Aishwarya Rai’s birthday: Best performances from ‘Devdas’ to ‘PS-I’

Mumbai: Actor Aishwarya Rai, an epitome of beauty and talent has on several occassions won the hearts of her fans with her glamorous look and amazing acting skills.

With Mani Ratnam’s semi-biographical Tamil political drama ‘Iruvar’, the actor had an outstanding film debut in 1997. In the same year, her first Hindi film ‘Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya’ was also released. Later, she acted in movies such as ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Mohabbatein’, ‘Dhoom 2’, among others.

As the stunning actor turns a year older today, let us look at some of her remarkable performances.

Iruvar (1997)

‘Iruvar’, Mani Ratnam’s semi-biographical Tamil political drama, was an impressive celluloid debut for the actor. Few actors get to launch their careers with dual parts, but Rai Bachchan was an exception. She played the dual roles of Pushpavalli and Kalpana with seasoned delicacy, the latter being a fictionalised version of former politician and actor Jayalalithaa.

Devdas (2002)

‘Devdas’, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is considered a classic film. Devdas Mukherjee (SRK)’s life takes a turn for the worst once his family stops him from marrying Paro (Aishwarya Rai). At the 48th Filmfare Awards, she won the Best Actress award for her remarkable performance.

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999)

The actor played Nandini, a young girl filled with liveliness and humour. She played the role with three shades, deep love for Sameer (Salman Khan), callousness for her spouse Vanraj (Ajay Devgn), and eventual regret for him. Rai infused the character with both charisma and maturity.
Guru (2007)

Rai played the wife of Abhishek Bachchan’s character Guru, who was a bit of a renegade with a strong mind of her own. Aishwarya Rai played a tough lady who recognised her rights and refused to submit to patriarchal diktats in the drama seGujaratjarat in the 1950s.
Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022)

Aishwarya Rai’s mesmerizing beauty left everyone awestruck in this movie. In a film based on Kalki’s epic saga of the Chola dynasty and the power struggle for the coveted throne, Aishwarya played Nandini, a character who is far more intelligent and calculative than any of the mighty kings and who knows how to use her beauty to her advantage.

Canada’s Khalistan support sparks concerns of political opportunism

PM Trudeau’s Position on Khalistan Extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar Bolsters Support for Extremist Cause

Updated On – 10:55 AM, Wed – 1 November 23

Canada’s Khalistan support sparks concerns of political opportunism

New Delhi: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau‘s apparent support for Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar sets an example of the risks taken by these politicians playing vote-bank politics to win elections, even when it means aligning with extremist fringe elements, as author Dr Jasneet Bedi wrote in Khalsa Vox.

Canadian PM Trudeau’s stance on Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar and his support seem to have strengthened the Khalistan extremists.

Noting that such actions could impact Canada, he wrote that these troubling incidents underscore the need to address the perils of the dangerous game before it jeopardises domestic peace, harmony and security.

This dangerous game of political opportunism poses a clear and present danger to host countries like Canada, Khalsa Vox reported.

The immense support for Nijjar, who has ties to the terrorist outfit Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), has left many Canadians puzzled.

Although political leaders should represent unity, diversity and the well-being of all citizens, it seems that electoral considerations sometimes lead them to a more perilous and unfaithful path, which further undermines the values that Canada stands for.

Moreover, Trudeau’s blame on India for Hardeep Singh Nijjar‘s death without providing concrete evidence only adds to their division, reported Khalsa Vox.

Such actions not only boost extremism but further crumble trust between nations, which is somehow important for maintaining international peace and cooperation.

Notably, it is time for politicians to prioritise the well-being and unity of their own country over these short-term political gains.

Furthermore, one extreme consequence of this rising extremism is the rise in drug-related cases and crimes, where many of them have involved Sikhs, including truckers to manage the logistics, according to Khalsa Vox.

Although it is important to avoid generalising an entire community based on the actions of a few, it must be noted that these patterns are a matter of concern.

For instance, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) 2020 report highlighted the connection between some individuals involved with the Khalistan movement and criminal activities like drug trafficking, extortion, money laundering, and kidnapping.

Adding to this, the report also stated that these individuals often have links with Mexican drug cartels, facilitating the smuggling of cocaine into Canada, reported Khalsa Vox.

Meanwhile, in Punjab, these groups are connected with South Asian gangs involved in cross-border smuggling of heroin, according to the RCMP’s findings.

Reportedly, these connections between extremism, criminality and drug trafficking represent a serious threat to the security and well-being of all Canadians.

However, it is important to address these issues with a comprehensive approach, with a focus on education, social integration, and community engagement, rather than alienating any specific group or ethnicity.

