohammed Siraj was decent with the ball in the game as he picked two wickets while Ashwin scalped only one wicket but remained economical (2.20).

Shardul Thakur and Prasidh, however, failed to impress as they claimed one wicket each and conceded runs at an economy of 5.30 and 4.70, respectively.

“Instead of playing Prasidh Krishna or Shardul Thakur, it would have been better if India picked Arshdeep Singh in the squad. He bowls over 135 kph and also swings the ball both ways. He might have been effective in the Test. Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur gave a lot of easy boundary balls. It doesn’t seem that the two can challenge batters,” said Butt on his YouTube channel.

A day after their embarrassing defeat to hosts South Africa in the first Test, India called up right-arm fast bowler Avesh Khan on Friday in a bid to bolster their pace attack for the second and final Test at Cape Town.

The right-arm fast bowler was named as a replacement for Mohammed Shami, who was ruled out of the two Tests as he did not get the necessary clearance from the BCCI medical team.

The 27-year-old Avesh, who has so far claimed 149 wickets in 38 first-class games at 22.65, was a part of India’s victorious campaign in the three-match ODI series against South Africa before the Tests in which he took six wickets.

Avesh is currently busy representing the India A side in their four-day tour match against South Africa A at Benoni, where he returned 23.3-5-54-5 to help bowl out the hosts for 263 in the first innings.

India captain Rohit Sharma lamented the poor support given by other bowlers to pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah after the visitors suffered one of their worst defeats in South Africa.

IMA reports rise in upper respiratory tract infections in Telangana

Hyderabad: Senior doctors, who are members of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Telangana, in a state-wide survey reported a significant rise in cases of upper respiratory tract infections, ILI and SARI like ailments in their outpatient wings, a trend in-line with the ongoing rise of Covid infections throughout the country.

The IMA, Telangana survey, which included physicians in Hyderabad, districts and government hospitals, said large number of patients reported with typically Covid-like symptoms including sore throat, dry cough, malaise, myalgia, sometimes high fever, obstructive pulmonary diseases, exacerbation of Asthma attacks.

Senior office bearer of IMA, Telangana, Dr M Kiran, who helmed the survey, said there was not much evidence of increased incidence of hypoxia (breathlessness) patients. “Patients with high grade fever without drop in SpO2 levels are responding to Fluvir. A majority of the cases are self-limiting,” he said.

There is an increase in respiratory cases with mild respiratory distress in children below two years and majority were recovering with very few needing hospitalization and ICU care. Nasal cleaning and hygiene should be a supportive care for infants. “Parotitis (inflammation of parotid glands) has gone up, along with the rise in viral diarrhea cases among children,” says Dr Srisailam Kottooru, senior pediatrician from Nizamabad.

Another senior IMA member and physician Dr Suresh from Hyderabad points out that a large number of adults and children were reporting with sore throat, cold, dry cough, body pains etc. “At this point, we are only providing symptomatic treatment,” he said.

Interestingly, a majority of IMA members are reporting rise of parotitis among children and high grade fever among adults. Doctors who took part in the survey, however, said that almost all the ailments were self-limiting and none of them have so far been fatal in their respective OP and IP wings

IMA Telangana survey trends:

• Rise in upper respiratory tract infections cases in all districts

• Large number of children reporting parotitis and high grade fever

• Parotitis is inflammation of parotid gland, a common ailment of salivary glands

• Other common symptoms include rise in viral diarrhea, asthma, chest infections, sore throat, cold, cough.

• Physicians advise rapid antigen test for Covid confirmation

Russia Strikes Ukraine, Vows Retaliation Over Attacks That Killed Over 20

Russia Strikes Ukraine, Vows Retaliation Over Attacks That Killed Over 20

Three more people were killed by Russian strikes.

United Nations, US:

Russia launched fresh strikes against Ukraine at dawn on Sunday, a day after vowing to retaliate for what it called a “terrorist attack” on the city of Belgorod.

Several Iranian-made “Shahed” drones targeted Ukraine’s northeastern city of Kharkiv overnight, according to local authorities, as the two sides have taken turns accusing each other of pummelling civilian areas of their shared frontier over the weekend.

“As a result of the night attack of Russian drones on Kharkiv, buildings in the city centre were damaged. These are not military facilities, but cafes, residential buildings and offices,” the city’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, wrote on Telegram, without mentioning casualties.

“On the eve of the New Year, Russians want to intimidate our city, but we are not scared.”

The strike follows the deadliest attack on civilians in Russia since the start of the conflict in February 2022.

At least 22 people were killed and dozens more wounded on Saturday in Belgorod, a Russian city just 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the border that has been repeatedly struck by what Moscow says is indiscriminate shelling.

Moscow said Saturday’s attack included the use of controversial cluster munitions, and told an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council that Kyiv had targeted a sports centre, an ice rink and a university.

Russian envoy Vasily Nebenzya called it a “deliberate, indiscriminate attack against a civilian target”.

Ukraine’s allies countered that responsibility ultimately lay with Russian President Vladimir Putin for invading the neighbouring country two years ago.

“If Russia wants someone to blame for the deaths of Russians in this war, it should start with President Putin,” said British envoy to the UN Thomas Phipps.

Both Putin and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky are due to give New Year’s Eve speeches Sunday, as the conflict between their countries approaches its second anniversary in February.

January 1, day of mourning

In Belgorod, footage posted online showed a street strewn with debris and smoke billowing from burned-out cars in the city’s centre. AFP was not able to immediately verify the circumstances of the strike.

Authorities in Belgorod said the 22 dead included at least three children, with 109 people wounded.

The attack came a day after Ukraine said a barrage of Russian missile strikes on several cities, including the capital, had killed at least 40 people.

Schools, a maternity hospital, shopping arcades and blocks of flats were among the buildings hit in Friday’s barrage, one of the most violent attacks since the start of the war.

Ukraine was still sifting through the rubble on Saturday when fresh strikes hit the regions of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Chernigiv, according to local authorities.

Three more people were killed by Russian strikes across Ukraine on Saturday, the officials said.

The prosecutor’s office said Russian rocket attacks on Kharkiv on Saturday evening had wounded 26 people after hitting a range of buildings, including a hotel, a kindergarten, shops and restaurants.

The casualties included a British national, initially identified as a journalist, who was in fact a security adviser to a German media team, the statement added.

January 1 will be declared a day of mourning in the capital Kyiv, where at least 17 people were killed, city officials said.

Russia’s army said it had “carried out 50 group strikes and one massive strike” on military facilities in Ukraine over the past week, adding that “all targets were hit”.

The United Nations condemned the attacks and said they must stop “immediately”.

-Appeal to Western allies –

In the face of sustained Russian assaults, Ukraine is urging Western allies to maintain military support.

“Next year will be a time of many decisions — global decisions. And Ukraine needs to be able to influence them to be able to achieve its goals,” Zelensky said in his evening address Saturday.

“We will fight for our influence, for justice for Ukraine, and I am grateful to all the leaders who help, who have been with us since February 24th and will be with us in 2024.”

Britain announced it would send hundreds more air-defence missiles to Kyiv, after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared: “We must continue to stand with Ukraine — for as long as it takes.”
