There Is Above-Zero Chance That AI Will Kill Us All, Says Elon Musk

There Is Above-Zero Chance That AI Will Kill Us All, Says Elon Musk

London:

Tesla CEO and ‘X’ owner, Elon Musk said on Wednesday that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could endanger the existence of human civilisation.

“There is some chance, above zero, that AI will kill us all. I think it’s slow but there is some chance. I think this also concerns the fragility of human civilization. If you study history, you will realise that every civilisation has a sort of lifespan,” he said.

His remarks came during a media interaction as he arrived to attend the United Kingdom hosted world’s first global Artificial Intelligence (AI) Safety Summit.

Moreover, Musk was also seen having conversations with some of the participants at the summit.

Earlier, a day before attending the AI summit, Musk appeared on comedian Joe Rogan’s podcast, in which he that artificial intelligence (AI), if programmed by people in the “environmental movement”, may lead to the extinction of humanity.

In the podcast, he said, “Actually, what I think the biggest danger is for AI is that if AI is implicitly programmed, I don’t think they explicitly but implicitly programmed with values that led to the destruction of downtown San Francisco. And a bunch of these AI companies are in San Francisco or in the San Francisco Bay Area. Then you could implicitly program an AI to believe that extinction of humanity is what it should try to do.”

He added, “I think the most likely outcome to be specific about it is a good outcome, most likely a good outcome. But it’s not for sure. So i think we’re to be careful how we program the eye and make sure that it is not accidentally antihuman.”

Moreover, the social media company Meta President said, “I’m looking forward to attending the AI Safety Summit in the UK this week. I hope we spend as much time as possible developing much-needed solutions to current problems – for example, on the transparency and detectability of AI-generated content.”

He added, “not just debating speculative future risks about AI models that currently do not exist, and may never possess the autonomy and agency that some people fear.”

The summit underway in UK will see a convergence of governments, academia and companies working in artificial intelligence to debate and identify risks, opportunities and the “need for international collaboration, before highlighting consensus on the scale, importance and urgency for AI opportunities” a statement by the British High Commission read.

Moreover, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said that he will do a live conversation with Elon Musk on X after the AI summit.

PM Sunak posted on X, “In conversation with @elonmusk. After the AI Safety Summit, Thursday night on @x.”

The summit aims to put light on the transformative benefits that AI technology can offer, putting a predominant focus on “education and areas for international research collaborations”.

Representatives from The Alan Turing Institute, The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Ada Lovelace Institute are also among the groups confirmed to attend.

Prime Minister Sunak had last week stated that the summit will focus on understanding the risks such as potential threats to national security including the dangers a loss of control the technology could bring.

On the agenda are discussions around issues likely to impact society, such as election disruption and erosion of social trust.

According to government estimates, the UK already employs over 50,000 people in the AI sector and contributes 3.7 billion pounds to its economy annually. Michelle Donelan will be joined by members of the UK’s Frontier AI Taskforce – including its Chair, Ian Hogarth. The task force was launched earlier this year with an aim to evaluate the risks of frontier AI models (generative language models of AI).

Additionally, on the first day of the Summit, Union Minister of State Rajeev Chandrasekhar participated the AI summit and conveyed India’s thoughts on AI.

On the second day of the summit, Chandrasekhar will contribute to discussions regarding the establishment of a collaborative framework for AI among like-minded nations. He will shed light on India’s perspective concerning AI risks in areas such as disinformation and electoral security.

KCR’s ‘Karataka’, ‘Damanaka’ monikers for Thummala, Ponguleti goes viral

CM KCR at the Praja Ashiravada Sabha public meetings in Sathupally and Yellandu.

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, known for his knack for short stories and well-timed punchlines, stirred up a buzz on social media on Wednesday, with his choice of words to describe opponents in the forthcoming elections. He indirectly targeted former Minister Thummala Nageswara Rao and former MP Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy describing them as ‘Karataka‘ and ‘Damanaka‘.

