NZ vs BAN: New Zealand Win Third T20I To Square Series With Bangladesh

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner took four wickets as they beat Bangladesh by 17 runs in a rain-affected third and final Twenty20 international on Sunday to draw the series 1-1. After dismissing the tourists for 110 in Mount Maunganui, New Zealand’s top-order collapsed to 49-5 before Jimmy Neesham and Santner recovered to reach 95-5 off 14.4 overs. When heavy rain halted play, the Black Caps were comfortably ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern target, thanks largely to an unbeaten 28 from all-rounder Neesham.

The result denied Bangladesh a first series victory on New Zealand soil in any format, having lost the preceding ODI series 2-1.

“Our bowlers did the job up front keeping them to 110 and it’s good to get across the line in what’s been a pretty tough-fought series,” Santner said.

“It got quite tight in the end today. Credit to Bangladesh, their bowlers have bowled extremely well. They put us under some real pressure again.”

After asking Bangladesh to bat first on a lively Bay Oval pitch, Santner claimed 4-16 off his four overs, stifling an innings that was already struggling at 41-3 when he was introduced.

Seamers Tim Southee, Adam Milne and Ben Sears all took two wickets.

Milne (2-23) removed Bangladesh captain and top-scorer Najmul Hossain Shanto for 17 when he skied a full-pitched delivery to point.

Shanto rued the fact that he and four other Bangladesh batsmen reached double figures, but all failed to convert into a substantial score.

“The bowlers did a great job but the batsmen didn’t get runs today,” he said.

“In T20s the top of the order is very important. Our batsmen got starts, like 15 or 17, but they’re not taking the game deep.”

Four of New Zealand’s top order were dismissed for one run and when Finn Allen followed after scoring 38, Neesham held the innings together as the storm clouds gathered, with solid support from Santner who was unbeaten on 18.

Seam bowler Shoriful Islam took 2-17 off 3.4 overs.

Bangladesh won the first game in Napier on Wednesday by five wickets, before Friday’s second match was abandoned after 11 overs because of rain in Mount Maunganui.

Festive joy in Saudi among Indian Christian community

Jeddah: The Indian Christian expatriate community in Saudi Arabia was overwhelmed and enthusiastic as the tiny yet powerful professional community celebrated Christmas on the weekend in the country. Some Telugu Christian families who celebrated the festival for the first time in Saudi Arabia still couldn’t believe that they celebrated Christmas.

“Although we have been living here for some years now, this our maiden celebration of the festival among compatriots in an Islamic dominant country such as Saudi Arabia”, said Kiran and Preethi, duo of wife and husband hailing from Hyderabad and working in Jeddah.

“There are no words to describe our joy when we participated in the function at the Indian consulate which is simply unbelievable”, they added.

The cultural programmes performed by different prayer groups thrilled the audience.

The nativity scene, birth of Jesus, and other cultural shows by Syro Malabar Church mesmerized people.

The Telugu Christian Community under the banner of GTC performed a hand maimax laser show that impressed the audience. Also, Telugu women sung carols in praise of Lord Jesus in traditional Indian attire was one the salient feature in the festival.

Consul General Shahid Alam formally cut the cake flanked by other senior diplomats and Christian community leaders. Arpana and Jovana Rechel anchored the event. Peter Romald welcomed the audience while Pastor Hanok Abhinay of Kurnool delivered the message, and Sushila Joseph proposed a vote of thanks.

Indian Christian Community (ICC), an umbrella body of various Indian Christian groups organized the event with the support of the Indian consulate.

Alarm goes off in Russia border city day after deadly attack

According to the latest data, 24 people, including four children, were killed and 108 wounded in that attack. The strike also caused widespread destruction, damaging dozens of apartment blocks and more than 50 vehicles, Gladkov said.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Saturday’s attack used a Czech-made RM-70 Vampire multiple-launch rocket system, as well as domestically produced Olkha rockets armed with cluster bombs. The latter type of weapon, which disperses a large number of submunitions over a wide area, is banned in more than 100 countries due to the high risk it poses to civilians.

Russian officials have called Saturday’s tragedy a “terrorist act” and claimed that Western countries, which have provided Kiev with massive amounts of military aid, were complicit in the attack.

While Moscow has claimed that a Czech-made weapon was used in the barrage and called an urgent UN Security Council meeting on the matter, Prague’s representative to the organization did not attend the session. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky said that Prague “refuses to let Russia summon us anywhere” and does not want to “serve the aggressor’s propaganda.”

However, Moscow suggested that the Czech Republic skipped the meeting because it was afraid to publicly respond to the accusations.

Venice Set To Prohibit Large Tourist Groups, Loudspeakers

Venice Set To Prohibit Large Tourist Groups, Loudspeakers

Concerns about tourist overload are prompting more Venice residents to consider relocating.

Venice is set to prohibit the use of loudspeakers and limit tourist groups to a maximum of 25 people to mitigate the impact of mass tourism on the Italian city. These new regulations, scheduled to take effect in June, aim to address issues of confusion and disturbances caused by loudspeakers, as reported by the BBC, quoting a statement from the city.

