Launched in 2017, the capital assist programme is a first-in-the-segment solution designed to bridge the financing gap and empower restaurant owners.

Over 8,000 restaurants have availed loans so far, of which 3,000 availed loans in 2022 alone, the company said in a statement.

Partnering with multiple lending partners, including Indifi, Incred, FT Cash, PayU Finance, and IIFL, Swiggy offers tailored financial solutions like term loans and credit lines.

Thousands protest during Tory Party Conference

It seems wherever the Conservatives go these days, protests follow them as has been the case with the party’s annual conference in Manchester, leading to campaigners and union members turning out in their thousands, airing a long list of grievances.

Britain is broken, everything from the environment, to education, to the health service, to public sector, and basically, as somebody who lives here, we deserve so much better.

Mancunian Protestor 01

Environment, finance for crises, human rights, we don’t even know where to start. Everything!

Mancunian Protestor 02

When Rishi Sunak took over as prime minister, he pledged to halve inflation, get the economy growing, reduce the national debt, cut hospital waiting lists, and, tackle irregular immigration. One year has passed and he’s yet to deliver on any of those promises.

You name it, education, school buildings crumbling, the NHS, they are the destructive party and I would have more respect for them if they changed their name.

Mancunian Protestor 03

The Conservatives have tried to sell the UK 2019 withdrawal from the European Union as a success story. But the impact Brexit continues to have on the country is not lost on its opponents who also think today’s crises have a long history.

This is a cycle which began with the neoliberal economics of Margaret Thatcher and has now lasted for decades.

And now we can see what the result of that is. The Tory Party, of course, were never going to make Brexit work for ordinary people.

They were going to treat it just like they treat every other crisis, as an opportunity for them and for the rich and for the corporations.

John Rees, Writer & Activist

The current demonstration comes off the back of multiple public sectors strikes over pay disputes in the past year, with some still ongoing.

After so many years in power the conservatives have gotten used to their annual conferences being a rather quiet and comfortable affair. But this is turning out to be very different. The call for change is in the air.

Three scientists win Nobel Prize in physics for work on electrons in atoms during split seconds

Stockholm: The Nobel Prize in physics was awarded Tuesday to three scientists who look at electrons in atoms during the tiniest of split seconds.

Pierre Agostini of The Ohio State University in the US; Ferenc Krausz of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany; and Anne L’Huillier of Lund University in Sweden won the award.

Their experiments “have given humanity new tools for exploring the world of electrons inside atoms and molecules,” according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which announced the prize in Stockholm.

They “have demonstrated a way to create extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure the rapid processes in which electrons move or change energy.” At the moment, this science is about understanding our universe rather than practical applications, but the hope is that it will eventually lead to better electronics and disease diagnosis.

L’Huillier is only the fifth woman to win a Nobel in physics.

“This is the most prestigious and I am so happy to get this prize. It’s incredible,” she told the news conference announcing the prize. “As you know there are not so many women who got this prize so it’s very special.” The Nobel Prizes carry a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor (USD 1 million). The money comes from a bequest left by the prize’s creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1896.

Last year, three scientists jointly won the physics prize for proving that tiny particles could retain a connection with each other even when separated.

The phenomenon was once doubted but is now being explored for potential real-world applications such as encrypting information.

The physics prize comes a day after Hungarian-American Katalin Karikó and American Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize in medicine for discoveries that enabled the creation of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.

Nobel announcements will continue with the chemistry prize on Wednesday and the literature prize on Thursday.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the economics award on October 9.

The laureates are invited to receive their awards at ceremonies on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death.
The prestigious peace prize is handed out in Oslo, according to his wishes, while the other award ceremony is held in Stockholm.

MS Dhoni sports new hairstyle, Bollywood celebs, fans react

Mumbai: Known to draw eyeballs with literally everything he does, former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is yet again courting headlines with his new hairstyle and his fans simply can’t stop gushing over it.

On Tuesday morning, celebrity hairstylist Aalim Hakim took to his Instagram account to share a series of pictures of MS Dhoni and tagged it with a message that read, “amazing opportunity to get associated with Mahendra Singh Dhoni”.

He captioned the post as “Yessss!!! It’s our Mahendra Singh Dhoni. It’s an amazing opportunity for any creative person to get associated with Mahendra Singh Dhoni and I’m always grateful that I get this honour to show my craft by styling his hair. We have done some really cool different hairstyles in the past but before the last IPL when everyone was cutting their hair sharp and short… That time Mahi bhai showed me one image of his which was a fanmade image of him with long hair and I just got fascinated with that image and requested him to grow his hair long. We both promised eachother that will not touch his hair and keep growing it and then we will cut & style it.”

In the pictures, MSD could be seen in his new long-haired look, complimenting it with black t-shirt and a pair of matching black shades.

“I have been a huge fan of Mahi bhai’s long hair. We decided to create an all-new texture and colour for the hair. I really enjoyed creating this effortless hairstyle for Mahi bhai. So here I am sharing some images that I clicked before he went to give a shot for an ad film. Always a pleasure to work with him,” he added.

