New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has mooted the idea of a “vishwakarma bank” which would give loans only to skilled workers, as he hailed the hard work of carpenters and other artisans and called for support to them.

Sharing a video on his social media accounts on Thursday of his visit to the Kirti Nagar furniture market here on September 28, Gandhi said that moving towards connecting the artisans and working people of India, he reached the market and met “carpenter brothers” — the heroes of Asia’s largest wood market.

“Spent a whole day working together as per their daily routine and made a bench for school children,” the former Congress chief said.

“The work of carpenter brothers is a unique blend of hard work and art. What is needed is encouragement and support – to show the way in building big businesses and to make that path smooth with financial assistance,” he said.

In the video, Gandhi is seen working on making a bench for school children and handling various carpenters’ tools.

He also asks carpenters about their problems and whether they would want to bring in more machinery if they had financial assistance.

“What if a Vishwakarma bank is set up? A bank that would give loans only to vishwakarmas, that gives loans only to those people who are skilled workers, wood workers, it will not give loans to anyone else,” Gandhi tells a carpenter, who says that this would really help them, according to the video.

Just days before Gandhi’s visit to Kirti Nagar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched a Rs 13,000-crore PM Vishwakarma Yojana for traditional artisans and craftsmen.

In the video, several carpenters hail Gandhi for his visit to the market and spending time with them.

“What will you do if you get a loan,” Gandhi asked carpenters who said they would buy wood, take big orders, hire artisans and expand their business.

“Spent the whole day with the carpenter brothers of Kirti Nagar, learned their work, and they told me the secret of the ‘chair’,” the former Congress chief said.

Gandhi has been interacting with various sections of society — from mechanics and porters to students and carpenters — asserting that his Bharat Jodo Yatra, which he undertook from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, continues with these interactions.

He recently also visited Ladakh and held interactions with various social groups.

Hezbollah shoots down Israeli regime's drone

The Israeli regime has been waging a brutal war against Gaza since October 7, when Hamas-led Palestinian Resistance groups launched their biggest operation against the Zionist regime in years. The sneak attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, came in response to the regime’s intensified crimes against the Palestinian people.

The following are the latest developments about the war on Gaza:

Hezbollah shoots down Zionist regime’s drone in south Lebanon:

The Israeli army confirms that one of its drones has been shot down by a surface-to-air missile fired from Lebanon.

In response, the military said it attacked the squad that carried out the shooting and the site from where the rocket was launched.

This is the second time since the war started that Hezbollah has hit an Israeli drone.

For the past three weeks, the Lebanese Islamic Resistance group and the Israeli army have been engaged in skirmishes, relatively restricted in their scope and geography. But since last week, we have seen both sides firing deeper into each other’s territory, in a move that experts say marks a new level of confrontation.

On Friday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is scheduled to give his first public speech since October 7.

Kamala Harris and UK PM Rishi Sunak discuss Israel-Hamas conflict

London: The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris met with the United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday and discussed the support for Israel’s right to defend itself as well as the urgent need to increase the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The two leaders also discussed “working together” on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and continued support for Ukraine.

“Today, I met with Prime Minister @RishiSunak and discussed our support for Israel’s right to defend itself and the urgent need to increase the flow of humanitarian assistance into Gaza. Together we are committed to helping civilians in need,” Harris posted on X.

“PM Sunak and I reaffirmed the importance of our strong and enduring partnership. We also discussed our continued support to the people of Ukraine and our work together on AI — including how our new AI Safety Institutes will collaborate with each other,” she added.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has often said the UK supports Israel’s right to defend itself in line with international law and to fight against Hamas after the terror group launched an attack on Tel Aviv on October 7.

“I want to share the deep condolences of the British people and stress that we absolutely support Israel’s right to defend itself in line with international law, to go after Hamas…We also recognise that the Palestinian people are victims of Hamas too,” the British PM said while delivering a joint statement alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu post their private meeting at the prime minister’s office in Jerusalem last week.

Sunak said he was “sorry” to visit Israel in “such terrible circumstances”. He said: “In the last two weeks, this country has gone through something that no country, no people should have to endure, least of all Israel…” He further said he welcomes Israel’s decision to ensure that routes into Gaza will be opened for humanitarian aid to enter.

“I am glad that you made that decision. We will support it…We also want you to win,” Sunak had said.
Upon his arrival, he said: “I am in Israel, a nation in grief. I grieve with you and stand with you against the evil that is terrorism. Today, and always.”

The British PM met families that had their loved ones taken away from them as a result of the war.
Tech billionaire and CEO of X Elon Musk was among those who were seen at the two-day summit led by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that began yesterday at the historic Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire.
According to the UK government, the summit’s objectives are for participants to “work towards a shared understanding of risks” posed by AI and organise a global effort to mitigate them.

The summit underway in UK will see a convergence of governments, academia and companies working in artificial intelligence to debate and identify risks, opportunities and the “need for international collaboration, before highlighting consensus on the scale, importance and urgency for AI opportunities” a statement by the British High Commission read.

Prime Minister Sunak had last week stated that the summit will focus on understanding the risks such as potential threats to national security including the dangers a loss of control the technology could bring.

On the agenda are discussions around issues likely to impact society, such as election disruption and erosion of social trust.

According to government estimates, the UK already employs over 50,000 people in the AI sector and contributes 3.7 billion pounds to its economy annually.

Saudi Arabia Ready For Summer Or Winter World Cup After Rapid Bid Process

Saudi Arabia is prepared to host the 2034 World Cup in summer or winter, its football chief told AFP, as the conservative oil giant was anointed the tournament’s host just weeks after announcing a bid. The quickfire crowning of the alcohol-free desert monarchy, which first allowed non-religious foreign tourists in 2019, comes less than a year after neighbouring Qatar held the first winter World Cup, and the first in the Middle East.

