Kerala Couple, Daughter Arrested For Kidnapping Girl For Rs 10 Lakh Ransom

The motive behind the kidnapping was allegedly the family’s pressing financial issues (Representational)

Kollam (Kerala):

A businessman, his wife, and their YouTuber daughter were arrested by the Kerala Police here on Saturday for allegedly kidnapping a six-year-old girl earlier this week, demanding a ransom of Rs 10 lakh. The child was later abandoned on a public ground in Kollam after the incident gained widespread attention.

Police said the accused Padmakumar, an engineering graduate, his homemaker wife Anitha Kumari, and their daughter Anupama Padman, who boasts a substantial following on YouTube, were taken into custody based on a combination of scientific, digital, and circumstantial evidence.

ADGP M R Ajithkumar said that information provided by civilians, who recognised the voice of one of the accused during ransom negotiations, played a crucial role in their apprehension.

The kidnapping, which unfolded earlier this week, captured public attention when the perpetrators abandoned the minor girl on a public ground in this southern district.

The police, aided by a portrait of Padmakumar drawn with input from the kidnapped girl, successfully tracked down the accused.

The motive behind the kidnapping was allegedly the family’s pressing financial issues.

“The abduction was a meticulously planned one. The accused had been planning the crime for the last one year and was looking for a suitable child to kidnap,” Ajithkumar told reporters outside Pooyappally Police station where the case was registered.

Padmakumar was engaged in several businesses, including the operation of a local cable TV network, but is said to be suffering from an acute financial crisis post Covid.

“As per his statement, he had debt to the tune of over Rs five crore. He had an immediate need of Rs 10 lakh which prompted the family to carry out the crime,” the official said.

Police suspected that Anitha Kumari was the brain behind the kidnapping.

The ADGP also said the accused had tried to kidnap the child two times before but didn’t succeed as she was accompanied by her mother and grandmother on the occasions.

Though 20-year-old Anupama had good earnings through social media, it suddenly stopped some time back due to technical reasons, which also prompted the family to think about some other easy way to earn money, the officer added.

He lauded the special police team under DIG Nishanthini who probed the case and arrested culprits in a short span of time.

The six-year-old girl, who was kidnapped while going home from tuition with her elder brother, was found abandoned at a public ground here the next day.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Palakkad confirmed that the investigation had achieved significant progress.

“The main accused are in police custody. Police will divulge further details,” Vijayan told a press conference here.

He lavished praise on the police force for apprehending the accused.

A remarkable investigation was carried out by the police in the case which helped take the accused into custody within a short span of time, he added.

A sincere and dedicated probe carried out by the police helped to nab the real accused in a short time, the CM said.

Vijayan also slammed the opposition Congress for criticising the police with regard to the investigation of the incident.

Can A Woman Be Charged With Rape? Supreme Court To Examine

The woman has been granted protection from arrest for four weeks.

New Delhi:

Can a woman be booked in a rape case? The Supreme Court has agreed to examine this question after a woman petitioned it for anticipatory bail in a rape case also involving her son.

The Supreme Court has asked the Punjab government to respond to the plea filed by a 61-year-old woman who has been implicated in the case filed by her daughter-in-law.

While agreeing to examine the issue, a bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Sanjay Karol granted the woman protection from arrest and directed her to cooperate with the investigation.

“Issue notice, returnable in four weeks. In the meantime, the petitioner is protected from arrest. But she is expected to cooperate with the investigation of the crime,” the bench said.

At the outset, advocate Rishi Malhotra, who appeared for the woman, argued that all other penal sections in the FIR are bailable barring the charge under Section 376(2)(n) IPC (repeated rape). Conviction under the section entails imprisonment of not less than 10 years and may extend to sentence for life.

Referring to a Supreme Court judgement, Mr Malhotra submitted a woman cannot be charged with rape.

According to the case, the complainant was initially in a long-distance relationship with the US-based elder son of the woman, a widow, but they had never met in person.

The FIR states that the complainant started living with the widow after entering into wedlock with her son at a virtual marriage ceremony.

