US, Others Looking At 'Variety Of' Options For Future Of Gaza After Hamas

Israel has vowed to wipe out Hamas in a relentless onslaught in the Gaza Strip.

Washington:

The United States and other countries are looking at “a variety of possible permutations” for the future of the Gaza Strip if Hamas militants are removed from control, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday.

Blinken told a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing the status quo of Palestinian Islamist group Hamas being in charge of the densely populated enclave could not continue, but Israel did not want to run Gaza either.

Between those two positions were “a variety of possible permutations that we’re looking at very closely now, as are other countries,” Blinken said.

What would make most sense at some point, Blinken said, was an “effective and revitalized Palestinian Authority” to have governance over Gaza, but it was a question whether that can be achieved.

“And if you can’t, then there are other temporary arrangements that may involve a number of other countries in the region. It may involve international agencies that would help provide for both security and governance,” Blinken said.

In retaliation to the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that killed more than 1,400 people in Israel, the worst assault on Jews since the Holocaust, Israel has vowed to wipe out Hamas in a relentless onslaught in the Gaza Strip, however it does not appear to have an obvious endgame in sight.

On Tuesday, Palestinian health officials said at least 50 Palestinians were killed when Israeli air strikes hit a densely populated refugee camp in north Gaza.

U.N. and other aid officials said civilians in the besieged Palestinian enclave were engulfed by a public health catastrophe, with hospitals struggling to treat casualties as electricity supplies petered out.

Washington has been speaking with Israel, as well as other countries in the region on how to govern the Palestinian enclave if Israel triumphed on the battlefield, but a clear plan was yet to emerge.

Among the options that are being explored by the United States and Israel was the possibility of a multinational force that may involve U.S. troops, or Gaza be placed under United Nations oversight temporarily, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

Some of U.S. President Joe Biden’s aides are concerned that while Israel may craft an effective plan to inflict lasting damage to Hamas, it has yet to formulate an exit strategy.

“We have had very preliminary talks about what the future of Gaza might look like,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a briefing. “I expect that it will be the subject of a good bit of diplomatic engagement moving forward,” he added.

“It feels a bit uncomfortable to breathe while running due to pollution now as compared to in the summer months. I face congestion. We need to remain careful and take all precautions,” said a morning walker near Mayur Vihar.

In the Delhi University area and Pusa, the quality of air was recorded as ‘very poor’ with AQI at 391 and 311, respectively at 7 am today.

The AQI from 0 to 100 is considered good, while from 100 to 200 it is moderate, from 200 to 300 it is poor, and from 300 to 400 it is said to be very poor and from 400 to 500 or above it is considered as severe.

Last week, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that a 15-point winter action plan is being implemented one by one to curb pollution.

“Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had earlier announced a 15-point winter action plan to curb the pollution caused by vehicles, biomass burning, dust, etc. Now this winter action plan is being implemented on the ground one by one to reduce pollution in the national capital,” Rai had told ANI.

The Delhi Minister added that since one of the major causes of pollution is vehicles, they have started the ‘Red Light on, Gaadi off’ campaign on October 26.”Now the data says that in AQI the level of particulate matter (PM) 10 is decreasing and that of PM2.5 is increasing. This means that pollution caused by vehicles and biomass burning is increasing. For this, the ‘Red Light on, Gaadi off’ campaign has been started,” the Delhi minister had said.

That's A 1st! Rizwan Asks Rival Batter If He's Out Before DRS Call. Watch

Pakistan cricket team finally registered a win at the Cricket World Cup after four losses at the trot. The Babar Azam-led Pakistan cricket team had come into the game against Bangladesh needing a win to stay relevant in the semi-final race at the Cricket World Cup. They achieved the target in some fashion with a seven-wicket win over the Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh. The win took Pakistan to six points in seven games. They need to win their remaining games against New Zealand and England and hope for other teams’ results go their way to have chance to enter the last-four stage.

