Geneva: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended a new vaccine, R21/Matrix-M, for the prevention of malaria in children, an official release said.

The recommendation follows advice from the WHO: Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunisation (SAGE) and the Malaria Policy Advisory Group (MPAG) and was endorsed by the WHO Director-General following its regular biannual meeting held on September 25-29.

WHO also issued recommendations on the advice of SAGE for new vaccines for dengue and meningitis, along with immunisation schedules and product recommendations for COVID-19. WHO also issued key immunisation programmatic recommendations on polio, IA2030 and recovering the immunisation programme, it added.

The R21 vaccine is the second malaria vaccine recommended by WHO, following the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine, which received a WHO recommendation in 2021. Both vaccines are shown to be safe and effective in preventing malaria in children and, when implemented broadly, are expected to have a high public health impact. Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease, places a particularly high burden on children in the African Region, where nearly half a million children die from the disease each year, the release said.

Demand for malaria vaccines is unprecedented; however, the available supply of RTS,S is limited. The addition of R21 to the list of WHO-recommended malaria vaccines is expected to result in sufficient vaccine supply to benefit all children living in areas where malaria is a public health risk. As a malaria researcher, I used to dream of the day we would have a safe and effective vaccine against malaria. Now we have two, said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General in a media briefing with Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunisation.

Demand for the RTS,S vaccine far exceeds supply, so this second vaccine is a vital additional tool to protect more children faster, and to bring us closer to our vision of a malaria-free future, he added.

Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, emphasised the importance of this recommendation for the continent, saying, This second vaccine holds real potential to close the huge demand-and-supply gap. Delivered to scale and rolled out widely, the two vaccines can help bolster malaria prevention and control efforts and save hundreds of thousands of young lives in Africa from this deadly disease.

The next steps for the second recommended malaria vaccine, R21/Matrix-M, include completing the ongoing WHO prequalification which would enable international procurement of the vaccine for a broader rollout.

At least 28 countries in Africa plan to introduce a WHO-recommended malaria vaccine as part of their national immunisation programmes. Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance has approved providing technical and financial support to roll out malaria vaccines to 18 countries. The RTS,S vaccine will be rolled out in some African countries in early 2024, and the R21 malaria vaccine is expected to become available to countries in mid-2024, a WHO release said.

1,100 Israeli settlers under regime protection intrude into al-Aqsa Mosque

An undated photo shows Israeli forces attacking a Palestinian woman near the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in al-Quds.

Hundreds of Israeli settlers under police protection have once again broken into the main prayer area of al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied East al-Quds.

The Jordan-run Islamic Waqf Department, which is in charge of al-Aqsa Mosque affairs, said roughly 1,100 settlers intruded into the holy complex on Monday.

Local media reports quoting sources and witnesses said the Israeli police along with extremist settlers entered the Qibli Mosque, the main congregational prayers, in an unusual move, desecrating the holy place.

Hundreds of Jewish fanatics walked around and held religious rituals in violation of the rules of the holy site.

At the same time, police attacked, beat up and forcibly removed at least two Palestinian women and a man who were worshipping at the mosque, the report said.

Calls for the regular presence of Jewish extremists in the al-Aqsa Mosque have increased in recent days concurrent with holidays marking a Jewish festival.

Israeli police allows the settler incursions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex despite repeated condemnations by the Palestinians and international community. The provocative incidents have been on the rise since the cabinet of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took office last December.

Non-Muslim worship at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound is prohibited according to an agreement between the occupying Israeli regime and the Jordanian government following the regime’s seizure of East al-Quds in 1967.

Separately, Israeli forces detained at least 15 Palestinians during a series of raids across various parts of the occupied territories.

I think it goes a long way: Aditi Ashok on winning silver in women’s individual golf event

That feels good to do it for golf, which I feel has never been one of the more popular sports in India. So, doing well in that sport at the Asian Games, I think goes a long way, Aditi Ashok said

Hangzhou:  Aditi Ashok, who won a historic silver medal at the women’s individual golf event at the Asian Games, has said that playing at the event has been a different experience.