Despite summer temperatures touching 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) in the major cities, Saudi Arabian Football Federation president Yasser al-Misehal did not rule out playing the tournament in the hottest months.

“Of course, we are ready for all possibilities,” Misehal said late on Tuesday at the Asian Football Confederation awards in Doha, when asked about the tournament’s timing.

“Today there are many new technologies that help you with cooling or adding air conditioners in stadiums, in addition to the fact that there are many cities in the kingdom that enjoy a very wonderful atmosphere in the summer,” he said.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter which is undergoing dizzying economic reforms, threw its hat in the ring on October 4, just 27 days before a truncated bidding process for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups ended on Tuesday.

With the 2026 tournament set for the US, Canada and Mexico, and 2030 destined for Spain, Morocco and Portugal with South American involvement, only candidates from the Asian and Oceanian confederations were eligible for 2034, due to FIFA’s continental rotation policy.

After Australia, the only other potential bidder, dropped out on Tuesday, Saudi Arabia was the sole candidate. Its successful bid was confirmed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Instagram.

Human rights

The World Cup is just the latest in a string of Saudi sporting acquisitions under its 38-year-old de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, including Formula One, heavyweight boxing, Newcastle United and LIV Golf.

Saudi clubs backed by the Public Investment Fund sovereign wealth vehicle have signed off hundreds of millions of dollars on star footballers this year, hiring the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema in an unprecedented binge.

However, serious human rights concerns continue to plague Saudi Arabia, including the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, laws against homosexuality, gender inequality, freedom of speech and frequent use of the death penalty.

Awarding the World Cup to Saudi Arabia “despite its appalling human rights record and closed door to any monitoring exposes FIFA’s commitments to human rights as a sham”, said Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch.

However, SAFF said hosting the tournament is an “honour and privilege”, in a statement posted on social media late on Tuesday.

“Driven by a huge passion for the game by our young nation, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation is fully committed to meeting and exceeding the bid’s requirements,” it said.

Going it alone

Misehal also indicated that Saudi Arabia intends to push ahead and host the tournament alone, without asking its neighbours to hold any games.

That would make Saudi the first country to organise the newly expanded, 48-team World Cup on its own, after the joint hostings in 2026 and 2030.

“Saudi Arabia will submit a separate bid,” Misehal said, when asked if another country would hold any matches.

Summers in the desert kingdom can touch 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit), temperatures that would be considered dangerous for football and likely too hot for fans to be outside.

Some cities enjoy temperate weather in the summer, including Abha, Taif and Al-Baha, which hosted the Arab Club Champions Cup in July and August.

However, none of those cities has international-level stadiums, and the bigger Saudi venues are clustered in the major cities of Riyadh and Jeddah.

Despite questions over the bidding process and human rights, residents of the capital Riyadh hailed the news that Saudi Arabia will host the World Cup.

“Saudi Arabia hosting World Cup 2034 is great news and it didn’t come from nowhere,” said 62-year-old Saud al-Oreifi, pointing to the country’s growing portfolio of sports events.

“It came as a result of efforts and successes achieved in the past.”

Kuwaiti visitor Thamer al-Choiebi was similarly enthusiastic, saying: “I am proud in front of the whole world that the kingdom of Saudi Arabia will honour not only the Saudis but the whole Arab region.”

Tension at Laxmi Barrage as Congress workers attempt unauthorized entry

The Congress appeared to be looking to create trouble on purpose because the police had already granted permission to Rahul Gandhi and three other State leaders, including TPCC president A Revanth Reddy, Bhatti Vikramarka, and MLC T Jeevan Reddy

Jayashankar Bhupalpally: Tensions ran high at the Laxmi Barrage, which is part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme at Medigadda here, after Congress workers attempted to breach the area in defiance of Section 144 of the Cr.PC orders on Thursday.

The Congress appeared to be looking to create trouble on purpose because the police had already granted permission to Rahul Gandhi and three other State leaders, including TPCC president A Revanth Reddy, Bhatti Vikramarka, and MLC T Jeevan Reddy though Section 144 was in force in the area.

However, even as their leaders were allowed to visit the site of Pier 20, which had sunk on October 21, several other Congress workers created a ruckus by trying to barge onto the barrage. The police was then forced to use force to disperse the unauthorised visitors from the project area.

During the visit, Rahul Gandhi voiced concerns about the project’s construction quality.

The Laxmi Barrage site has now transformed into a heavily fortified security zone, with local police enforcement working in conjunction with Central paramilitary forces, ensuring stringent oversight at the Ambatpally inter-State check post near the barrage. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Cr.PC remain in effect at the barrage, which has been closed to both traffic and visitors for several days now.

He added the US is a party to the war against Gaza and is not in a position to advise others to exercise restraint.

He emphasized that Palestinian Resistance movements have told him that they do not have a problem in terms of military facilities and the ability to continue a long battle and continue a powerful confrontation with the Zionist regime.

“Islamic countries should take immediate and effective action to end the war crimes of the Zionist regime, lift the blockade of Gaza, and send humanitarian aid, and in this regard, the Islamic Republic of Iran emphasizes the necessity of holding an urgent meeting of heads of Islamic and Arab countries,” the top Iranian diplomat further underscored.

The Turkish President Erdogan, for his part, conveyed his greetings to President Raeisi.

He explained Turkey’s viewpoints regarding the ongoing Palestinian crisis and said, “Turkey’s priority is to stop the attacks on Gaza. , cease-fire and lift the blockade of Gaza and send humanitarian aid, and it is necessary to work to create mechanisms that ensure the security of the Palestinian people.”
