Former PM Robert Fico Opposed To Ukraine Aid Wins Slovak Elections

People in Slovakia have bigger problems than (dealing with) Ukraine, Robert Fico said (File)

Bratislava:

A Slovak populist party that wants to stop military aid to Ukraine and is critical of the EU and NATO will be tasked with forming a new government after winning elections.

The Smer-SD party led by former prime minister Robert Fico scored 23 percent in Saturday’s vote, beating the centrist Progressive Slovakia at 18 percent.

“Slovakia and the people in Slovakia have bigger problems than (dealing with) Ukraine,” Fico told reporters on Sunday.

He added Ukraine was “a huge tragedy for all” and called for peace talks as “further killing will not help anyone”.

During the campaign, the 59-year-old vowed that Slovakia would not send “a single round of ammunition” to Ukraine and called for better ties with Russia.

President Zuzana Caputova, a former member of Progressive Slovakia and a longtime political rival of Fico, said she would task him with forming a new government.

“In the spirit of our constitutional tradition, tomorrow I will entrust the formation of the government to the winner of the election,” she said in a statement.

Analysts have said a Fico government could radically change Slovakia’s foreign policy to resemble that of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

But Fico, a leftist former lawyer, said Sunday that Slovakia’s foreign policy focus would not change as “we are naturally EU members”.

“That of course doesn’t mean I can’t criticise things in the EU that I don’t like.”

Hungary is seen as a troublemaker in the EU, frequently criticised by Brussels for rule-of-law issues and hampering EU and NATO efforts to help Ukraine.

“In Robert Fico, Orban will get a new ally,” analyst Tomas Koziak from the Czech University of Political Sciences told AFP.

Orban himself congratulated Fico on X, formerly Twitter, “on his undisputable victory at the Slovak parliamentary elections”.

“Always good to work together with a patriot. Looking forward to it!” Orban wrote.

‘People are fed up’

Many ordinary Slovaks are less concerned about foreign policy and hope the new government will focus on the economy and squabble less than the last one.

Selling bread rolls in a Bratislava bakery, Jana Urbanova told AFP she expected the government to tackle “unbearable” inflation.

“Fico is experienced, he is a professional, isn’t he? I did not vote for him but I don’t think it matters that he won,” she said.

Tomas Hrivnak, 23, said he had voted for Progressive Slovakia and was “disappointed” but added that the result was “not the end of the world”.

“I think people are fed up with the former government of centrist and right-wing politicians, their quarrels and inability to run this country properly,” he said.

But another Progressive Slovakia voter, Eva Lichnerova, voiced concern.

“The biggest threat that I see is the diversion from the European Union, the shift towards Russia, the suppression of journalists’ rights and freedoms,” she said.

Ukraine aid

Smer has won 42 seats in the 150-member parliament and needs coalition partners for a majority.

Hlas-SD, which emerged in 2020 as a breakaway party from Smer, is a potential partner with 27 seats.

Its chairman Peter Pellegrini became premier in 2018 after Fico’s resignation amid nationwide protests following the murder of journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee, Martina Kusnirova.

Kuciak uncovered links between the Italian mafia and Fico’s government in his last article, published posthumously.

The two parties could team up with the nationalist Slovak National Party (SNS), which won 10 seats, for a parliamentary majority of 79 seats.

Fico has already ruled twice with the SNS, which is also opposed to military aid for Ukraine.

Slovakia is one of Europe’s biggest donors to Ukraine, relative to the size of its economy.

Surge in disinformation

Slovakia’s next parliament will also include the centrist OLaNO party of maverick former premier Igor Matovic, who got involved in a fistfight with a Smer member during the heated campaign.

The centrist Christian Democrats and the right-wing SaS also garnered enough votes to have seats in parliament.

The election campaign was tarnished by particularly high rates of online disinformation, often targeting Progressive Slovakia chairman Michal Simecka, a European Parliament vice-speaker.

Slovakia emerged as an independent country in 1993, following a peaceful split with the Czech Republic after Czechoslovakia shed four decades of totalitarian communist rule in 1989.

Although many Slovaks have experience with the Moscow-steered communist regime, analysts say many are vulnerable to pro-Kremlin disinformation.

Fico’s election campaign also featured rhetoric against the LGBTQ+ community and migrants, causing concern among non-governmental organisations.

Sudarshan’s 72 off 165 balls was the cornerstone of RoI’s innings, as left-arm spinner Parth Bhut took four wickets (4/85)

Rajkot: B. Sai Sudarshan’s patient half-century helped Rest of India score 298 for 8 despite other batsmen struggling against Saurashtra spinners on a gripping surface on the opening day of their Irani Trophy match here on Sunday.

Sudarshan’s 72 off 165 balls was the cornerstone of RoI’s innings, as left-arm spinner Parth Bhut took four wickets (4/85) to inflict serious damage on their top and middle-order.