Soon after the celebrity hairstylist shared the pictures, fans swamped the comment section with red heart and fire emoticons.

Actor Aparshakti Khurana wrote, “Wowwww Aaaaalim Bhai! Looks Fab!” Anil Kapoor commented, “He’s looking great aalim .. great haircut and the aalim touch.” Ranveer Singh dropped a red heart emoticon. A user wrote, “That vintage look.”

A talismanic wicket-keeper batsman, who went by the nickname ‘Captain Cool’ while turning out in national colours, Dhoni led India in 332 matches, the most by a captain in international cricket. Of these, he won 178, lost 120, and tied six while 15 ended in no result. His win percentage as a captain is 53.61. These numbers, combined with the trophies he has won, makes him India’s most successful captain ever.

In these 332 matches, he scored 11,207 runs in 330 innings at an average of 46.89 and a strike rate of over 76. He scored 11 centuries and 71 fifties as a captain, with the best score of 224. Suffice it to say, the burden of captaincy did not affect MS at all. His success at the international level spilled over to franchise cricket as well. He represented and led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rising Pune Supergiant (RPG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Dhoni won five IPL titles with CSK in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. He also won two Champions League T20 titles with CSK in 2010 and 2014. Despite the immense responsibility as a captain, Dhoni’s batting was not affected a bit while playing for his franchises as well. In 250 IPL matches, he has scored 5,082 runs at an average of 38.79 and a strike rate of 135.92. He has scored 24 half-centuries, with the best score of 84*. He is the seventh-highest run-scorer in IPL history.

India now 2nd-largest mobile phone manufacturing hub globally

Smartphones

New Delhi: India’s push for self-sufficiency in assembling mobile phones is yielding results as the country is now the second-biggest manufacturing hub for mobile phones, suggested a report on Tuesday.

This achievement has been made possible with heavy investment from original equipment manufacturers, original design manufacturers and companies dealing in components and parts, a news report showed on Tuesday.

India is expected to export about 22 per cent of its total assembled mobile phones in 2023, according to Counterpoint Research.

In a fillip to the “Make in India” initiative, India saw mobile phones exports worth over Rs 45,000 crore in the April-August period in the ongoing fiscal year (FY24), government and industry data showed recently.

As per the estimates by the Department of Commerce and the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), the April-August period saw mobile phone exports worth $5.5 billion, against $3 billion (about Rs 25,000 crore) in the same period in FY22-23. India is set to cross Rs 1,20,000 crore in mobile phone exports in the current fiscal year, with Apple leading the market with more than 50 per cent in FY24.

Meanwhile, according to the report, smartphone shipments from original design manufacturers (ODMs) and Independent Design Houses (ODMs/IDHs) declined six per cent (year-on-year) in the first half this year, according to the report. The companies, known as the “Big 3″accounted for 76 per cent of the global ODM/IDH smartphone market in the first half. Outsourced design shipments decreased in H1 2023 but their share increased when compared to the same period last year, the report mentioned. The top six ODMs took 95 per cent share of the total ODM shipments

Turkey holds large-scale anti-terror operation across country

“As of 8:30 a.m., 466 anti-terrorist operations have been carried out across Turkey, in which 13,440 security officers participated. As part of Operation Heroes, 12 members of terrorist organizations were arrested in Mersin, Van, Sanliurfa, Mardin and Aydin. At least 55 suspected terrorists were arrested in operations in Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Istanbul, Bursa, Batman, Denizli, Adana, Kayseri, Antalya, Konya, Isparta and Kocaeli,” the minister said, TASS reported.

Meanwhile, more than 110 people suspected of involvement in the PKK have been detained over the past day, according to local media.

The operations are being carried out after the terrorist attack near the Turkish Interior Ministry building in Ankara, which was claimed by the PKK.

On October 1, two terrorists drove up to the gates of the building and one of them detonated explosives at the guard post. There was an exchange of fire that resulted in the neutralization of the second terrorist. Two police officers were lightly wounded. The Interior Ministry established that one of the attackers was a member of the PKK.

Jordan slams Israeli settlers’ repeated violations against Aqsa Mosque

The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has condemned the ongoing violations by Jewish extremists against the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied Old City of al-Quds, and the Israeli regime’s restrictive measures on Palestinians in the holy site.

Sufyan Qudah, the spokesman for the ministry, urged Israel to live up to its obligations under international law as the occupying power in East al-Quds, stressing that all practices and violations against al-Quds Mosque must end and its sanctity respected.

“Israel has no sovereignty over occupied East al-Quds and has no right to impose restrictions on the entry to the holy compound,” Qudah said,

The Jordan-run Islamic Waqf Department, which is in charge of al-Aqsa Mosque affairs, has the exclusive jurisdiction over the site, he added.

Qudah reiterated that the mosque compound is purely a place of worship for Muslims.