Moreover, politicians must be held accountable for their actions, especially when they try to play with the flames of extremism for their electoral gain, Khalsa Vox reported.

"Shami Is Underrated Because He Is Not Bumrah": Ex-England Star

The Cricket World Cup 2023 has been an edition to remember for India pacer Mohammed Shami so far. Shami, who was initially kept out of the team’s playing XI in their first four games, got his opportunity in the fifth match and he returned with a five-wicket haul against New Zealand. In the next game, which was against England, Shami picked four wickets. After playing just two games in the ongoing tournament, the 33-year-old pacer claimed nine wickets.

Former England pacer Steve Harmison said that Mohammed Shami is among the most underrated pacers because he is not Jasprit Bumrah.

“He (Mohammed Shami) is one of the most underrated fast bowlers in world cricket because he is not Jasprit Bumrah. Haris Rauf is the same when it comes to Shaheen Afridi. The ability of Shami being able to move the ball from that off stump either way just makes the two of them a completely different proposition,” said former England speedster Steve Harmison during a discussion at ESPNcricinfo.

Meanwhile, Harmison also praised Bumrah, who has been on the money for India in the ongoing mega event. The right-arm pacer is among the leading wicket-takers in the edition.

Bumrah has claimed 14 wickets in the first 6 matches at an average of 15.07.

“(Jasprit) Bumrah. Bumrah causes so many problems for top-order batters that the other bowlers can feed off. In the times when Australia have been so good, it’s been Mitchell Starc, and the others fed off him. Shaheen Afridi is the same for Pakistan. But I think Bumrah makes for India. His ability to hold length and make a batter not understand where his off stump is is crucial,” said the former England star.

India will take on Sri Lanka in their next match of the tournament on Thursday at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

The Rohit Sharma-led side is holding the top spot in the Cricket World Cup 2023 standings with 12 points.

Bolivia cuts ties with Israel, others recall envoys over Gaza

The three South American nations lambasted the Israeli regime’s attacks on Gaza and condemned the deaths of Palestinian citizens.

Bolivia decided to break diplomatic relations with the Israeli regime in repudiation and condemnation of the aggressive and disproportionate Israeli military offensive taking place in the Gaza Strip, Deputy Foreign Minister Freddy Mamani said at a press conference.

The three countries called for a ceasefire, with Bolivia and Chile pushing for the passage of humanitarian aid into the zone and blaming the Israeli regime for violating international law, Reuters reported.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro called the attacks a “massacre of the Palestinian people” in a post on the social media network X, formerly known as Twitter.

A rider called death

It has been about 20 years that millions of Palestinians are imprisoned in an open-air prison named Gaza by an apartheid occupier regime. A regime which felt no commitment to the peace treaties that itself and its allies have forcefully written for the people of Palestine.

The Gaza war is going on not for two weeks but for more than 70 years between Palestinians and this expansionist occupying regime (even from the perspective of the United Nations resolutions). Hamas and Islamic Jihad are only the natural births of those factious peaces and the frustration of invaded people who perhaps preferred a sudden death to gradual and repetitive invasions.

Netanyahu by choosing plenty of provoking factors like daily massacres even in the West Bank, where there is no dominance of Hamas, and insulting the holy sites to the extent of holding dancing parties in the courtyards of the Al-Aqsa mosque was undoubtedly seeking the purpose of pushing Palestinian Resistance groups into actions that decompress the pressures of the collapse of his extremist cabinet but never estimated this severity of the collapse and breaking of the southern front and the increasing power of the people under siege.

And in the continuation of such a war, the horrible story of the Alma’Madani hospital and the killing of hundreds of innocent women and children who sought refuge in it, and the shameful stance of Netanyahu, who is killing hundreds of people every day, for escaping the consequences of its condemnation is exactly like the fictional story of American propaganda machine for the Russians during the Cold War that a Russian soldier leads twenty German soldiers to be executed in the streets of Berlin after the fall, the family of one of these soldiers recognized him in the midst of this sad parade and they begged the Russian armed soldier to forgive the German soldier for the sake of his wife and children. The Russian soldier knows he has to hand over exactly twenty soldiers for execution. He gave the soldier to his family, but chose another observer citizen among the people and placed him in the queue and moved to the place of execution with other soldiers.

Now, individuals like Netanyahu, who are killing as many Palestinians as the martyrs in the Alma’madani hospital every two or three days, like the same false story of the Cold War soldier and claiming to replace a dead soldier, do they have the moral authority to disown themselves from any killing?

For the people of the Middle East, the experience and the outcome of the alleged peace with all the glitter and celebrations and pompous claims is only a reminder of the painkillers of a doctor named West who wants to hide the patient’s cancer from himself until the moment of his death so this patient called East never pursue his own treatment.

