Brazil President Stable After Surgery, Starts Walking In Physio Sessions

Lula Da Silva is expected to remain in the hospital until Tuesday (File)

Brasilia, Brazil:

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is clinically stable one day after hip surgery and has begun to walk in physiotherapy sessions, the Sirio-Libanes Hospital in Brazil’s capital said on Saturday.

Lula underwent surgery on Friday for arthrosis of the right hip caused by the extremely painful wear and tear of the cartilage on the head of the femur.

His doctors expect him to remain in the hospital until Tuesday when he will move to the presidential residence from where he will govern for three weeks as he recovers.

The arthroplasty procedure, under general anaesthetic, involved removing the head of the femur to implant a prosthesis.

The orthopaedic surgeon who did the surgery, Giancarlo Polesello, said Lula would have to avoid standing for too long and would need to use a walker in the first weeks, as the procedure affects the patients’ balance.

Lula has said he has been in constant pain for more than a year, though this has not stopped him from travelling to dozens of countries since he took office in January.

Lula will only resume presidential trips abroad at the end of November when he plans to travel to the United Arab Emirates to attend the COP28 global climate meeting.

Arvind Kejriwal Meets Students Who Cleared National Defence Academy Exam

Arvind Kejriwal said it was not expected that such excellent results would be achieved

New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday met the students of the Armed Forces Preparatory School who cleared the National Defence Academy exams this year.

After 32 students from the batch of 76 from the Delhi government’s school cleared the NDA written exam, Arvind Kejriwal called it a miracle and said that it was not expected that such excellent results would be achieved in the very first year of the school’s inception.

Taking to X (former Twitter), Arvind Kejriwal said, “A year ago, we started Armed Forces Preparatory School to prepare the children of Delhi for the army. Although we had provided the best facilities in the school, it was not expected that such excellent results would be achieved in the very first year. 76 children of the first batch appeared for the written examination of NDA – 32 passed.”

“Looks like a miracle today I had invited these children to my house for tea. My eyes became moist with joy after meeting them. Our children are becoming good, responsible, and patriotic citizens. What confidence do the children have, the passion to do something for the country,” he further added.

32 students including 9 girls from Delhi Government’s Shaheed Bhagat Singh Armed Forces Preparatory School (AFPS) have cleared the National Defence Academy (NDA) written exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission.

Appreciating the efforts of students, Education Minister Atishi said, “The vision of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal behind starting AFPS seems to be getting fulfilled within a year. He started the school to provide opportunities to children from underprivileged backgrounds to become military officers and serve the nation. It’s a tremendous achievement that out of our 76 students who took the exam, of which 32 students cleared the written exam.”

Communal Tension In Jaipur As Mob Kills Man Due To Misunderstanding: Police

Strict action will be taken against the accused, the police said (Representational)

Jaipur:

Communal tension erupted in Jaipur’s Ramganj and its surrounding areas after a man died after he was allegedly beaten by a mob following an accident involving two motorcycles, the police said on Saturday.

Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph said that the incident was the result of a misunderstanding.

Two motorcycles collided in Subhash Chowk after which a group of men present there thrashed two bystanders, mistaking them for being responsible for the accident, he said

“After the accident, an unfortunate incident of road rage occurred in which two men, who stopped to see what had happened, were thrashed by a group of people,” Mr Joseph told reporters.

“One of the two died. An FIR has been registered after which we have detained several people involved. The situation is normal now and complete peace will be restored soon,” he added.

Another police official said the accused live in the Subhash Chowk area while the victim was from the city’s Ramganj area. Both the localities are in the walled city of Jaipur.

Nearly a dozen suspects have been detained in connection with the incident that took place late Friday night. The situation was under control after additional forces were deployed, they said.

The situation is under control and forces, including the Special Task Force (STF), have been deployed in adequate numbers, Director General of Police Umesh Mishra said, adding that drones are being used to monitor the area.

“Strict action as per the law will be taken against the accused,” he said.

Several shops in the Muslim-dominated areas remained shut and the family of the victim and locals gathered to demand action against the accused people.

The situation, however, did not worsen after the quick rounding up of the accused and deployment of the forces in the area, the police said.

PM Modi congratulates Indian men’s squash team for winning gold at Asian Games

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated the Indian men’s squash team on its spectacular gold medal victory at the 19th Asian Games.

With their fierce performance, the men’s squash team of Mahesh Mangaonkar, Saurav Ghosal, Harinder Sandhu and Abhay Singh clinched a gold medal after defeating Pakistan 2-1 in a high-intensity final.

With a sheer display of grit and resilience, India dug deep to wrap up the tie and clinch the gold medal, defeating Pakistan 2-1 in the best-of-three final contest.

“Congratulations to our Squash Men’s Team of the talented @SauravGhosal @abhaysinghk98 @sandhu_harinder and @maheshmangao on a spectacular victory at the Asian Games and bringing home the coveted Gold Medal. This effort will inspire so many young athletes to pursue sports and excel in it. India is delighted!” PM Narendra Modi tweeted on ‘X’, formerly known as Twitter.

In the first match of the tie between arch-rivals, it was Pakistan’s Iqbal who started the game fiercely as he gave Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the tie.

In the second match, veteran Saurav Ghosal turned the tie in India’s favour as he won 11-5, 11-1, 11-3 against Muhammad Asim Khan.

Abhay Singh took a 4-point lead early in the decider match against Pakistan’s Noor Zaman. Abhay walked away with the first game of the all-important final match.

Abhay brought out his acrobatics, diving to reach a couple of shots. Noor Zaman showed off his understanding of the angles, making the most of side walls. Some more amazing athleticism from Abhay was not enough as Zaman levelled the final match at 1 game apiece.

