Aravalli:

A 35-year-old man has been detained for allegedly raping a five-year-old daughter of his neighbour in a village in Gujarat’s Aravalli district, police said on Sunday. The accused was caught by villagers and handed over to the police on Saturday night after the incident, an official said.

They found the girl’s body with her hands and legs tied and mouth stuffed with cloth lying under the bed in the house of her neighbour, he said.

Prima facie, the man lured the girl under some pretext on Saturday evening, raped her, and strangled her to death, said Dhansura police station sub-inspector SJ Desai.

“The man has been detained and being questioned,” he said.

An FIR was registered against him on a complaint lodged by the uncle of the girl, Mr Desai said, adding that the crime branch is handling the investigation.

Hyderabad: With five months left for the Vice Chancellors (VCs) of the State universities to demit office, the State government is drawing up plans to appoint new VCs. To this effect, the government will soon constitute search committees.

In the review meeting on Education on Saturday, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is learnt to have enquired about the tenure of current Vice Chancellors and reportedly asked the officials to commence the process. It is learnt that officials have been told to make arrangements for new VCs to take charge on the day when present VCs demit office.

While there are 16 universities in the State, the tenure of VCs of Osmania University, Kakatiya University, Telangana University, Palamuru University, Satavahana University, Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, Mahatma Gandhi University, JNTU-Hyderabad, Dr. Ambedkar Open University and Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University will conclude in May this year.

The search panel is tasked to scrutinize applications based on the eligibility and sends a list of three names to the government, which in turn sends to the governor who appoints the VC from the given names.

Leader: General Soleimani was prime factor in reviving resistance front

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the “most remarkable” of services rendered by Iran’s legendary anti-terror figure Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani was that he revived the resistance front in the region.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remark in a meeting with General Soleimani’s family members.

The commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) was assassinated in a cowardly drone strike authorized by then President of the United States Donald Trump near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.

Soleimani was assassinated along with Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), and their companions.

Ayatollah Khamenei also stated that the late Iranian commander had gone to great lengths to revitalize the resistance front, and did so with “sincerity, prudence and wisdom.”

The Leader emphasized that General Soleimani’s personality traits are widely known due to his integrity.

Pointing to Israel’s latest chapter of savagery in the besieged Gaza Strip, which has continued since October 7, Ayatollah Khamenei said Gaza has been able to withstand almost three months of onslaught thanks to the resistance front.

The Leader also appreciated efforts by the current commander of the IRGC Quds Force Brigadier General Esmail Qa’ani who has succeeded the late national hero.

Israel waged the US-backed war on Gaza after Hamas-led Palestinian resistance groups conducted the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to its decades-long campaign of death and destruction in Palestine.

Israel has killed more than 21,800 people, most of them women and children. Over 56,400 individuals have been wounded and many bodies remain trapped under rubble.

"If Pakistan Defeats India, It's An Upset…": Gambhir On Cricket Rivalry

Babar Azam (L) and Rohit Sharma© AFP

The on-field rivalry between India and Pakistan is considered to be one of the intense battles in the world of cricket. The two teams have not played a bilateral series in around a decade due to political tensions and as a result, their matches in international or continental competitions are some of the most highly-anticipated encounters in the calendar. Last time when these two teams faced each other was in the Cricket World Cup 2023 and India were able to extend their unbeaten run against Pakistan in the tournament. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir believes that India are currently “far superior” in comparison to Pakistan and as a result, the balance in the rivalry is not same as earlier.

“Pakistan has dominated India a lot of times. Currently, if you see the level of both teams, India is far superior to Pakistan in all three formats. If Pakistan defeats India it’s an upset, if India defeats Pakistan, it’s very much given,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

India went unbeaten in the Cricket World Cup 2023 before they were eventually defeated by Australia in the final. Gambhir said that the rivalry between India and Australia has emerged as a top one in the recent past and he believes that it has even surpassed the India-Pakistan cricket rivalry.

“India and Australia, from a cricketing point of view, is a top rivalry. If you ask a cricket fan what is the actual rivalry, they will also say India and Australia,” Gambhir added.

Gambhir is no stranger to controversies. Gambhir is well known for his fiery comments and straightforward analysis which sometimes leads to conversations on social media.

During a recent Q&A session on X (formerly Twitter), a fan ended up asking Gambhir why he makes such ‘controversial statements’. “Why you always give so much controversial statements? #AskGG,” he posted. In response, Gambhir came up with his blunt style of answering.

“I say what I feel. You should think who benefits from the controversies!,” he remarked.

