Video: On New Year's Eve, Gandhis Share Their Orange Marmalade Recipe

Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi make orange marmalade at their home

New Delhi:

As 2023 came to an end, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi celebrated the day by cooking orange marmalade at home with fresh fruit plucked from their kitchen garden. The recipe belongs to Rahul Gandhi’s sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Rahul Gandhi uploaded the process of making the marmalade in a five-minute video on his YouTube channel under the banner of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, or march for a united India.

Sonia Gandhi also shared how she learnt to adjust to Indian dishes decades ago. “When I came here, it took me time to adjust to the Indian flavours, especially the chillies,” Sonia Gandhi said.

The video starts with the two Gandhis walking to their kitchen garden with a wicker basket to pluck the fruit.

“Mum, why do you have to cut it anyway? Why can’t you just pluck it?” Rahul Gandhi said as he cut the fruit from its stalks in the garden.

“They have to be absolutely ripe,” Sonia Gandhi said. “Actually, this is Priyanka’s recipe,” she added.

Soon, both came inside the kitchen, a clean and minimalist setup, and started working on the oranges.

“If BJP people want to get the jam, they can get it too. What do you say, mummy?” Rahul Gandhi said as he stirred a yellow mash of fruit pulp and sugar inside an aluminium vessel in low flame.

“They will throw it at us,” Sonia Gandhi replied, and both broke out in laughter.

“That’s good,” her son said. “Then we can pick it up again.” More laughter followed.

After making the marmalade, they put them in small jars and pinned a message on them in a piece of brown paper – “With love, from Sonia and Rahul.”

The YouTube video carried the logo of the Congress’s Bharat Jodo Yatra campaign, led by Rahul Gandhi.

The yatra began on September 7 from Kanyakumari and passed through 12 states, culminating in Jammu and Kashmir – spanning a distance of over 4,000 km in over 135 days.

North Korea's Kim warns war inevitable

Pyongyang put a renaissance satellite into orbit in November at its third attempt and this month, again launched its most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which is seen as having the range to deliver a nuclear warhead to anywhere in the United States.

“The task of launching three additional reconnaissance satellites in 2024 was declared” as one of the key policy decisions for 2024 at the end of a five-day party meeting chaired by leader Kim Jong Un, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

Kim wrapped up the meeting on Saturday, lashing out at the US, which he blamed for making war inevitable.

“Because of reckless moves by the enemies to invade us, it is a fait accompli that a war can break out at any time on the Korean Peninsula,” Kim said, according to KCNA.

He ordered the military to prepare to “pacify the entire territory of South Korea”, including with nuclear bombs if necessary, in response to any attack.

Experts say North Korea aims to continue its policy of military pressure to try and increase any leverage around November’s presidential elections in the US, where former President Donald Trump is bidding to return to power.

When Trump was last in office, he held two summits with Kim and met him at the demilitarised zone that divides the two Koreas, but while the events made lots of headlines, they failed to make any breakthrough.

US President Joe Biden’s administration has deepened political and military ties with South Korea and imposed new sanctions as Pyongyang has tested more weapons.

Washington has also deployed nuclear-powered submarines in South Korea as well as flown its long-range bombers in drills with Seoul and Tokyo.

“Pyongyang might be waiting out the US presidential election to see what its provocations can buy it with the next administration,” Leif-Eric Easley, a professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, wrote in an email.

Kim said he could not ignore such US deployments, claiming such weapons had completely transformed South Korea into a “forward military base and nuclear arsenal” of the US.

“If we look closely at the confrontational military actions by the enemy forces… the word ‘war’ has become a realistic reality and not an abstract concept,” Kim said.

Al-Aqsa Storm nullified Western support for Israel: Hezbollah

A high-ranking official with the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement says the large-scale surprise attack by Hamas and other Gaza-based resistance groups against Israel rendered ineffectual the regime’s army and its massive Western support.

Head of Hezbollah’s Political Council, Ibrahim Amin al-Sayyed, said that Al-Aqsa Storm Operation brought about a substantially strategic transformation, and that the status quo in the West Asia region is no more similar to what it used to be prior to October 7, when the Palestinian operation was launched.

“The operation could render ineffectual the Zionist regime’s military apparatus, and all the foreign support it was garnering generously,” Sayyed noted.

Regarding the United States’ and its Western allies’ stance vis-à-vis Hezbollah, he stated that Washington and those in its league view the Lebanese group and the Axis of Resistance as a threat to the advancement of their agendas.