The escalating provocations inside and around the mosque constitute “a flagrant and unacceptable” violation of international law and the existing historical and legal status quo in al-Quds and its holy sites, he pointed out.

On Tuesday, hundreds of Jewish settlers stormed the al-Aqsa Mosque compound under the protection of Israeli security forces.

Eyewitnesses reported that the settlers broke into the courtyards of the sacred site through the Moroccans’ Gate, also known as the Mughrabi Gate, and performed Talmudic rituals on the fourth day of the Jewish Sukkot holiday.

Hard-line Israeli officials and settlers regularly storm the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied city, a provocative move that infuriates Palestinians.

Such mass break-ins almost always take place at the behest of Tel Aviv-backed temple groups and under the auspices of the Israeli police in al-Quds.

The Jewish visitation of al-Aqsa is permitted but as part of a decades-old agreement between Jordan – the custodian of Islamic and Christian sites in al-Quds – and Israel in the wake of Israel’s occupation of East al-Quds in 1967, non-Muslim worship at the compound is prohibited.

In October 2021, an Israeli court upheld a ban on Jewish prayers at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, after an earlier lower court’s decision stirred outrage among various Palestinians and across the Muslim world.

The district court judge in al-Quds Aryeh Romanov on October 8 confirmed that Jews are barred from worshiping openly at the site, and only Muslims are permitted to pray there.

In May 2021, frequent acts of violence against Palestinian worshipers at al-Aqsa Mosque led to an 11-day war between Palestinian resistance groups in the besieged Gaza Strip and the Israeli regime, during which the regime forces killed at least 260 Palestinians, including 66 children.

Stock market closes in red after trading in negative on weak global cues-Telangana Today

Stock market closes in red after trading in negative on weak global cues

Mumbai: After being in the negative territory on weak global cues, the stock market closed in the red.

International markets faced significant turmoil, sending shockwaves through global financial centres, which reverberated in Indian equities.

At the closing bell, the Sensex reported a decline of 323.09 points, settling at 65,505.32, while the Nifty also ended in the red, closing 109.55 points lower, at 19,528.75.

Among the Nifty companies, there were 12 advances and 37 declines, underscoring the broad-based pressure on the market.

Top gainers among the Nifty firms included Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro (LT), Titan, Bajaj Finserv, and Adani Ports, signalling some resilience in select sectors.

While the bears were firmly in control, the top losers at the time of closing included ONGC, Eicher Motors, Maruti, Hindalco, and Dr Reddy.

The World Bank, meanwhile, retained India’s GDP growth forecast for the financial year 2023-24 at 6.3 per cent, noting that the country continued to show resilience against the backdrop of a challenging global environment.

Dhruv Sharma, senior economist, World Bank, said on the growth projection, “Our team expects India’s growth in this fiscal year fiscal year 2324 to be 6.3 per cent. This number is unchanged from our previous projection which was delivered six months ago. We are expecting growth to be underpinned by robust private investment, and we expect to see some strength in the services sector as well. The moderation and our number from last year’s growth number which was 7.2 per cent is largely as a result of a moderating consumption and challenging external conditions.”

The persistent negative sentiment in global markets weighed heavily on India’s stock indices, particularly impacting sectors such as Oil and Gas, Automobile, and Pharmaceuticals.

Varun Aggarwal, founder and managing director, Profit Idea, said, “Nifty closed in minus today on expected global sentiments. Oil & Gas, Automobile & Pharma shares dragged the index on the lower side”.

“Nifty made two attempts to go below 19500 levels but managed to close above that. Heavy put writing at 19200-19300. It will be important to see how market behaves in this weak global sentiments,” Aggarwal added.

Throughout the trading session, the Nifty made two attempts to breach the crucial 19,500 levels but managed to hold above that threshold at the closing bell.

The presence of substantial put writing at the 19,200-19,300 levels reflected cautious trading sentiment, suggesting a degree of support at these levels.

Aggarwal said, “Traders should trade cautiously. Avoid overnight positions and prefer to make risk defined strategies. Investors should look to accumulate good stocks on dips in staggered manner. IT, Metal, Financial Services, and Banks looks strong for medium term. Bias remains positive for Indian Markets. Bull momentum will stay intact till market is above 18887.”

Analysts emphasised the need to closely monitor market behaviour amid the ongoing weak global sentiments, stressing traders should exercise caution and avoid overnight positions.

Risk-defined strategies were recommended for those participating in the market.

For investors, the day’s decline presented an opportunity to accumulate fundamentally strong stocks on market dips, preferably in a staggered manner.

Key sectors to watch in the medium term included Information Technology, Metals, Financial Services, and Banks, which exhibited relative strength amid market turbulence.

Despite the day’s challenges, the overall bias for Indian markets remained positive. Analysts noted that the bullish momentum would remain intact as long as the market held above the key support level of 18,887.

However, the market’s resilience will be put to the test in the coming days as it navigates the uncertain global landscape.
