Hangzhou: Aditi Ashok’s fortunes tumbled on the final day as she carded a horrendous five-over 77 to sign off with a silver for India’s first medal in women’s golf at the Asian Games here on Sunday.

Coming into the final day with a commanding seven-stroke lead, Aditi saw the advantage evaporate as she stumbled upon four bogeys and a double bogey against a lone birdie to slip to the second position.

In the forefront for the gold medal after three days, Aditi’s slump also saw the team slip from first to fourth and end without a medal.

India’s other two players, Pranavi Urs (75) and Avani Prashanth (76), also had a rough day in the final round. Pranavi finished 13th and Avani was T-18.

It was a difficult day for scoring, as only six players shot under par and only two went into the 60s.
One of them was the 21-year-old Arpichaya Yubol of Thailand, who like Aditi plays on the LPGA Tour.

Yubol shot 68 in the final round and won the gold ahead of the Indian. The bronze medal was claimed by Korea’s Hyunjo Yoo (65) who had the best round of the final day.

In the men’s section, Anirban Lahiri (65-67-74-68) was T-12, SSP Chawrasia (67-72-68-75) dropped to T-28. Khalin Joshi (70-69-69-73) was T-27 and Shubhankar Sharma (68-69-76-73) was 32nd.

The Indian men ended seventh as Korea took the gold, Thailand were second and Hong Kong third.

In the men’s section, Hong Kong’s Taichi Kho (62-60-70-69) was 27-under as he held on to his third-round lead to win gold. Korea’s PGA Tour winner, Sungjae Im (66-65-66-65) took silver at 26-under.

Taipei’s Chien-Yao Hung (65-63-67-69) at 24-under won bronze.

The 25-year-old Aditi, who had rounds of 67-65-61 on the first three days, crashed from overnight 22-under to 17-under in the final round.

In contrast her playing partner, Arpichaya Yubol of Thailand, compiled a superb 68 in difficult scoring conditions on a day, when just two players carded below 70. Yubol (67-65-69-68), trailing Aditi by seven shots, rose from 15-under to 19-under and beat Aditi by two shots.

Korea’s Hyunjo Yoo (68-73-66-65) at 16-under finished third for the bronze medal as she raced past a bunch of better-known names with six birdies on the back nine in her round of 7-under 65.

Korea won the team gold with a massive margin of 25 shots as they totalled 74-under, with Thailand (51-under) second and Hong Kong (50-under) finished third. The fancied Chinese finished sixth.

Meanwhile in the men’s team, Anirban Lahiri showed recovery after being hit by the heat, as he shot 68 in the final round, but his teammates were way off. Lahiri was the top Indian at T-12, while the team was seventh.

Overall, Korea was the only team to figure among medals in all four sections.

For India, it was fourth individual medal in golf with Lakshman Singh and Shiv Kapur winning the gold in the 1982 and 2002 editions and Rajiv Mohta claiming a silver in New Delhi.

An Indian squad comprising Lakshman, Rajiv, Rishi Narain and Amit Luthra had won the team gold in 1982, while the country also won two team silver medals in 2006 and 2010 editions at Doha and Guangzhou.

Commercial LPG prices increased by Rs 209

Aligarh: In a major setback to LPG consumers, Public sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have hiked the price of 19 KG commercial LPG gas cylinders by Rs 209.

As per the updated price list, it will now cost Rs 1731.50 in Delhi, last month the price was Rs 1522.50. Similarly, commercial LPG price was increased by Rs 1839.50 in Kolkata, Rs 1684.00 in Mumbai and Rs 1898.00 in Chennai.

Anxious shopkeepers are demanding from the government to control inflation. The decision to increase the price of commercial LPG gas cylinder by Rs 209 have left the shopkeepers and restaurateurs running tea, samosa and kachori shops very worried.

According to them inflation is continuously rising and the prices of commercial cylinders have already increased significantly.

