Rupee falls 4 paise to 83.26 against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai: The rupee depreciated 4 paise to 83.26 against the US dollar in the morning session on Friday, tracking a strong American currency overseas and sustained foreign fund outflows.

Forex traders said a positive trend in domestic equities supported the local unit at lower levels and restricted the downside.

At the interbank forex exchange, the rupee opened at 83.22 then touched 83.26 against the American currency, registering a decline of 4 paise over its previous close.

On Thursday, the rupee had settled at 83.22 against the US dollar.

Most traders are betting that the US FED is done with rate hikes and therefore we saw some reprieve in the rising dollar index, said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.

Bhansali further said “the rupee is expected to remain in the same range as RBI continues to sell US dollars and protect the rupee from any depreciation beyond 83.30.” The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.01 per cent lower at 106.11.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.15 per cent to USD 86.98 per barrel.

Iran, Qatar working on temporary Gaza ceasefire initiatives

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said his earlier visit to the Qatari capital of Doha featured a discussion about the truce in the Israeli regime’s war.

The top Iranian diplomat made the remarks upon return to Tehran from a two-way trip that took him to Qatar and Turkey.

“There is talk in Qatar about the idea of truce that could [possibly] lead to extensive transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza,” Amir-Abdollahian said.

The brutal war that the Israeli regime has been waging against the coastal territory has so far claimed the lives of thousands of people.

The regime launched the war after Gaza’s Resistance groups conducted Operation al-Aqsa Storm, their biggest operation against the occupying entity, after years of suffering under Israeli repression of occupation.

“Under the aegis of the truce, we will witness the exchange of civilian prisoners between the two sides, which includes the release of all female Palestinian prisoners,” the Iranian foreign minister said.

The Palestinian Resistance, he added, is after the freedom of Palestinian women, adolescents, and children from Israeli prisoners.

Amir-Abdollahian said during his meeting with the head of Hamas’ Politburo, in Doha, Ismail Haniyeh said the Israeli regime’s attacks on Gaza had so far resulted in the deaths of some 50 prisoners held by the Palestinian Resistance.

Some of these prisoners were being held in the basement of hospitals that were thought to be safe, Amir-Abdollahian noted.

Some of the victims perished during the Israeli regime’s airstrikes against the al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza on October 17 which claimed the lives of at least 500 civilians, he said.

Amir-Abdollahian also said preparations were underway for leaders of the members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to meet in Saudi Arabia “in the near future.”

The top Iranian diplomat added the Israeli regime was “madly” bombing civilians, including women and children, “due to the confusion and shock that they have received” from the Resistance operation.

In Qatar and Turkey, Amir-Abdollahian said, he followed up on President Ebrahim Raeisi’s earlier consultations with the leaders of various Muslim and Arab countries about holding an extraordinary meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed President Raeisi’s proposal for an “immediate” convention of the meeting, the foreign minister said.

Amid the prospect of such a summit or even a meeting of the world’s Arab leaders, the Palestinian Resistance would take “appropriate decisions” in case of continuation of the Israeli regime’s attacks on Gaza, Amir-Abdollahian continued.

The Israeli regime’s efforts to enter Gaza by land over the past three days have also been met with failure, he stated.

In a statement on Monday, the OIC said the Israeli regime’s relentless bombardment of the besieged Gaza Strip constituted war crimes and a flagrant violation of international law, describing the regime’s conduct as “butchering” of thousands of people.

Turkish Parliament Won't Speed Up Sweden's NATO Bid, Says Panel Chair

Turkish Parliament Won't Speed Up Sweden's NATO Bid, Says Panel Chair

Ankara:

The Turkish parliament’s foreign affairs committee will discuss ratifying Sweden’s NATO membership bid as part of its regular agenda as the issue was not so urgent for Ankara as for some other countries, its chair said on Wednesday.

President Tayyip Erdogan submitted the ratification bill for Sweden’s NATO membership bid to parliament last month, a move welcomed by Stockholm as it would clear the way for it to join the Western defence alliance.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said he wants a “speedy vote” by Turkey’s parliament and that the process was “going well”. But parliament’s foreign affairs committee chair Fuat Oktay said Turkey was in no hurry.

“Sweden’s NATO membership is just one of the international agreements on our agenda waiting for ratification,” Oktay told a meeting of lawmakers. “We will discuss it when the time comes … within the framework of our own priorities… What is urgent for others is not necessarily urgent for (us).”

The Sweden NATO membership bill must be approved by the committee before a vote by the full parliament, at which point Erdogan would sign it into law.

Long-neutral Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO last year to bolster their security after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Finland’s membership was sealed in April, but Sweden’s bid had been held up by Turkey and Hungary.

Turkey said Sweden must first take measures against supporters of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and members of a network Ankara holds responsible for a 2016 coup attempt. Turkey treats both groups as terrorist organisations.

Sweden approved a new anti-terrorism law in July.

Sweden’s bid has been stranded in Hungary’s parliament since last year, with the ruling nationalists saying there is no threat to Sweden’s security and citing what they call undue Swedish allegations that they have eroded democracy in Hungary.

Iran lashes out at Israeli regime's displacement of Gazans

Mahdi Aliabadi made the remarks at a meeting of the Permanent Committee of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

“These (the Israeli regime’s) ruthless attacks [on Gaza] will lead to a new displacement crisis. The occupiers have resolved to [forcibly] evacuate Gaza’s population, [something] which serves as another example of crime against humanity by the Zionist regime,” he said.

The remarks came amid a brutal war that the Israeli regime has been waging against the coastal territory since October 7 that has so far claimed the lives of nearly 9,061 people, including 3,700 children and more than 2,300 women.

The regime launched the war after Gaza’s Resistance groups conducted Operation al-Aqsa Storm, their biggest operation against the occupying entity in years, in response to the regime’s decades-long campaign of bloodshed and destruction against Palestinians.

“The [IOM’s] members cannot remain indifferent towards this crisis, and simply bear witness to the formation of a new crisis of displacement and migration,” Aliabadi said.

“It is necessary that the organization adopts a strong and decisive position concerning whatever measure that leads to forcible evacuation of [Gaza’s] population,” he added.

The envoy, accordingly, called on the international community to seriously consider revoking the Israeli regime’s membership of the IOM.

Former US cop pleads guilty to fatally shooting black teen

Washington: A former police officer in the US city of Memphis who was accused of fatally shooting a black teenager earlier this year, has pleaded guilty to two of the four federal charges he was facing.

The 33-year-old Desmond Mills Jr., was one of the five former Memphis police officers accused in the death of Tyre Nichols in January this year, CNN reported.

According to the US Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Tennessee, the former officer on Thursday also agreed to plead guilty in a state court at an upcoming hearing on charges related to Nichols’ death.

Mills pleaded guilty to civil rights and conspiracy charges, which included using excessive force and failing to intervene, as well as conspiring to cover up his use of unlawful force, the Office added.

Prosecutors have said that as part of the agreement, Mills will be called to testify against the other defendants and has also agreed to fully cooperate in the federal civil rights probe into patterns and practices of the Memphis Police Department.

Meanwhile, the four other accused former officers — Tadarrius Bean, Justin Smith, Emmitt Martin III and Demetrius Haley — have all pleaded not guilty.

The hearing came about 10 months after Nichols, a 29-year-old African-American man, was violently beaten by Memphis police officers and died in the hospital from his injuries.

His death led to protests and vigils in Memphis, as well as other major US cities.