Perhaps the innocent people of Gaza are experiencing these prophetic words of John’s Revelation in the New Testament: “I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him.”

And in this apocalypse, this rider of death, for all the people, is undoubtedly Netanyahu.

It is a very important and fundamental question that Biden, Macron and other supporters of Netanyahu should pay attention to every moment. If the 20-year siege of Gaza did nothing but creating men like Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Middle East, what will the horrible killing of hundreds of women and children every day and the re-displacement of the Palestinians from their homeland create for Israel in the future?

Do this rider of death and his supporters not realize that the massacre and genocide of Palestinians these days is only carrier of a basket for a more intense revenge in the future, which instead of the Nile will start from inside the tunnels of Gaza, and like Moses, with complete surprise, will continue within each and every room of Pharaoh’s palace forever.

AI Anxiety As Computers Get Super Smart

AI Anxiety As Computers Get Super Smart

San Francisco, United States:

From Hollywood’s death-dealing Terminator to warnings from genius Stephen Hawking or Silicon Valley stars, fears have been fueled that artificial intelligence (AI) could one day destroy humanity.

Tech titans are racing toward creating AI far smarter than people, pushing US President Joe Biden to impose emergency regulation and the European Union seeking major legislation to be agreed by the end of this year.

A two-day summit starting Wednesday in London will explore regulatory safeguards against AI risks such as those below.

Job stealer?

The success of ChatGPT from OpenAI has ignited debate about whether “generative AI” capable of quickly producing text, images and audio from simple commands in everyday language is a tremendous threat to jobs held by people.

Automated machinery is already used to do labor in factories, warehouses, and fields.

Generative AI, however, can take aim at white-collar jobs such as lawyers, doctors, teachers, journalists, and even computer programmers.

A report from the McKinsey consulting firm estimates that by the end of this decade, as much as 30 percent of the hours worked in the United States could be automated in a trend accelerated by generative AI.

Boosters of such technology have invoked the notion of a universal basic income in which machines generate wealth that is shared with people freed of the burdens of work.

But it is also possible companies would reap profits of improved efficiencies, leaving those out of work to fend for themselves.

Copycat?

Artists were quick to protest software such as Dall-E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion that are capable of creating images in nearly any style on demand.

Computer coders and writers followed suit, critiquing AI creators for “training” software on their work, enabling it to replicate their styles or skills without permission or compensation.

AI models have been taught using massive amounts of information and imagery found online.

“That’s what it trains on, a fraction of the huge output of humanity,” OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman said at a conference in September.

“I think this will be a tool that amplifies human beings, not replace them.”

Disinformation tools?

Fake news and deepfakes have been around for years but being able to easily crank it out using generative AI raises fears of rampant online deception.

Elections run the risk of being won by those most adept at spreading disinformation, contends cognitive scientist and AI expert Gary Marcus.

“Democracy depends on access to the information needed to make the right decisions,” Marcus said.

“If no one knows what’s true and what’s not, it’s all over”.

Fraud?

Generative AI makes it easier for scammers to create convincing phishing emails, perhaps even learning enough about targets to personalize approaches.

Technology lets them copy a face or a voice, and thus trick people into falling for deceptions such as claims a loved one is in danger, for example.

US President Biden called the ability of AI to imitate people’s voices “mind blowing” while signing his recent executive order aimed at the technology.

There are even language models trained specifically to produce such malicious content.

Human role models

As with other technologies with the potential for good or evil, the main danger is posed by humans who wield it.

Since AI is trained on data put on the web by humans, it can mirror society’s prejudices, biases, and injustices.

AI also has the potential to make it easier to create bioweapons; hack banks or power grids; run oppressive government surveillance, and more.

AI overlord?

Some industry players fear AI could become so smart that it could seize control from humans.

“It is not difficult to imagine that at some point in the future, our intelligent computers will become as smart or smarter than people,” OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever said at a recent TED AI conference.

“The impact of such artificial intelligence is going to be truly vast.”

OpenAI and rivals maintain the goal is for AI to benefit humanity, solving long-intractable problems such as climate change.

At the same time, AI industry leaders are calling for thoughtful regulation to prevent risks such as human extinction.

IAF signs contract with Indian manufacturer for Automatic Weather Stations procurement

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force recently signed a contract with an Indian manufacturer for the procurement of Automatic Weather Stations at 82 IAF locations, according to an official statement from the IAF.

This technological enhancement will provide a major boost to Aerospace Safety by making available real-time weather updates during flying operations and training, the IAF added.

Meanwhile, working on upgrading its fleet of its Russian-origin Su-30 MKI combat aircraft, the Indian Air Force is planning to equip them with an indigenous advanced radar named ‘Virupaaksha’.