A local shopkeeper from Aligarh said, “If there is an increase of Rs 209 now, it will aggravate our problems and we will have to face inflation on food items also. The government should reduce inflation and not increase it.” Monthly revisions for both commercial and domestic LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders occur on the first day of each month.

Earlier, on the eve of Raksha Bandhan, the price of Domestic LPG was reduced by Rs 200 by the central government as a gift to women of the country. In August, the prices of commercial LPG cylinders were slashed by Rs 99.75 by the OMCs.

More than 60,000 protesters gathered in the Swiss capital Bern on Saturday, September 30, demanding tougher policies to combat climate change, organizers said, less than a month ahead of a national election.

Such large protests are rare in Switzerland and show growing public frustration with the pace of policy-making to combat global warming despite ample evidence of its impact.

Switzerland’s glaciers have shrunk by 10% in two years, while September was the hottest on record in a country warming at more than twice the global rate.

Hunger-striking Palestinian prisoner health condition seen worsening

The health of Palestinian prisoner Kayed Fasfous has deteriorated after an almost 2-month open-ended hunger strike to protest Israel’s so-called policy of administrative detention, detaining him without trial.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) announced in a statement that on Friday hunger striking Fasfous was transferred from his prison cell in the Ashkelon detention center to the Ramla Prison’s infirmary after his health worsened.

About 59 days into a hunger strike led Palestinian medical officials to warn about Fasfous’ health condition which has declined sharply and reached a critical point.

Lately, his wife, Hala Nammura, told the Palestinian Information Center that her husband suffers from severe pains all over his body, especially in his joints, a constant headache, failure to move and talk, and other health issues.

Nammura said that her husband was already suffering from joint pains as a result of his previous detention and hunger strikes, but the pains have exacerbated during his current hunger strike.

She affirmed that her husband would continue his hunger strike until his death unless he was released and allowed to return to his family.

According to his family, the Israel Prison Service (IPS) has deprived Fasfous of getting necessary minerals and essential treatment ever since he started his hunger strike nearly two months ago, in an attempt to pressure him to quit the protest action.

Administrative detention is a procedure that enables the Israeli military to hold prisoners indefinitely on so-called secret information without charging them or allowing them to stand trial.

Cancer-stricken Palestinian prisoner develops new tumors

Meanwhile, the PPS stated that recent medical tests show that prisoner Ali al-Haroub, who suffers from cancer, has developed new tumors.

It said in a statement on Saturday that Haroub, who is currently being held in the Negev jail, is one of at least 24 detainees suffering from different types and stages of cancer in Israeli jails.

The PPS accused the Israeli Prison Service of medically neglecting the cancer patients in its jails.

Haroub who has been serving 25 years in jail since 2010, developed cancer over two years ago, but the IPS ignored his need for medical diagnosis, which worsened his condition.

There are reportedly more than 7,000 Palestinians held in Israeli jails. Human rights organizations say Israel violates all the rights and freedoms granted to prisoners by the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Palestinian detainees have continuously resorted to open-ended hunger strikes in an attempt to express outrage at the detentions. Israeli jail authorities keep Palestinian prisoners under deplorable conditions without proper hygienic standards. Palestinian inmates have also been subject to systematic torture, harassment, and repression.

Bayern drops top spot in Bundesliga after Stalemate with Leipzig

Despite Bundesliga leaders taking charge right from the kickoff, they struggled to break through Leipzig’s solid defense, as reported by Xinhua.

Bayern drops top spot in Bundesliga after Stalemate with Leipzig

Berlin: Bayern Munich bounced back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw away to Leipzig thanks to the second-half goals from Harry Kane and Leroy Sane in the Bundesliga sixth round.

The Bundesliga leaders took control of the match from the kick-off but couldn’t do much damage to Leipzig’s well positioned defence, reports Xinhua.

The hosts then shocked Bayern against the flow of the game with 20 minutes gone when Xaver Schlager’s through ball allowed Lois Openda to break the deadlock on Leipzig’s first clear-cut opportunity.