Sirens go off in Russian border city day after deadly attack

According to the latest data, 24 people, including four children, were killed and 108 wounded in that attack. The strike also caused widespread destruction, damaging dozens of apartment blocks and more than 50 vehicles, Gladkov said.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Saturday’s attack used a Czech-made RM-70 Vampire multiple-launch rocket system, as well as domestically produced Olkha rockets armed with cluster bombs. The latter type of weapon, which disperses a large number of submunitions over a wide area, is banned in more than 100 countries due to the high risk it poses to civilians.

Russian officials have called Saturday’s tragedy a “terrorist act” and claimed that Western countries, which have provided Kiev with massive amounts of military aid, were complicit in the attack.

While Moscow has claimed that a Czech-made weapon was used in the barrage and called an urgent UN Security Council meeting on the matter, Prague’s representative to the organization did not attend the session. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky said that Prague “refuses to let Russia summon us anywhere” and does not want to “serve the aggressor’s propaganda.”

However, Moscow suggested that the Czech Republic skipped the meeting because it was afraid to publicly respond to the accusations.

Prices of vegetables, lentils, commodities soar in Mancherial

A woman vends vegetables in a market in Mancherial.

Mancherial: Prices of vegetables, lentils and commodities soared since the last few days, causing financial burden on the public.

Prices of vegetables, beans, brinjal, etc, carrot, cauliflower, drumsticks, lady’s finger, etc., have gone up drastically. For instance, brinjal is priced at Rs 80 per kilogram, while indigenous beans (Chikkudu) are sold for Rs 100 a kg. Rates of lady’s finger, drumsticks, cauliflower and carrot have increased by at least 20 percent.

Prices of essential ingredients of curries such as green chilli, tomato, coriander leaves, fenugreek, onions, ginger and garlic too have shot up. Green chilli is sold at Rs 80 per kg, while coriander leaves are priced at Rs 100 a kg. Garlic can be bought for Rs 400 per kg when compared to Rs 200 sold a fortnight back.

The prices went up at a time when devotees are celebrating Bonalu festival to thank Lord Shiva or Mallanna for their well-being and for registering bumper harvest by cooking various types of dishes and congregating at local temples on Sundays. They traditionally worship the deity in the month of December and January for seven Sundays.

The devotees regretted that celebrating the festival had become a costly affair. Vegetable vendors said that the prices were shot up due to increase in demand and dip in supply. They, however, hope that the rates would come down by the Sankranti festival.

Meanwhile, the price of fine rice grains such as Jai Sriram and HMT Sona varieties have increased by Rs 10 per kilogram. The rice is sold for Rs 7,000 per quintal in the market of Mancherial town. The price of toor dal (kandipappu) has gone up from Rs 140 to Rs 180 per kg. The rates of groundnut, sesame, cooking oil, Bengal gram and other lentils have swelled ahead of the Sankranti festival.

People of Telangana, known for preparing various snacks such as chakinalu, garelu, murukulu and laddus during Sankranti are worried a lot over the spike in prices of ingredients. “I am forced to reduce the quantity of snacks considering the soaring prices of key ingredients in the recent past,” Rajakka, a woman from Gowthaminagar said.

‘Zionist criminals to pay’ for assassinating Iranian commander: Raeisi

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi visits the family of martyr Brigadier General Seyed Razi Mousavi without prior notice on December 30, 2023.

President Ebrahim Raeisi has condemned Israel’s assassination of a senior Iranian military advisor of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in Syria, stressing that the occupying regime will pay the price for the crime.

President Raeisi made the remarks during an unannounced visit to the family of martyr Brigadier General Seyed Razi Mousavi on Sunday, as he extended his condolences to his family.

The Iranian president called the murder a “cowardly act” and went on to say that the sacrifices and dedication of the martyrs form the cornerstone of the country’s security and power.

“The services and sacrifices of this great commander in supporting and strengthening the Islamic resistance front will forever remain honored,” he added.

Raiesi further attributed the heinous crime committed by the Israeli regime to its incompetence and frustration in the face of the resistance front in the region.

“Certainly, this crime will not go unanswered, and the Zionist criminals will pay for this crime,” he said.

Mousavi was martyred in a terrorist Israeli airstrike on December 27, while on an advisory mission in Syria. He was a comrade of top Iranian anti-terror commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, who was also assassinated in a US drone strike in Iraq in January 2020.

The Israeli regime has for years targeted what it calls Iran-linked positions in Syria.

Iran maintains an advisory mission in Syria at the request of Damascus with the aim of helping the war-torn Arab country get rid of the foreign-backed militants who have been fighting the democratically-elected Syrian government since 2011.

Earlier in December, Israel killed two IRGC military advisors — Mohammad Ali Ataee Shoorcheh and Panah Taqizadeh — in an attack in Syria.

The IRGC announced in a statement that the two officers were martyred against the backdrop of the relentless savagery of the “fake and child-killing” Israeli regime in Gaza.