In the fourth game of the match, an unforced error from Zaman brought Abhay right back into it. The 25-year-old gave India the game and took the decider into a decider.

In the decider game, Abhay showed off his understanding of the court and the angles involved to pick up a couple of quick points and go into the lead. The decider saw some fantastic shots, but in the end, it was a massive unforced error from Zaman, who hit the tin again, that gave Abhay the point.

Zaman had two gold medal points but Abhay Singh dug and he dug deep to get four points on the trot again and gave India a gold medal in the final.

It was India’s second-ever gold medal in squash at the Asian Games.

Massive rallies against Israeli regime's policies drag into 39th straight week

Tens of thousands have held massive protests across the occupied territories for the 39th straight week against the hard-line Israeli cabinet’s policies, including its so-called judicial overhaul scheme.

The rallies were held on Saturday across more than 100 locations throughout the occupied territories, including the coastal city of Tel Aviv, as well as the occupied city of al-Quds, Modi’in, Ariel, Rosh Ha’ayin, Haifa and Rehovot.

“On Saturday night, we will all meet at Kaplan [Street in Tel Aviv] — bolstering our ranks, with straight backs…in a massive solidarity rally,” protest organizers said in a statement ahead of the rally in the city, which ended up drawing the largest crowd as was the case with the previous protests.

Noting that Israel’s extremist prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, “is an expert in dividing people along sectarian lines, religious vs. secular, [and] left vs. right as part of his divide and conquer strategy,” the statement added, “The economy is tumbling down and all we get is provocations…”

Dozens of demonstrators closed the Ayalon Expressway in Tel Aviv, raising protest banners and carrying torches. The regime’s forces then moved in to disperse the crowd, arresting two demonstrators.

Former director general of Israel’s ministry of military affairs, Dan Harel, addressed the Tel Aviv rally, saying that the extremist cabinet’s “actions to weaken the Supreme Court have already resulted in significant damage to the reserve units” of the regime’s military, “causing a loss of readiness and operational capability.”

Hundreds of protesters also held a rally in front of the Israeli president’s residence in the city of al-Quds.

The demonstrations started in January, when Netanyahu’s far-right cabinet unveiled its plan to radically change the structure of the regime’s judiciary and its Supreme Court.

The scheme primarily seeks to prevent the Supreme Court from being able to exercise its power to strike down the decisions made by the politicians.

The protests have gained momentum since the end of July, when the Knesset passed the first bill of the overhaul plan, which restricted the court’s ability to declare the cabinet’s decisions “unreasonable.”

Saturday’s rallies came after the court deliberated petitions against the “reasonableness law.” A verdict, however, is due in weeks, if not months.

Proponents of the overhaul say it helps redistribute the balance of power between the politicians and the judiciary. Its opponents, however, accuse Netanyahu of trying his hand at a power grab. They say the premier, who is on trial in three corruption cases for receiving bribe, fraud, and breach of trust, is also attempting to use the scheme to quash possible judgments against him.

Apple says it will fix software problems blamed for making iPhone 15 models too hot to handle

The Wall Street Journal amplified the worries in a story citing the overheating problem in its own testing of the new iPhones, which went on sale a week ago.

Apple says it will fix software problems blamed for making iPhone 15 models too hot to handle

San Francisco: Apple is blaming a software bug and other issues tied to popular apps such as Instagram and Uber for causing its recently released iPhone 15 models to heat up and spark complaints about becoming too hot to handle.

The Cupertino, California, company said Saturday that it is working on an update to the iOS17 system that powers the iPhone 15 lineup to prevent the devices from becoming uncomfortably hot and is working with apps that are running in ways “causing them to overload the system.” Instagram, owned by Meta Platforms, modified its social media app earlier this week to prevent it from heating up the device on the latest iPhone operating system.

Uber and other apps such as the video game Asphalt 9 are still in the process of rolling out their updates, Apple said. It didn’t specify a timeline for when its own software fix would be issued but said no safety issues should prevent iPhone 15 owners from using their devices while awaiting the update.

“We have identified a few conditions which can cause iPhone to run warmer than expected,” Apple in a short statement provided to The Associated Press after media reports detailed overheating complaints that are peppering online message boards.

The Wall Street Journal amplified the worries in a story citing the overheating problem in its own testing of the new iPhones, which went on sale a week ago.

It’s not unusual for new iPhones to get uncomfortably warm during the first few days of use or when they are being restored with backup information stored in the cloud — issues that Apple already flags for users. The devices also can get hot when using apps such as video games and augmented reality technology that require a lot of processing power, but the heating issues with the iPhone 15 models have gone beyond those typical situations.

In its acknowledgement, Apple stressed that the trouble isn’t related to the sleek titanium casing that houses the high-end iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max instead of the stainless steel used on older smartphones.

Apple also dismissed speculation that the overheating problem in the new models might be tied to a shift from its proprietary Lightning charging cable to the more widely used USB-C port that allowed it to comply with a mandate issued by European regulators.

Although Apple expressed confidence that the overheating issue can be quickly fixed with the upcoming software updates, the problem still could dampen sales of its marquee product at time when the company has faced three consecutive quarters of year-over-year declines in overall sales.

The downturn has affected iPhone sales, which fell by a combined 4 per cent in the nine months covered by Apple’s past three fiscal quarters compared with a year earlier.

Apple is trying to pump up its sales in part by raising the starting price for its top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro Max to USD 1,200, an increase of USD 100, or 9 per cent, from last year’s comparable model.

Investor worries about Apple’s uncharacteristic sales funk already have wiped out more than USD 300 billion in shareholder wealth since the company’s market value closed at USD 3 trillion for the first time in late June.