“The United States’ roots run deep into illegality, because it was established through occupation and acquisition of Native American lands by force. The Zionist regime was also created by means of usurpation of Palestinian lands. This will fizzle out at last and become history,” Sayyed pointed out.

The Israeli regime has been waging sporadic attacks on southern Lebanon since October 7, when it launched a devastating war against the besieged Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah has mounted near daily rocket attacks on Israeli positions, while Israel has conducted air and artillery strikes in southern Lebanon.

More than 150 people, mostly Hezbollah fighters, have been killed in the Lebanese territory since October 7, according to an AFP tally.

More than a dozen civilians, including three journalists, were also among them. The Lebanese army also lost a soldier.

Israel says at least six of its troopers and four settlers have been killed in the area.

Watch: Baby Elephant Reunited With Mother In Tamil Nadu, Anand Mahindra Gives A Shout Out To Rescue Team

The officials located the elephant herd with the use of drones and experienced forest watchers.

Elephants are familial creatures and they move around in herds. However, sometimes, calves get separated from their herd and have to be reunited. In one such rescue operation, forest officials at the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) in Tamil Nadu successfully rescued and reunited a lost elephant calf with its herd. The calf was discovered wandering alone, searching for its mother. The age of the elephant calf was about 4 to 5 months.

A search party was sent to trace the herd from which the calf had separated and the herd was identified around 3 km away with the help of drones, an official said. The calf was safely taken to the spot, after which he was washed and mud was applied to him to remove any human imprint. The calf was subsequently released close to the herd, after which it reunited with its mother.

Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Supriya Sahu shared videos of the rescue operation on X and appreciated everyone who was involved in the operation.

”The year ends on a heartwarming note for us at TN Forest Department, as our Foresters united a lost baby elephant with her mother and the herd after rescue in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve at Pollachi. The little calf was found searching for the mother when field teams spotted her. With the help of drones & experienced forest watchers, the herd was located and the tiny calf was safely reunited. Teams are still on ground for monitoring. Kudos to Ramasubramanian, CF, Bhargava Teja FD, Range officer Manikantan, and the entire team,” she wrote while sharing videos.

The clips showed how the officials led the operation to search for the elephant’s family. In the video, the baby elephant can be seen attentively following the rescue team and then reuniting with its mother.

West using UN rights body as tool against Iran: FM

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has called for an end to the Western countries’ “instrumental use” of the United Nations Humans Rights Council (UNHRC) to exert pressure against the Islamic Republic.

Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks on Sunday during a meeting at the Foreign Ministry with members of the special committee formed upon a decree by President Ebrahim Raeisi to investigate 2022 foreign-backed riots across Iran.

He hailed Raeisi’s initiative as a clear sign of Iran’s “responsibility and seriousness about protecting and promoting human rights.”

He also condemned Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza and the gross violation of Palestinians’ rights over the past eight decades, which are supported by the United States and the Western countries.

The West’s anti-Iran claims concerning human rights in the Islamic republic “lack any legal and moral validity,” Amir-Abdollahian added, urging an end to the “instrumental use of the UNHRC by certain Western countries.

“The mechanisms imposed by rights institutions on the Islamic Republic under the influence and pressure of a few Western states have no legal justification and legitimacy,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the committee Hossein Mozaffar slammed the “dual approach” of the Western countries to human rights, saying they are using the concept as a tool to exert political pressure against independent nations while supporting Israeli genocide against Palestinians.

Foreign-backed riots broke out in Iran last September after the death of 22-year-old Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, with rioters going on a rampage, brutally attacking security officers and causing massive damage to public property.

She fainted at a police station in the capital Tehran and was pronounced dead three days later at the hospital.

An official report by Iran’s Legal Medicine Organization concluded that Amini’s death was caused by illness rather than alleged blows to the head or other vital body organs.

Iran’s intelligence community said several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, used their spy and propaganda apparatuses to provoke unrest in the country.

"Instead Of Krishna Or Shardul…": Ex-Pak Star Slams India's Selection

The Indian cricket team suffered an embarrassing innings and 32-run loss to South Africa in the first Test match in Centurion. The Proteas put an all-round performance to outwit India within three days and took a 1-0 unassailable lead in the two-match series. While all the batters, barring Virat Kohli, flopped in India’s second innings, the bowlers too failed to impress in their only chance as South Africa were not needed to bat for a second time in the game. In their only innings, the hosts scored 408 despite Jasprit Bumrah‘s four-wicket haul.