The Indian Air Force is working on the upgrade programme of the Su-30MKI fleet under a package worth over Rs 65,000 crore where 84 planes would be upgraded indigenously with advanced made-in-India radars and weapon systems.

“The Virupaaksha is an advanced radar being developed indigenously. This would be a strong push for the indigenization process in the military sector,” defence officials told ANI.

Virupaaksha is one of the names of the God Mahadev, worshipped by Hindus living across the world.

The Indian Air Force has already decided to replace the Israeli radar on the LCA Tejas Mark 1A fighter jet with the indigenous Uttam Actors Electronically Scanned Array radar along with the Angad electronic warfare suite.

The Su-30 fighter jets are the mainstay of the Indian Air Force, with 260 of them already in service. The jets have been inducted in different batches and now form around 50 per cent of the fighter fleet.

The Su-30MKI fleet upgrade plan is also seen by the Indian Air Force as an opportunity for exports, as many countries in southeast Asia and Africa operate the plane and can use these solutions to provide advanced capabilities to their fleets.

India is one of the largest operators of the Su-30MKI fighters and has constantly equipped the planes with new capabilities.

Israel strikes largest refugee camp in Gaza , claims killing top Hamas commander

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported on X that they had eliminated Ibrahim Biari, Commander of Hamas’ Central Jabaliya Battalion. Biari was identified as one of the leaders responsible for the terror attack on October 7th

Israel strikes largest refugee camp in Gaza , claims killing top Hamas commander

Jerusalem: The Israel military on Wednesday claimed responsibility for the airstrike on the Jabaliya refugee camp in Gaza, the largest in the besieged enclave, and said that one of the top Hamas leaders who was responsible for the October 7 assault was killed in the attack.

In a post on X, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said: “IDF fighter jets eliminated Ibrahim Biari, Commander of Hamas’ Central Jabaliya Battalion. Biari was one of the leaders responsible for the murderous terror attack on October 7th.

“The strike damaged Hamas’ command and control in the area and eliminated a large number of terrorists who were with Biari. Additionally, underground terrorist infrastructure collapsed following the strike.

“The IDF reiterates its call to the residents of the area to move south for their safety.”

Jabalya is the largest of the Gaza Strip‘s eight refugee camps, according to the UN.

Defending Tuesday’s airstrike which killed a large number of people and caused catastrophic damages, IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said the refugee camp was targeted to kill Biari, who was “pivotal to the planning and the execution of the October 7 attack”.

“He was actively coordinating, orchestrating, and leading combat activities against the IDF as he was targeted,” CNN quoted Conricus as saying to reporters.

The IDF spokesperson said that Biari’s activities go back to before 2004 when he “masterminded” an attack in Ashdod that led to the killing of 13 Israelis.

“Dozens” of Hamas combatants were also killed in Tuesday’s strike when underground tunnels beneath the camp collapsed, Conricus said, adding that the IDF is still working to obtain a precise number of casualties.

“I understand that that is also the reason why there are many reports of collateral damage and non-combatant casualties. We’re looking into those as well,” Conricus said.

Conricus said they are working to determine the number of civilians who were also killed in the strike, adding that the IDF had considered all factors when making the strike “including the possibilities of non-combatants being affected”.

The spokesperson noted that the military had notified civilians to leave the area through the distribution of leaflets, messages on social media and radio dispatches, CNN reported.

“I want to emphasize the strike was on a military target of significant military importance to the battlefield and for us to be able to be able to obtain our military objectives. That is why it was struck,” Conricus said.

Earlier on Tuesday, the IDF said that its troops on the ground had targeted a Hamas terrorist stronghold in Jabaliya “used for training and execution of terrorism activities”.

“During the ground activity, the troops eliminated approx. 50 terrorists, as well as destroyed entrances to terrorist tunnels and weapons,” it said on X.

Meanwhile, the Hamas has denied that a member was present in the camp during the aistrike.

Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem accused Israel of attempting to justify what he described as a “heinous crime against safe civilians, children, and women in Jabalya camp”.

According to the Gaza-based Interior Ministry, at least 20 homes were completely flattened as a result of the strike.

However, the number of casualties were not immediately confirmed.

Multiple Arab nations have condemned the airstrike on the Jabaliya camp.

While Jordan held “Israel, the occupying power responsible for this dangerous development”, Saudi Arabia “affirmed that the dangerous humanitarian conditions resulting from the continuous escalation cannot be justified at all”, reports CNN.

Iran “condemned in the strongest terms the barbaric attack” and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) warned that “indiscriminate attacks will result in irreparable ramifications in the region”.