Two future India contenders Sarfaraz Khan (17) and Yash Dhull (10) failed once again in an important fixture, which also underlined their indifferent form in the past few months.

In fact, Dhull’s selection in Rest of India after not even scoring 300 runs have come under scanner.

Once he called correct at toss, Hanuma Vihari did not have to think twice to opt to bat, as the RoI captain could not have fancied his side batting fourth on this surface at the SCA Stadium.

His decision seemed working as openers Sudarshan and Mayank Agarwal milked 69 runs off 112 balls.

The pitch seemed a trustworthy ally in the first session too, but the first hint of turn and grip came when left-arm spinner Dharemendrasinh Jadeja made Agarwal edge one to Preark Mankad at first slip.

Sudarshan and Vihari joined forces and added a further 69 runs for the second wicket but the persistence of Bhut yielded results soon.

Vihari’s soft prod off the left-arm spinner ended in the hands of Samarth Vyas at silly point.

But Sudarshan, who recently won the English county championship with Surrey, soldiered on and looked in comfort while playing a few sweeps and drives.

His experience of playing on such pitches in league matches in Tamil Nadu came to the fore too in this innings.

But Sudarshan could not kick on as he returned to the pavilion, perishing to the Bhut-Mankad combination.

The dismissal of Sudarshan pushed the Rest of India into a mini slump as they lost three wickets for just 22 runs.

But a couple of 30s from the late order batters carried Rest of India close to the 300-run mark, and the total could prove vital on a track that is increasingly slowing down.

"Gave My Shirt": Man Who Was Jailed For Not Helping Ujjain Rape Survivor

'Gave Her My Shirt': Auto Driver Who Was Jailed For Not Helping Ujjain Rape Survivor

The Ujjain rape survivor got no help from anyone, till a temple priest rescued her

Bhopal:

An autorickshaw driver who was detained by the police after blood stains were found in his vehicle in the horrific Ujjain rape case has said he helped the 15-year-old girl by giving her clothes.

The autorickshaw driver Rakesh Malviya told the police his only mistake was he did not take the girl to hospital, but left her on the road.

The police yesterday told NDTV those who did not help the girl – who had been raped and left half-naked and bleeding, and went door-to-door begging for help – may be charged under child sex abuse laws. They may face action under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act for not reporting the crime.

Mr Malviya spent four night in police custody after he was detained over suspicion that he could be the suspect. The police have now said he should have reported the matter immediately or taken the girl to hospital.

The autorickshaw driver said he gave the girl a khaki shirt that drivers wear. He said he regrets not having taken her to hospital.

“I gave a khaki shirt to her. She said she wanted to go home. I regret it a lot. I was also confused. I found myself in this situation for the first time, didn’t know who to tell,” Mr Malviya said.

The indifference of some residents of Ujjain whose doors the girl knocked for help has been criticised widely. For two hours, no one in the places she passed by – over 500 houses, dhabas and a toll booth – did not help her, until a temple priest helped her and called the police.

A man standing outside a house was seen on CCTV in what appeared like he was talking rudely to the girl using aggressive gestures. The man’s brother, however, said it was all a misunderstanding.

“My brother had just woken up and was groggy. As soon as he opened the gate, he saw the girl suddenly coming towards the gate. He then went in to call our sister-in-law. By then the girl left and we could not help her. We feel very sorry. The girl should get justice,” said Tarun Das Swami, the brother of the man seen on CCTV.

Another Ujjain resident, who does not live in the part of the city where the girl got no help, criticised the resident for not helping her. “People have ignored the girl. Our Ujjain has become infamous. It is the city of Mahakal. If this has happened here, then what can we say?” Ujjain resident Renu Bansal said.

The main accused, Bharat Soni, is in jail, while the girl is recovering in hospital.

The Madhya Pradesh police had said it took an extraordinary effort to crack the case, which involved interrogating hundreds of people, and scanning footage from over 700 CCTV cameras before they found links to the main accused.

Power cuts, scams to return with Congress, warns KTR

Power cuts, scams to return with Congress, warns KTR

Mancherial: Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao said frequent power cuts, abrupt changing of Chief Ministers and multiple scams would return to Telangana if the Congress was voted to power.

Addressing a gathering after inaugurating various developmental projects in Kyathanpalli municipality on Sunday, the Minister referred to the six guarantees promised by the Congress and said three threats such as interruption in supply of power, changing of Chief Ministers at regular intervals and scams would certainly be the norm if the Congress assumed power. He asked the public to rethink the guarantees and not to fall prey to such false promises.

The Congress was requesting the public to provide an opportunity to govern the State, but the people had given the mandate to the Congress 11 times, still it could not do anything in 60 years. Bhongir MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy should visit Chennur Assembly segment to check the uninterrupted supply of power, he said.