After India’s loss to South Africa, former Pakistan batter Salman Butt said that India should have given a chance to Arshdeep Singh instead of going with Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna.

Mohammed Siraj was decent with the ball in the game as he picked two wickets while Ashwin scalped only one wicket but remained economical (2.20).

Shardul Thakur and Prasidh, however, failed to impress as they claimed one wicket each and conceded runs at an economy of 5.30 and 4.70, respectively.

“Instead of playing Prasidh Krishna or Shardul Thakur, it would have been better if India picked Arshdeep Singh in the squad. He bowls over 135 kph and also swings the ball both ways. He might have been effective in the Test. Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur gave a lot of easy boundary balls. It doesn’t seem that the two can challenge batters,” said Butt on his YouTube channel.

A day after their embarrassing defeat to hosts South Africa in the first Test, India called up right-arm fast bowler Avesh Khan on Friday in a bid to bolster their pace attack for the second and final Test at Cape Town.

The right-arm fast bowler was named as a replacement for Mohammed Shami, who was ruled out of the two Tests as he did not get the necessary clearance from the BCCI medical team.

The 27-year-old Avesh, who has so far claimed 149 wickets in 38 first-class games at 22.65, was a part of India’s victorious campaign in the three-match ODI series against South Africa before the Tests in which he took six wickets.

Avesh is currently busy representing the India A side in their four-day tour match against South Africa A at Benoni, where he returned 23.3-5-54-5 to help bowl out the hosts for 263 in the first innings.

India captain Rohit Sharma lamented the poor support given by other bowlers to pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah after the visitors suffered one of their worst defeats in South Africa.

Why martyr Soleimani called martyr of Quds?

Martyr Soleimani ; martyr of Quds

The importance of the role of Martyr Soleimani can be examined in different dimensions. As Iran’s senior international commander, he has dealt with regional threats such as various crises in Iran’s neighboring countries and terrorist threats that affected Iran’s eastern and western borders after September 11, 2001. One of the most important roles of this commander is in confronting the occupation of the Zionist regime and liberating Quds. Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas’s political office stated at the martyr’s funeral, ” Commander Martyr Soleimani gave his whole life in support of Palestine, and I declare that he is the great commander of Quds”.
Apart from these words, it seems that the goals and actions of Martyr Soleimani were the most indicative of his status as Martyr of Quds.

Martyr Soleimani had revolutionary spirit in fight against occupation

A look at the principles and goals of the Islamic Revolution shows that confronting the Zionist regime was one of its main goals from the beginning. The principle of supporting the oppressed is considered an addendum to anti-arrogance and anti-tyranny. Based on this, the Islamic Republic, in parallel with the fight against arrogance and colonialism, considers itself obliged to support the oppressed of the world who are fighting against the arrogant. Imam Khomeini (RA)also stated that “we are in favor of the oppressed. whoever is oppressed in any pole, we are in favor of it”.
Martyr Soleimani’s revolutionary spirit in defending Quds is according to the statement of the leader of the revolution.

Martyr Soleimani considered fighting against the Zionist regime as the only solution to the Palestinian issue. At the ceremony of the 40th day of Martyrdom of Martyr Morteza Hosseinpour in 2017, referring to the need to resist the Zionist regime, he said “Palestine has no choice but to resist; It has no choice but to stand. There is no other way except sacrifice”.
He also said at the martyrdom ceremony of Imad Mughniyeh in February 2018 “Today, Gaza and Lebanon are constant sources of anxiety for Israel, and every missile fired from Palestine can be seen with Imad Mughniyeh’s fingerprints.”

In a statement addressed to the commander of the Qassam forces, Soleimani wrote “Assure everyone that Islamic Iran, no matter how much the pressures increase and its siege tightens, will not leave Palestine alone”.
“Defending Palestine is a matter of honor and we will never give up this religious duty in exchange for the luxuriance of this world. Defending Palestine is a real example of defending Islam and the Quran”, he noted.

Martyr Soleimani perceives Quds as main conflict between Islam, West

Another feature that depends on the role of Martyr Soleimani as Martyr of Quds is the importance of the Palestine issue for him. Martyr Soleimani was the commander of the Quds Force as part of the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic, but he considered the issue of Quds and Palestine not a foreign policy issue, but a religious issue related to the entire Islamic world.