Bowling first, Pakistan restricted Bangladesh to just 204 with Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Wasim Jr picking three wickets each. While the bowlers were perfect, there was one moment in the game which left everybody in splits. In the 43rd over, Shaheen Afridi bowled a delivery to Taskin Ahmed down the leg. The ball looked like brushing off the pads. While Babar Azam turned down wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan’s appeal for a DRS, the latter was so desperate that went ahead and asked the batter about where the ball had hit.

Fans on Twitter were truly left stunned seeing the Pakistan wicket-keeper’s unique manner to handle the subject.

Riding on Fakhar Zaman, Abdullah Shafique‘s half-centuries and bowlers’ brilliance Pakistan registered a 7-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Openers Zaman and Shafique scored 81 and 68 respectively while Mohammad Rizwan slammed an unbeaten 26, guiding their team to a 7-wicket triumph. For Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz bagged a three-wicket haul.

Chasing a small total of 205, Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman was unstoppable in the opening Powerplay. During this time, the southpaw slammed four borders. This contained two outstanding sixes off Taskin Ahmed and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, respectively.

He got good support from his partner, Abdullah Shafique, who garnered four stylish fours of his own in the first 10 overs.

Hyderabad: An Indian student in the US state of Indiana is battling for life after a 24-year-old man stabbed him at a public gym thinking that the victim was going to “assassinate” him, a media report said.

The student has been identified as T Varun Tej, a resident of Mamilligudem in Khammam.

Jordan Andrade was arrested after he drove a knife into Varun’s head at Planet Fitness Club’s massage room in the Valparaiso city of Indiana on Sunday morning, The Times of Northwest Indiana reported.

Andrade told Valparaiso Police that “someone” told him that Varun is “creepy” and “threatening” and feared that he would “assassinate him”.

Varun was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital due to the severity of his injury, and has been reportedly given a zero to five per cent chance of survival as the knife was driven into his temple and ultimately the brain stem. Andrade is lodged at the Porter County Jail and has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery.

Police said they walked into the gym’s massage chair room to find a large amount of blood on one of two chairs and a folding knife on the counter that reportedly belonged to Andrade. They found Varun seated in a massage chair with a head injury.

According to a charging document, Andrade said he made sure to react the “right way” after determining that Varun posed a threat to him. “Andrade then described (the man) as a threat to him so he ‘just reacted’,” police said. Andrade said Varun never got out of his chair and did not instigate any contact, “stating that the only physical contact was (the man) attempting to push Andrade off him after Andrade started attacking” him, police said. Other gym goers described Varun as someone who “generally kept to himself, was quiet and reserved”.

Andrade is scheduled to make an initial appearance on the charges Wednesday afternoon before Porter Superior Court Judge.

Varun’s father Ramurthy met Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar and urged him to talk to Ministry fo External affairs to provide better treatment for his son.

Man in Kanpur divorces wife over eyebrow shaping

Kanpur: A Muslim woman in Kanpur has lodged a police complaint against her husband who pronounced triple talaq over the phone from Saudi Arabia when he learnt that she had shaped her eyebrows.

The woman, Gulsaiba, married Salim in January 2022. He is currently employed in Saudi Arabia.

According to Gulsaiba’s statement to the police, after her husband left for Saudi Arabia on August 30, her in-laws began harassing her for dowry.

She further told the police that her husband was “old fashioned” and raised objections over her fashion choices.

Gulsaiba said that on October 4, her husband initiated a video call during which he noticed her newly shaped eyebrows.

He questioned her about it, and despite her explanations that she got her eyebrow shaped because she felt her face did not look good with unruly hair, he became angry.

According to Gulsaiba, Salim threatened her and said: “You went ahead and shaped your eyebrows despite my objections. From today, I free you from this marriage.”

He then pronounced talaq three times and disconnected the call, after which he did not answer further attempts at communication, said Gulsaiba.

Gulsaiba’s complaint has led to the registration of an FIR against her husband, along with five other individuals, including her mother-in-law.

“I had been married for only a year. My husband, who had previously disrespected me, has now given me triple talaq. I want the police to take appropriate action against him,” she added.