Rama Rao also lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for privatising coal blocks owned by the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). He faulted Modi for not waiving Income Tax to coal miners as extended to the Indian Army. He wanted the public to make K Chandrashekhar Rao as Chief Minister of Telangana for a record third time in a row.

Commenting on the de-notification of Mandamarri from Agency area, the minister opined that Modi was a stubborn Prime Minister who was least concerned about development, and was bothered only about the growth of certain corporate forces. He asked the public to decide whether they wanted development or destruction.

Appreciating government whip Balka Suman for developing Chennur Assembly constituency on many fronts, he said Chennur was competing with Gajwel, Siddipet and Sircilla segments. Locals, youngsters, farmers would be benefited with the advent of an oil palm factory to be created in Mandamarri costing Rs 500 crore, he added.

SM Krishna advises four riparian states to formulate distress formula to end Cauvery issue

SM Krishna advises four riparian states to formulate distress formula to end Cauvery issue

The former External Affairs Minister was also appreciative of the state government’s stand on the issue.

Bengaluru: Former Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna on Sunday said all the four riparian states should discuss and formulate a distress formula aimed at putting an end to the Cauvery river water sharing dispute.

The former External Affairs Minister was also appreciative of the state government’s stand on the issue.

“If we have to put an end to this dispute, it is appropriate for all the four states (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Puducherry) to discuss and formulate the distress formula, and within its framework appropriate decisions have to be made regarding the management of the river water,” Krishna said.

Speaking to reporters here, the veteran leader said when there is deficit rainfall, the Cauvery issue makes noise, as there is demand for water, and Tamil Nadu’s statements in this regard mostly seem to be “withering” the facts.

Expressing his support to the stand taken by the Karnataka government on the Cauvery issue, Krishna recalled that even during his tenure as CM, a similar tense situation had emerged and the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had tried for negotiation by holding several meetings with the chief ministers of both

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, but they were not successful, and ultimately the matter had to reach the Supreme Court.

He also lauded the state government for taking the advice of former Chief Justice of India M N Venkatachalaiah and other senior judges regarding its next course of action, and said, “I advise them to continue in the same way.” Krishna, who was earlier with Congress and later joined the BJP, had in January announced his retirement from active politics.

To a question about his take on the BJP-JD(S) alliance, Krishna said, “I’m not in politics, so my stand on the issue is irrelevant.”

Imran Khan, his aide Qureshi named ‘principal accused’ in cipher case

FIA filed a charge sheet in the Special Court established under the Official Secrets Act, declaring Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Khan and Vice Chairman Qureshi “principal accused” in the case

Imran Khan, his aide Qureshi named ‘principal accused’ in cipher case

Islamabad: Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan and his close aide Shah Mahmood Qureshi have been named “principal accused” in a case related to the alleged disclosure of state secrets, a media report said on Sunday.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Saturday filed a charge sheet in the Special Court established under the Official Secrets Act, declaring Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Khan and Vice Chairman Qureshi “principal accused” in the case, Dawn newspaper reported.

Both Khan and Qureshi are currently detained in jail on judicial remand.

Khan, 70, was arrested in August after the case was filed against him for allegedly violating the Official Secrets Act by disclosing a secret diplomatic cable (cipher) sent by the country’s embassy in Washington last year in March.

Qureshi, 67-year-old former foreign minister, was arrested under the Official Secrets Act for violating the secrecy of the official cable sent by the Pakistani embassy in the US to the foreign office when he was the foreign minister.

Khan and Qureshi have been placed in column 3 which describes the names and addresses of the accused sent for trial, the paper said.

The FIA invoked in the charge sheet sections 5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act which may lead to a death sentence, or two to 14 years’ imprisonment if proven.

While the investigation agency cited 27 witnesses in the charge sheet, the paper said that about a dozen of them would be produced in the witness box.

The FIA has also attached the transcript of Khan and Qureshi’s speeches made on March 27.

The cricketer-turned-politician is charged with the violation of the Official Secrets Act in connection with the leakage of a confidential diplomatic cable from Pakistan‘s embassy in Washington.

In March last year, ahead of the vote of no-confidence that resulted in his ouster, Khan pulled out a piece of paper – allegedly the cipher – from his pocket and waved it at a public rally in Islamabad, claiming it was the evidence of an “international conspiracy” being hatched to topple his government.

However, during the interrogation with the joint investigation team (JIT) in the jail on August 26, Khan denied that the paper he waved at a public gathering last year was the cipher. He also admitted to losing the cipher, saying he couldn’t recall where he kept it.

His principal secretary Azam Khan stated before a magistrate and the FIA that the Khan used it for his ‘political gains’ and to avert a vote of no-confidence against him.

The purported cipher (secret diplomatic cable) contained an account of a meeting between US State Department officials, including Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu, and Pakistani envoy Asad Majeed Khan last year.