Overtourism is acknowledged as a pressing concern for Venice, one of Europe’s most visited destinations. In September, the city implemented a trial for a fine of approximately 5 Euros (Rs 460) for daily visitors.

The recent measures aim to improve the management of organised groups in the historical centre, as quoted by Elisabetta Pesce, the official with responsibility for the city’s security.

Despite its modest size of 7.6 sq km (2.7 sq miles), Venice welcomed nearly 13 million tourists in 2019, according to the Italian National Statistics Institute.

Concerns about tourist overload are prompting more Venice residents to consider relocating. Citizen associations are conducting studies to monitor bed availability for both tourists and locals.

In July, UNESCO experts proposed adding Venice to the list of endangered world heritage sites due to climate change and mass tourism. Although Venice was not included on the list, Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano highlighted recognition for efforts to address issues, such as implementing an anti-flooding system and approving an entry fee for tourists, as reported by the BBC.

In 2021, large cruise ships were barred from entering Venice’s historic centre following pollution concerns and potential damage to the city’s foundations after a ship collision in the Giudecca canal.

'We Repeatedly Proved...': Vladimir Putin's New Year's Eve Address

Vladimir Putin described 2024 as the “year of the family” (File)

Moscow, Russia:

President Vladimir Putin praised the Russian army in his New Year’s Eve address Sunday, calling for “unity” in a scaled-back speech that did not explicitly mention the conflict in Ukraine.

In stark contrast to last year, when the Kremlin chief was flanked by soldiers in uniform, Putin described 2024 as the “year of the family” in front of the traditional backdrop of the Kremlin.

“We have repeatedly proved that we are able to solve the most difficult tasks and will never back down, because there is no force that can separate us,” Putin said in the address, aired on state TV.

“To all those who are on duty, on the front line of the fight for truth and justice,” Putin said, “you are our heroes. Our hearts are with you. We are proud of you, we admire your courage.”

The televised New Year’s Eve speech, which continues a tradition started by Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, is a holiday staple in Russia, watched in millions of households.

It is aired just before midnight in each of Russia’s 11 timezones, and is usually a summary of events of the past year as well as wishes for the year ahead.

Double suicide: Whereabouts of woman’s husband remains untraced

Initially, police believed that Murugan went outside to sell papads and said the reason behind the suspected suicides would be known only after questioning him.

Mancherial: Whereabouts of a man, whose wife and daughter were found dead in a suspected case of suicide in Mandamarri, remain unknown, making investigation into the case quite tough.
Dhanalaxmi (35), wife of a small-time papad manufacturer Mahendra Devara Murugan, and their daughter Jeevani were found hanging in their residence in Deepaknagar of Mandamarri on Tuesday night. Their son Siddharth woke up to find the bodies while Murugan was not at home. The couple hailed from Tamil Nadu.

Initially, police believed that Murugan went outside to sell papads and said the reason behind the suspected suicides would be known only after questioning him. However, Murugan has not returned home even five days after the incident. His mobile phone remained switched off, raising doubts. His location was last found in Bellampalli as per call data record analysed by the police.

Mandmarri Inspector Mahender Reddy said that Murugan left home as part of his business on Tuesday at 5 pm. Murugan last called his three borrowers from Mandamarri on the same day and told them that he would repay his loans by 9 pm on that day, but did not keep his word so far. Efforts are being made to trace him at the earliest, police stated. Murugan’s family members were advised to lodge a complaint over his missing.

Police said that Murugan had once left home and did not come back for quite a long time to evade repayment of loans in the past. Locals said that he migrated to Mandamarri from Madurai after registering losses in his business in search of livelihood. They suspected that financial crisis might have forced the woman to commit suicide.

Netanyahu between two equally unpleasant choices

“Netanyahu is between the devil and the deep blue sea. He must either step down and stand trial before settlers, or continue the Gaza onslaught and face justice at the hands of fighters from the al-Qassam Brigades – Hamas’s military wing,” Izzat al-Rishq, a member of the political bureau of Hamas, said late on Saturday.

He added that Netanyahu is now isolated and rejected even by high-profile figures of the regime’s war machine.

“Crest-fallen Netanyahu is trying to escape from his repeated failures,” Rishq said, noting that Netanyahu, despite having declared opposition to any of Hamas’ provisions, has come to the terms that it is the Palestinian resistance front that is imposing conditions and has the upper hand on the battlefield.

“By God’s grace, resistance fighters will emerge victorious at the end of the Gaza war, and will terminate all forms of the Zionist occupation,” the senior Hamas official said.

The fate of Netanyahu and the Israeli military hangs in the balance amid developments on the ground in Gaza. Israelis will eventually rise up against him as they are really fed up with his flat-out lies, Rishq continued.

“In the face of fallen victims as well the courage and resilience that Palestinians have put up, the aggression on Gaza must stop before anything else. The Palestinian nation will not settle for less than complete removal of all restrictions and livelihood in full freedom,” the Hamas official pointed out.

On Saturday evening, Israeli minister of military affairs Yoav Gallant and war cabinet member Benny Gantz turned down Netanyahu’s request to hold a joint press conference with him.