“That feels good to do it for golf, which I feel has never been one of the more popular sports in India. So, doing well in that sport at the Asian Games, I think goes a long way,” Aditi told IOC.

“Personally, I feel like I should have won gold because I was leading by 7 shots going into the final day…overall, a silver medal I think is still pretty good. Those are all new experiences no matter how many games you have played. Also, I play 25 tournaments a year on the European Tour and the LPGA. None of those are like this, although I have done it before they are always overwhelming experiences,” she added.

Aditi is the first Indian woman golfer to win a medal at the Asian Games.

Aditi was leading the table for three rounds. However, she dropped her position in the final round. Thailand’s Arpichaya Yubol won the gold medal.

Raeisi: Iran censures 'hateful, spiteful' moves against Islam, Holy Qur'an

Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi

President Ebrahim Raeisi says Iran strongly condemns “hateful and spiteful” actions that take place in some parts of the world against Islam.

Raeisi made the remark in a Monday congratulatory message to the leaders and nations of Muslim countries on the auspicious occasion of the birth anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

He added that sacrilegious acts against Islam hurt the feelings of Muslim people across the globe.

He described Islam as the religion of freedom and equality and the Holy Qur’an as the book of mercy and wisdom.

“Insulting the Holy Qur’an, a precious miracle of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is an insult to humanity, freedom, values and spirituality,” the Iranian president said.

Several cities across the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark have witnessed the instances of the desecration of the Muslim holy book since the beginning of the year.

The blasphemous gestures, all of which have taken place with the go-ahead given by the countries’ respective governments and amid protection provided by their security forces, have opened the floodgates of protest across the Muslim world.

Raeisi also expressed hope that unity and integrity would be reinforced among all Muslim nations and Islam would be promoted across the world with the help of the Holy Qur’an and determination of the leaders of the Muslim countries and nations.

The Prophet of Islam was born on the 17th day of the lunar calendar month of Rabi-ul-Awwal in 570 CE. The date also marks the birth anniversary of Imam Ja’far Sadiq (AS), the sixth Shia Imam, which falls on Tuesday this year.

According to the Sunni narrative, the birth date of the Prophet (PBUH) falls on Rabi-ul-Awwal 12.

As per a call made by the late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini, the week in between the two dates has been designated as “the Islamic Unity Week” to promote convergence among Muslims.

Congress selling seats today, will sell Telangana tomorrow, says KTR

Congress selling seats today, will sell Telangana tomorrow, says KTR

BRS working president KT Rama Rao addressing a gathering at Suryapet after inaugurating the IT Tower.

Suryapet: BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Monday said the Congress in Telangana, was in the hands of a person who was earlier caught in the ‘cash for note’ case, with the same person now selling seats at prices ranging from Rs 25 crore to Rs 40 crore. He was selling seats today, and tomorrow would sell Telangana itself if he came to power.

Coming down heavily on the Congress for never keeping its promises, Rama Rao said Congress leader Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, who worked as the IT Minister in the Congress government did not do anything for Nalgonda. Let alone an IT company, he could not even get a computer for anyone here, he said while addressing a gathering at Suryapet after inaugurating the IT Tower there.

Strongly countering the criticism of opposition parties against the BRS, he said the Congress, whose warranty had expired 100 years ago, was making guarantees that would not be believed by the people of the State.

The Minister, who also laid the foundation stone for development works worth Rs.350 crore, Rama Rao said the Congress party was formed 150 years ago and its warranty had expired 100 years ago. Congress had no existence in the State and therefore there was no value for guarantees it gave, he said.

Responding to the challenge of Komatireddy Venkat Reddy that he would quit politics if the BRS could prove that 24 hours of free power was being supplied, Rama Rao said the government would provide a bus to Congress leaders to visit the place and time of their choise and test whether electricity was being supplied by touching the live wire. The Congress could supply electricity to agriculture sector even for six hours, he said, daring Venkat Reddy to contest from Suryapet constituency and retain his deposit.

Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy, Rajya Sabha member Badugula Lingaiah Yadav and MLAs from the district were present.

Former England cricket team skipper Michael Vaughan named his pick for the Cricket World Cup 2023 semifinalists and he believes that Australia will not be among the final four in the competition. The Australian cricket team is the most decorated side in the history of the Cricket World Cup with five titles but Vaughan said that he expects India, Pakistan, South Africa and England to fight it out in the business end of the tournament. India have won the tournament twice while Pakistan and defending champions England have won it once. South Africa have never won the title and have not even reached the final.

“Can’t wait for the World Cup to start this week .. My 4 semi-finalists will be … England, South Africa, India and Pakistan,” Vaughan said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.

Earlier, Vaughan also said that whichever team can beat India may end up winning the World Cup.

“It’s quite clear to me .. Whoever beats #India will win the WC .. #INDvAUS .. India’s batting line up on Indian pitches is ridiculous .. Plus they have all the bowling options covered .. it’s the only the pressure of the burden that could stop them,” Vaughan had posted on X.

England will begin their campaign in Cricket World Cup with the opening match against New Zealand on October 5. India play their first game against Australia in Chennai on October 8.

The epic tournament features 10 nations playing 48 matches over 46 days at 10 different venues.

Telangana: New projects set to transform Gajwel

Gajwel Ring Road is ready for inauguration.

Siddipet: Gajwel Constituency represented by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, will get a facelift as a host of the development works are ready for inauguration.

A 100-bed Mother and Child Care Hospital (MCCH) was built in the heart of the Gajwel town while an ultra-modern bus station was also constructed. The Road and Buildings department had completed the construction of a 21.92-km long road around Gajwel town. The State government had spent Rs 233 crore on the Gajwel Ring Road project. The ring road not only eased traffic congestion in and around Gajwel town, but also helped the town develop systematically.

Gajwel Inspector Amireddy Jan Reddy has said that the diversion of the traffic from Gajwel had restricted the road accident rate in the town. While the 6.4-km road was developed into a six-lane road, the remaining stretch was developed into a four-lane road. The road has 12 beautifully designed junctions and trees were planted along the road, on the road medians and also at junctions apart from laying landscape garden at junctions.

The MCCH Hospital was built by spending Rs 27.35 crore in G 2 mode. The facility will help the Gajwel and people from neighboring mandals get free treatment for children. The RTC bus station was constructed with Rs 6.37 crore. Since the town already has many facilities such as an Integrated Market, Integrated Office Complex, Urban Park, and many others, these two facilities will further ease the life for people besides making it the best livable town. Karachi: Inflation in Pakistan rose to 31.4 per cent year-on-year in September from 27.4 per cent in August, data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) showed Monday, as the nation faces high fuel and power rates, The News reported.

The South Asian nation faces an uphill task when it comes to economic recovery under a caretaker government following the approval of a $3 billion loan by the International Monetary Fund in July. The loan from the Washington-based lender helped the nation avert a sovereign default, but the conditions that came with it have made it difficult for the authorities to rein in inflation, The News reported.

PBS data showed that on a month-on-month basis, inflation climbed 2 per cent in September, compared to an increase of 1.7 per cent in August. The annual inflation already stands at a historic high of 38 per cent, recorded in May — courtesy of IMF’s reforms, including the removal of subsidies and easing of curbs on imports, The News reported.

The benchmark interest rates have also climbed to their highest at 22per cent, with the rupee hitting an all-time low against the dollar in August before recovering due to a crackdown on illegal greenback smugglers.

The Ministry of Finance, in its monthly report, said last week that it anticipates inflation to remain high in the coming month — hovering around 29-31 per cent — due to a surge in petrol and energy tariffs.