This witty Telugu reference quickly went viral on social media, leaving netizens to ponder whether it was a playful jab or a subtle dig at the two leaders. For those unfamiliar with the reference, Karataka and Damanaka are sly foxes featured in the ‘Mitra-Bheda‘ series of the Panchatantra Tales. These devious characters sowed discord between a lion and a bull, a parallel that Chandrashekhar Rao cleverly drew between the two sly foxes and the leaders who switched to the Congress and were abusing him.

During the Praja Ashiravada Sabha public meetings in Sathupally and Yellandu, Chandrashekhar Rao cleverly tagged the Congress leaders as ‘Karataka’ and ‘Damanaka,’ hinting at their attempts to obstruct BRS candidates from the erstwhile Khammam district from entering the Telangana State Legislative Assembly. He pointed out that while these leaders were making grandiose claims, it was ultimately the people who would decide the fate of the candidates, and not the “Karataka and Damanaka from Khammam” acting out of sheer arrogance due to their wealth.

Seeking 2nd Straight Win In Rajasthan, Congress Faces Infighting Hurdle

Seeking 2nd Straight Win In Rajasthan, Congress Faces Infighting Hurdle

The shadow of the Sachin Pilot-Ashok Gehlot feud also hangs over the Congress.

Jaipur:

The Congress is facing a fresh hurdle in its quest to buck the ‘revolving door’ trend in Rajasthan by winning a second straight term in the state. After the fourth and fifth lists for the Assembly elections, which will be held on November 25, were released on Tuesday, infighting in the party has come to the fore in the form of protests by Congress workers in some parts of the state, who are unhappy with their chosen leaders being denied tickets.

The protests are emerging as a major headache for the Congress’ central leadership and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who has said that it is not possible to keep everyone happy, but added that those who have been denied tickets may be accommodated in various boards.

The Congress has declared names for 156 of the 200 Assembly seats so far and three sticking points that have emerged are ministers Shanti Dhariwal and Mahesh Joshi and party leader Dharmendra Rathore.

All three had been issued a show-cause notice by the central leadership for their alleged rebellion ahead of the party’s presidential elections last year.

When Ashok Gehlot had emerged as one of the main contenders for the party president’s post and it was later said that he would have to give up the chief ministership of Rajasthan under the ‘one man-one post principle’, at least 72 MLAs close to him had submitted their resignations to the Assembly speaker. The MLAs were opposed to Sachin Pilot being named the next chief minister and had cited his 2020 rebellion against the government.

Ticket Chances?

The protest at the party’s headquarters in Jaipur on Wednesday was over the ticket to Mahesh Joshi, who is the sitting MLA for the Hawamahal constituency, the candidate for which has not even been declared yet. With the high command’s notice over the rebellion and his son facing a rape charge, there are strong indications that the ticket may go to the party’s Jaipur unit president RR Tiwari.

Mr Dhariwal is seen as a close aide of Mr Gehlot and the rebel MLAs had held a meeting at his residence instead of attending the Congress Legislature Party meet on September 25, 2022. Mr Dhariwal had also allegedly said that Mr Gehlot was the “real high command”. At a meeting of the Congress Central Election Committee last month, former party president Sonia Gandhi had allegedly objected to his name being part of the list of probables and had reportedly asked whether those who work against the party could feature in such a list.

Sources have told NDTV, however, that there is a high probability of Mr Dhariwal being given a ticket to avoid antagonising the chief minister. But there is no clarity on whether Dharmendra Rathore will get to contest.

The Congress had played safe so far but the protests have begun after names were announced for some contested seats on Tuesday.

Speaking to NDTV, political strategist Amitabh Tiwari said that while both the BJP and the Congress are facing problems with ticket distribution, the issue is bigger for the Congress because it has not managed to get a simple majority of 101 both times it formed the government in the last three elections.

“Congress faces structural issues in Rajasthan… There are 54 seats it has never won in the last three elections. They need to win 101 of 146 seats to actually form the government and that is why they are falling short – sometimes 96 (seats), sometimes 99. And when they lose, they lose big because their stronghold seats are very less. So rebellion is a big problem for the Congress compared to the BJP, which has never won only in 19 constituencies in the same elections,” he said.