Later, the younger son of the widow visited them from Portugal. The widow has claimed that after the arrival of her younger son, the complainant and her family pressured her to end the informal marriage with her elder son. When the younger son was about to leave for Portugal, the complainant insisted that he take her along but he left alone.

As tension mounted between the two families, a compromise was arrived at and the widow gave the complainant Rs 11 lakh for ending the marriage with her elder son.

The complainant then approached the local police and lodged an FIR against the widow and her younger son, accusing them of rape and other charges.

Israel launches intense shelling of Gaza on second day of truce collapse

The Israeli regime launched an intense bombardment campaign on various areas in the Gaza Strip on Saturday as the occupying entity presses ahead with its genocidal war against Palestinians in the besieged territory for a second day in a row after the truce collapsed.

Palestine’s official Wafa news agency said the Israeli occupation army continued its violent bombardment of the Gaza Strip by land, sea and air since the early hours of Saturday, which resulted in “killing and injuring dozens of civilians.”

The news agency said the Israeli aggression mainly targeted the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Yunis.

“Israeli warplanes have intensified their bombardment of the eastern and central areas of Khan Younis since the pre-dawn hours,” Wafa said, adding that the attacks leveled to the ground four homes as well as three mosques in al-Qarara, northeast of Khan Younis.

Occupation warplanes also launched a series of violent raids on homes in Sheikh Nasr and Bani Suhaila in Khan Younis, according to the news agency.

In the central Gaza Strip, the Israeli warplanes and gunboats continued to bomb several areas in Deir al-Balah. The warplanes also targeted homes in al-Tawam, Sheikh Radwan, Jabalia, and Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip.

Palestine’s Shehab news agency confirmed the Israeli aggression on Saturday, saying the Israeli regime’s warplanes bombed “more than 50 targets in an intensive attack on the Khan Yunis area.”

The news agency added that the occupying entity had attacked more than “400 targets” in the Gaza Strip since the end of the truce, resulting in the death of over 200 people, the injury of at least 589 others and destruction of more than 20 homes.

Israel waged its war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas launched an operation against the occupied territories on that day in response to the Israeli regime’s decades-long campaign of bloodletting and devastation against Palestinians.

Tel Aviv also blocked water, food, and electricity to Gaza, plunging the coastal strip into a humanitarian crisis.

The truce, which was extended twice, began on November 24. It had paused brutal Israeli strikes on Gaza that began in early October and killed more than 15,000 Palestinians.

Iran scorns US’ ‘invalid’ report on terrorism

In a statement on Saturday, Nasser Kan’ani dismissed the annual country reports on terrorism released by the US government, saying, “The US’ annual country reports on terrorism, which are compiled with the agenda of depicting the dissenting countries as a threat, lack international credibility and acceptability and do not change the realities of the countries’ genuine efforts at serious fight against terrorism.”

He said the international community and the world’s public opinion are now in a better position to realize and judge the US government’s paradoxical activities in the battle against terrorism 20 years after the release of those “one-sided and biased” American reports began.

“The US, by changing the facts and fabricating false stories, cannot bring into question the resistance movement’s legitimate and internationally-recognized measures in the region in the struggle against occupation with the false tag of terrorism,” Kan’ani stated.

It has become clear that the US is the main government held accountable for creating, training, arming, and guiding the ISIL terrorists, he noted, adding that Washington is also the chief side complicit in the crimes against humanity and the genocide of Palestinians as it has provided full support for the Israeli regime’s state-sponsored terrorism, provided the Zionists with various bombs and lethal weapons, repeatedly vetoed the UN Security Council’s resolutions on ending the bombardment of Gaza, and had a role in the brutal massacre of over 15,000 civilians in Gaza.

While the US government has admitted that former American officials have been involved in the assassination of late Iranian commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, it continues to shirk responsibility for that crime and punishment for its perpetrators and plays the role of a plaintiff in a shameful manner, Kan’ani stated.