The Islamic Jihad Secretary General Ziad Al-Nakhale, says that the occupied city of Quds was always in the heart of General Soleimani, and in all the battles in which Martyr Soleimani was present in the region, the compass was the Quds War; Because the goal was to maintain resistance.

Martyr Soleimani said in a speech “All our fights in the Islamic world with the West are over a mosque. All our unity in the Islamic world is based on one mosque. All this war is over Al-Aqsa Mosque. All these conspiracies around the Islamic world are based on this mosque, and everything that could and can unite the Islamic world is a mosque.”

Martyr Soleimani leads mission of Quds Force towards issue of Palestine

Martyr Soleimani fulfilled the goals of the Quds Force in the form of the orders of Imam Khomeini (RA) and the leadership of the revolution in line with the main goal of confronting the Zionist regime as the main threat against the Islamic Republic and the Islamic world from the beginning of his activity as the commander of the Quds Force in 1997 until his martyrdom on January 3, 2020.

The purpose of the Quds Force before his command was more focused on directly confronting concentrated threats. While during the period of General Soleimani, these actions gradually led to overlap with the goals of the Resistance. Since Soleimani’s martyrdom, his actions in the Palestine issue at the beginning of his tenure in the Quds Force received more attention.

General Hassan Ravandeh considers devoting to Quds Day and being in the front line of the resistance as the two most important actions of the martyr. He says that the first important action of Martyr Soleimani was to pay special attention to the celebration of International Quds Day, noting that during his 23 years as a commander in the Quds Force, he paid special attention to the celebration of International Quds Day and personally followed the programs of the Quds Day in all parts of the world.
The second action was to be on the front line of the fight against the Zionist regime, he stated, pointing out that before the presence of General Soleimani in the Quds Force, they did not have any serious military work, and all actions were defensive and security, but with the arrival of General Soleimani as the commander of the Quds Force, the shape and image of the work changed and with an extensive visit to the resistance area, he checked the facilities personally.

Equipping Palestinians

“Filling the hands of the Palestinians”, is an interpretation by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and is the most telling proposition for the actions of of Martyr Soleimani in the Palestinian issue.
One aspect of this proposition is military support for the Palestinian Resistance. The result of Martyr Soleimani’s support for Palestine and Quds is that Hamas has access to conventional weapons such as kornet missiles, suicide drones, and remote control equipment.

In the Al-Aqsa Storm Operation, the equipping tunnels and missile launch systems failed the Zionist regime in many attacks on these targets.

After the martyrdom of General Soleimani, the Secretary General of Islamic Jihad said “This issue was like a miracle and it was very difficult in terms of technical, security, and feasibility, but in the end, the weapons sent by General Soleimani to the Gaza Strip, with the same missiles, opened the way for the bombing of Tel Aviv”.

Another aspect of this “filling the hands of the Palestinians” includes the unity of the power of the Resistance groups around the issue of Palestine and Gaza. Soleimani not only upgraded the operational capacity of the Palestinian forces from stone to modern weapons, including the ability to build rockets but also used the entire geography of the Resistance to defend Al-Quds.

The Resistance groups, which were separate parts until a decade ago, in recent years have become a coalition with specific goals, the result of which was to establish a balance of terror against the Zionist regime. It is in this direction that the Al-Aqsa Storm Operation has faced the support of Iraqi groups, Lebanese Hezbollah, and the Yemeni National Army.

Conclusion

In general, it should be said that the title “Martyr of Quds” was an indication of the priority of confronting the Zionist regime and is synonymous with “Quds Freedom” in the opinions of Martyr Soleimani. Martyr Soleimani put confronting the regime’s occupation at the top of his agenda with the spirit born from the Islamic Revolution. Also, within the framework of the general goals of the decision-makers of the Islamic Republic’s establishment, the mission of the Quds Force was focused on providing weapons support to the Palestinian groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Funeral of journalist killed in Israeli strike on Nusseirat camp

“At any moment we will probably be martyrs”, says a journalist holding the press vest of a fellow reporter outside the Al-Aqsa hospital in Deir al-Balah ahead of the funeral of Jabr Abu Hadrous, a journalist for the Quds Channel, the day after he was killed in an Israeli strike on his house in Nusseirat. More journalists have been killed in the Gaza war over such a short period than in any other conflict in at least 30 years, said media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
