Watch: Avinash Sable Shatters Asian Games Record To Win Historic Gold

A record-breaking Avinash Sable on Sunday became the first Indian man to win a gold medal in 3000m steeplechase at the Asian Games. The 29-year-old national record holder thus earned India its first gold medal in athletics at the ongoing Games, completing the race in 8:19.50 seconds. Sable rewrote the previous Asian Games record of 8:22.79 held in the name of Iran’s Hossein Keyhani set at the 2018 Jakarta Games. Sudha Singh had won a gold in women’s 3000m steeplechase in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou. Earlier, the toast of the nation in the last edition, Indian heptathlete Swapna Barman’s one “last shot” at glory at the Asian Games turned into a nightmare as she struggled with injuries to virtually go out of medal reckoning after the javelin throw event.

The defending champion, who boasts of a personal best of 52.55m in javelin throw, managed a throw of just 45.13 in the penultimate event of the gruelling two-day competition.

Javelin throw was one of the two events Swapna had won in 2018 en route to becoming the first Indian heptathlete to win an Asian Games gold.

Overall, Swapna was ranked fourth with 4840 points, 11 points behind her nearest rival Jingyi Liu of China ahead of the 800m race, which is the last segment of the seven-event competition.

The other Indian in the fray, Nandini Agasara notched a personal best of 39.88m in javelin throw that took her overall ranking to fifth place.

Earlier in the day, Swapna Barman leapt 5.71m in the long jump, while Nandini Agasara had a season-best 5.94m jump.

With her career ravaged by a spinal injury, the six-toed Indian athlete had contemplated retirement last year. But she took one last shot at glory and came to Hanghzou in her title defence bid.

This year she won the Inter-State meet and also bagged a silver medal in the build-up to the Asian Games. She also avoided surgery so as to ensure that she does not miss her training despite a bad back.

“But her body condition could not cope up and she failed to get a good start,” her coach Subhash Sarkar told PTI.

“She was expecting a good result in high jump but a fourth place finish shattered her and she couldn’t recover from there,” he added.

Swapna had a jump of 1.70m, which was nowhere close to her personal best of 1.87.

“The poor start has affected her morale and it showed in today’s javelin throw event. It’s as good as over,” Sarkar said of Swapna’s prospects this time.

Earlier, India’s Amlan Borgohain finished at the third position after clocking 21.08 seconds in the men’s 200m heats and advanced to the semifinal.

The first three athletes in each heat make the cut for the semi-finals. The top four times from all the heats who have not made the cut will also advance to the semifinals.

The sprinter from Assam, currently the country’s fastest, holds both the men’s 100m and 200m national records.

However, Jyothi Yarraji failed to make the cut for the women’s 200m final. The Indian had a timing of 23.78s.

Yarraji, however, is in contention for a medal in women’s 100m hurdles.

Ashwin ‘alike’ bowler Mahesh Pithania denies Australia’s request to join them in nets

New Delhi: After India included stalwart spinner R Ashwin in the squad of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Australian team management called Gujarat local bowler Mahesh Pithania to their practice session who has a similar bowling style as of Ashwin.

However, the bowler has denied the request as he has others committing.

Earlier, the Australian team had taken the help of Pithania in the nets during their visit to India early this year for the test series. This time also Aussies wanted to prepare themselves against Ashwin in the practice session by playing Pithania in Chennai where India and Australia will start their world campaign.

Pithania told ANI that this time declined the offer as he will be playing in domestic cricket.

“I got the call from Pritesh Joshi a sidearm specialist, he is with the Australian squad this time and helping them on nets, by the time R Ashwin Joined the squad he called me and said to pack my bags and joined the Australia team at Chennai as they wants you in nets but I declined the offer this time as home season of cricket coming ahead and I have to play and this time I am busy in practice and other training so I said no to them this time”, Pithania added.

India have brought in veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in place of injured all-rounder Axar Patel after his phenomenal performance against Australia in the recent ODI series.

Ashwin impressed in the recently concluded ODI series against Australia, where he took three wickets in the second ODI at Indore.

'X' Is Losing Its Daily Active Users, CEO Linda Yaccarino Confirms

'X' Is Losing Its Daily Active Users, CEO Linda Yaccarino Confirms

Linda Yaccarino shared previously unknown stats of the company.

CEO for X, Linda Yaccarino appeared onstage for an interview with CNBC’s Julia Boorstin at Vox Media’s Code 2023 event recently. During the 45-minute-long interview, she shared previously unknown stats of the company.

Throughout the interview, she repeated that she’s only been on the job at X for 12 weeks. She revealed that X, formerly Twitter is losing daily active users after Elon Musk took over.