He also took a swipe at the US for sponsoring and sheltering terrorists, facilitating their travels, and financing them, saying Washington that has created a safe haven for the ringleaders of the terrorist Mujahedin-e-Khalq Organization (MKO) and other terrorists and saboteurs in order to advance its foreign policy plots has officially resorted to terrorism as a tool and continues hypocrisy in this regard.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns the US’ support for terrorism and will keep up efforts to disclose the US government’s blatant hypocrisy regarding terrorism,” the spokesman concluded.

In its latest country report on terrorism, the US State Department accused Iran of sponsoring terrorism and facilitating a wide range of terrorist and other illicit activities around the world.

Normalizing ties with Zionists suspended after Gaza war

In an interview for Mehr News Agency, Abolfazl Amouei touched upon the consequences of the Zionist attack on the Gaza Strip and the killing of thousands of Palestinian people, especially women and children since October 7.

Regarding the achievements of the Palestinian Resistance in the war with Zionists, the Iranian lawmaker said that the Al-Aqsa Storm Operation was an extraordinary achievement due to its coherence and design which imposed an intelligence failure on the Zionist regime.

This operation, which dealt a heavy blow to the Zionist regime, completely disintegrated the Zionist army, he added.

He noted that the Al-Aqsa Storm Operation severely challenged the security and prosperity prospect that Netanyahu and the leaders of the Zionist regime were trying to build to introduce themselves as one of the poles of new technologies in the West Asian region in recent years.

Referring to the Resistance of Palestinians in response to attacks of the Zionist regime he stressed that despite the great pressure on the people of northern Gaza to move to the south, they resisted and several hundred thousand residents of northern Gaza still remain in the north, standing by the Resistance movement Hamas.

He pointed out that the ground operation of the Zionist regime in Gaza has not brought any achievement for them and it shows that the Resistance movement has provided good security cover and information for its forces.

Unprecedented million rallies have been held in different parts of the world and this kind of support has not been seen in the world and in the last 50 years and after the Vietnam War, He stated, emphasizing that the public opinion of the world has become more aware of the atrocities of the Zionist regime and their companionship with the Palestinian people has become more than before. In fact, the Palestinian resistance also advanced the narrative war and became effective in this field as well with its own oppression.

He continued that before the Al-Aqsa Operation, the Zionist regime tried to legitimize itself by normalizing its relations with the Islamic countries of the region, noting that after the Gaza war, the normalization process has been suspended and the pressure of the public opinion of the Islamic and Arab world has made the rulers of these countries wary of any getting closer to the Zionist regime.

The senior lawmaker went on to say that the future of Gaza and the region will have important changes after the war, adding that the geopolitics of West Asia and even the international geopolitics will be completely different after the Al-Aqsa Operation.

Amoei further said that the Gaza battlie will cast doubt on the existence and nature of the Zionist regime in various fields,  adding that a question mark hangs over the survival of the Zionist regime in international relations.

The senior Iranian lawmaker further pointed out that the Gaza battle undermined the the US and Western Europe’s morality when it comes to human rights issues, noting that from now on the ability of the West to influence human rights or world legal issues will decrease compared to the past.

Regarding the influence of Gaza war on Ukraine development, he noted that a large part of the weapons given to Ukraine by the West used to come from the Zionist regime, noting that the Gaza battle will weaken Ukraine in the face of Russia and give Russia a superior position.

The spokesman of the Iranain parliament’s National Security Commission stated that Biden has spent his political future on supporting Netanyahu and his government despite the disagreement of American Jews about US unreserved support of the Zionist regime.

Regarding the establishment of a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, Amouei said that the Zionist regime has not made any considerable achievements in the war and its prolongation leads to the downfall of the regime.

Amouei emphasized that Iran’s diplomacy has been active regarding the Palestine issue, adding that Iran most important agenda has been trying to stop the bombing and violence against the Palestinian people.

The lawmaker further pointed out that the National Security Commission of the Iranian Parliament has so far sent delegations to Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Qatar and Russia and also sent messages to officials of other countries in support of the Palestinian people.