Other Factors

The shadow of the Sachin Pilot-Ashok Gehlot feud, which seems to have simmered down in the run-up to the elections, also hangs over the Congress, but what works in the party’s favour is Mr Gehlot’s clout and sound political instincts. He had managed to win over the support of 12 independents in 2018, who have been given Congress tickets this time.

Mr Pilot has, however, said that he will decide who will be chief minister once the party wins, indicating that he has also been promised something.

Mr Tiwari said the BJP finds it easier to drop sitting MLAs and even replace members of the cabinet like they had done in Gujarat because it is a cadre-based party aligned to an ideology.

“In the Congress, however, the cadre in any Vidhan Sabha seat is split between the top four to five leaders. So when one person gets the ticket, the cadre loyal to the other leaders goes silent and does not, normally, work for the party,” he said.

Mr Tiwari added, “We are seeing issues in the Rajasthan BJP as well, but once a candidate is announced, the ideology ensures that a relatively larger number of workers back him or her.”

Reacting to the protests, the Congress has said that it is not surprising that a party in power is seeing more instances of candidates wanting a ticket and being unhappy when it is denied.

“Tickets are decided based on a process, based on surveys and consultations, and that takes time. It should take time. It is natural for some people to be disappointed. We are the winning party, just look at how much fighting is happening in the losing party. It is natural for there to be some anger in the winning party,” said senior Congress leader Pawan Khera.

OpenAI, Google and other AI systems used news material to train their chatbots: Report

OpenAI, Google and other AI systems used news material to train their chatbots: Report

New York: A top US news media trade group is calling out AI technology companies for scraping news material to train their chatbots, a media report said.

The News Media Alliance, which represents nearly 2,000 outlets in the US, published a research that found developers of generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems, such as OpenAI and Google, have copied and used news, magazine, and digital media content to train their bots, CNN reported.

Importantly, the research indicated that AI companies have trained their bots to give far more credence to information published by those credible publishers versus material elsewhere across the web, the report said.

The research and analysis we’ve conducted show that AI companies and developers are not only engaging in unauthorised copying of our members content to train their products, but they are using it pervasively and to a greater extent than other sources, Danielle Coffey, Chief Executive of the News Media Alliance, said in a statement, CNN reported.

This shows they recognise our unique value, and yet most of these developers are not obtaining proper permissions through licensing agreements or compensating publishers for the use of this content, Coffey added.

This diminishment of high-quality, human created content harms not only publishers but the sustainability of AI models themselves and the availability of reliable, trustworthy information.

In the published white paper, the trade group also rejected arguments that AI bots have simply learned facts by reading various sets of data, like a human being would. The group said it is inaccurate to form such a conclusion because models retain the expressions of facts that are contained in works in their copied training materials (and which copyright protects) without ever absorbing any underlying concepts, CNN reported.

Palestine Fatah movement attacks Israeli regime positions

The Israeli regime has been waging a brutal war against Gaza since October 7, when Hamas-led Palestinian Resistance groups launched their biggest operation against the Zionist regime in years. The sneak attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, came in response to the regime’s intensified crimes against the Palestinian people.

The following are the latest developments about the war on Gaza:

Hezbollah targets two Israeli bases :

Al-Manar TV website which belongs to the Hezbollah Resistance movement in Lebanon reported targeting of the two Zionist sites of Al-Malkiyeh and Al-Bayyad off the two Lebanese border towns of Aytaroun and Blida on Wednesday.

Palestine Fatah movement attacks Israeli positions:

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade (AAMB), the militant wing of the West Bank’s Fatah political faction said in a statement on Wednesday that, “Our fighters bombarded the military position of Al-Ain Lethalatha where there was a gathering of Zionist regime soldiers in Beiri settlement and east of it.”

Israeli airstrikes hit refugee camp for a second day:

Israeli airstrikes hit apartment buildings in a Gaza refugee camp for the second day in a row Wednesday.

Al-Jazeera television, one of the few media outlets still reporting from northern Gaza, aired video of devastation in the Jabaliya camp near Gaza City and of several wounded people, including children, being brought to a nearby hospital.

