Nagarkurnool: In a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said unlike the former, he tries to keep his promises to the people.

Addressing a public rally in poll-bound Telangana on Wednesday, the Congress MP said, “I am not Narendra Modi. When I make a promise, I strive to fulfill it. Modi-ji said he would ensure that Rs 15 lakh (from the recovered black money parked overseas) is deposited to each of your bank accounts. However, not a penny has been transferred to your accounts yet.

However, lakhs have been piling up in (industrialist Gautam) Adani’s bank account. Unlike Modi-ji, we fulfill our promises.” Also taking aim at Telangana Chief Minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief, K Chandrashekar Rao, Rahul said, “The ties you have are not just with me but also extends to my great grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru, grandmother Indira Gandhi and Priyanka (Gandhi Vadra).

Telangana will poll for its Assembly on November 30 and counting of votes, along with those of four other poll-bound states, has been scheduled for December 3.

The state is set to witness an intriguing triangular contest between the ruling BRS, Congress, and the BJP.

In the previous Assembly elections in 2018, the BRS won 88 of the 119 seats, hogging 47.4 per cent of the total vote share. The Congress finished a distant second with 19 seats and a vote share of 28.7 per cent.

Hyderabad: BRS president and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Wednesday started performing the three-day Rajashyamala Sahitha Subramanyeswara Yagam for the prosperity of the both Telugu-speaking States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Chief Minister and his wife Shobha participated in the rituals of the Yagam being performed at his farmhouse in Erravelli of Markook mandal in Siddipet district on Wednesday.

Under the guidance of Visakhapatnam Sarada Peetham pontiffs Swami Swaroopanandendra and Swatmanandendra, around 170 Ritwiks (Vedic priests) from both the Telugu States, as well as from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, are participating in the Yagam.

The first day of the Yagam witnessed Chandrashekhar Rao and Shobha enter the Yagashala after performing ‘Go Puja’ (cow worship). The ceremonial proceedings included Ganapathi Puja, Punyahavachanam, and Panchagavya Praasana as part of the Yagam rituals. The couple took blessings from Swami Swaroopanandendra, and explained about Yaga Sankalpam (objective) by presenting special clothes to the Ritwiks, before commencing the Yagam proceedings.

On the occasion, Swami Swaroopanandendra conducted a special pooja dedicated to Goddess Rajasyamala, adorned in the Vanadurga avatar. He performed the rituals including Astra Rajarchana and Karkariya Sthapana, invoking blessings from three crore deities to ensure the success of this ambitious Yagam. Later, he performed the consecration of fire and also the installation of Agni (fire) in the Yagashala.

The three-day Yagam encompasses Vedic recitations, homam, and other rituals on the second day. The final day of the Yagam will culminate with the Poornahuthi ceremony.

Swami Swaroopanandendra appreciated the Chief Minister for initiating the Yagam with the earnest desire for development and prosperity of both the Telugu States, benefiting every citizen. He underscored that the Rajashyamala Yagam holds special significance for the Visakha Sri Sarada Peetha. “The profound impact of the Rajshyamala Yagam extends not only to the Chief Minister’s family but to the entire State,” he said. He added that Telangana‘s successful transformation was due to the result of the Yagam performed by Chandrashekhar Rao earlier.

The Chief Minister and his wife also performed the Shatha Chandi Yagam at their farm house on Wednesday, focusing on the well-being of the world. As part of the Yagam, they performed a series of sacred rituals, prayers, and offerings including invoking of Gods, Sahasra Modaka Ganapathi homam, Navagraha homam, Ashtavadhanam and others, led by Vedic scholars.

Sirens in Sevastopol as Ukraine ramps up attacks on Crimea

Russian officials have declared an air raid alert in the Crimean port city of Sevastopol in anticipation of further attacks from Ukraine.

Sirens went off in the city early on Wednesday. Traffic on the Crimean bridge, linking the peninsula to Russia, as well as sea transport, were suspended, Al-Jazeera reported.

The alert comes amid a string of Ukrainian attacks in recent weeks in and around Crimea, which was seized and annexed by Moscow in 2014. Kyiv’s forces have struck a Russian air base on the peninsula and the Black Sea Fleet command post in Sevastopol, as Ukraine seeks to weaken Russia’s control over the water.

Moscow on Tuesday accused Ukraine of the attempted assassination of pro-Russian politician Oleg Tsaryov in Yalta. The Crimean Bridge was attacked in July.

At the same time, amid disappointing results from Kyiv’s much-vaunted counteroffensive, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is seeking to rouse his country ahead of a winter campaign anticipated to be harsh.