Bayern seemed battered by the surprising opener whereas Leipzig showed a clinical chance conversion and made it 2-0 after Castello Lukeba latched onto a loose ball following a corner in the 26th minute.

The German giants eventually showed signs of life in the closing stages of the first half after Sane pulled a curl shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box.

Thomas Tuchel’s men picked up the pace after the restart, but the uninspired visitors still didn’t pose a lot of threat.

Bayern yet halved the deficit at the hour mark after a converted hand ball penalty allowed Kane to reap his eighth goal in his sixth Bundesliga appearance.

The visitors piled on the pressure and nearly levelled the scores three minutes later, but Raphael Guerreiro’s hammer missed just wide while Leipzig goalkeeper Janis Blaswich was equal to Mathys Tel’s attempt from inside the box moments later.

Bayern efforts paid off though in the 70th minute as Jamal Musiala’s square pass found Sane, who kept his cool and restored parity from very close range.

The German record champions pressed frenetically for the winner, but Leipzig stood firm and secured a share of spoils on home soil.

With the result, leaders Bayern drop to the third spot of the table while Leipzig slip to the fifth position.

Elsewhere, in-form Bayer Leverkusen benefitted on Bayern’s stalemate and jumped atop the standings after beating last-placed Mainz 3-0.

Stuttgart extended their winning run to four games as the second-half brace from Deniz Undav edged winless Cologne 2-0.

Wolfsburg secured their third straight win on home soil after Jonas Wind’s double strike saw off ten-men Eintracht Frankfurt.

Heidenheim upset Union Berlin 1-0 and inflicted the Eisernen their fourth consecutive defeat while Borussia Monchengladbach downed Bochum 3-1.

World Cup 2023: Sri Lanka's Rising Stars Dream Of Emulating Class Of 1996

When Sri Lanka clinched a shock 1996 World Cup triumph, Dunith Wellalage and Matheesha Pathirana were not even born, but the rising stars head to India determined to repeat the victory. Both aged 20, fast bowler Pathirana and all-rounder Wellalage are undeterred by facing childhood heroes at the tournament that opens on October 5. “We are looking forward to bringing the World Cup back to Sri Lanka,” Pathirana told AFP.

“I want to win as many matches for Sri Lanka as I can.”

The island nation is still hurting from the drubbing by India in the Asia Cup final this month in which they were all out for just 50 runs.

But Wellalage is confident that with the preparations they have undergone, Sri Lanka can do well at the World Cup.

“We have players with the experience of playing around the world,” he said. “We plan it match by match… I think we can give a good account of ourselves.”

Wellalage produced his best performance in one-day internationals in the Asia Cup match against India in Colombo on September 12, taking 5 for 40 although India went on to win by 41 runs.

“From my childhood, the player I adored is Virat Kohli,” he said.

“To take his wicket gave me a lot of satisfaction. After I got his wicket, I couldn’t believe that I had done it.”

‘Simple plans’

Wellalage approaches the game seemingly unruffled by the pressure on his young shoulders.

“If you handle the situations correctly, batting becomes easy,” Wellalage said, who captained Sri Lanka in the U19 World Cup last year, scoring a century and claiming 17 wickets.

“When I get out to the middle, I always stick to simple plans,” he said.

“If there is a senior player at the other end, I try to support him,” he added.

“Otherwise, I try and rotate the strike as much as possible, reducing risky shots and try and put the pressure back on the bowling side.”

Both young men credit their family for their swift rise.

Wellalage was handed his first bat aged five by his mother while his father, himself once a talented schoolboy cricketer, acted as bowler.

Pathirana’s car salesman father is a diehard cricket fan, who instilled an early love of the sport.

Nicknamed “Baby Malinga” for his slingy action reminiscent of veteran bowler and compatriot Lasith Malinga, Pathirana said he perfected his unusual swing by playing baseball.