The isolated Palestinian territory, home to 2.3 million people, is in the grip of a severe humanitarian crisis amid a siege imposed by Israeli regime.

Israel proved to be weak, shows signs of collapse: Iran’s defense minister

Iran’s defense minister Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani

Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Mohammad-Reza Ashtiani says Israel is evincing classic signs of collapse as it was caught off guard by the Palestinian resistance.

Ashtiani told reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting on Wednesday that the huge defeat inflicted on the Israeli regime earlier this month by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas exposed the regime’s weaknesses in terms of military strength which belied its claims about being in possession of advanced military and intelligence systems.

“The Zionist regime was caught off guard … strategically, operationally and tactically. It can be said that this regime with such level of being caught unawares is collapsing,” said the minister.

Some 1,400 Israeli settlers and military forces were killed in Hamas blitz into the Israeli-occupied territories of Palestine near the Gaza Strip on October 7.

The operation has been described by many as the worst and most humiliating defeat suffered by the Israeli regime in over the past 75 years since its creation.

In a bid to fix the damage caused by the operation, Israel has been bombarding Gaza from land, air and sea for more than three weeks, killing nearly 9,000 people in the besieged Palestinian territory.

The international community has called for an immediate stop in the Israeli attacks on Gaza to help reduce the plight of civilians.

Ashtiani said that Israel could suffer an even bigger defeat should the war continue in Gaza, warning that a potential spread of the repercussions of the conflict to other parts of the region could inflict serious harm on the regime.

“The Muslims and freedom-seekers and countries of the region do not have infinite patience. Certainly, all countries have various options on the table and are studying them [to stay safe from such repercussions],” he said.

Telangana is shining while Andhra is in darkness: CM KCR

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao addressing the Praja Ashiravada Sabha public meeting at Yellandu.

Hyderabad: Highlighting the stark contrast between Telangana and its sibling State of Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Wednesday said Telangana, which was once a backward region, had made significant progress under the BRS regime and surpassed Andhra Pradesh in terms of development since bifurcation. He reiterated his confidence in the BRS’ victory in the ensuing Assembly elections to be held on November 30.

Addressing the Praja Ashiravada Sabha public meetings at Sathupally and Yellandu in the erstwhile Khammam district, Chandrashekhar Rao said people living in the border areas of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh could easily differentiate between both the States by looking at the roads in both States.

“Your constituency shares the border with neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. If there is a double-lane road (big road) it is Telangana. If it is a single-lane road (small road) it is Andhra. While Telangana is shining, Andhra is in darkness,” he said.

“You have the same borders with whom we parted. Look at their roads and our roads. That is the proof of our development. If there is a single road, it is Andhra. It is Telangana if there is a double road. They worried for us saying that if we separate from Andhra, how would we survive? But now, we are bigger than them. We have lights. They are in the dark,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the BRS would secure a resounding victory for the third consecutive term in Telangana. Notwithstanding the efforts of opposition parties, the BRS would emerge victorious, “come what may”, he said.

He characterised the election as not just a fight between two candidates, but a battle between two parties with different ideologies. He urged the electorate to consider the performance of different parties over the past decades, drawing a contrast between the Congress party’s rule until a decade ago and the progress made under the BRS in the last 10 years. He encouraged voters to exercise their discretion wisely and choose a capable leader, akin to selecting the best goods while shopping.

Stating that the Sitarama Lift Irrigation Scheme was close to his heart, Chandrashekhar Rao vowed to complete it under the BRS rule after the Assembly polls and return to inaugurate it by himself within a year-and-half. He said besides benefiting the erstwhile Khammam district, the project would also supply water to the Nagarjuna Sagar project ayacut.

He explained about various initiatives of the State government including Rythu Bandhu, Rythu Bima, Mission Bhagiratha and Dalit Bandhu among others, despite them not being part of the election manifesto. He expressed his intent to further increase Aasara social security pensions, distribute gas cylinders at subsidised price of Rs.400, and extend life insurance coverage to all the ration card holders among other initiatives, upon forming the government again.