Ukraine hopes that weakening Russian forces on the Black Sea will deliver an ultimate victory in the war. The “illusion” of Russia’s domination of Crimea and the Black Sea had been shattered, Zelenskyy told a meeting of the Crimea Platform on October 24.

The attacks have highlighted Kyiv’s growing capabilities, which include naval drones. Meanwhile, Moscow continues bombarding Ukraine from afar with long-range missiles and assault drones.

Last week, the Russian defence ministry said “a set of mine and anti-sabotage measures” in Sevastopol Bay had intercepted three unmanned Ukrainian boats.

Ukraine said on Wednesday that Russia had shelled more than 100 settlements over the last 24 hours; the highest number of attacks on any single day so far in 2023.

New Zealand pacer Matt Henry suffered a right hamstring injury during the ongoing World Cup match against South Africa in Pune on Wednesday. He sustained the injury during the 27th over of South Africa’s innings after having bowled three balls of his sixth over. He looked in discomfort and walked off the field. Although New Zealand team management strapped his hamstring region, enabling him him to continue bowling, it didn’t work out.

The Blackcaps X (formerly Twitter) handle soon issued an update on Henry’s situation, stating that he felt a “tightness in his right hamstring” and “following further assessment he will not return to the field at this stage.” However, it remains unclear whether he would return to bat later in the day if required.

Henry, for now, has become the fourth injured player in the Kiwi team, alongside Lockie Ferguson (achilles), Mark Chapman (calf) and Kane Williamson (thumb).

He has been New Zealand’s second most successful bowler in the showpiece so far after Mitchell Santner.

So far, Henry has scalped 11 wickets from seven matches at an average of 28.63 and an economy rate of 5.79, with best figures of three for 40 against the Netherlands. New Zealand are currently ranked third on the points table with four wins and two losses from six games.

Indian Firms Can Now List Directly On Foreign Stock Exchanges: Centre

Centre allows direct overseas listing of Indian firms, notifies relevant section under companies law

New Delhi:

In a significant move, the government has permitted Indian companies to list on foreign exchanges, subject to certain conditions.

The corporate affairs ministry has notified the relevant section under the companies law in this regard.

Currently, overseas listings by local listed entities are carried out through American Depository Receipts (ADRs) and Global Depository Receipts (GDRs).

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Companies (Amendment) Act, 2020 (29 of 2020), the Central Government hereby appoints the 30th day of October 2023 as the date on which the provisions of section 5 of the said Act shall come into force,” the ministry said in a notification on October 30.

The rules for direct overseas listing of Indian companies are yet to be notified.

Section 5 allows certain classes of public companies to list their securities on permitted stock exchanges in permissible foreign jurisdictions or such other jurisdictions, as may be prescribed.

On October 13, a senior government official said the ministry was looking at various aspects, including the possible eligibility criteria, to prepare the rules for the direct overseas listing of companies.

On July 28, Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government has decided to allow domestic companies to list overseas to help them access capital from the world markets.

In May 2020, the move was announced as part of the Covid relief package.

A senior government official, on July 28, said that initially, the plan is to allow companies to list at the International Financial Services Centre in GIFT City, Ahmedabad, and later, they can list in any of the eight to nine specified overseas jurisdictions.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) had previously recommended a framework within which such direct listing will be facilitated, and it is expected that the Sebi framework will be the basis for future regulation in this area.

Sebi had proposed allowing listings on stock exchanges in ten “permissible jurisdictions” with strong anti-money laundering regulations, including the NYSE, Nasdaq, the LSE and Hong Kong, along with other major exchanges in Japan, South Korea, France, Germany, Switzerland and Canada.

US House Panel Seeks To Ban Federal Purchases Of Chinese Drones: Report

China recently announced export controls on some drones and drone-related equipment. (Representational)

The U.S. House of Representatives’ China committee will introduce a bill to ban the U.S. government from buying Chinese drones, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

Mike Gallagher, the Republican head of the committee, and Raja Krishnamoorthi, the ranking Democrat, will introduce the “American Security Drone Act” on Wednesday, the FT report added.

“This bill would prohibit the federal government from using American taxpayer dollars to purchase drones from countries like China,” Gallagher told the FT.

China recently announced export controls on some drones and drone-related equipment, saying it wanted to safeguard “national security and interests” in response to escalating tension with the United States over access to technology.

The bill was cosigned by Virginia Republican Rob Wittman and Connecticut Democrat Joe Courtney, the FT said, adding that the bill would also bar local and state governments from purchasing Chinese drones with federal grants.

The U.S. House of Representatives’ China committee did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