Of late, Khan has come under increased scrutiny following the publication of a purported copy of the secret cable by the US media outlet The Intercept, with many in the previous government led by Shehbaz Sharif pointing fingers at the PTI chief for being the source of the leak.

Khan, who served as the country’s prime minister until April last year, currently faces around 180 cases. These cases primarily stem from incidents that occurred following the sacking of the Lahore corps commander’s house on May 9.

Royal Family Website Faces Cyber Attack By Russian Hackers: Report

The Royal family’s website was up and running again by midday

The Royal Family’s official website went down for about an hour and a half in the early hours of Sunday morning after being targeted by a cyber attack, The Telegraph reported. As per the report, no access to the website, its systems, or its content was gained. Upon visiting the URL, royal. uk, the page displayed an error message, ”Gateway time-out Error code 504.”

”We’ve just received breaking news that the Royal Family website has crashed after allegedly being targeted by Russian hackers who have reportedly taken responsibility for the attack on social media. “If you try to access the website, you get an error message,” Sky News host Caroline Di Russo said.

Russian hacker group Killnet has claimed responsibility for the cyber attack. In a message shared on Telegram, a messaging app, the hacker added a link to the website which provided information about the monarch, the Firm, and the Royal Family’s role in the UK and the Commonwealth.  They added the supposed takedown was an “attack on pedophiles”.

Though these attacks don’t cause major damage, they can lead to outages lasting several hours or even days. However, it has not been confirmed they were behind it.

The Royal family’s website was up and running again by midday.

As per Express.co.uk, KillMilk is the leader of the Russian hacktivist DDoS collective Killnet. KillNet is known for its Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) campaigns and has launched similar attacks against countries supporting Ukraine, especially NATO countries, since the start of the war in February last year.  A DDOS attack involves knocking a website offline by flooding it with traffic.

Killnet has in the past claimed attacks on US government websites and said it has taken action against other countries opposed to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In November last year, the European Parliament website was also hit by a cyber attack claimed by Killnet shortly after lawmakers approved a resolution calling Moscow a “state sponsor of terrorism”.

National Turmeric Board, Modi’s latest political stunt

And that is what exposes the political agenda behind Modi’s announcement at Mahabubnagar, all aimed at just getting some mileage in the forthcoming polls to the State Assembly.

National Turmeric Board, Modi’s latest political stunt

Hyderabad: When failure began staring him in the face, Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to go against what his own party’s union Minister declared in the Parliament. And thus came Sunday’s announcement on a National Turmeric Board.

Till a few months ago, the Centre had no plans to set up a turmeric board in the State and had made clear this as recent as the just concluded monsoon session, when union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel said there was no proposal to establish a turmeric board or any other spice-specific board in the country.

“The Spices Board, a statutory autonomous body, set up under the Spices Board Act, 1986 is entrusted with the responsibility of promoting 52 spices including turmeric, coriander, and chilies. Therefore, there is no proposal to establish a Turmeric Board or any other spice-specific Board in the country,” she had informed the Parliament.

And that is what exposes the political agenda behind Modi’s announcement at Mahabubnagar, all aimed at just getting some mileage in the forthcoming polls to the State Assembly. Most importantly, he has just repeated what his party candidate, Arvind Dharmapuri, had announced during his campaign for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

BRS MPs Venkatesh Netha Borlakunta, Kavitha Malothu, Dayakar Pasunoori and Gaddam Ranjith Reddy have been raising the issue of setting up the National Turmeric Board in the State in the Lok Sabha and everytime the reply from the government has been that there was no such proposal.

The union Minister’s statement had triggered strong resentment in Telangana with the BRS pointing out that Arvind Dharmapuri had made just another false poll promise. BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha, who contested against Arvind from Nizamabad, had also pointed out how the BJP MP was unable to convince the Centre to set up the Turmeric Board.

Turmeric farmers in Nizamabad had also put up a series of hoardings mocking Arvind Dharmapuri for failing to deliver on his promise.

In fact, since 2006, farmers have been demanding the constitution of the National Turmeric Board to address the issues related to farmers and ensure MSP. Turmeric farmers, who are facing severe stress following poor returns, have been asking for a board, on the lines of the tobacco board, to take care of their issues.

During the 2019 Parliament Polls, Arvind Dharmapuri, along with union Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP general secretary Ram Madhav, had promised to establish a Turmeric Board for Nizamabad’s turmeric farmers. Arvind had also made a written promise on a judicial bond paper saying he would establish a Turmeric Board within five days of winning the 2019 elections. His associates printed copies of the pledge and distributed them across the turmeric-growing regions of the Nizamabad Lok Sabha constituency. But nothing happened.

How Modi’s promise ends up remains to be seen, especially given his and his party’s track record.