“From my childhood days I never bowled with the usual bowling action”, he said.

Playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings brought Pathirana under the watchful eyes of skipper MS Dhoni.

“I learnt a lot from Dhoni. When I went there, I was a kid and no one knew me, but they trained and taught me several things,” he said.

“Now, I know how to perform in any T20 game, and how to balance my four overs in a match. Dhoni told me; if I keep my body away from injury, I can achieve a lot for the team and the country.”

‘Strength to strength’

Still, Pathirana acknowledges he is yet to master his unique arm action and bowls more wides than he wants.

“The coaches don’t put pressure on me, they say that with my action, I will improve with age,” he said.

After playing for the Under-19s at the 2020 and 2022 World Cups, Pathirana was fast tracked by Sri Lanka Cricket.

“I got a break to play in the Abu Dhabi T10, after that I played in the IPL, and with the IPL experience I graduated into the Sri Lanka team,” he said.

Head coach Chris Silverwood called Pathirana a hard worker with a “big future”.

Others have high praise for Wellalage too.

“He is a real star in the making who can do special things”, said former India cricketer-turned-commentator Dinesh Karthik.

KTR releases documentary on Telangana martyrs

Hyderabad: IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao on Sunday released ‘Amara Jyothi’, a documentary on the sacrifices of Telangana martyrs. The 10-minute video has a splendid portrayal of the greatness of the martyrs who shed their lives during the fight for a separate Telangana from 1969 to the day Statehood was realised.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said the documentary would give a heart-warming account of the martyrdom of the youth for the cause of Statehood, a fallout of the conspiracies of those who opposed Statehood for Telangana.

Ts

Many student heroes were among those who sacrificed their lives to inspire the people to fight for Statehood. It is a must watch for everyone from Telangana, he said, congratulating the writer and MLC Deshapati Srinivas and director, Badawat Purnachander.

More such documentaries would be welcome, he said.

The Minister also released a book titled ‘Nadaka’, a collection of essays authored by Errozu Srinivas and another book ‘Kasuvu’ written by Dr. Gade Venkatesh on environmental sanitation issues.

He appreciated Telangana Vikasa Samithi General Secretary Errozu Srinivas for his analysis of Telangana progress through the book.

Kasuvu had a mention of very rare aspects, he said, adding that there were no books that had comprehensively discussed the history of sanitation in Telangana and the progress made in the department of Municipal Administration. ‘Kasuvu’ had filled that gap.

Sahitya Akademi Chairman Juluru Gowrishankar, Telangana Digital Media Director Konatham Dileep and others were present.

Glasgow Gurdwara strongly condemns incident involving Indian High Commissioner

London: The Glasgow Guru Granth Sahib Gurdwara has ‘strongly condemned’ the incident where Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, was stopped this week from attending a programme by pro-Khalistan extremists.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Gurdwara said that it “strongly condemns such disorderly behaviour to disrupt the peaceful proceedings of a Sikh place of worship”.

“The Gurdwara is open to people from all communities and backgrounds, and we welcome everyone openly as per our principles of faith,” it said.

In a viral video of the incident, which occurred at Albert Drive on Friday, a few pro-Khalistan activists approached Doraiswami’s car and asked him to leave.

The two-day personal visit facilitated by a member of Scottish Parliament, reportedly involved a series of meetings and discussions with local political leaders, diaspora representatives, business chiefs and university groups.

“Certain unknown individuals from outside the Glasgow area attempted to disrupt this visit, following which the visiting party decided to leave the premises. After the departure of the visitors, these unruly individuals continued to disturb the Gurdwara congregation,” the statement read.

It added that the police in Scotland were in attendance after the incident, and have taken cognizance of the matter.

The Indian High Commission on Saturday said that it has reported this “disgraceful incident” to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Metropolitan Police.

The incident comes in the wake of a diplomatic row between India and Canada over the killing of Canada-based pro-Khalistan hardliner Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