At the tech conference, Ms. Yaccarino shared that the company currently has 225 million daily active users – a decline in tens of millions or 11.6 per cent of users from just before Mr. Musk acquired the company.

Last year, Elon Musk posted a series of tweets which showed that Twitter had 254.5 million daily active users the week before his takeover.

See the tweet here:

According to The Information, X revised its daily active user count to 245 million daily active users. She said that X had 225 million active users, Ms Yaccarinno previously cited “200 to 250 million” daily active users earlier in the interview.

As per Mashable report, according to stats shared by her, X is losing millions or around 3.7 per cent of daily active users from before Mr Musk’s acquisition.

The report claims that the daily active users are even down from the numbers that Musk shared last year when he was in charge. Twitter had 259.4 million daily active users in mid-November 2022. X has lost nearly 15 million users – a drop of roughly 5.6 per cent.

When Ms. Yaccarino was asked about user metrics, she tried to move away from the topic and said X had 200 and 250 daily active users. She also said the platform had 50,000 communities and engagement numbers were up since June.

She then said that X had 550 million monthly active users. It’s unclear how much monthly active user growth has happened under Mr Musk’s leadership.

She also said that X will be profitable in 2024. “Now that I have immersed myself in the business, and we have a good set of eyes on what is predictable, what’s coming is that it looks like in early ’24, we will be turning a profit,” she said onstage at the Code Conference.

She also claimed, “90% of the top 100 advertisers have returned to the platform in the last 12 weeks alone.”

US to make insecurity in Central Asia by bolstering ISIL

“Although more than two years have passed since the Americans fled Afghanistan, this country continues its acts of mischief in Afghanistan,” the senior Iranian diplomat said, adding that the US seeks to cause concern for the countries of the region, including Afghanistan’s neighbors.

The economic and security challenges in Afghanistan are more than anything caused by the 20-year occupation of the United States, NATO, and their allies in that country, he added.

Referring to the continuation of US support to the terrorism and ISIL terrorist group, Kazemi Qomi said that by strengthening ISIL-Khorasan, Washington plans to make Central Asian countries insecure first and then establish bases in these countries under the pretext of fighting ISIL.

He went on to say that the countries participating in the Friday Moscow Format meeting in the Russian city of Kazan argued that forming a government that is trusted by the Afghan people is a precondition for improving the situation in Afghanistan.

Referring to the need for the support of the United Nations and the international community for regional initiatives, he noted that one of the most important decisions of the countries participating in the Format was the formation of a contact group by neighbors and regional countries.

Saying that the Westerners back forming an international contact group, Kazemi Qomi stressed that the international contact group means the presence of America and NATO again, and such a group, which is the main cause of the chaotic situation in Afghanistan, not only will not improve the situation in Afghanistan but will add to the problems.

At the summit, the Taliban delegation was informed that if they wanted the support of the countries of the region, they need to form a government that is supported and trusted by the people of that country, he added.

Former cricketer Atul Wassan brands Rohit, Virat’s experience as India’s X-factor for World Cup

Former cricketer Atul Wassan brands Rohit, Virat’s experience as India’s X-factor for World Cup

Mumbai: Former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan feels the experience of stalwart batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be the X-factor for the ‘Men in Blue’ in the upcoming ODI World Cup.

Kohli and Rohit, India’s two most experienced players have tapped into their best selves in time after producing some eye-catching performances in India’s recently concluded series.

Atul talked about the iconic duo who could be India’s trump cards for the mega tournament and apart from them, he also named Chinaman spinner, Kuldeep Yadav who could also turn out to be a vital player during India’s campaign.

“It is not like we played in Sri Lanka and we became hot favourites. Anything can happen at any time. By default, Ashwin has come into the squad and the team looks balanced.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s experience is our x-factor because, in a long match, you need one player who can soak the pressure. We also have Kuldeep so I think these two-three trump cards help us to become favourites. India will definitely be there in the top four along with England and Australia. For the fourth spot I want Pakistan to be there, their spin department is very weak,” Atul said while speaking to ANI.

After India’s triumph in the Asia Cup 2023, Rohit and Virat were rested for the first two ODI games of the three-match series against Australia.

They marked their comeback with a bang as he took on the bowlers, and dealt effectively with the left-arm pacers to pull off a magnificent knock of 81.

Rohit’s heroics with the bat weren’t enough to take the hosts across the finishing line as India bundled out on 286 while chasing a target of 353.

Kohli also made his presence felt with his trademark shots and struck a 56 before falling to Glenn Maxwell’s unpredictable off-break.

India’s first warm-up game against England in Guwahati was washed out due to rain. They will have one more opportunity to test their playing XI against the Netherlands on Tuesday before they open their campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai.
